The problem with that is clearance and settlements. I read somewhere, can't remember where, but it was said that trades totalling 150% of the total number of shares in gamestop were made.
When those trades try to settle in the clearing house, there are not enough shares to actually settle all the trades. The result of that is the margins charged to the platforms goes through the roof.
That is why the platforms are only allowing sales and not buys of these companies right now.

      @@petert3355 You can't spin this.
Allowing retail investors to sell and not buy does not solve the clearance problem. Someone still has to buy those stocks. What it does solve is reducing the market price for the stock, which is exactly what short position hedge funds want.
If this were the other way around - if it were retail investors with the short positions - and hedge funds bought several stocks, the brokerage and the clearing system would have allowed hedge funds to do it.
RobinHood is not impartial. They have a vested interest in hedge funds winning, because RobinHood receives a lot of revenue from a hedge fund involved in this.
Furthermore, a hedge fund lost money because of the short squeeze, and then received a cash injection from two 'rival' hedge funds. Imagine that? That would be like Target getting help from Walmart and Costco.
What we are witnessing is misinformation, manipulation and collusion. Follow the money. The numbers *never* lie.

The argument for collusion is that not in picking and not in the advice, but the “banding together” to “stay strong”. I don’t think this argument is morally right. I don’t think it’s the way the law should be interpreted. But it’s how an SEC lawyer might approach it. It’s a sufficient argument for a judge to let a lawsuit proceed. If you and your 1000 co-investors from your financial discord server get swept up, and you see what your legal fees are going to be, you’ll want to settle as quickly as possible.
But maybe a crusading lawyer would take the case pro bono or at a reduced rate for the group . Who knows? I could see a young Mark Geragos jumping into something like this. Maybe even the real Mark Geragos.

To be the advocate of the devil - there are a lot of rules applying to hedge funds which weren't followed on these reddit groups. For one example when a hedge fund buys significant percent of a stock - they have to disclose how much they bought and get approval. If you want to treat reddit as a hedge fund - they would be sued and convicted for not following the rules.
The redditors are on the right side of morality but the system is designed against them.

The only cases where RH sold users shares that I'm aware of were margin calls. If you're gambling with someone else's money, they should have a chance to veto your bet if it causes them to risk being unable to recover their stake. If you were forced to sell in a margin call, you were required to consent to it when you signed the documents to create your margin account.
Doing that right as you make it impossible to buy back in with just the user's own money is what's fucked. Also, some margin accounts were safely capitalized until the price drop caused by RH's actions, which forced sales at the lowest possible price. In my view RH is responsible for losses from the halt and the price action they caused, but not margin calls themselves. Margin calls are important and margin does not function as a system without them.
If you're new to trading, seeing brokers force sales might be alarming, but every person posting that RH forced them to sell likely signed a 20 page document when they created their margin account, certifying that they understood and accepted the risks of buying on margin, where margin calls would have been fully explained to them, assuming they actually read it.
Even WSB has had posts for weeks now explaining why you shouldn't buy any of the short squeeze stocks on margin. In other words, there are people who insist on calling themselves retards who understand margin calls well enough to avoid having this problem.
TL;DR If you don't want you're broker to force you to sell your shares, don't borrow money from them.
36 shares $GME bought with my own money. RH hasn't sold any of them (although I still can't buy more because there is apparently a 5 share ownership cap -_-). Holding until the squeeze is squozen or these people are all in prison.

      @newscore4964 3 года назад

@@faitaccompli5878 totally agree, like I said "In my view RH is responsible for losses from the halt and the price action they caused". Anyone who was margin called because of that price action has a claim, but margin calls themselves are totally legitimate and there are a lot of new investors who seem perplexed as to how a brokerage could legally do something like that.
edit: new investors and non-investors* considering how large this story is at this point. A lot of people who have been investing for years don't know what a margin call is or how they work, never mind people who have never touched stocks.
It's because the users getting their shares sold borrowed money from the platform selling their shares.
