  • How to win tennis matches? In this tennis lesson, we will be talking about a subject we believe is incredibly important: tennis technique. We will show you some tennis techniques you should know to level up as a player. But we are approaching it differently. It is natural to aim at improving your technique (we do it ourselves) but when it comes to winning more matches, overthinking your strokes can be a massive problem. So we want to point out some of the issues over obsessing over technique and some of the ways you can continue to develop your strokes without causing problems during a match. Hope you enjoy it!!

    Hi everyone, Karue here. Quick question for you. How do you like this style of video? I know it is a little unconventional for tennis videos not to be filmed on court but because of my work I can’t film practices and my schedule can be a bit hectic. But I do believe that learning “why” is as important as learning the “how” in tennis. Sometimes we want to learn how to hit a certain shot but we don’t even know why and when to hit it. Let us know in the comments below. Have a great week!!!

    Excellent video. My eyes were opened recently on this subject. Not wishing to summarise too much (because this video touches on a lot of different areas, especially for those of us who don't have loads of time to work on technique), there's a huge difference between "hitting the ball well" and "knowing who you are as a player" and doing what you have to do to win matches.

    Thanks for the great vide and advice! :)
    I'm an intermediate player, playing 2-3 times a week.
    I was always trying to find perfect racket and strings by changing them every 2-3 weeks, constantly improve my technic by watching videos on youtube, trying to hit angles to get quick points, etc :)) thinking it will help me to win matches, but it worked quite the opposite and I was losing points and matches. So I decided to stop changing my rackets every month and work more on my footsteps and contact with the ball.
    Now after watching this video, I realized that I need to work more on improving the base, my fitness, footwork, contact with the ball, and find my own way how to play and win matches with the technic that I already have.
    Thank guys for the great content, that video was really helpful to me.

      That's awesome feedback. Love that we could help you. Most important thing is to learn who you are on the court so you can train appropriately. Footwork is key as well! Stick to a racket, a string and a tension, don't change too much!

    I played tennis here in Spain for 10-12 years and stopped cause I was studying music and finishing my high school at the same time. Last summer I started playing again and I was so keen to compete once more that I didn't pay muuch attention to the status of my technique. This video shows a goddamn truth. As any sport or artistic discipline of this life, you gotta put a lot of hard work in besides the technique, which I truly believe is shown in every performance.

    I like this video. I often focus on the wrong things when trying to improve. I waste so much time and effort trying to find the perfect racket. If I used that energy to work on my footwork I'm sure I would elevate my game a couple of levels.

    Another great set of advice. As much as I think that without solid fundamentals, you'll eventually get stuck in progression, getting obsessed about getting a perfect technique and overlooking tremendously important parts of the game such as footwork and ball recognition would be very counter productive (and I am not even speaking about mental or strategy in an actual match)

    So true man! I find I play to my full potential if I go in with a clear mind and just focus on the basics (hitting the ball cleanly, executing a plan, adapting to the situation). Thinking about technique can be very paralyzing. I've hit with top 100 pros before and none of them think about technique when playing!

    • @elg0rdo351
      @elg0rdo351 4 года назад

      Even Top 50 players address technique frequently. Playing points in different conditions, playing different opponents, being tired from traveling etc. are factors which can deteriorate technique. Players and coaches go against that with focus when a block of tournaments has been finished.

    • @iagreewithyou112
      @iagreewithyou112 4 года назад +2

      @@elg0rdo351 I think you missed my point. There is a time and place to focus on technique, matchplay isn't one of them. If a player has dedicated time to work with a coach, then sure, they will work on technique. But I guarantee you none of the top guys are thinking about technique (e.g. I need to hit my forehand this way) when they're playing a match.

  • @elg0rdo351
    @elg0rdo351 4 года назад +6

    I see this matter differently as a coach: when playing one or two times a week, winning matches isn't important, I believe. Then learning and having fun is important. In this exact order. When playing for results, one has to train for results which means playing more frequently. Additionally, all those mentioned factors like strategy, tactics, fitness, tournament planning etc. come into play. :)
    What's interesting is that there are different philosophies around the world on this topic. Here in Germany, chasing every ball down at the baseline and bringing it back is taught from an early age. Making players complete and giving them options by teaching them all the strokes is neglected. In Eastern Europe it's the total opposite. The coach asks the parents or the kid: "when does winning get important, at the age of 10 or 16?" And it's said: if he or she isn't a competitor, that's fine right? Especially, when they play gracefully. Results are temporary but what remains is beautiful tennis."

