It was awesome talking with you guys about the project. I’m happy to see more people are showing interest in the 3rd gen platform. I can’t wait to see it complete!
Oh I bought a new 87 Iroc convertible 5spd 4whl disc anniversary edition. Had the 305 in it but still had a blast with it. Got stolen three times on me. Did a full black repaint at a Ferrari repair shop. Threw a momo steering wheel as well as momo wheels. Car was just an absolute blast !
This is shaping up to be a really cool build series. As a guy who had one in high school in '90-'91, I can tell you, the cool factor was off the charts. We had a group of about five of us who hung out and drove Camaro's and 'Birds and thought we were pretty cool with our 200 horsepower V8 "muscle cars". Haha.
I had the same thought. It was by far the best mod I ever made to my '91. It made the car usable, reduced the noise from the t-tops, etc. It was like a different car.
I'm loving this. I had an 85 Z/28 but really wanted the IROC just couldn't afford it at the time. I would love to have an IROC now and do what you're doing.
so cool that you guys are doing a 3rd gen. I too was in High School when they came out and they were decent performers for what we had back then. I have always said that with some smart modifications/upgrades they can be really great performers. Looking forward to the finished product.
I’m looking forward to seeing more episodes! I have owned one for 19 years and I never thought I’d see the day that they would be desirable but it’s finally here.
Two-time 3rd generation owner here with one 4th-gen ('84 Z28 L69 with a 5-speed, and an '89 Trans Am GTA L98 sadly only an auto available). Both cars were sub-7 second 0-60 even in stock form which was great for that era. However, I always wanted more out of that GTA. By the time I could afford to seriously modify it with a blower and internals and bolt-ons, 1993 came around with the 4th-gen LT1 F-bodies, and I dropped an order in for a 1993 Firebird Formula 6-speed. Now that car responded to simple bolt-ons like nobody's business. A basic intake, computer chip, and exhaust mod shot that thing up to 300hp or so from a reported 275hp from the factory (same thing SLP did for the Firehawks and SS Camaro for a LOT more money). The easy hp estimate benchmark was going from a 14.0s @ 100mph 1/4 mile stock to a 13.8s @ 103mph after those mods on the same track in similar tire and air temp conditions. But I will say one thing: stock for stock on suspension, both of my 3rd gens cornered better than that 4-gen. The GTA had the WS6 suspension, which was similar to the IROC's suspension if I remember correctly. I still dream about that GTA *and* Z28 which I surmise I'm not alone on as I've been watching the soaring prices of the 3rd gens now! Great video guys!
That's how it was over in the Ford camp, post 1987. GT40 parts over the dealer counter and installed would get near 300hp, but if you got the lightweight coupe...that was enough to get what was really good performance back then (old musclecars rocking over 10:1 CR needed high octane fuel not really availible at the pump unless you mixed Sunoco 94 octane with booster or went to the airport for some AvGas, so what you saw often was 396s versus L88's, etc). Unfortunately, GM gave those LT1/LS1 engines a weak rear axle if you tried slicks--it almost was like 1961, when Chevy used the axle from 1955 designed for 283 hp or less in their new 409 models and they snapped often at the strip.
Where I was living in the late 80s and early 90s, the biggest thing all Iroc owners did,,,,, pull out the timing gears and chain and put a noisy gear drive in it. That was pretty much the extent of it. And it was only done to give it that blower whine. But once they did that they all claimed the cars were so much faster. I'm not kidding. We all used to make so much fun of those guys. And the fox body cars too. We would go to the local track on the weekend and it was just a sea of those cars. One after another. The all ran approximately the same time. The only difference was the paint colour. But it was all in good fun.
2 things man, #1 that iroc rehab shirt is bitchin so we’re gonna need you to release some 🤘🏽! #2 these episodes need to be longer man they’re my favorite thing to watch and it keeps me even more motivated to find and fix the problem on my 3rd gen camaro. What engine ? Fuel injection obviously. Has there been any mechanical modifications done to the engine, or is it just bone stock ? Let me know. I've worked on a pile of these cars. Mainly when they were somewhat new.
@@Mike-qp8bv its 3.1L but the stalling happens when i come to a stop, the engine is bone stock didn’t bother to do anything to it since i plan on buying and building a 350. Let know if you have any clue man id highly appreciate it!
If it has an automatic transmission it could be as simple as the torque converter clutch not releasing. Testing procedures and schematics are a google search away bu if you can get a Haynes manual it's worth every penny.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the cost of those Edelbrock motors and American Powertrain transmissions. Longing for this type of content, but more focus on budget friendly builds. Too many of these types of video series scenarios start with a great platform, then drop upwards of $28K like it's a drop in the bucket.
It's never a drop in the bucket. The crate engine was a great alternative to rebuilding the original engine and then trying to get the same amount of power. This is a guide, not a must-do - bear in mind you can do as many, or as few mods as you'd like.
@@hemmingsmotornews Naturally, but when you watch these videos and the folks say, "We got this fully built and dressed long-block from blank company, and this transmission from that company... the average Joe just can't swing that kind of money. I love the car but it kills me to see you get rid of the tpi. I know it's not up to modern standards but it was the soul of the iroc package. It will still be awesome when its done
Lots of GM cars went together that way on the marriage line. First Gen compacts (Pontiac Tempest, Olds F85, Buick Special - even the Corvair, sort of) plus the First and Second Gen Fs and Xs.
Maybe I'm alone on this one, first I am big car guy and always been a fan of Hemmings. Great publication and great online site that is truly valuable for the collector car marketplace. Their video content goes beyond well done, and I'm a huge fan of the Iroc Camaro, have owned a black L98 no t-top since new. All that said, I also like this host along with others, however...Do people think it's cool to take the Lord's name in vain? Simply dont understand, obviously lacking a relationship with the Lord. I'm not the language police, and I'm sure many dont care, but please let us all take a moment to consider what we say. If none of this bothers you, hope you will take some time and seek the Lord. Besides all that, take your t-tops out and have a great day cruising your Irocs or whatever your ride may be, have a great day.
Short, but sweet! In all my years watching all the different car shows, one one little complaint is never knowing what kinda prices where talking about! Would it be so bad letting us average Joe's know? Engine/trans...boom. Suspension..boom. Exhaust..boom. Comes a point where you'll spend more than she's worth. A thought. Thanks Hemmings.
great to see Musto back in action what drives me crazy is the low views on youtube .. this guy has a huge following ... the youtube algorithm sucks ....
Carfax only reveals accidents reported to insurance, so it's not uncommon to find a repair attempted out of pocket to avoid being dropped or having the monthly payment rise. Dumping the drivetrain the Mopar way means you can use the subframe later as an engine test stand before bolting it all back in to find a leaky rear main seal or tune the TPI and reach every sensor easier than working around strut towers.
