    Actually, the whole thing about Nintendo thinking Western gamers were too bad for the game is apparently untrue. According to a few accounts, the game was actually reviewed rather poorly in Japan too.

      It’s probably true. You have to understand that games like SMB was what got the video game market’s shit back together, they had to be careful to not scare away the customer.

    I personally prefer the one in the US. Lost Levels feels like something you’d give to a friend to torture them. The fact you have to play it 8 times is already painful enough after reaching the game half way

    My opinion is that SMB2(Doki Doki reskin) is the true sequal because of the lasting impact it had on the direction of the franchise. If PAL SMB2 flopped, we may have seen the return to form SMWorld be the formula by which the series made it's unbending backbone but because PAL SMB2 was so difference and still found huge success, it gave Miyamoto the confidence to try new things with the character and thanks to that we got SM64, Sunshine, 2 Galaxy games, Odyssey, Kart games, Party games, sports games, etc.

  • @mkayrose6070

    This has to be said. The US didn't get Lost Levels not just because they feared US gamers couldn't handle the difficulty (considering all the hard games that was released in US on the NES like Zelda 2 for example, there's a reason why the trope "Nintendo Hard" exist) it was because it was way to similar to SMB1 visually and mechanically. It's pretty much a rom hack.
    Japanese reviewers also complained about the difficulty btw.

    • @carlosbleu7396

      They also complained about the strong lack of novelty.

    Super Mario Bros 2 established the Mario characters as they are known todaylike Toad being fast, Luigi jumping higher, ect. Lost Levels felt like a romhack on the 1st game.

      Toad probably would have been given a fast/lightweight attribute in Mario Kart if SMB2 didn't exist. And the original SMB2 (Lost Levels) already had a floaty higher jumping Luigi. Other Mario mainstays did originate from SMB2 though.

    • @user-nz8mx9ok9t
      @user-nz8mx9ok9t 3 месяца назад

      Is toad known for being "fast" though? Most of the time, he's just a background character. He's a small racer in Mario Kart, but that means he has better acceleration, not higher speed. In fact, in the newer Mario Kart games, the lightest characters have slower overall speed, just the highest acceleration. And Luigi having a higher jump is from SMB2, not SMBUSA. The four characters having different attributes comes from Doki Doki Panic, and by design for that game as its own thing. And those characters were only reskinned as Mario characters for SMBUSA after the design choice was made. Luigi's reskin as the high jumper was due to him being known as a high jumper in SMB2 c1986.

  • @TheRandomDuck99

    It wasn't just because of the difficulty the reason that the japanese Super Mario 2 wasn't released in the rest of the world. It was also because the game was identical to Super Mario 1, so by the time it would came to USA it could be outdated and not innovative like the first game.
    Also, Doki Doki Panic was developed by the same team that made SMB1, it's not like they choose a random game and they put the Mario characters there.

    Without SMB2 USA, we'd be missing so many gameplay elements and characters that helped shape the series to this very day. SMB Lost Levels is... fine as its own thing. And is the "real" SMB2 obviously... but it truly adds almost nothing to the series and was just "SMB1 Challenge Mode".

    • @umaniezealah667
      @umaniezealah667 6 месяцев назад

      I prefer SMB2 USA because it actually impacted the series. Without SMB2 USA, there would be no Bob-omb Battlefield in SM64, Shy Guys in Yoshi's Island, or Birdo in spin off Mario games. The Lost Levels is insanely difficult and so unoriginal.

    Not bad, Demeech.
    I am more into the American SMB2, what with its much more forgiving difficulty and refreshing originality. After playing it when I was eight years old in 2000, I learned more about it as I got older. It's not my most beloved Mario romp, but is loads of fun regardless.
    Lost Levels isn't horrible, but the large difficulty spikes and asinine requirement of beating the original version eight times to access the bonus levels keeps it as one of my least favorite Mario games. I managed to beat the GBC version after much trial and error.
    Great video!

    That whole thing of "Nintendo thinking the USA couldn't handle the Lost Levels" is not true at all. Not only was it punishing, but it looked like an extension pack of the 1st game, and since the USA was still recovering from the crisis, it would have been super risky to release it in the USA

    The tester, who told NoA to not release the original SMB 2 was reportedly Howard Phillips, a very important figure in Nintendo in the 80s. His reasoning for why SMB 2 should not be released was not the high difficulty level, but frustrating, at times brutal game design. He told Nintendo that the game would not be fun for kids, who were the main audience of the first game. He was afraid that SMB 2 would tarnish Nintendo's reputation. I'd say he made the right call, and SMB 2/USA does fill the shoes of a sequel pretty well.