    • @Karueselltennis
      @Karueselltennis  4 года назад +6

      Absolutely, different places have different philosophies. I'm not necessarily talking about junior development here. Focusing a bit more on the people who picked up tennis a bit later in their lives and like to play events at their club and so forth. A lot of them end up stuck in this loop of "I lost so I need to improve my technique" and it can be a problem. Early development is much different (kids and teenagers) and I agree they should be taught proper strokes from an early age. Focus on this video more about players who reached the level where leveling up becomes slower and they get impatient.
      Thanks for the feedback

    • @poida007
      @poida007 3 года назад

      Some interesting points and perspectives, thanks for sharing. Here’s another perspective. People at all levels play for different reasons, some just want to compete, some want a workout, others focus on the social aspect (doubles), some want to learn a new skill. A good coach needs to understand the motivation of the player and their goals. It’s a delicate balance of different priorities and limitations at all levels.

      My Tennis HQ I’m interested to see how you cover a down the line offensive shot from an opponent. Especially after cross court rally’s, an attack down the line on my backhand side. Would love to see your approach or technique weather it’ll be a backhand slice cross or lob or more spin. I’m a one hander, I find my first mistake is sprinting to the ball rather then hop and shuffle . I’m very quick on the court but my technic falls short as I’m out of balance after sprinting to hit a backhand. Doesn’t work all the time but I do get a nice cross slice only when I have dominant shoulder behind the ball.

      My Tennis HQ Agree. I changed my favourite sport from football to tennis and it has been around 3 years. As a self-taught player, I cannot agree more than this, Although there are many stuffs to improve in terms of my technique, I have won against a few players who are technically better than me. So I completely agree on your point. TBH, I have put a lot of effort on my footwork and early contact most of time and glad that I have been on right track.

  • @poida007
    @poida007 3 года назад

    Agree! Excellent points. Non advanced players need to understand the relationship between technique and tactics, even beginners. The mental side of tennis is the most important. So is the physical. Tennis is an open skill sport. Read Brad Gilbert’s book “Winning Ugly”.
    A rec player with good fitness and hand eye coordination who can achieve good consistent contact will consistently beat the player searching for the Federer FH.
    An excellent honest video about the hard reality of tennis improvement, especially as you age and you physically and mentally slow down. That’s why pickleball is on the rise. Tennis 🎾 is a very difficult sport, perhaps the most difficult, certainly the most demanding, regardless of level. But certainly, the higher the level, the more demanding. That’s what makes Rafa so impressive. I hope he wins another RG or two but I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t. Time waits for no one.

    Well i think you're rigth but as a junior player, i think improve my tecnique will make me better player, my forehand is so bad that i need sometimes make forehand slice to play points, my opinión is you can improve your technique but only the básics and later when i mastered my forehand or anything else, i will start to play naturally without thinking in that, so what you said is true technique is not everything and you need to improve other aspects of your game to succed.

    • @Karueselltennis
      @Karueselltennis  4 года назад +1

      Absolutely. That is why I mentioned that there is a time and place for either one. This isn't necessarily a video for junior players because you spend more time on court. And even if your forehand is not what you want it to be right now (trust me I know the feeling man) it is important to still be able to compete and use whatever you have on that day to give yourself a chance. The key point is that technique improvements takes a long time and it may bring your confidence down along the way (before it goes up). So being patient through the ups and downs is going to be super helpful for you! Let us know if we can help with your forehand somehow 💪🏻

    lets be honest here. the successful players dont really understand why they are successful. its not rocket science to play smart. im speaking about my own past here, but many will surely relate. its simply about the ability to control your emotions and find that inner peace once your playing a match that counts. federer e.g. and you karue... you didnt TRAIN this, you grew up with it and i think you dont even realize, because you dont know any other way.
    i confronted my past recently and let go a lot of shit that isnt even my own idea of life and suddenly... all on the court is clear like ... a new language. its not overly complicated, but if you cant even look because youre too stressed out to walk straight, you wont get any of it.
