Yes I attended one in Brooklyn NY where the funeral ptocession stopped by both of the houses where the deceased had lived during his life. The hearse paused briefly at each of the two houses. I am sure the funeral home had to charge for the extra time and extra driving, especially because this was quite a distance.

Someone asked how to be involved with the funeral....
I was able to paint my mom’s nails and do her hair. I also helped with the makeup application too. It was actually very nice because she died suddenly and it was unexpected. I’m also a ER nurse so I was mentally prepared before arriving.

As a clergyman I have had to intervene in family disputes at a service, but thankfully rare. Sometimes disputes among families during planning of service & usually I’m able to work with funeral director in helping family resolve so we work together to help family work through disputes. Thankfully not a frequent problem.

I missed you live. I have a very good question. Have you ever buried someone that enjoyed how something develops over several years? I just got back from a funeral and my cousins buried their dad with a few different phones. One was an old rotary dial phone, one was the 1st cell phone that was a bag phone as it was called. Then a flip phone and then a smartphone. I could not help myself but let out a chuckle but he wanted to take those with him.

my uncle belonged to a church right across from his home for years. He was buried right past the church. We actually stopped the funeral precession at the church. parked the hearse under awning . Rung the Sunday bell and said a small prayer from the cars. I live in the middle of Kentucky. Most people here are buried on family land or close to their home.

On the gravedigging topic and the space issue: I remember visiting my mom's grave (d.2002) and while walking through the graves with my 3 year old in a stroller we noticed all these gophers up on the top of the grass, blinking dazedly in the sun and wondered what the hell was going on. Turned out they were going to apparently inter a whole row of people who had been waiting, so to speak, to all be done at the same time (I don't know why, maybe it's cheaper). The gophers were apparently disoriented by all the ground moving equipment. Anyway there was basically a large ditch and I could see the vaults of the people of the row behind. I could see the foot of about 10-15 older graves and the feet of the various caskets. It was very creepy. My mom was buried in a very old grave my grandmother bought when her first husband died in the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic. Very interesting story. My mom insisted we do a graveside service and no way did she want to hang around and be buried at the cemetery's convenience. I tried to talk her out of embalming but she really didn't care about that.

Kari, I go on youtube at times and watch videos where the graves of famous people are been buried. I am not an American, but I am from an Asian country where I was born and still live. I love Country music and feel sad when I think of all the American Country singers who have passed away. I love Glen Campbell's songs and a while ago watched a video where they showed his grave site and tomb stone. I have never been to the US. I once met an American couple who were visiting my country and while speaking to them they told me that although the graves and tomb stones are visible to the public, almost all these famous people are not actually buried in those places, but in secret locations where only the close family members know. They keep it as a secret to prevent the bodies been dug up by grave diggers so that they can get parts of the clothing, casket or even body parts and sell them as souvenirs. Could that be true?

As I was cleaning up, I found what looks like a few graves, no headstones but had a beautiful wrought iron fence buried in the leaves near them. One director said, if it is required to embalm a body for transfer across a state line, the blood drained from Jewish bodies is retained and has to be buried in the casket. How is a body stored for cremation if it takes weeks to get death certificate? I’m asking because my father passed away on January 6th but South Carolina is backed up and not issuing death certificates for at least 3 weeks some have been waiting longer.

@@KaritheMortician Thanks so much, Kari. I am 77 and always feared death but your videos have made me a little less Fearful. I will not be waked just a 5 minute for 2 close extended families to see me. I have no family anymore. In PR i know a funeral home is not wanting to embalm any covid death , they pick them up, put in casket wrapped up as they come from hospital and put in casket and it must remain shut. Most of time they are naked. People do not know they can go with other choices. Terrible i find it disrespectful and it's a real known funeral home.
