  • TW: blood, mild gore, disturbing visuals
    Fear is contagious.
The fifth song in my EP, "Insanity Pop," in which we see a specific fan of Abbi's life.
Listen to the full EP: • Insanity Pop!
    Art: PinkA
    Song/Video: charM P
    Soundcloud (+ download): soundcloud.com...
    Off-vocal: www.mediafire....
    Spotify: open.spotify.c...
    Q&A:
Will this be on Spotify/other streaming platforms?
Yes! You can stream it on Spotify using the link above and it should be available to search on other platforms.
Can I use this in a video/TikTok/while practicing my juggling act?
Go for it! Just make sure people know where the music comes from.
Can I do a cover of this?
Yes! The off-vocal is linked above.
Can I do (x) with this song?
I go by the Freddie Mercury principle of music. “Do whatever you want with my music, just don't make it boring.” As long as you’re not running around telling everyone you made this song, you can do what you want.
    Lyrics:
    Don't talk about your makeup
    Don't talk about perfume
There are sections of the store that I can never go into
Cause when I step through the doorway
    She'll confiscate my shoes
Then I'll wrack my brain for every frame
So I'll know when to mute
And I'll pray to the tree
Like the one that's on TV
And I'll ask for tape and glue and paste
    And really anything
How to be a better clown
    How to master juggling
Even if I make her frown
Well, at least she's not thinking
    And Abbi doesn't understand
Keep it all away from her!
    Glitter! Glitter! Glitter! Glitter!
Keep it all away from her!
    Glitter! Glitter! Glitter! Glitter!
Keep it all away from her!
    Glitter! Glitter! Glitter! Glitter!
Keep it all away from her!
    Glitter! Glitter! Glitter! Glitter!
    Glitter bomb spike!
    The terror in her eyes
The slam of a door, and her shrieking piercing cries
    She's screaming! She's screaming!
    It's in the other room
But she's reeling from the reel that playing on an endless loop
So I'll pray to the tree
    Begging on my fucking knees
Don't touch the button but it triggers
Cause now she can't even sleep
Try to be a better clown
    Try to master juggling
And I always make her frown
But at least she's not thinking
    And Abbi doesn't understand
    The songbird doesn't understand
They never understand how scared I am that
No one has a plan to save her
Keep it all away from her!
    Glitter! Glitter! Glitter! Glitter!
Keep it all away from her!
    Glitter! Glitter! Glitter! Glitter!
Keep it all away from her!
    Glitter! Glitter! Glitter! Glitter!
Keep it all away from her!
    Glitter! Glitter! Glitter! Glitter!
And I scrubbed and I scrubbed
    Thinking I'll reclaim that shine
But the sparkles turn to specks
In the mirrors of her mind
She can see it in the floorboards
In the cracks in the den
She can't eat, she can't breath
Cause it's getting on her skin
    There's glitter underneath her fingernails
Rip them out! Rip them out! Rip them out! Out! Out! Out!
Glitter stuck to the back of her tongue
Rip it out! Rip it out! Rip it out! Out! Out! Out!
Glitter in the tears coming from her eyes
Rip them out! Rip them out! Rip them out! Out! Out! Out!
Glitter in the blood coming from her heart
Rip it out! Rip it out! Rip it out! Out! Out! Out!
And I don't know how to save her.

i see this as representation of how difficult it is to help someone struggling with mental health and how trying to "cheer them up" instead of showing kindness and trust can have the opposite effect and worsen their state while ruining your relationship

I'm not fully sure what this is about, but it seems like someone is trying to make Abbi happy and distract her from all the bad things happening to her, but it never works. She's constantly walking on eggshells and avoiding certain topics, but as hard as she's trying, she can't save Abbi. She feels that it's up to her, since no one else is going to try and Abbi isn't trying for herself. Amazing song! I can't wait to see where the story goes next!

this was the first song in the series that i saw, so i thought the singer was abbi’s sister who was trying to distract her from harming herself after going through something, but there were so many things that reminded abbi of that incident that the singer couldn’t stop her.

this perfectly envokes the feeling of hopelessness and thinking you can't save someone from hurting themselves. the guilt you feel from it, too.
    this is very good

My interpretation is that the girl with the buns is trying to distract the other girl from something traumatic that happened.
I think the “glitter bomb” represents the traumatic event. Especially with the “reeling at the reel playing on an endless loop” line. I’m guessing glitter was used as a metaphor here because glitter gets everywhere and you always end up finding it in unexpected places. The girl seeing the glitter everywhere probably represents how everything reminds her of the trauma.
The girl with the buns trying to clean up the glitter could mean that she’s trying to account for every potential reminder of the trauma and hide it from her, but she still is always reminded of what happened. I think the first verse with muting the TV also refers to her trying to protect her from potential reminders.

