If people want to make payments, consider making arrangements ahead of time. My parents did this so when Dad died there was no anxiety about where the money would come from.

Many folks feel that it's unprofessional for a FH to ask for payment up front for funeral services-this is what I've learned as a FD trainee 40 yrs. ago and it made sense: Once the body is buried, nothing can be repossessed & the casket cannot be restocked. It didn't happen often, but families who didn't pay would be produced an invoice for the balance due prior to the funeral service. If they could not pay, a public announcement would be made that there would not be a service & the body would be loaded & returned to the FH. Usually someone at the gathering would front the balance to lighten the embarrassment. It was always made very clear to families upon making arrangements of this policy. I've learned to tell them before going into the casket selection room that it was not a car dealership & that the $3.000 model they select (with loved one in it) would not be seen after the service & won't be driven home. At first it was an awkward statement to make, but learned that a FH is a business for profit like any other. That policy hasn't changed.

When you hear the phrase " dead weight " it's the truth. Until you do that , you don't realize how heavy they are. To turn a person or lift their limbs was diffucult.

As far as straightening limbs and things, I remember attending a funeral 20 years ago or so for a young woman at church who'd died because of a car crash. She had been in a coma for months and probably had a lot of brain damage. As we all filed by the casket I noticed her hands were balled up into fists but I can imagine it's probably difficult if not impossible to straighten out something like that. I still remember it because it was the first time I had seen a dead body since a great aunt when I was a child, so it stuck with me.

Some you would think would have elaborate mausoleum's but instead just a simple grave marker. Quite a number of them are cremated which really surprised me. Some people still flock to see, Marilyn Monroe with the lipstick stained marble crypt marker to Rudolph Valentino's.

I’ve been to viewings both the day of, and also the day before. I feel like it’s too much to be at both of them (for the first grandfather that passed, we had 2 of them that were public the day before, plus a couple of private ones the day after he passed and the day of the service.) For my cousin, they had 2 the day before the service, of which I didn’t go to the second one (I wasn’t sure I could handle it, as it was a tragic accident), but for both of them, they passed away on a Thursday, but the services weren’t until Monday. For the other grandfather, my grandmother, and my aunt and uncle, they had the visitation an hour before the funeral service, and I feel it’s probably easier that way.

Where I live we get a lot of cruise ships visit, we'll before covid, we have a very old cathedral and tourist often try to get in if there is a wedding or funeral. Open coffins are not done here, Scotland UK, but tourists have been caught trying to open a coffin lid or a funeral service they have just walked in on, trying to take selfies with the coffin or as the pallbearers are escorting the coffin in or out of the cathedral. The poor family that own the only funeral home had a difficult task keeping the decorum and dignity of the funeral, support the family of deceased and stop the tourists causing disrespectful disruptions, it even was in the local paper. I think social media is part of this problem and tourists from outside the UK being more likely to be used to open coffin/casket viewing etc.

Hi Kari, Thanks for your great work. You're providing me with good skills since I'm applying to the mortuary science program. But this comment/question is not related to this video. I put it here b/c it's the most recent. It has to do with the skills involved in dealing with grieving people as a funeral director. I've seen clergy who are amazingly skilled and others not so. I know from my own culture/experience that there are no-nos-- things you shouldn't say. Like, "How are you doing?" because they will set off the grief unnecessarily. Also there's big cultural differences in grief.
So what are some lessons/strategies and things to avoid that you've learned?

We are a group of islands some inhabited some not, no crematorium and only 1 funeral home for a totally population of around 22,000 people. If a family choose cremation for the deceased it means the funeral home transporting the deceased via 1hr ferry and approx 3 hr drive then returning with the cremated remains. I appreciate you are so respectful and won't show the deceased in videos, would you consider a mannequin, friend, model or like an old cpr dummy to do demo's of moving deceased, mortuary makeup, dressing a deceased etc

Back on the embalming topic. The history of that I believe began around the 1860's in the U.S. (Civil War) and the death of Abraham Lincoln influenced it a lot. The public caught onto to having embalming done to "preserve" loved ones. Refrigeration was not available then.

It may be required by the funeral home or length of time may be required by law

Kari just thought maybe have your ring lights higher and angled down a bit too lessen glare of lights reflecting from screen on your glasses, though I don't find it too distracting.

I'm on my way out to a V.A. cemetery. Should I tell my family to get a wood or metal coffin? I've had 3 neighbors die within the last 2 months. Another neighbor died last year. None died from Covid. God speed. Eaglegards...

@@KaritheMortician Thxz. I'd prefer lead. I hate bugs. Can me up. God speed. P.S. My wife's younger former co-workers are dying off late 40s to early 50s. Not from Covid. . Most were school teachers. It's difficult for her. I was a certified teacher and worked at a high school. My principal, vice principal, a department teacher of mine, and a couple of others died within a short time of each other.

Yes it does. I attended a cancer patient & she bled from her eyes, ears, nose, mouth & her private parts.
