@@Goryus That's a pretty bad translation there... More accurate, sure, but the important part is how well the _lyrics_ translate _as lyrics_, not one-for-one meaning of each word/phrase.
@@seantheimp The fan translation is about 10 million times better than the atrociously bad funimation lyrics, in basically every possible category. E.g., they use proper/natural English, they rhyme correctly, they consistently have the right number of syllables, they actually make sense, they don't arbitrarily miss really important points, they use appropriate pirate jargon (Briny Deep, Davy Jones, etc.), and so on. The funimation lyrics are frankly an embarassment, and whoever wrote them should stop providing localization services.
@Goryus the syllable count may be the same (aside from a few syllables too many which can be easily cut out without changing any meaning), however the intonation of many of the words don't fit within the rhythm and melody of the song, so the text would still need a few adjustments to work as a song without sounding weird. Especially the word "Sake" doesn't fit in at all the way it is used. The intonation of Sake lays on the first syllable, while within the melody and all the words it's supposed to rhyme with the intonation is on the last, making it technically not really rhyme if used correctly. So you'd have to pronounce it a wrong way, based on where it is placed and would make it sound awfully wrong.
@@Goryus TEG13 has it. Rhyming correctly and using proper English are both nice, but the fan version mismatches the cadance-to-word timing and emphasis is placed on syllables that match to _notes_ that shouldn't be emphasized and visa versa. As I said, the fan version may be more accurate to meaning, but it's a worse translation overall as song lyrics. Also since when has rhyming been necessary for good lyrics? The Funi translation flows, hits the right emotional beats, and tells the same story recognizably. They had to sacrifice a lot of pure transliteration, but the best translations usually do.
No matter who sings, this melody will always make me shed a tear for a dear friend I knew who passed away. Regardless you sang my soul back together with the memories I had with him, thanks.
Same. Listening to it now, it makes perfect sense as folkish type song, but watching the show hardcore, it is so easy to get wrapped up in that world instead.
@@trentl3492 Just want to make a slight aside... 1071 episodes. That's 357 hours of content if you watched no movies and skipped no filler. It has been quite a ride for quite a long time XD
Goosebumps every time I hear this song. It actually has so many strong lyrics, especially "after all is said and done, you'll end up a skeleton, so spread your tail from dawn 'til dusk".
As a HUGE One Piece fan I squealed when I saw this. Perfect timing too, since 5th gear Luffy is about to debut in the anime. Thank you, Colm. From the bottom of my heart
Oh my god, he actually did it! I just recently finished Thriller Bark and that may be the closest a show has come to making me cry. I’ve been looking for a good English cover of this song and was really happy when the Longest Johnson did it but this is even better!
No matter what this song will always manage to make me cry and if you don’t know why you’ve never sailed beneath a shaded sky with a motley crew who love to belt out music too, this is a melody of pain and joy
I think you just explained to me why this one hits me harder. Never burst into song on the open sea, but in a bus going to competition or concert, or even changing classes in high school hearing the voices drop out as each member reaches their class, until at last there is only one. On the plus side they didn't die, most of them are still with us. Not all, though.
There is something in this song that shakes my heart. Even if it's not Japanese or English, when I listen to this song, I burst into tears. Thank you for letting me hear your wonderful singing voice.
I sing this song and have a few drinks remembering my dog Tuscany. I just laid u to rest u were my best friend for over 10 years, my first rescue. We both loved this song. This one is for u.
I can't express how happy i am that you have done a cover of this song. After all these years watching One Piece this song still brings a tear to my eye. You are a legend and have done this song an honor with your performance.
An unexpected but very welcome surprise! God, I didn't realize how much I've missed tuning in for sea shanties. Don't get me wrong, the Disney content as of late has been absolutely blowing it out of the water each time! but there's something about shanties that always feels like I'm returning home
"Somewhere in the endless sky Stormy winds are blowing by! Waves are dancing, evening comes It's time to sound the drums! Steady men may never fear! Tomorrow's skies are always clear So pound your feet and clap your hands Till sunny days returns!" ...Was the song foreshadowing the battle of Wano and Nika's awakening? 😮
Look around, theres a pretty fun (and if it was true, very much like Oda) theory that Bink’s Sake actually originated from the void century and Spoilers (?) It might be part of the One Piece. The interpreted in a way talks about the great war Joy Boy lost and how their dreams will not end as long as someone takes on their will. One Piece is not just one treasure but a combination. E.g. a piece of this, a piece of that. One Piece, as in One Piece of music.
Considering Nika and everything happening rn was meant to happen about 800 chapters ago if oda didn't just have a tonne of fun writing one piece, yeah it probably is
Beautiful rendition. Every version of this song always makes me crack a huge smile and then feel sad at the very end thinking about Brook's backstory. One Piece is such a beautiful story that brings out every emotion from me. Even with a simple sea shanty.
being a long time one piece and Colm McGuinness fan.. this hits home! Thank you so much for such an awesome rendition of a one piece classic 😆 looking forward to what lies ahead 😁
"Waves are dancing evening comes, its time to sound the Drums. But steady men they never fear, tomorrow's skies they're always clear, so pound your feet and clap your hands, the Sunny days return." Wow. I didnt realize, this line is actually a reference to Gear 5. Oda you damn genius.
I could never get into One Piece but damn this song and its context is some great writing. 'After all is said and done, we all end up as skeletons' is the perfect multilayered tie between the pirate ethos, Brook's Memento Mori aesthetic, and the actual backstory. All for a funny little Slash caricature.
So loved that you did this. I adore this song. I have watched One Piece since it first came out and was on 4Kids back when Saturday cartoons were still a thing ...... God I feel old. Thanks for making my day!
I love it so much! I have fond memories with this song - it reminds me of my friend and how it was through One Piece and this song that we became friends and we'd jam out to it while playing Risk. You've made my day Colm!
Oda: "A trio." Takahashi passes. Oda: "A duo." Toriyama passes. Oda: *Crying* "A solo..." Kishimoto: "JESUS, MAN! I'M NOT DEAD YET!" Oda: "Hm? Sorry, man... but it hurts so bad right now." Kishimoto: "Understandable. Same."
If you want to start with 'quartet' there's Kentaro Miura back in '21. Berserk's not as popular outside Japan, but it has some global cache. Brings a tear to my eye. Or it would if I had any tearducts. Or eyes. Yohohoho!
Though I’ve definitely not watched enough One Piece to hit this masterpiece of a song it’s great to see Colm deliver a full sized shanty for all of us!
Well, it would seem the McGuinness Triplets are a quintet. You can hear this crew before you see them, their jolly tune spanning across the entire sea. A song in each of their hearts. A song meant for good times and bad, though we all pray no bad times befall them.

