In order to spin like James Hype, it's important to have certain settings correct on your DJ gear. In this lesson, James talks you around the settings he goes to immediately on arriving at a venue to DJ, before he starts his set, and explains what he changes to get the gear set up the way he likes it.

i hope everyone is listening to what he said about gain levels! werry important!
Definitely!
I had a general idea about it but this is very well explained. I'll be keeping this in mind going forward.
Probably the best tip in this entire video.
So good to see this! God help the DJ who plays after James Hype who hasn't got a clue what he's changed! 😂
lol!
Man, a person playing after J.H. should know all that basic stuff.
CDJs change to default settings that you have set in your rekordbox as soon as you insert your pen drive.
Your usb has all of your settings so it wouldn't matter
theres nothing to worry, default is all in 12 o clock in eq and others just preferences what are playable any way
The man, the myth, the legend

you really need to let the guy tal.
Hype is the man!!!!
Virtual DJ got that split mode pfl and master on different ears
I love this, one if not the best mixing DJs on the planet showing us how to set up? amazing!!! thank you dj tips
Glad you like it!
Covered so many great things in just a few minutes. Thank you!
Glad it helped :)
Filling a gap with this vid. Thank you guys!
Our pleasure!
Just learned about master tempo, GAME CHANGER!
Awesome!
yes producer on the mix are always more accurate how to set the trim and the whole Master volume! thanks for all these tips
You’re welcome!
Roll on Drum Sheds in April ❤
Thank You so much i learned to get those gain knobs at around 11 o’clock instead of 12 o’clock - great idea 💡
Glad it helped Allan.
other mixers (allen & heath eg) often have plenty of headroom built in to avoid clipping. Pioneer is digital generally so clipping occurs sooner/ easier in my experience. Depends on your mixing style too. i generally gain my tracks before I begin playing them as I often have very old tracks that arent as loud as modern mixes.
I run all my tunes thru platinum notes so the tracks or all set at the same gain!!..😎👍😁🎶🎶🎶👌
Simplicity at its best. Smart guy
For sure
As an amateur bedroom DJ using a second hand Pioneer DDJ SX, the 'Master Cue' is like the pre fade listen, I don't have monitor speakers, my family don't have to listen to my crash mixing ! :-)
That's cool - thanks for sharing.
Sick for a free lesson 🔥
Glad you liked it :)
Phil: All gear has crossfader curve
DJM-V10-LF: am I a joke to you?
Lol
Hello, I've seen quite a handful of your likes and comments on my post and I just wanna go out of my way to appreciate you for your comments and good wishes encourages me. ❤
very informative
Thanks!
Great Video!!
Thanks a lot David!
an important thing to make sure you check when stepping up to this mixer is what the line outputs are set to (A, B, or thru). Any one who hasnt used a this setup could be confused when their FX don't come out
Good point, thanks for sharing Marcelius.
best ever james hype
🙌Thanks for watching
Why does hype look like he was forced to be there 😅
I wouldn't say he does but fair enough :)
@@digitaldjtips it looks like he is not there with his mind ...he looks so strainge in the camera..normaly he is full of energy behind his decks now he is quit but i like him for saying this other dj's make there a mysterie of he is a good fine guy...and king of the tech house music...thanks james all respect to you mate go on like you are doing make the crowd insane and you are a born entertainer..greatz
Yeah !!that’s my first impression as well! first thing came to my mind. It’s fair enough though if you bare in mind that he has uploaded a full set up and mixing course on his website requiring subscription… so making this video for free.. we can’t tell it’s worth it for him 😢
Talvez, se o cara deixasse ele falar... estilo Jô Soares para quem é do Brazil entende
You don’t know how the dynamic is behind the screens…
The immediate vibe I’m getting here is that Phil likes to borderline talk over James. At certain points he talks in James’ name, standing next to the guy… I wouldn’t appreciate that tbh :)
I need to see his camera specs for the live streams!!
multiple Sony Alpha 6500s with various lenses
@@fl04 for the main front facing one, you think its a fish eye lens?
@@jdoggz151 Yes, it should be somewhere between 12-15mm (on crop beware), depending on interpretation that's considered fisheye. It's hard to recognize but it could be one from Laowa
@@fl04 thank you, appreciate the info here. I was wondering how to get a DJ stream to look like his for at least just the front facing shot.
