Flying the COMAC C919 - China's Game Changer?

  • I just flew on China’s new airplane COMAC C919 from Shanghai to Chengdu with China Eastern Airlines.
It’s been more than 3 years since I last visited mainland China. The flight was a pleasant and modern one for me and many other aviation enthusiasts. Powered by the same CFM leap engines, the C919 shares many similarities with Airbus and Boeing. My flight took almost 3 hours, flying at 34,000 ft with a maximum speed of Mach 0.78.
During the flight, I experienced both C919 Business and Economy class seat features, the lavatory and galley. The middle seat width on C919 is half an inch wider to compensate for the shoulder room like A220. I spoke with the operating crew about their training and operation on the new C919.
At the end of the flight, I gave my verdict as a passenger on the C919. In short, the C919 needs to prove itself in commercial service that it can meet the economics and the required efficiency. Currently, there are over 500 orders by Chinese airlines and leasing companies but the future success depends on foreign certification of this airplane.

As the C919 is mainly used for domestic travel in China, its biggest competitor at the moment is not Boeing or Airbus, but China's efficient high-speed rail system.

That's why the USA keep provides engines and avionics etc. they can profit from it for decades. But if comac reached to bulid thousands of them, still a small potion of the plane market, but will be noticeable, when that happens.....then is not all about money gained, you know.

HSR system has always been a competitor with the airlines in China since 2011. However, by purchasing C919 instead of 737/320 by the Chinese carriers, C919 competes directly with the peers in the same class, instead of the HSR.

Not really, with C919. Less Boeing and Airbus will be bought. And the myth of C919 can't fly overseas are nonsense. There are 27 countries accepting CAA certification which means C919 can fly to other 27 countries

Great video! This is a big success for China I have to say, although many critical parts including engine are still depending on western companies, but one step a time, they will eventually be able to make their own engine and other components. Remember, Japan had been trying to make their own airliner but failed and gave up completely, China is now the only non-western nation making breakthrough like this, if they are able to build their own space station and go to moon and mars, I can't think of any reason that they won't be able to make their own commercial planes.

"although many critical parts including engine are still depending on western companies" China has a domestically-produced engine used on a military transport aircraft which is being tested for adaptation to the C919.
" if they are able to build their own space station and go to moon and mars, I can't think of any reason that they won't be able to make their own commercial planes." It's different skill sets for one or the other. The main problem China has had with airframe efforts going back to 1980 is that the structure (empty weight) is heavier than comparable Western designs. So less payload and therefore less profit. That's something they can improve over time, but then potential competitors keep improving as well.

And China is the only one who has the ability to build a big commercial aircraft outside US and EU (Japan as an example which is considered a really strong in manufacture industry has no ability to do so). Airbus and Boeing does not build all parts themselves - as a matter of fact the C919 has been designed with better insulations which is quieter than A320 and 737 series, how to come to a conclusion it is noisier if you haven’t even fly with it?

The leg space in economy seating looks surprisingly spacious. The galley and bathrooms being more spacious than the B737 and A320 is also surprising. How is it the same width and height as the A320 but more spacious on the inside? I normally don't like narrow-body airplanes but I think I'd be amenable to using one in the configuration that this C919 used.

    • @worldofai-games1036

It all depends on the airlines. Airlines love to pack in as many seats as possible per plane. Boeing and Airbus reduced the size of lavatories and galleries as this is considered wasteful space, something better used for airline to earn a few more dollars per flight. Plus, most domestic flights no longer have hot meals for Economy passengers.

    • @marcmcreynolds2827
      @marcmcreynolds2827 Год назад +2

It makes sense that while COMAC is in the initial promotion phase, with people forming their impressions, that seating in particular would be on the generous side. Early on when the widebodies started flying (c. 1970), there were piano bars (an actual piano) and lounge areas inside the airplane. Hard to imagine flying on say a 777 now and part way through the flight you head aft to relax in a big open space with what amounts to couches while maybe someone's playing the piano.
As was stated above, a Boeing is only cramped if that's what airlines want. Don't expect things to be any different for a notional C922 flying high-density air routes a decade from now.

    • @liam3284

C919 as a taller cabin (by 30cm). what this means is the side of the plane cut inward higher up so it doesn't affect the middle of the cabin as much where the seat are. airbus and boeing feel tighter because the wall push inward earlier.