As someone who's only somewhat recently been watching it, start to finish, skipping nothing other than skimming through the flashback episodes for the... actual new scenes, being at episode 585 as I write this, do yourself a favor and watch One Piece. I have never had a piece of media of any form truly effect me in the ways that One Piece has. It's changed my views on what it means to be friends, to be brave, to be family, the very meaning of the concept of justice, how to deal with loss, how to be happy, how to be free, how to just... be myself. And I'm only a little over halfway through it so far. One Piece has changed my very outlook on life. It may start out "slow", and some stuff might be drawn out too long, and some characters, events, etc. might be a bit... dated, at times, but I have genuinely never seen another story that had the kind of impact, and covered the insane range of topics, that One Piece has. Oda is a complete master of storytelling. And somehow, pretty much everything is connected. It's why "seeing random episodes of one piece" generally doesn't "get you into it", because... somehow, all 1071 episodes, are one, single, continuous, storyline. Characters you thought you'd never see again show up 300+ episodes later. Minor characters somehow become major parts of the storyline. Things that were talked about or mentioned or that happened super early in the series, somehow have relevance to almost everything that happens in the future. If you try to watch one piece, at the VERY least, watch through to the end of the first major arc, episode 45 if not 61. And if you're still "on the edge" at that point, know that it's 100% worth it to continue watching, the story just keeps getting better and better, and from I'd say... episode 242ish on, the story just gets incredible, and stays incredible. Sure, there's some low points here and there, but that's just true of every story. I've watched from episode 242 to episode 585 in about 2-3 weeks, and I'm still just as completely addicted to it as I've been these past 2-3 weeks. While there are shorter series that I would call overall "higher quality", and thus probably "better", absolutely nothing I've ever watched has compared with One Piece as far as genuine attachment to the characters, the world, emotional investment and just overall storytelling. The fact that the show has maintained this level of quality, this level of storytelling, for... over 1000 episodes? It's insane. I absolutely LOVE shows like Mob Psycho 100, One Punch Man, That Time I was reincarnated as a Slime, Overlord, etc. etc. - And I'd say that individually, each of them probably has overall "higher quality feeling episodes" and way faster pacing. But... their stories are only so big. Their characters are only so deep. Because they're only dozens to maybe 1-200 episodes. I've watched the pokemon anime from episode 1 right up until ash's final episode. One Piece and Pokemon have very similar total episode counts at this point. Yet... Pokemon never let anything matter. Ash was pretty much completely reset each region. Events from even just like 5 episodes ago rarely actually mattered. One Piece is like if Pokemon let things actually matter, and had an actual storyline, with actual character development, stakes that felt like they actually mattered, and a world that actually changed, and a story that was genuinely good. It's a genuine masterpiece. I would very easily call One Piece the single greatest story of the past 50 years. I honestly went into it expecting something similar to, say, Dragon Ball. But it's oh so much more. No other show will make you have genuine "feels" for a freaking hat's backstory.
@@AtomicArtumas The problem with One Piece the anime is the horrible pacing issues that begin to happen after around episode 600. At times the episodes seem to be stretching on and on. Of course, it's Toei Animation's fault and has nothing to do with Oda.
I clicked faster than Gear Second. Absolutely blew it out of the water, Colm. One of my favorite musicians covering my favorite pirate song/sea shanty, the perfect combo