    I wish in addition to the "Lost Levels" we got the arcade stuff outside of Japan too at some point. Who wouldn't want to experiece old Mario games. I still hope we get some Virtual Game ports in Black and White (yes, that's important because I don't want eye cancer and play that Wario game that looks amazing).
    I think Mario 2 remake on GBA also had e-reader support allowing you to use actual power ups in certain levels
    good video btw. I like the Super Mario Bros 2 USA was better. I actually disliked the game as a kid for being so different from Super Mario Bros but after a while it grew on me.

    I will say one thing, I kinda hate how the narrative of why Doki Doki Panic replaced Lost Levels in the US gets Telephone'd into "Oh NOJ/NOA just though American kids were too stupid dumb babies to handle a TRULY HARD Mario game so they reskinned this completely random game instead for international audiences" when the actual verdict wasn't just "The game is too punishing", it was also "and it's too derivative, visually and gameplay wise, of the original game to make that difficulty playable to a US audience" which was in part - yes - because of the Video Game Crash of 83 when the 2600 was plagued with clones and bootlegs that were also punishingly hard.
    Because clearly, kids in the US do like punishing and hard games. The ongoing fond legacy of Ninja Gaiden and Contra is proof that hard games from that era were beloved by US kids. But as a lot of the comments have said, the whole "punishing and having nothing interesting to differentiate it from the previous entry" seems to have rung true, and NOA/NOJ was wise to make the decision they did
    Also FWIW I feel like it's important to note that Miyamoto told the DDP team to develop the game to "feel Mario-esque"

    Another thing you can thank Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) for is the Yoshi’s Island Series as a lot of enemies like shy guys and sniffits got their stars in Super Mario Bros 2. Kids who grew up in the 80s, there’d have been no Super Mario Bros Super Show as we knew it.

    Honestly, even though the western SMB2 feels different from the entire franchise mechanicwise, it's quite clearly the superior game out of the 2
    The Lost Levels' biggest issue to me isn't even its difficulty, but the fact that it's basically the same game as before, no innovation, nothing new,
    it feels more like an ultimate version of the first game, not exactly a sequel.

    When I was a kid, playing All Stars, I thought at the time "Lost Levels" was just a remix of SMB1 to give people who bought the trilogy for SNES something new to play. But I played it regardless. It ended up being the one I played 2nd most (usually I played SMB3 when I played All Stars). I enjoyed the challenge and I liked Luigi's new tradeoff abilities. I completed three of the four. The one I didn't finish was SMB2 (USA). Never got into that one.
    As an adult, realising that SMB2 was the original sequel, I don't even think about SMBUSA. It was too off for me. I still have yet to beat SMB2 for FamiCom, which I do own, but then again I've only ever beat SMB1 on All Stars; not on NES. So, those two go hand-in-hand for me. I actually stopped playing Mario games after Yoshi's Island. They got a little too easycheesy for my taste, especially when they went 3D. I miss when Mario games presented a challenge. I also prefer the FamiCom version of SMB3 because the tweaks they made to make it easier for western players weren't present. Plays much more like the original.

    I don't care if the Super Mario Bros. 2 is a reskin of Doki Doki Panic, it's a really fun game and a worthy sequel despite (or rather because of) being different to the first game or any other 2D Mario games that came after. It's better than the Lost Levels because it looks too similar to Super Mario Bros. and it's soooo hard (I have never EVER finished it, not even on All-Stars which at least have a save file).

