Grumpy, fat, retired biker here, and a huge fan of Hiromi…and Anthony, and Simon. This piece is new to me and very sick ! I haven’t looked through your reaction list yet but I’ll say that two of my favorites of her’s are FLASHBACK and DELUSION. Check em out.
My favorite rock performance of Simon is TOTO in Paris 2007 with Leland Sklar on bass. Mind blowing concert and it’s right here on YT. 🤜🤛

Damn, that was quick! 😄Thanks for doing this. I figured, given your previous connection with Hiromi (attending Berklee at the same time) and the AJ factor, that you'd appreciate this and was curious to know what you thought. The axe in question was, I believe, Anthony's signature Fodera Contrabass. Beautiful instrument. Amazing sound. Loved the commentary and glad you brought up Speaking of Now and Voodoo. Listened to both almost daily for a long time after they came out. First time I saw Antonio Sanchez (who is the drummer on SoN) was at Berklee with... I wanna say Gary Burton or Dave Samuels. He was either still a student or had just recently graduated and totally blew our minds. He and Bona were a formidable team in the Metheny group.
Have seen this trio so many times at the Blue Note and other venues, mostly with Si, but also with Steve Smith, which was killer, as well. Hiromi, Anthony, and Simon had this incredible symbiotic relationship musically. It was like they were born to play with one another. I really miss their collaborations. Anyway, thanks again. This was awesome.

This was great. I was already familiar Jackson and Phillipes. I got started in jazz rock when Phil Collins mentioned different artists in many interviews. This included Weather Report (Chester Thompson played with Weather Report, Genesis and most of Phil's solo tours). When I worked in a record store 83-85 my boss introduced me to Metheny, Brecker, DiMeola, Jeff Beck, Scofield, Mahvishnu, RTF, Claude Bolling, George Benson, George Duke, Chick Corea, etc. I was lucky to see Metheny, Hancock, Dejohnette and Holland in 89.

Oh man, I saw Metheny, Hancock, DeJohnette, and Holland in the mid-90s. Unbelievable. Jack and Dave were incredibly gracious and humble. Great guys.

No specs on the Fodera site but if I remember right that would be a 36" scale "Contra Bass" as Mr. Jackson would call it. Basically a Redwood tree with bridge cables. The Man is big, the bass is huge!

Yup, it's the Contrabass. Signature instrument. 36" scale, 28 frets. He was a big guy at one point (slimmed down later), but not tall. 5'7", *maybe* 5'8".

Great stuff. Too early in the day for a Hennessy VSOP. Is there a unique genre/sub-genre for this music?

This music is above my pay grade 😁 but i am curious - what was going on around 9:30 to 10:00 that got a strong reaction? It seems likes she playing some extended chord arpeggios? Maybe with a chromatic progression in parts?

The rhythm. It has to do with the combination of what the three of them are playing together.

Love you getting into the straight-ahead! I agree: pickup hybrid acoustic/hollow body?
Love that you're "a jazzer," too!

Forgot to say... even though I don't really know what's going on, I can still tell somehow that there is alot going on, whereas with Jason's Cappucino, I like what's happening, but don't see the depth that I see here, even though, I don't understand... I'll just stop talking now 😁- I'm confident Justin knows what I'm trying to say