I hope we see more of this character. This kind of obsessive (possibly slightly parasoical?) relationship is not something people write songs about often. The last song was also a little like this, but that felt more like a general fan reaction than this very clear pov here.
Edit: Just read the Tumblr post. I was spot on with the vibes I was getting!

for me it sounds like trying to protect someone from themself. yet in the process only hurting them more.
light pink represents happiness I believe. or good feelings.
neon pink represents ‘too much’ happiness. or something deceitful.
    1. the first scene shows they were once in a safe and happy relationship. A light pink, soothing to the eyes. 0:03 before going completely monochrome.
    2. 0:24 makeup in general is a happy thing for self expression. Yet it also can be to cover something ‘ugly’. there’s perfume. A nice smell, but covers a foul stench. showing how innocent gifts could come off as double sided.
    3. 0:26 Abbi is shown to be overly protective of the mc. Even the act of leaving to go to the store. Or more specifically. Going outside into the dangerous world.
    4. 0:33 Mc watches every frame of the shows they watch together unable to enjoy it out of fear of triggering Abbi‘s past.
    5. 0:34 Praying to the tree on tv. A bit confusing, but I assume this may be a family tree. Or praying to something that will not ever answer, instead of actively working towards change.
    6. 0:37 tape glue and paste are all things to ‘fix’ something. (perhaps the dynamic)
    7. 0:40 she wants to entertain Abbi and keep her happy. Yet it seems to not ever work. Her attempts to comfort seem to annoy Abbi yet she’s glad she seems okay.
    8. Abbi says on the phone ‘happiness is a decision you make everyday’, despite ironically, ‘choosing’ to see the negative in mc’s every attempt to please her.
(chorus): She’s trying to cover Abbi’s eyes, in a protective fashion. To keep the ‘bad’ things away from her. The cartoony sound effects of bouncing, falling, and being whacked in a playful way. Shows how cartoons lighten up dark themes.
    9. 1:00 glitter bomb spike.
this is more complicated, but i suspect Mc tried to surprise Abbi with a gift. Probably not even a bad one. Yet all it did was remind Abbi of the things she never got to have.
    10. 1:03 Abbi hides and shrieks from painful unspecified memories. While Mc is genuinely confused, and had no ill intent.
    11. 1:08 she’s repeating the bad memory over and over in her head. from the gift.
    12. 1:13 she prays again, this time on her knees. The pausing of the tv remote now just reminds Abbi of how sensitive she is or how easily she is triggered. (I suspect. could be wrong).
    12. 1:24 On the phone this time it’s negative. Saying “sexist bullshit. god forbid women do anything.” unsure what it’s referencing.
    13. Abbi is the ‘song bird’ I suspect. Song birds are beloved birds, and despite everything Mc loves her. And just wants things to be okay. She knows she’s the only one who can try to save her.
    14. 1:55 is an allegory for how she tries to ‘clean’ Abbi’s environment to keep it safe. Yet it only causes Abbi more stress, due to the codependency of their relationship.
    15. 2:00 I’m unsure what she sees, but the ‘glitter’ is catching up to her. making her question how much of Mc’s actions were just to protect her than love. The constant lying and deception to ‘keep’ her safe.
or it could be intrusive thoughts haunting her about her past too. Listing the areas it happened then to her own body.
    16. fingernails could be the ‘traces’ of the past underneath the nails. Or possibly the dirt that makes her feel dirty.
    17. having a bad taste in her mouth after the incident. possibly a taste reminded her.
    18. to not cry anymore. She maybe blames her emotions for all this happening. or from the affect of what she saw.
    19. heart could be her love. thinking she’s incapable of loving anyone.
last chorus: this time there are sounds of the phone beeping. and overwhelming real world.
    20. quite self explanatory.
    extra thoughts:
they’re both bunnies. bunnies are often prey animals. something tells me they are both traumatized by the past but mc wanted to be strong for Abbi.

despite not relating to this song, i have a friend who does.
every time i have a breakdown, every time i tell him i want to die, every time i vent to him, he always tries to make me happier. he tells me its okay. he tells me it doesnt help. he tries his best. even through the screen, i can tell hes panicking and on the verge of tears.
im better now thanks to him and various other people. i dont think anyone else can grant me the same amount of kindness that he did. no one can ever bring me the same amount of joy. no one can replace him.

