In June 2024 we visited Guangzhou ->Shanghai->Beijing -> >Chongqing. There is a sense of safety in every street, corners which makes roaming/discovery more enjoyable. Most areas are clean, and most people seem genuinely happy. The infrastructure; subway stations are like walking into a spaceship. China is simply amazing! My teenage son is already anxious to go back.

It's a tradeoff. You feel safe because there's surveillance everywhere. If one commits a crime, it's most likely that one will get caught. The question is: do you want to sacrifice privacy in exchange for safety? The answer to that question will determine whether you like to live in China or western countries.

I visited Lanzhou in Sept 2024, and walked over the first iron bridge over the Yellow River built by Americans in 1908. China was so poor then, it couldnt build that bridge. Yet today 115 years later China has its own Space Station, GPS, 30000km of High Speed rail, and lifted 800mio of its citizens out of poverty. China deserve a Nobel Prize. Imagine what China will achieve in next 20-30 years. God Bless China.

I read the book some months ago and it is excellent to understand China. In spite of the challenges, as European, China is the country now that attracts me more. What they have done in a few years, despite the weaknesses the professor said, is phenomenal. There are a lot of things that were not in the book and also not said here today, but that will have, I imagine, good consequences for China. BRICS, the dedolarization, and a multipolar world will benefit China, I presume. The engineering capacity in big projects all over the world, has proven excellent. High-speed railways, is one sector with good perspectives in Global South. The "old" Road and Belt Initiative is increasing in countries that begin to look to alternatives to Western Countries intrusive approaches

There are plenty of intelligent and sophisticated Westerners around, however, when it comes to China, they revert to being mindless and fear driven--all out of their own inability to be objective and going beyond their own racist prejudices. If you haven’t already, you should go to China and see more with your own eyes, if it is a place you take more interest in.
China is not controlled by the top 1% rich guys, so most Chinese can survive even in a bad economy situation. Because, the government ensures most necessities are affordable and they are not controlled by the 1% so that it’s within reach for lower income family group. Such as, food, medical, public transportation, education, energy and so on. Even housing sector contributes large percentage of GDP growth rate, the Chinese government prefers to ensure housing is affordable to all in the coming years rather than a nice short-term GDP figure. This is China, no major homelessness, gun violence, shoplifting, robbery, and so on.
You are right, China is not controlled by the top 1% rich guys, because it is indeed controlled by the top 0.01% ultra- rich party leaders. Their ultimate goal is to maintain power and control, if ordinary people are willing to give that, both can maintain a happy balance, as we can see in the past 30 years. Should this balance be maintained or disturbed, it should be up to the Chinese people.

This is only the second time I've come across Professor Jin - I very much enjoyed this lecture, and I ran out to buy her book. I divide my time 50/50 between the business elite of the West and China... and weirdly, there's almost NOTHING I read in the English media that matches the China that I see. Her analysis is insightful and accurate, matches with the China that I see.
She's a star, measured, informed, no alarmist click baitery, a well presented talk and yet another Chinese person that is so exquisitely explained, makes such a welcome change the show boating we see from so many Western experts.
She understands both worlds. Most Western writers about China cant even understand Chinese. It's like me a Chinese writing a book about USA without understanding English. You are bound to get a lot wrong.

The major difference US vs China is the US has only one hundred + years of real history from their setup as a separate country, and their trajectory during that period was all the way up to top. They don't have experience of being down. That's why they are so paranoid of being overtaken by anyone like Russia, Japan, EU, and now China, and gone mad to bully everyone thinking this is a survival game for them to stay top. China has multiple times of downfalls being broken into pieces, ruled by hostile foreign countries, picked ourselves up and be strong again. In our minds, we fully understand we won't be top forever, and won't be bottom forever. I watched many other economists, and they reported on China resolving many of these issues already. Building infrastructure to western China to even out the economy. Supporting unemployed youth into small businesses to balance out the big corporate companies. Growth is happening in villages, too. China is still socialism, which benefits the people.