I find it shocking that I've been listening to this song a lot for the past week, only to see you drop this jewel on us. You've nailed it, laddie, I can't believe how good this is.
I always listend to this cover last year back in december while i was watching the alabasta arc. This Song was just IMMACULATE but i sadly forgot to write a comment.
my wife and I were listening to this for the first time, and when we got to the end she literally screamed, freaked out, and thought people were dropping like flies like in the anime. I was concerned at first, but now I want to listen to this beautiful cover again. This time...making sure my wife knows it's just the end of the cover and not the anime that's playing lol
I think this song somehow fits perfectly a theme i noticed in some irish folk songs, perfect example would be The Irish Rover. They all start upbeat and make you smile, then they turn dark and grim while the melody still stays upbeat. In this case its the context that makes the song dark.

I admit, I've never actually heard the English lyrics of this song. I'm such a die-hard fan of the Japanese version, but if I have to listen to any dub of an anime song this cover by Colm is gonna be the one. ^^
They need to add this tune into Sea of thieves cause you just know that One piece and it are gonna have cross over, though they need to add a violin and fife to our instruments if they do
the growing number of binkusu no sake covers is leading me to believe in a huge collaboration for a grand orchestral version of aokiji's song from film z.

“Gather up the crew it’s time to ship out Binks brew, wave goodbye but don’t you cry the memories still remain”
I’ve always liked this song but I don’t think I’ve appreciated how good it still is out of the context of One Piece.
Same. Listening to it now, it makes perfect sense as folkish type song, but watching the show hardcore, it is so easy to get wrapped up in that world instead.
I have but it was hard to find a good version
I know right? Like even if you didn't know it was from one piece you'd still be like "Dang that's a good song."

I'm not 100% but isn't it tale not tail?
@jfb173jb Was just about to comment this, yeah. Tail is the appendage, tale is story
As a HUGE One Piece fan I squealed when I saw this. Perfect timing too, since 5th gear Luffy is about to debut in the anime. Thank you, Colm. From the bottom of my heart

first time i ever heard this song was in japanese on the show... brought a tear to my eye when I saw how much it meant to brook.
I'm so glad you didn't do the needlessly cruel ending of having each part drop out one by one, thank you!
Actually would've been a nice touch
@@shadow_b0itrash415It would have both been a nice touch and hard to watch, but I would have done it anyway.
Have we found the real brook for live action one piece????

An unexpected but very welcome surprise! God, I didn't realize how much I've missed tuning in for sea shanties. Don't get me wrong, the Disney content as of late has been absolutely blowing it out of the water each time! but there's something about shanties that always feels like I'm returning home

It might be part of the One Piece. The interpreted in a way talks about the great war Joy Boy lost and how their dreams will not end as long as someone takes on their will. One Piece is not just one treasure but a combination. E.g. a piece of this, a piece of that.

Wow.
In honor of our favorite skeleton, "YO HOHOHOHO!" You killed it Colm, Brook would be proud

Well, it would seem the McGuinness Triplets are a quintet. You can hear this crew before you see them, their jolly tune spanning across the entire sea. A song in each of their hearts. A song meant for good times and bad, though we all pray no bad times befall them.

Oh man be ready to cry and cheer and laugh yourself to death
Oh, One Piece is up in algorithms and now everybody spontaneously started making Bink's Sake covers
This one's best so far tho

I think this song somehow fits perfectly a theme i noticed in some irish folk songs, perfect example would be The Irish Rover. They all start upbeat and make you smile, then they turn dark and grim while the melody still stays upbeat. In this case its the context that makes the song dark.
