ever since i saw Medvedev i knew he is pro pusher, but so is Djokovic, this is what happens to me for the 2 years now, always beeing better hitter but loosing:) i started playing tennis 3.5 y ago from scratch and still not having my game because trying to learn as much as possible good strikes:) i have 10x better serve but on clay it doesnt help and not beeing able to hv good net game does not help, gamestyle means complete game:) not just bits

He's a great shotmaker and he also uses high percentage shots a lot, hit in a row, that keeps him position for the winner and wears out the opponent. A great player.
Angles, angles and even tighter angles. That's what does better than anyone else, and even from totally impossible positions. I welcome this style of play and hope that this era of just bashing the ball as hard as you can comes to an end. Physical strength and athleticism can on occasion be no match for a superior tennis brain.
@@KaruesellHQ Those tight angles are done with nadal's forehand for the more tighter the spin, the more you can open up the court with angles.. This is a staple if you are playing in ATP tennis. You need the buggy whip. You can't just play straight balls all the time. Mendelev hits angles so he can open up the court.
Medvedev is definitely an enigma. I don’t know if it’s the strokes or his body control to where it seems he gets to everything without being the fastest player in the world. It looks almost uncoordinated but is actually extremely coordinated. I know that really doesn’t make sense but it’s the best way I can think of it because like I said he is an enigma, and I’m left confused every time I watch him play

I think pros are really challenged, especially mentally. I can only imagine the nightmare it must be to play against him, and honestly, I doubt they have fun playing with him at all.
Here just after watching Australian Open. I agree that I don't find his style particularly aesthetically pleasing, but it is fascinating, and if you're rooting for him, very stressful to watch. I almost feel like he's winning in spite of how he plays. He almost seems to wait the tiniest bit more than he should to swing or to react and get to a ball. He has the reflexes and the speed to make it work, but I keep wanting to fix it so he doesn't have to try so hard (not that I could). But....those very qualities almost make me giddy watching him. Like, you shouldn't be able to do that! How is he getting to those shots? And the rebel in me applauds him because it's almost as if he refused to mold into what he SHOULD be and stayed true to his own identity. And I definitely love that about him. He reminds me of a guy I saw at a local tournament. He was doing everything wrong! Holding his racket with one hand only while waiting to return, exaggerating his knee bounce on his serve...he just looked like a beginner. But he mopped the court with a much more polished player. It was insane! Anyway, love Daniil for his attitude and approach. ❤️
i would say medvedev is more towards novak playstyle where he focuses on where the ball should bounce instead of the overpowering opponent strokes. bouncing the short, makes the player run forward. bouncing the back, prevents the opponent from attacking. bouncing wide makes the opponent stretches for the ball uncomfortably. the best part of his technique is the opponent cannot guess where he is going to hit based on his form. its all about talent from that point.

I think the best players are the ones who know how to utilize and listen to their own bodies (while not abandoning fundamentals), working with or around their physical quirks. This allows them to easily build off one stroke and makes improvisation more natural.
As an inconsistent, procrastinating, and long-time amateur player reaching middle-age, I've finally caught the itch and seriously committing to the/my game. Wow, all it took was COVID. lol. That said, exceptionally eye opening analysis. "Swing your Swing." Outstandingly helpful and enlightening vid. Keep em' coming.

This was a first rate analysis that really made me think about my own game. Too often I get into a mindset of trying to play like so and so when what I should be doing are the few things I'm good at that make my opponents uncomfortable but that I can do all day long.

I really admire his gutsy playing style and at the same time his ability to understand the game. He is almost always at the right place at the right time. His serve motion is actually very smooth, effective and beautiful. If you want to see an ugly ineffective serve motion (despite the high sped amd aces) just watch Zverev. Medvedev is one of the most creative and intelligent players. You can also tell by his interviews, his language skills, how he doesn't crack when the crowd is booing and how he can rven manipulate the crowd without losing focus. Also his shot selection is smart. He would never unnecessarily play wonderful "clown" shots like Kyrgios does. I enjoyed your analysis very much. Especially your advice to see tennis as a game for individuals. So more "playing" and more individual choices.
Are we not gonna talk about his backhand? That's his best shot by far, one of the best in the world. He changes direction with it so easily, hits it hard and flat, stays so low, always gets great depth, hardly misses.

Agreed %100. I think too many players, pro and recreational including my self, are trying to play a game other than our own. I believe once we develop our own game we'll better understand ourselves and win more matches.

I think his mechanics work for his lanky structure but yes definitely don't be afraid to break away from convention. Convention always only gets you so far as the rest follow it. After a point, you have to carve your own path.
This is might be an awful comparison. But, for me he reminds me of 04-07 Fed with all the variety. Although slightly reversed more often fed would play aggressive more often but was not afraid to play defensive. (Medvedev prefers more defensive and like you said not afraid to play offensively) However both controlled tempo and hit insane angles. Just my opinion.
He has amazing tennis IQ. Reminds me of Nalbandian, not his groundstrokes of course but the way he takes control of the matches vs "better" opponents. Great video
Very intriguing breakdown 👍. Many times I have just focused on his technique and never looked at his overall game. One of the key takeaways is never let your opponent play their brand of tennis. Otherwise you're always on the defensive. Much like a Muay Thai or boxing match, let the adversary have to guess what your next move is and that's when you throw the counter strike.