Please More !
We'll have another Hype lesson up soon :)
Anymore free lessons coming? Great watch mate, cheers!
Probably not from this course but likely from others :)
Be good to see James hype do a mix with the v10 6 channel mixer and 6 decks
Agreed!
None better than James Hype
He's a beast for sure!
I’m so glad they touched on the Master levels, some DJs on specifically CDJ setups wack the gain all the way up and have everything in the red...
Glad we could help :)
Next level style
🙌
Hi please can you tell me the make model of the device James is using to get his in ear headphones wireless from the controller? Thank you. 🙏
Hello can you make a quick video about how to use pads patterns on a controller, I mean beatjump. And others stuff , with traktor gear ! Thanks in advance a lot of dj don’t know how to use it ✌️
Thanks for the suggestion :)
@@digitaldjtips thanks Phil it’s much appreciate ✌️✌️
James looks nervous AF hahaha... Great video all in all.💋
Glad you enjoyed it
Can you use serato and control lapto via that mixer. ????
I needed thisss
Glad it helped!
Like James
🙂
cool stuff thanks guys
No problem!
James hype best DJ around
He's awesome 😎
Yeah
Thanks for watching :)
What model of headphones/in-ear monitors does James use?
Shure 535
can i see 4 track on laptop with Numark Mixstream Pro in Virtual DJ
In dealing with the gain. What if the recording level is low on the next song you want to mix in? Cause i keep having to adjust the gain when it comes to tracks that have a low recording level?
That's fairly normal, you could try something like Platinum Notes if you like to try and make your tracks more consistent so you don't have to tweak the gain as much between tracks
@@digitaldjtips Platinum notes. Ok I'll give it a try.
@@digitaldjtips I use platinum notes. Much easier than manually going through each song and "normalizing" them.
Platinum notes is the Don!!..😎👍🙏🙌🤗💙🎶🎶🎶🎶😁
Is this part of the James hype course that is sold?
This is a FREE sample lesson from "James Hype's Mixing Skills" course - find out more here: djtips.co/hype-sample
i see James Hype, i like
Nice 😄
I want to know what type of in-ear monitors james hype uses?
Shure SE535
Effects processing? Pre or Post fader?
There are a lot of settings and it's nice to have your preferred settings stored on a thumb drive then make sure you load them when you're playing on someone else's gear.
They didn't mention quantize. He has the CDJ quantize off. If you have quantize on that can make hot cues really frustrating. Quantize on the mixer makes your FX line up to the grid, but quantize on the CDJ makes your hot cues not respond until the next full beat.
Yes very true :) We mention Quantize quite a bit during the course because it's not set and forget, James is constantly turning it on/off depending on the technique so he definitely doesn't just have it off
Hello, I've seen quite a handful of your likes and comments on my post and I just wanna go out of my way to appreciate you for your comments and good wishes encourages me. ❤
Ok all good. Nut can he read his Dancefloor? The only skill you really need.
Don’t think he’s got an awful lot to prove in that respect. 😀
Learned a lot trying to step up my game on my low level controller thoe haha
You definitely do learn a lot working with limitations 😊
@@digitaldjtips straight from the basics 😊cant wait to upgrade to a pro controller to elevate my mixes but till then imma smash beats on my hercules inpluse 300
Sounds like a plan!
#HYPEFAM 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
🙌
U can tell james is like…. “Uhhhh…. i just do this im not the best teacher lol”
James is actually a great teacher (he really came into his own when we made the production course with him), even so our job is to try to get the best out of him in these lessons - hope we did an OK job!
What is he using for IEM wireless? I can’t figure it out!
We've never seen him using wireless, unless he's just started
Thanks for the reply...I think he has been doing it as of late@@digitaldjtips
How much INR for this full course?
Here's all the course info: 1.digitaldjtips.com/hype-course-info
Already saw it on course 🤣🤣
Haha awesome :)
What in ear monitors does he use?
Shure 535
@@digitaldjtips Thanks for quick reply! Isnt the bass in those pretty low? I've been told that Shure might not be the best for club music due to low bass frequency in them and it makes it harder to mix "tight".
What controller is that?
Not a controller its a full cdj setup. Each CDJ is about 1,000 off the lot plus 1,500 for the mixer.