This is a good interview. I'd say she has a massive edge in understanding the Chinese strategy and inner workings, because 1/ she is the daughter of high ranking official in the CCP and 2/ she is a bright mind who was trained in the best US school and has developped a good understanding of how both Western and Eastern perspective match up, she can be the bridge between both countries. People and especially Western leaders ought to listen to someone like her. We lost a really bright mind in PM Lee Kuan Yew and haven't really find another quite like him.

All these talks about China's economy ignore the elephant in the room: US is engaged in full spectrum containment of China. Of course, that is going to restrain their growth. If they had full access to Western markets and technology they would be booming.
It's a loss loss situation. But for China it's still a net positive while for USA it's net negative in terms of the containment alone. China comes out on top vs USA in terms of containment and global reputation and influence and trade. China is coming out on top even in USAs supposed allied countries. Just see stuff like chip ban, Huawei ban etc. USA is cannibalizing itself and sacrificing its allies for no net gain, only loss of its allies and itself. Those restrictions are also affecting the USA and the rest of the West more than China. Inflation in the West will rise faster making life much more difficult resulting in uncontrollable socioeconomic issues and chaos.

FB or YT will also never store their data in China, they refuse to adhere to local laws and regulations, so ofcourse theyre banned. The old China in Qing dynasty was too proud to learn from the West until the country was almost destroyed, then they lost all confidence in their culture even self respect, and started on a long road to learn and copy everything from the West with much sacrifice and hardworking to get to where they are today, and even find rejuvenation in the culture. From her clear explanation you can tell that she really understands the economy inside out (macro to micro). First time I gain such a clear picture of how different factors relate to each other in the economy. I guess my understanding has also improved due to being involved in a startup project.

The Chinese had an industrial period 2000 years ago. They built a construction that can be seen from space. They invented gunpowder, deep mining, silk and many other world changing technologies. China will be great again as it once was.
1000 years ago Chinese technology was exported to the west and helped the west develop. 1000 years later we see western technology being adopted and helping China develop. Ideology aside it is interesting how these human technological cycles play out.

Born in Bejing, father politically connected. It doesn't take much effort to connect the dots. Always pay attention and be aware of conflicts of interest, when you are fed information. This applies in politics, business, investments, and in our own families and friends. You will never hear Trump's sons ever say anything bad regarding their Father. The speech sounds more like a sales pitch than educational one, for me. I'd prefer to hear from somebody not so well connected, and doesn't have so many conflicts of interests.

As an American of Chinese descent, up to 10 years ago, I was as ignorant as many Westerner about state of China affairs, never mind I only speak Cantonese not the Mandarin, it still take lots of effort to dispell many myths and propaganda about China! For many internet troll type of peoples, it's just willful ignorant dismissing what they see on this platform as CCP propaganda even if it come fron Westerner in China. As I progress from Wester Vloggers, to more and more of native Chinese vloggers in their language I get better picture of new generation of Chinese mentality, while Westerners basking on China's demise stating figures like youth unemployment, I see a generation that are confident, patriotic and hopeful, give you an example they're now thanks to US policy, buying their own national brands, from clothing to smart phone to appliances, many no longer idolize Western brands like Apple or Tesla, in short period of two years EV sales in China reach 50% of all vehicle sale and many go for Chinese brands like Nio or BYD, and full of pride, someone commented they're being overconfident, nevertheless better then comparing to in this half of the world all you can hear is how price of everything is so unaffordable!May be thatwhy our government need scape goat or enemies to distract ourself from our grim reality 😢
The American born Chinese are so ignorant, but most Americans are ignorant on world affairs anyways. So they can be easily fooled. In your case, you need to watchout. The key issue the West is not happy about China is the authoritarian regime. US always try to sabotage any such regime doesn’t matter what country. And this is China’s biggest problem. Other issue such as economy or employment etc is not an issue as all democratic countries face those issues too. We must overthrow the CCP otherwise China will always be stigmatized as The Bad guy. If you look at her background, she has been educated in the West and works in the West. It therefore helps for her to promote the West’s narrative. Being born in Beijing is just happenstance. Being born to a major Chinese economist who was politically powerful is not just happenstance but gave her the ability to be educated in the US since age 14. It always helps to k ow where someone is coming from.
Let’s put it this way: lived in NYC since age 14, educated at Harvard, worked for Goldman Sachs, teaches at the LSE which produces a lot of hard rightish graduates who are among the captains of capitalism. Where does it show that she was educated in China, worked in a Chinese university and understands China from the Chinese point of view? I’m not against her - just saying that she is Chinese in name only. Her viewpoint is that from the West. That’s the way I look at her contributions which is totally different from the contributions of other economists. I could be wrong, this is just my personal view point.
Global economies need to find equilibrium within the finite supply of energy. There is a limited supply of sunlight, geothermal heat, wind, nuclear radiation and fossil fuels. The energy is shared by all life including 8 billion humans. The more we take for ourselves the less there is for our ecosystems.