I remember in bowling when spinners came out and all the traditional hook bowlers got irritated. People maybe forget that in sports, the goal generally is to win. If they are winning against you using non-traditional method, then something is wrong with you, not them.

Great analysis. I would have also spoken about the tempo he is able to both use and generate. His long and weird forehand preparation (in amplitude) seems to help him a lot finding the length , ball effecf and pace. Like a machine, like an engineering. For his backhand the preparation seems not as much exaggerated but he is able to somehow to the same thing. He is like a swiss mechanics of his own brand. A bit like a Gilles Simon, On Steroids.

I am a tennis fan; mostly watching WTA , but I have my fav ATP players that i also fallow. So, not being a player myself ( just occasionally) I don’t understand very well the techniques you are talking about, however Medvedev impressed me last year. Before noticing his styled play I noticed his personality which transpired from his attitude on court. A bit awkward, shy, not really know what to expect the way he reacts, everything about him was/ is intriguing and catching my attention. In the final of ATP London, when at some point I thought he flattens and Thiem was continuing to die hard like in USOpen final; I kept asking myself: what did I like about this guy ( tennisistically speaking) and than how showed me what. His way of playing a type of tennis like performing art. Really performing where he is a character in a movie. He is awesome! Btw, please talk about Rublev too; another very good and special tennis player. Ps. I enjoyed the video; well description of a “ indescribable “ game style “

The only thing I would add, in the form of a caveat I guess, is that longevity for a pro-player surely depends on solid, relaxed, technique - that's why Roger has lasted so long. Daniil's unconventional style looks like it could inflict a fair amount of wear and tear on those long limbs of his, don't you think?
nobody had a more attritional game style than Jimmy Connors yet he was making semis of the us open at 39 and winning 110 tour titles. career longevity is more complicated than simply a relaxed aesthetic
That’s a very good point you make about Conners. My post was more of a question I think. Guga had a very loose relaxed style, and look what happened to him. There’s no one way to success I guess.
Excellent analysis... Could you analyze Thiem's game as if he had won the title? Because to me it could have gone either way. I know this is not about one game in particular but I believe Thiem's game has improved quite dramatically over the last 2 years and there's a lot to learn from it as well. Here after Medvedev won the US open! his unconventional style of play is the reason defensive players like Novak will have a hard time against him. It's tough to tell where this guy is going to hit the ball based on his form which makes him very tough to face!
Superb! I believe it could turn into a very nice series of videos, where Pros game is analyzed in the context of what amateurs can take for their game as well. Also It might help to learn more about ourselves as players, and how we can shape our game to maximize an individual skill set.

a lot has to do with medvedev being able to run every ball down. He still hasn't figured out what to do at the net which joker exposed in the finals. You can tell he is not comfortable at the net and prefers to finish from the baseline. medvedev is a great player and fun to watch due to his unconventional style. Thanks for vid, surprised this channel hasn't blown up yet.
He is definitely messing with there minds. I think that he just jumped his fitness level and doesn't want his opponents to know to soon what his capable of. Like you said, he might be wearing them down before he jumps them. Any sport, when you destroy an opponents mental, he can never come back.

Hey, not sure what you have on the docket video wise, but can you do a video on footwork exercises that can be done in the gym? or just exercises that will maximize your game with fitness, dexterity, and quick feet/hands. Im looking to train for tournaments in the summertime and will be taking the winter off tennis (hitting once a month) to focus on speed, fitness, agility, and footwork

His strokes don't seem that unorthodox to me. We shouldn't judge someone by decelerating the racquet over his shoulder. His loop is pretty common. I think there are other guys that are unorthodox...Chardy, Tomic, Gasquet, Florian Mayer. That said, having seen him played live, I would have never predicted that he'd be in the top 20.
great analysis...but the problem of imitating this is he is unique. Hes 6 ft 5...but he moves like a guy who 6 feet...nobody his size moves as well as him, not even close.

I’m 57 and after quitting tennis 37 years ago (I was a protege of Nick Bolletieri’s back in 1985 and I used to beat a kid called Andre Agassi too back then…), I’ve finally gotten back into tennis! I wonder about my weird style because I have not “found” my game of 1985…so I’m trying to figure out how to win even when I’m just relearning the game. Very intriguing breakdown 👍. Many times I have just focused on his technique and never looked at his overall game. One of the key takeaways is never let your opponent play their brand of tennis. Otherwise you're always on the defensive. Much like a Muay Thai or boxing match, let the adversary have to guess what your next move is and that's when you throw the counter strike.

