I saw a report on PBS pointing out that a lot of the money being lost is from pension funds, and they framed it as if the Gamestop traders were 'robbing' old folks...........but all I heard is that a hedge fund is gambling with peoples' pension funds by betting on the deaths of companies. This isn't exactly 'good guy' behavior.

The real issue is the hedge fund (s) that sold(shorted) more stock than is physically tradable. An illegal practice. The reddit crowd correctly identified this. Now the shorters have to buy back more shares than exist at whatever price they can or keep paying the interest on the borrowed short shares. This is the squeeze that is talked about.
