    Robinhood has stopped the buying of a particular stock, but not the selling. This is what market manipulation actually looks like.

      Who buys a stock that can be bought? It looks like Robinhood has temporarily monopolized the purchase of certain stocks on their app they have labeled volatile.

      @Wes That's an interesting angle and I'm sure there's some truth to it, but the genie is out of the bottle now. If Robinhood falters, and I think they will because trust is irreparably broken, another platform will pick up the pieces of where they left off unless there are 'regulators' who introduce legislation to prevent it. But again, it would be so transparent that I'm not sure it would fly.

    • @stephenpettyjohn8624
      @stephenpettyjohn8624 3 года назад +4

      @@doc-holliday- They're likely to get sued for 3-400M for the move. They've raised 2.2B (of which a moderate chunk came from citadel (likely 50-100M, can only see the size of the round and participants not how much was put in by each investor). Hate to say it but even with a successful class action it won't deplete their capital and citadel will lead another funding round if needed.
      (disclaimer, the rest of this is educated guesses on Robinhood's revenue): Let's say for instance Robinhood has 10B in liquidity on their platform, and on average they execute trades worth the entire 10B every month. Their revenue from market liquidity making likely generates somewhere between 0.1-0.5% a trade. Using the higher estimate means they're pulling 50M per month in revenue (this is likely a wild overestimation but for arguments sake, i'll stick to it). Add in another 10M a month selling the liquidity data. Assuming a 6%/month user growth, they were 2 years away from their revenue catching up to their current seed funding. Somewhere between 30-40% of their assets will be pulled after this most likely. This means it'll take them another year, maybe a year and a half to be profitable.
      The changing timetable on profitability or having to raise more funding to market more, handle regulatory trouble or pay off lawsuits will significantly devalue their company. But it's not going to kill it, the concept/business model is too strong and they've built the platform already... but they did do a lot of damage to their business.

      1) Protect Major hedgefunds who are losing money on their shorting schemes to control the market
      2) Protect his own ass from Class action lawsuits when regular joe lose there savings trying to strike it rich (inevitably they will say the market volaltility was fraudulant and he should have known better)
      The problem is when the Hedgefunds lose the government will bail them out with tax payer money as has been proven 4 times over in the last decade. When the little guy loses their only recourse is to sue Vlad. And that is the rub by curtailing the little guys trading capability he is:
      1) maintaining the integrity of a broken system
      2) protecting the most powerful members of society
      3) protecting his own ass
      4) protecting small investors by removing the ability for great gains and volatile loses
      funny thing is i imagine by the end of this he is likely going to go to jail and all the blame placed on him while the hedgefund managers get to sneak out the back door unscathed and with new "protections" on the market to make sure the little guy can never do this again.

    • @EfftupSmith

      Financial requirements refers to the requirement to have the cash onhand to cover a shortfall if there is a default in the trading of shares by an investor. If you use a clearing house, then you have to give money to the clearing house to cover any shortfall if a trade does not settle. Robin hood does their own clearing which means they need to have all the cash on hand to cover any shortfall, so it looks like they had to halt trading of these stocks cos they didn;t have the cash/Govt bonds to cover any more trades of these volatile stocks. If this IS what was going on, then he did a really piss poor job of explaining that, and he sounded dodgy as hell. I amn assuming he didn't want to say "We are a small comapny and don;t have the cash to cover such an unprecedent amount of trading in one type of stock"

    • @mikhailhunter5277
      @mikhailhunter5277 3 года назад

      @@arcguardian Ok so what numb nuts here is saying is that the clearing firm changed up the requirements on him suddenly and told him he needs to put up a 100% collateral.... He doesn't have that money.. When you execute trades it takes 2 days for funds to settle. And usually there is a small collateral but he's been told he has to cover 100% of billions of dollars for the transaction. In plain and simple terms he doesn't have the money to cover the transactions until settlement. He's just taking a roundabout way of saying it. And then the Hedge funds would have just filed for bankruptcy and not even reimburse the funds back to RH. Leaving Robinhood the platform to PAY for every trader. But most likely what would have happened is all those accounts on reddit showing the millions of dollars in equity would have had big fat ZEROs $0.00000 when they sold and the transaction settles.
      Vlad aka numb nuts thought it better to shut off the buy button so people could sell and deflate the price and prevent buying. Which btw it turns out, when you buy a stock, they actually FRONT the money for you (because your funds don't go over immediately) AND THEY DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FRONT, and once again their clearing firm is requiring 100% collateral. In other terms if you executed a buy they wouldn't be able to do it literally.... Because they can't meet the financial requirements of the clearing firm so they shutdown buying for the mass amount of retail investors, so the stock could deflate a little, decreasing volatility, therefore allow hedge funds to buy and sell allowing RH to recoup funds so that retailer investors can buy again..Honestly i think he made the decision to short us on some profit instead of shorting us a 100% of everything

      The main reason why you could sell, but not buy, is that Robinhood would have had to put up 100% of the value of the BUY paid to the clearing house. If your selling, they don't need to. The bottom line was they could not afford to front the cash for the BUY orders. The 100% was required by the clearing houses as GameStop was deemed very high risk, but a typical stock buy is under 5% cash advance required. With the 100% applying to the GameStop shares, Robinhood suspended the trading of that stock so they could still conduct business with the BUY orders that they only needed to submit under 5% cash up front for. At the end of the day, what he didn't want to say, and was avoiding was they didn't have the money to support the BUY orders. No one had to ask them stop BUYs, because they were close to running out of cash, and would have been insolvent - and that would have (and mays till) breach the public trust.

    instead of paying up and covering their shorts they restricted buying of the stocks. They will do anything to make sure a squeeze isn't triggered. The fight is still going on because they've yet to cover their positions.