I remember in bowling when spinners came out and all the traditional hook bowlers got irritated. People maybe forget that in sports, the goal generally is to win. If they are winning against you using non-traditional method, then something is wrong with you, not them.

Great analysis. I would have also spoken about the tempo he is able to both use and generate. His long and weird forehand preparation (in amplitude) seems to help him a lot finding the length , ball effecf and pace. Like a machine, like an engineering. For his backhand the preparation seems not as much exaggerated but he is able to somehow to the same thing. He is like a swiss mechanics of his own brand. A bit like a Gilles Simon, On Steroids.

I am a tennis fan; mostly watching WTA , but I have my fav ATP players that i also fallow. So, not being a player myself ( just occasionally) I don’t understand very well the techniques you are talking about, however Medvedev impressed me last year. Before noticing his styled play I noticed his personality which transpired from his attitude on court. A bit awkward, shy, not really know what to expect the way he reacts, everything about him was/ is intriguing and catching my attention. In the final of ATP London, when at some point I thought he flattens and Thiem was continuing to die hard like in USOpen final; I kept asking myself: what did I like about this guy ( tennisistically speaking) and than how showed me what. His way of playing a type of tennis like performing art. Really performing where he is a character in a movie. He is awesome!
Btw, please talk about Rublev too; another very good and special tennis player.

The only thing I would add, in the form of a caveat I guess, is that longevity for a pro-player surely depends on solid, relaxed, technique - that's why Roger has lasted so long. Daniil's unconventional style looks like it could inflict a fair amount of wear and tear on those long limbs of his, don't you think?
nobody had a more attritional game style than Jimmy Connors yet he was making semis of the us open at 39 and winning 110 tour titles. career longevity is more complicated than simply a relaxed aesthetic
That’s a very good point you make about Conners. My post was more of a question I think. Guga had a very loose relaxed style, and look what happened to him. There’s no one way to success I guess.
Excellent analysis... Could you analyze Thiem's game as if he had won the title? Because to me it could have gone either way. I know this is not about one game in particular but I believe Thiem's game has improved quite dramatically over the last 2 years and there's a lot to learn from it as well. PS.: do you think Thiem went a little too far with the slice backhand so his topspin backhand (more harmful) was a little too shaky to rely on?
I think once the slice backhand stopped working it was definitely hard for him to go back to drive and when he started to it was too late

Here after Medvedev won the US open! his unconventional style of play is the reason defensive players like Novak will have a hard time against him. It's tough to tell where this guy is going to hit the ball based on his form which makes him very tough to face!

Superb! I believe it could turn into a very nice series of videos, where Pros game is analyzed in the context of what amateurs can take for their game as well. Also It might help to learn more about ourselves as players, and how we can shape our game to maximize an individual skill set.

a lot has to do with medvedev being able to run every ball down. He still hasn't figured out what to do at the net which joker exposed in the finals. You can tell he is not comfortable at the net and prefers to finish from the baseline. medvedev is a great player and fun to watch due to his unconventional style. He gives his opponents lots of difficult shots to hit. That's just as effective as hitting with huge power and lots of winners.
He is definitely messing with there minds. I think that he just jumped his fitness level and doesn't want his opponents to know to soon what his capable of. Like you said, he might be wearing them down before he jumps them. Any sport, when you destroy an opponents mental, he can never come back.

seems very hard to do on amateur level, would be happy for a in depth video on reading opponents around these aspects!

Hey, not sure what you have on the docket video wise, but can you do a video on footwork exercises that can be done in the gym? or just exercises that will maximize your game with fitness, dexterity, and quick feet/hands. Im looking to train for tournaments in the summertime and will be taking the winter off tennis (hitting once a month) to focus on speed, fitness, agility, and footwork

His strokes don't seem that unorthodox to me. We shouldn't judge someone by decelerating the racquet over his shoulder. His loop is pretty common. I think there are other guys that are unorthodox...Chardy, Tomic, Gasquet, Florian Mayer. That said, having seen him played live, I would have never predicted that he'd be in the top 20.

great analysis...but the problem of imitating this is he is unique. Hes 6 ft 5...but he moves like a guy who 6 feet...nobody his size moves as well as him, not even close.
That is his whole point: DON'T imitate anyone! ;) But yeah you're right he is pretty unique.

I’m 57 and after quitting tennis 37 years ago (I was a protege of Nick Bolletieri’s back in 1985 and I used to beat a kid called Andre Agassi too back then…), I’ve finally gotten back into tennis! Here’s a video of 3 points when I played my first ITF futures tournament and did great. I wonder about my weird style because I have not “found” my game of 1985…so I’m trying to figure out how to win even when I’m just relearning the game. I appreciate your channel and especially this video. I’m going to use my slice much more especially on the forehand side and drive opponents crazy with its low driving attack. Thanks again.
