I always wondered why Ric Flair was my favourite wrestler. I think I know now, why he surpassed people like Hogan. He was willing to appear an utter coward, to get the young lads over. There’s something oddly selfless and self-ironic about Flair - he enjoys being a heel, and does so at his own expense. It takes great character to be a theatrical villain.

He was the quintessential heel. Wore robes, showed of his looks and wealth, drawing heat, so that you wanted to see him lose. And unlike Hogan here, he was comfortable enough with losing. Knowing that his character was popular, not just the fact that his character had the belt.
It’s also just smart business. If you put people over and help them graduate to the big leagues, then there’s more people in said league. Meaning more potential storylines to keep the public interested in seeing. Granted, he was older here, but compare his trajectory here vs. Hogan’s. Hogan has Sting as a foil. That’s it. And they’ve been milking it for over a year now. Imagine if there were three, legit contenders. All the potential rivalries and team-ups that could’ve resulted.

The card was good but here's my version of Souled out 1998:
    1. 8 man lucha tag match, same participants.
    2. Raven vs. Chris Benoit. No changes here, though Steve McMichael should have joined Dean malenko to clean house to start the subtle tease of the horsemen getting back together.
    3. Ultimo Dragon vs. Chris Jericho for the Cruiserweight title. They swapped the titles too much, Rey being injured killed the match. Dragon was a better opponent.
    4. Rick Martel vs Booker T for TV title was good no change.
    5. Steiner brothers vs Vicious & Delicious for Tag Team titles. The 6 man was last minute and was boring. Plus they are teasing Scott's heel turn next month.
    6. Nwo( Macho man & the outsiders) vs. WCW ( Lex Luger, Giant & Larry Zybskco). The actual matches should have taken place at starrcade. Hall and Nash being tag champs but not defend here was off since the big title was vacant and the US title was not defended.
    7. Bret Hart vs. Ric flair. Would be a co-main event if the world title was defended, but regardless this should have closed the show not the actual main event.
Main Event: Sting vs. Hollywood Hogan 2 for the world heavyweight championship. The vacancy still happens but instead until waiting til superbrawl for the match do it here. It was a waste for Hogan and Sting to be in Dayton but not have a match

This show has three matches that perfectly showcases the potential of WCW: Rey/Jericho (athleticism mixed with just the right amount of character work and showmanship), Raven/Benoit (hard-hitting, no quarter asked nor given, but not deathmatch-style violent) and Hart/Flair (technical prowess with appropriate theatrics being done by legends who can still go). Also, La Parka's antics were hilarious. Something for everyone in this show; even the worst match wasn't terrible; it just felt more like a good TV match.

I definitely never forgot the moment the Giant destroyed the ring for the fact that Hall was hilariously stumbled around the ring. I'll always remember that moment.

Some of the stuff I’ve seen the giant do strength wise is amazing. Catching huge Nash as he is falling is crazy strong. Way more amazing than anything Andre did.

I feel like that Benoit's Career in Wcw during this time was Held back by Politics, cliques and bookers and the management , he didn't win any titles until 1999 but in January 2000 he along with Guerrero, Malenko and Saturn detected to WWF during the height of the Attitude era.

Too many established big stars ahead of him. It would have been difficult to break through even without the kliq's chokehold.

This was one of Wcws best ever ppvs imo, def one of the best of the nwo era, id argue the only ppv wcw did after this that was better was spring stampede 99, some will say spring stampede 98 aswell

I played wcw/nwo revenge as a kid, that's about as far as I knew of wcw. I got into wwe right after their transition from wwf. Watching this series, as good as the ruthless aggression era was, truly makes me wish I started earlier. What a time for wrestling fans. And it truly is a pleasure that you spend so much time and energy to bring these days back for those who watched and those like me who want to know.

I think Booker T deserves a "Booker T Armlock" caption a la Davey Boy Smith and his chinlocks. 4 armlocks in one match easily puts him in caption territory!