@@Hanguorenshishabi I'm from the UK and went to University there. We had plenty of Chinese students in my Engineering department, and their academic level was similar to that of the Western students. On average, Chinese schooling in mathematics is better than in most Western countries at the pre-University level, but once you reach University level, there's actually not much difference.
Chinese are very hard working and their leaders are so determined to lead country from falling into the trap set up by the western powers. The whole country is resilient and united to get through the challenges ahead.

Yes, it’s a government for the people. Private companies do have issues if when push comes, the government will not bail out international investors. Dang always said, grow the economies on the coast, the center will catch up, which is what’s happening now. Those companies with influence with Provincial governments is because those governments have physically invested in them, giving them tax breaks etc. however, unlike the West, those Provincial governments sell their shares and invest them back into their provinces.
Plus, in China, decents of CCP family members form all important industries, such as railway, steel, power industries. They get break from being the inner circle, exploiting the grass roots.

This is boring, a continuous litany of platitudes on a monotone bed of nonsense. I tried to follow this to hopefully learn something new but I only got the same platitudes we always get from this type of presentations. It reminded me of my days at university having to listen to this type of presentation 30+ years ago and I have to say that not much progress has been done on this subject. I get more information on China by watching a ten minutes vlogger's video than I get from this presentation and it is much more accurate and interesting.

If someone sets up a firm that combines the properties of Alibaba and Amazon, he will take over the world instantly. Take the opportunity of shipping small quantities directly to individual customers, from Chinese producers, even including a waiting time (shipments have to be combined to reduce shipping costs) and a major logistic challenge. That would immediately outcompete the vast majority of western producers. And it would also mean getting rid of irritating intermediaries who do buy large quantities in China, and sell over Amazon or local wholesalers for 10-100 times their buying price. The only problem I see in this scenario is that the loss of jobs in the west, means that the western market might collapse soon afterward.
What you are talking about just sounds like Alibaba, since it is already attempting to combine the properties of Alibaba and Amazon. There's are actually a number of companies that are already trying to do this, like Alibaba, JD, Pinduoduo, etc, but the CCP cracked down hard on them in 2022 and 2023.

China has made amazing progress on its infrastructure and its efficiency in these projects- takes us a year to build a bus shelter in Ireland and they build a mega airport in a year!

In June 2024 we visited Guangzhou ->Shanghai->Beijing -> >Chongqing. There is a sense of safety in every street, corners which makes roaming/discovery more enjoyable. Most areas are clean, and most people seem genuinely happy. The infrastructure; subway stations are like walking into a spaceship. China is simply amazing! My teenage son is already anxious to go back.