A pretty interesting song, reading through all the comments and especially the further thoughts in the link the description, it's interesting that I get a different kind of narrative from the song. Certainly no disrespect to the original intentions or other perspectives behind the song, but I wanted to offer out my own thoughts.
Overall, the song felt a lot more like an unrequited devotion kind of. If anyone has happened to also have played, The Beginner's Guide, then you might draw some parallels. Rather than taking Abbi as depressive or troubled, take the fan, as it seems they are, as paranoid or even obsessive over Abbi's wellbeing.
The weakest part of this is the very first part, but I could argue it's a way of protective isolation. Don't remind Abbi of their makeup, or their clothes (confiscating the fan's shoes is simple the thought of Abbi making them restrict themselves), and then distancing them from other people and putting them on mute.
Then similarly, the fan does everything they can to distract, show off, and occupy Abbi, cause even if Abbi isn't appreciative of it, they're not stepping away from them.
Then Abbi doesn't understand them, and perhaps their feelings, and so they become more aggressive and motivated to protect Abbi.
I think the glitter bomb is kinda the turning point in this story, glitter is representative of the fan's efforts but moreso as a poison even, a harmful agent. The glitter bomb is some drastic action that figuratively explodes in Abbi's face and wakes her up to what's been happening, and she's realizing the toxicity of the fan's actions throughout the past, recognizing the behavior over and over on a loop.
So the fan doubles down and tries even harder to salvage their efforts, lamenting how Abbi doesn't understand what they want for her.
The songbird is an interesting part. I think it's more likely it's supposed to represent Abbi, but without context outside of the song, it seems to represent the fan much more. The fan is the one putting on a show, a spectacle, a song and tune, for Abbi, which would be consistent with her not understanding Abbi. And the fan is scared not because no one is planning to save Abbi, partly because Abbi might just be okay, not great perhaps but not depressive, but she's scared because Abbi is starting to wake up and kind of stray away from her.
So if the glitter is part of the fan's smoke and mirrors, it only works when it isn't consciously noticed. Magic shows aren't very effective if you notice all the tricks working. So the fan scrubs and scrubs to clean away the traces of their mistake, the glitter bomb, and regain their shining reputation. But Abbi's been awakened to their actions, the glitter lodges itself in her mind and through self introspection, or reflection, she starts realizing how much of her life is touched by the fan's action. Just for simplicity and theme of the final part, I'm gonna say the glitter is poisonous and even toxic. So Abbi rebels against the fan, essentially being unable to live with the poison surrounding her.
And so first the glitter is on her hands, so she "removes" them, physically withdrawing from the fan. Then it's in her mouth, so she removes her tongue, generally how to silence someone as Abbi verbally withdraws from the fan, or maybe even speaks up against some things they do. Then the glitter is in her eyes and she starts seeing the fan in a bad light, it's a changing of perspective and opinion. And finally, the glitter is in her heart, which is a poisoning of her feelings and emotions about the fan, and so she discards that, essentially cutting the fan away from her.
And so when the fan is trying to save her, rather than it being saving her from depression or whatever, it's saving her relationship with them and vice versa.
I think it fits the bill if the parasocial themes were a bit stronger than some of the other interpretations.
Overall though, fantastic song, no matter how off mark I am, I hope it doesn't detract from how good you feel about this song. Fantastic work. Down to try and further break down any singular line or part too if anyone was curious enough to ask. :3

As someone with a suicidal (ONLINE) friend, i relate to this song. I feel hopeless and just try making jokes and being there for him because i know i can't do anything and i don't want to make things worse. Luckily my friend is taking his anti-depressants now after bugging him about it, and he felt much better and seems not as depressed. Alot of good things are going for him and he's excited for the future (sometimes). They stopped SH but i still worry, i know they won't do it but i overthink a lot. I also am walking on eggshells trying to not make it so I'm forced to stop being friends with him because i know he'll be even more depressed...and uh- yeah-
this was kind of a vent but just saying how i relate to this song!!! its rlly epic :3
    Edit:
I dont think Abbi is the person with the buns, i think its a social media influencer she sees or knows, this is because "Abbi doesnt understand" is sung by the girl with the buns, meaning its someone else. This is her critisizing anyone that misunderstands depression because she doesnt want her depressed/suicidal friend seeing the misrepresentation and feeling more misunderstood and useless. Thats at least my interpretation and honestly its relatable🧍‍♂️

*deep sigh in hyper analyisis mode*
I think the absolute hatred for glitter comes from the probable costumes and aesthetics of Insanity Pop. It is a very sparkly feeling song with sparkly visuals. But now every time Abbi sees glitter or sparkles or anything hyper feminine she breaks down due to that being the aesthetics of her last song before her downfall. The muting of the tv is probably due to songs that might be hers in the movies or things that have similar lines to lyrics from her songs cause I cant hear the line seize the day without thinking of newsies so that's prob how abbi feels and my keyboard is breaking under my fingers send help. I will continue this later.

Besides the rabbit ears and, at the start, the buns, the character struggling with their mental health kinda looks like the one from the last two songs, only lacking the colour, making me think that the buns, a characteristic of Abbi's design, were part of her attempt to become "who she thought Abbi was", as she declared she would in Abbi. This, combined with her prior struggles with mental health seen in Live Footage, likely put far too much pressure on her and only worsened her existing struggles (hence why she only has the buns in the very first shot, losing them soon after), with the remark about Abbi's lack of understanding partaining to Abbi's impact on her mental health as she keeps obsessing over and pursuing this one thing that keeps hurting her despite all the other things she avoids and has her friend avoid, in a sense taking on even more of Abbi's qualities by shutting out so much of the outside world like Abbi shuts out all negative criticism. It might also be Abbi who sends the glitter bomb, since if this is the same character pursuing a music career, it's possible someone with Abbi's attitude would do something like that as some kind of "revenge" against a "hater", which would also explain what she's responding to when we see her second tweet, in turn furthering her impact on their mental health and leading to their ultimate desperation to avoid these sensory issues.
If anything here could be worded better to better respect those with mental health struggles, please let me know.