  • @SuperNickid
    @SuperNickid Год назад

    @Demeech: 5minutes and 45 seconds in an you are already wrong about the level after World 8 you need to beat it 8 times without warping. To unlock world A throught D in its original 8 bit version beat 8-4 8 times but you can used Warp zone to help you out makeing it easier, the traid off World A throught D will be easier that its All-star version since the original 8 bit even if Warp zone are used it is a task that will take a long time to accomplish. World 9 is the only one that you cannot used any warp zone however this is only truth for the All-stars version, this is not truth for the original 8 bit version of the game since it was unable to flag if you used the warp zone pipe, so instead it flag if you beat a castle level, and using a backward warp zone in this version does not remove the already clear castle flag. So for example in this 8bit version if you beat all the level untill world 3-1 and accidently found warp zone to world 1, and used it, just found the warp back to world 3 in 1-2, the same thing happen if you beat all level and your in world 8 and accidently found warp zone to world 5, just found the warp zone back to world 8 in 5-2. World 9 still become accessable since you never skip a castle that you did not beat yet. World 9 is easier to get in the original 8 bit version so the trade off they made it harder, but it is only hard because you only have one life to play it, and failing to beat it mean you have to beat all 8 castle again to just have another chance, however this rarely happen since world 9 is easier for a water level, unless your extremly bad at playing mario games. Why do I hate world 9 in the All-stars version the reason is not because it is harder to unlock, it is because the update graphic makes it lose its original meaning. World 9 was meant to look like a glitch level and that is what the original 8 bit version did as a refrence to Super mario bros. FDS version minus world glitch. In the all-stars version only 9-3 retain the glitch level vibe because it is not a water level. In the All-stars version world A through D are mush harder because you only have to be 8-4 one time, and including world 9 does not effect the unlock of World A through D, if you don't qualified for world 9 after 8-4 it will go to A-1, but if you do qualified for world 9 world A-1 will appear after 9-4. In the original 8 bit version beating world 9-4 return you back to world 9-1 meaning you neeed a game over to get out, or turn off the console. This is because it focus on unlocking A through D instead.

    First, who in their right mind would think Mario Teaches Typing is better than Super Mario Bros. 2? Must be a Twitter user. I think Super Mario Bros. 2 is the better sequel, it introduced many new characters and enemies that are series staples, and was an incredibly creative game that's left a lasting impact on Mario ever since. The Lost Levels is a game not meant for us, it's meant for those virtue signaling puritans that work for Kotaku, it's the perfect dosage of pain for game journalists everywhere. It happened because then Nintendo president of America Reggie Fils-Aimé used a time machine invented by Apple to travel back to the year 1986 because he saw that games were getting too easy, and gaming journalists needed to be put in their place, so he arrived at Nintendo HQ and commissioned the development of Super Mario Bros. 2, but Nintendo executives feared the release of such a difficult game would come to their international audience to resent them and flock back to Atari, so the game was locked away in the vault until the release of Super Mario All-Stars.
    I can't believe I never watched this until now! Hehe, for the start to Trash, or Treasure, it certainly began with quite the bang! Excellent job on this, my friend!

    But regarding the video, I'm with you. Right now I do prefer the SNES remaster of The Lost Levels over the NES counterpart. But overall, I can enjoy the International version more as it is more playable and does feel more unique for its time (even if it uses assets from a different game).

    The Koopa was not in mario usa until the game boy adventure. Between the original lost levels and mario usa, I will have to pick the lost levels. Mario usa controls did not age too well and the game is too long in it's level design. Lost level controls are tighter then the original super mario brothers and the levels are very short and easy to breeze through once your learned them through trial and error. Personally I enjoy lost levels for it's challenge and my preferred way to play the title is through the game and watch mario edit since I do not have to go through the hassle of plugging of the wii / wii u to play the title. Overall it all comes to Personal preference, if the user wanted a good pick up and play title then mario usa is the choice, if the user want a challenging traditional mario then lost level is the right choice.

    Super Mario Bros 2 is the better game. Nah, maybe I like Super Mario Bros 2 more.

    Super Mario Brothers 2, a lie? A bit harsh. More like borderline plagiarism.

    I know that might sound insane but I hate the remakes of smb2 usa they sucked all the energy from it and it just ruined the game for me I prefer the og version

      How? All the remakes play very similarly to the original NES game with some upgraded graphics. Though the GBA version is easier then the NES or SNES versions.

    I think if you followed me on Twitter, and know how much I care about the potential of 2D Mario, it’s a clear answer from me as to which is the better deal

    Either way, both games are still better than New Super Mario Bros 2.
    The original sequels may have been "lies" (no they weren't), but they weren't hiding their identities.
    New Super Mario Bros 2 was announced as a COMPLETELY NEW type of Mario, only for it to become a game about unlocking new title screens.

      Nah. I would much rather play NSMB2 over Lost Levels since would at least be able to somewhat enjoy the game instead of being constantly frustrated over the shitty level design of Lost Levels.