I visited Lanzhou in Sept 2024, and walked over the first iron bridge over the Yellow River built by Americans in 1908. China was so poor then, it couldnt build that bridge. Yet today 115 years later China has its own Space Station, GPS, 30000km of High Speed rail, and lifted 800mio of its citizens out of poverty. China deserve a Nobel Prize. Imagine what China will achieve in next 20-30 years. God Bless China.

I read the book some months ago and it is excellent to understand China. In spite of the challenges, as European, China is the country now that attracts me more. What they have done in a few years, despite the weaknesses the professor said, is phenomenal. There are a lot of things that were not in the book and also not said here today, but that will have, I imagine, good consequences for China. BRICS, the dedolarization, and a multipolar world will benefit China, I presume. The engineering capacity in big projects all over the world, has proven excellent. High-speed railways, is one sector with good perspectives in Global South. The "old" Road and Belt Initiative is increasing in countries that begin to look to alternatives to Western Countries intrusive approaches

China is not controlled by the top 1% rich guys, so most Chinese can survive even in a bad economy situation. Because, the government ensures most necessities are affordable and they are not controlled by the 1% so that it’s within reach for lower income family group. Such as, food, medical, public transportation, education, energy and so on. Even housing sector contributes large percentage of GDP growth rate, the Chinese government prefers to ensure housing is affordable to all in the coming years rather than a nice short-term GDP figure. This is China, no major homelessness, gun violence, shoplifting, robbery, and so on.
You are right, China is not controlled by the top 1% rich guys, because it is indeed controlled by the top 0.01% ultra- rich party leaders. Their ultimate goal is to maintain power and control, if ordinary people are willing to give that, both can maintain a happy balance, as we can see in the past 30 years. These are such ignorant comments. I have been living in the US for over 40 years. 90% of the people living in the US have a much better standard of living than people living in China.
This is only the second time I've come across Professor Jin - I very much enjoyed this lecture, and I ran out to buy her book. I divide my time 50/50 between the business elite of the West and China... and weirdly, there's almost NOTHING I read in the English media that matches the China that I see. Her analysis is insightful and accurate, matches with the China that I see.
She's a star, measured, informed, no alarmist click baitery, a well presented talk and yet another Chinese person that is so exquisitely explained, makes such a welcome change the show boating we see from so many Western experts.
She understands both worlds. Most Western writers about China cant even understand Chinese. It's like me a Chinese writing a book about USA without understanding English. You are bound to get a lot wrong.

I'd say she has a massive edge in understanding the Chinese strategy and inner workings, because 1/ she is the daughter of high ranking official in the CCP and 2/ she is a bright mind who was trained in the best US school and has developped a good understanding of how both Western and Eastern perspective match up, she can be the bridge between both countries. All these talks about China's economy ignore the elephant in the room: US is engaged in full spectrum containment of China. Of course, that is going to restrain their growth. If they had full access to Western markets and technology they would be booming.
It's a loss loss situation. But for China it's still a net positive while for USA it's net negative in terms of the containment alone. China comes out on top vs USA in terms of containment and global reputation and influence and trade.

As an American of Chinese descent, up to 10 years ago, I was as ignorant as many Westerner about state of China affairs, never mind I only speak Cantonese not the Mandarin, it still take lots of effort to dispell many myths and propaganda about China!

As I progress from Wester Vloggers, to more and more of native Chinese vloggers in their language I get better picture of new generation of Chinese mentality, while Westerners basking on China's demise stating figures like youth unemployment, I see a generation that are confident, patriotic and hopeful, give you an example they're now thanks to US policy, buying their own national brands, from clothing to smart phone to appliances, many no longer idolize Western brands like Apple or Tesla, in short period of two years EV sales in China reach 50% of all vehicle sale and many go for Chinese brands like Nio or BYD, and full of pride, someone commented they're being overconfident, nevertheless better then comparing to in this half of the world all you can hear is how price of everything is so unaffordable!May be thatwhy our government need scape goat or enemies to distract ourself from our grim reality 😢
The American born Chinese are so ignorant, but most Americans are ignorant on world affairs anyways. So they can be easily fooled. In your case, you need to watchout. The key issue the West is not happy about China is the authoritarian regime. US always try to sabotage any such regime doesn’t matter what country.
And this is China’s biggest problem. Other issue such as economy or employment etc is not an issue as all democratic countries face those issues too.