I’m new by only 4weeks to this digital DJ set up. And have my gain set the same as James. Because it was all I could use to stop some tracks playing in the red.is there a setting in the software to help with that????
What software? There might be an autogain but from a workflow point of view there's nothing wrong with simply using the gain knobs
@@digitaldjtips ok that’s cool. I just thought with all the different setting in the recordbox software there maybe an auto setting to stop clipping. But thanks I’m good with the manual trim👍🏻
what dj controllers does james hype use..? i really want to achieve that level of using 4'decks still a beginner would love to no how it works do i need a specific dj controller that can connect external decks .. if so what controller what that be..??
James uses a CDJ setup rather than controllers but it's entirely possible to pull off his tricks with a wide range of gear including controllers, in the course we have him pull off a couple of his signature routines on the DDJ-1000 and 400 to show it's basically all the same :) The DDJ-1000 would be worth a look if it's within budget, 4 decks by itself or you can hook up a couple of CDJs or turntables to it
DDJ1000 and CDJS on the side. Walaaa
These guys are two different species
Some good tips, thanks! 👍🏻
Can I ask, do you know if James just beatmatches acapellas by ear? Or can they be synced somehow?
Thanks.
He does both - it is all explained in the full course, in a lot of detail Techy1210!
@@digitaldjtips Thanks for the reply 👍
You can find the original songs and find the pitch that way but a lot of times you can mix by ear. Doesn't always have to match pitches. It can work with 5ths and other harmonics as well. But it's good practice to train your ears as well.
Nice tips!
Thanks!
Looks decent what’s the price ?...can’t see the cost anywhere Phil
Sorry, price of what? If you mean the full James Hype course, it is on the course page. :)
@@digitaldjtips ahh ok i couldnt see it anywhere
how much is the course?
You can find out all the information on the course, including the price here: djtips.co/hype-course :)
I’m getting if beginner a DJ controller is a Hercules dj impulse 200 good for beginner
Get the 500. They might include Serato Pro for free again like they did back at launch in July for Christmas.
DDJ-400 hasn't disappointed me.
If u were you I'd start with a pionner equipment. I started with traktor s2 then s4 and now I'm on cdj 3000 and it's a Bit hard to get used. Maybe a ddj 400 is the best option and do your evolution on pionner. Greatings
It'd be fine (we're pretty lucky as far as entry level gear goes these days) however if you really get into DJing you may find yourself outgrowing it pretty quickly
@@digitaldjtips ok cause in like 2 to 4 years my mom is going to get me the Dj impulse 400 or 500 so thank you
i love how awkward james hype looks when the other guy is explaining something
What iems does James use?
Ha ha I thought you means "what items does James use?" till I re-read it! He uses Shure SE535
@@digitaldjtips thanks for the info in that, appreciate it 👌 keep up the great content
Does he use Mix in key software for his sets- DYING to know.... anybody?
No
James Hype King! :D
James is awesome!
HES A FUCKING GOD
Haha he's a beast for sure!
Does James have beat quantize on or off? In his sets he presses hot cues repeatedly so fast it must be on but it’s hard when setting new loops perfectly
likely he has quantize on but has the quantize value set to a fraction of a beat like 1/4 rather that the normal 1 beat most people use
He turns it on to set loops then off again
I really wanted to watch this, but the constant chipping in about controllers not having this and that…James Hype doesn’t play with a controller. It would be way better if there was one vid for cdj’s and a different vid for controllers that pauses when he says something and dub over with the specific things for controller users 🤷🏽♂️
Thanks for giving it a go, J-Moz.
Djs that overdrive the Gain are emeditlty removed from my gear...
If you ain't redlining, you ain't headlining ;)
@@digitaldjtips 7:20 so that makes James what?
Sensible! haha :)
i notice James always like to grip his shirt with his hand. Is his hand always get wet or?
All DJs have a little idiosyncrasy, with me it is twirling my headphones cable!
I lowkey always thought it was from sweaty hands, it makes it hard with sweaty hands to throw the jogs back
He hasn't mentioned the pitch control why?
Dude has veins a junky would pay for!
Yall need a proper american dj to show you all whats up. I volunteer!
Lol, thanks Angela! :)

Master tempo is basically cheating so anyone can DJ.
Thanks for your opinion Jay.
Does jame go wireless with his in ears? Cheers
No
