I love old cemeteries. There is alot of history there and a most peaceful place to be . I have to say that your videos Kari are great and it gives us curious people a little less fear of death. I'm glad you are here and I must say that you are so pretty and professional!!! ❤️
I worked at several FH in Chicago and it was a custom of the FH hearse to pass by a deceased's home on the way to the cemetery; it was called the LAST GOOD-BY. I worked for large Funeral Homes (Blake-Lamb)
Yes I attended one in Brooklyn NY where the funeral ptocession stopped by both of the houses where the deceased had lived during his life. The hearse paused briefly at each of the two houses. I am sure the funeral home had to charge for the extra time and extra driving, especially because this was quite a distance.
Someone asked how to be involved with the funeral.... I was able to paint my mom’s nails and do her hair. I also helped with the makeup application too. It was actually very nice because she died suddenly and it was unexpected. I’m also a ER nurse so I was mentally prepared before arriving.
My sister painted my deceased sisters nails and put her lipstick on her. I couldn't believe my sister hauled out her own lipstick and put it on my other sister. I thought it was kind of creepy but if you know my sister.... 😁
As a clergyman I have had to intervene in family disputes at a service, but thankfully rare. Sometimes disputes among families during planning of service & usually I’m able to work with funeral director in helping family resolve so we work together to help family work through disputes. Thankfully not a frequent problem.
I missed you live. I have a very good question. Have you ever buried someone that enjoyed how something develops over several years? I just got back from a funeral and my cousins buried their dad with a few different phones. One was an old rotary dial phone, one was the 1st cell phone that was a bag phone as it was called. Then a flip phone and then a smartphone. I could not help myself but let out a chuckle but he wanted to take those with him.
my uncle belonged to a church right across from his home for years. He was buried right past the church. We actually stopped the funeral precession at the church. parked the hearse under awning . Rung the Sunday bell and said a small prayer from the cars. I live in the middle of Kentucky. Most people here are buried on family land or close to their home.
When I was in Houston they did not allow funeral processions. After service, unless the cemetery was right there, the hearse and family cars went together and everyone else was told a time to gather for burial

He said, a family came in and wanted the member of their family viewed and buried in a see thru negligee. So, of course, I asked questions. He said, being that there would be small children there, he couldn't do, it was an interesting day.

On the gravedigging topic and the space issue: I remember visiting my mom's grave (d.2002) and while walking through the graves with my 3 year old in a stroller we noticed all these gophers up on the top of the grass, blinking dazedly in the sun and wondered what the hell was going on. Turned out they were going to apparently inter a whole row of people who had been waiting, so to speak, to all be done at the same time (I don't know why, maybe it's cheaper). The gophers were apparently disoriented by all the ground moving equipment. Anyway there was basically a large ditch and I could see the vaults of the people of the row behind. I could see the foot of about 10-15 older graves and the feet of the various caskets. It was very creepy. My mom was buried in a very old grave my grandmother bought when her first husband died in the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic. Very interesting story. My mom insisted we do a graveside service and no way did she want to hang around and be buried at the cemetery's convenience. I tried to talk her out of embalming but she really didn't care about that.

I love Country music and feel sad when I think of all the American Country singers who have passed away. If being buried in a mausoleum is embalming required?
At many yes
@@KaritheMortician Thanks so much, Kari. I am 77 and always feared death but your videos have made me a little less Fearful. I will not be waked just a 5 minute for 2 close extended families to see me. I have no family anymore. I am not crazy about being embalmed so I need to call The All Saints Mausoleum in Des Plaines, Ill to see if I need to be Embalmed. Great videos.
In PR i know a funeral home is not wanting to embalm any covid death , they pick them up, put in casket wrapped up as they come from hospital and put in casket and it must remain shut. Most of time they are naked. People do not know they can go with other choices. Terrible i find it disrespectful and it's a real known funeral home.
Thank you for sharing!

When a person is dying and gets that "death rattle"..isn't that actually mucus in their throat that they can clear like we normally do ?.I use to be a NA and took care of my mother in law..it got really loud, even fr3aking the Hospice nurse out.
Yes it is a build up of fluids and sounds horrible to everyone listening
