This tutorial was really great ....you are so right ...when learning from a tutor book you certainly don't get told that fantastic tip concerning the fingering and I can't wait now to give it a go.
My daughter has been playing clarinet for 2 years and her teacher never explained this! She has a recital tomorrow with a high register C. Thank you so much!
thanks so much, im in symphonic band this year and its really hard to learn new things online and I could even see how to play the notes! this helped a ton!
Wow. This has just helped me so much. Thanks Stephanie. I was really struggling getting from A to B and had no idea about that tip of keeping the fingers on the bottom hand down. That's a real game-changer. Really, really grateful. Whoop whoop. xx
I am a 4th year Clarinet player in High School, and whenever I try to go from A to B, it sounds like a seagull. How could I maintain my breath to make the note happen.
That's super normal! It will feel and sound weird for awhile. It may be time for a harder reed if you're not playing on a 3 or above. Do the low E-register key exercise for awhile. It took me a long time (years) before it finally started the way I wanted it to sound. But I didn't practice much when I was in high school, so your sound will probably develop faster if you focus on it just a little bit every day. Keep working on it and it will come!
It's at this moment i played clarinet for 3 years, stopped playing for a month and forgot everything i knew about clarinets. POV: Now you got 7 missing assignments in band.
I (freshman) am the rookie woodwind captain at my school and I have been playing clarinet for 5 years. I am trying to teach a 7th grader how to go over the break, but I dont remember how I learned. As of now, the 7th grader really struggles in that lower register, so do you have any suggestions on how to help them play and make good sound in that lower register?
Something is causing me to struggle greatly with B. I can play from low E to mid-clef Bb, then from mid clef C to D above the clef. But I can't play B on the break. Playing chromatically down or up to it doesn't work for me. The only time I can get the note to sound is when I attack B at the start of a run
Hi this is my first year using a clarinet I’ve mastered a lot but I’m having trouble with my B note I’ve looked at my fingerings in the mirror and when I practice in class everything’s fine just when I blow to it nothing comes out some screeching and a bit of noice comes but never something that sound like a B do you think this has something to do with my how much air I’m using ? I feel like I might need a different reed maybe I’m using a 3 I really need some help with learning B I ’ve tried everything I know!
Hi, thank you for the tutorial. But when ever i try to play it not sound comes out it sometimes squeaks even tho my mouth is not all the way in my clarinet works perfectly fine its just a matter of trying to get to sound right
Well this year I couldn't go to band and I want to play claranate but my parents need to pay rent and they said they will buy me my own claranate very soon
@@biancag1838 Yay! That would be awesome! Also we just had several hundred new instruments come in, so if you join next year you could definitely get a school instrument.
I'm just getting into it now. Elsewhere I heard that you can roughly approximate a stiffer reed by pulling the reed out about 1mm past alignment with the end of the mouthpiece. If you can still play below the break comfortably after adapting for a few minutes, and above the break comes easier than before, then you might be ready to go up half a reed stiffness.

This is very clear. I'm going to play this for my 6th graders tomorrow!

@@StephanieDouglassMusic Do you need a larger reed? I've only got a 1.5 right now, but I'm getting a 2 or 2.5 soon
This was SO helpful. Thanks!

What notes are you playing
Mostly B-flat and B.
Thank you. I found the video very helpfull :3
Do you know, if the higher notes in the lower register tend to be sharp on an Oeler clarinet, as well?
I'm not sure! I've only had experience with the system I play on.

It takes time! Sometimes it's fingers, too. Making sure you're able to place them quickly is a big part of it. Keep working at it!
Are you at Taylor I really
Yes, this is my classroom at Taylor. Are you still playing clarinet? You should try this too!