If you look at her background, she has been educated in the West and works in the West. It therefore helps for her to promote the West’s narrative. Being born in Beijing is just happenstance. Being born to a major Chinese economist who was politically powerful is not just happenstance but gave her the ability to be educated in the US since age 14. Let’s put it this way: lived in NYC since age 14, educated at Harvard, worked for Goldman Sachs, teaches at the LSE which produces a lot of hard rightish graduates who are among the captains of capitalism. Where does it show that she was educated in China, worked in a Chinese university and understands China from the Chinese point of view? I’m not against her - just saying that she is Chinese in name only. Her viewpoint is that from the West. That’s the way I look at her contributions which is totally different from the contributions of other economists. I could be wrong, this is just my personal view point.
Global economies need to find equilibrium within the finite supply of energy. There is a limited supply of sunlight, geothermal heat, wind, nuclear radiation and fossil fuels. The energy is shared by all life including 8 billion humans. The more we take for ourselves the less there is for our ecosystems.

@@Hanguorenshishabi I'm from the UK and went to University there. We had plenty of Chinese students in my Engineering department, and their academic level was similar to that of the Western students. On average, Chinese schooling in mathematics is better than in most Western countries at the pre-University level, but once you reach University level, there's actually not much difference.
Chinese are very hard working and their leaders are so determined to lead country from falling into the trap set up by the western powers. The whole country is resilient and united to get through the challenges ahead.

Too many 'governments' have use ideologies, propaganda and security treats to 'rob' their Citizens, to the benefit of a few, for much too long. Have they gone overboard??? Yes, it’s a government for the people. Private companies do have issues if when push comes, the government will not bail out international investors. Dang always said, grow the economies on the coast, the center will catch up, which is what’s happening now. Those companies with influence with Provincial governments is because those governments have physically invested in them, giving them tax breaks etc. however, unlike the West, those Provincial governments sell their shares and invest them back into their provinces.
Plus, in China, decents of CCP family members form all important industries, such as railway, steel, power industries. They get break from being the inner circle, exploiting the grass roots.
Dr Jin is a very wise academic who knows China with all its benefits and faults very well. Where will China veer towards one the next 5-10yrs depends on President Xi Jinping and the CCP?

I tried to follow this to hopefully learn something new but I only got the same platitudes we always get from this type of presentations. It reminded me of my days at university having to listen to this type of presentation 30+ years ago and I have to say that not much progress has been done on this subject. I get more information on China by watching a ten minutes vlogger's video than I get from this presentation and it is much more accurate and interesting.
The underlying assumption Keyju Jin propafgates is that the western system is the best and should be emulated, and there is no mention in her words of the corruption in the western politics and the errosion of the level of inovation, etc. And to talk about emulating the financial components of western political economy as a potential good?! this is insane! If someone sets up a firm that combines the properties of Alibaba and Amazon, he will take over the world instantly. Take the opportunity of shipping small quantities directly to individual customers, from Chinese producers, even including a waiting time (shipments have to be combined to reduce shipping costs) and a major logistic challenge. That would immediately outcompete the vast majority of western producers. And it would also mean getting rid of irritating intermediaries who do buy large quantities in China, and sell over Amazon or local wholesalers for 10-100 times their buying price. The only problem I see in this scenario is that the loss of jobs in the west, means that the western market might collapse soon afterward.
What you are talking about just sounds like Alibaba, since it is already attempting to combine the properties of Alibaba and Amazon. There's are actually a number of companies that are already trying to do this, like Alibaba, JD, Pinduoduo, etc, but the CCP cracked down hard on them in 2022 and 2023.
