Although at Round 2 in Brazil Damon qualified an impressive 9th and was running in the points for a while. A far cry from just a few weeks previous.

6 sec deficit in terms of fastest lap in the race? In this period qualifying was very close, just like today, but races were not the same which is strange. P1 - P8 or so on average were just seconds apart but everyone beyond, regardless of car, was always lapped until the retired cars came along. The early V10 era was completely unpredictable which made it so loveable

@@kakhak Mate the car was much better buy this point. John Barnard had started with the team mid year and set about improving the car. Yes it was a dog at the beginning of the year Damon admitted as much but it got better in the last half of the year.

Arrows used Hart engines in 98, which were underpowered, but the A19 had a John Barnard-designed chassis, which was good. In 1999 they used the same car, but the addition of the fourth groove on the front tyres ruined the chassis, and so the car was awful. In 2000 that got Supertec engines, which had plenty of power, so Arrows finished 6th in the Constructors I believe. In 2001 they used Peugeot engines rebranded as Asiatechs, which were powerful, but the chassis was troubled. 2002 came and the team got Cosworths, which were finally proper engines, and they had a solid, stable chassis, but they went bust after the German GP.

@@cribbe6547 The biggest sin of Tom Walkinshaw was that he expected to succeed right away. Damon was a great driver, but far too expensive for a team like Arrows. 1 million per race was very expensive and i really doubt they managed to cover it, event though they had a fresh world champion on board. The money Diniz brought would keep them comfortable for quite some time without such expenses. In 98 they decided to make jet another major error with taking over Hart engines and building them themself...The car was by far not bad and could have scored more points with better engine in its back. Then came 99 and prince Malik, a disastrous season and jet another financial blow 3rd year in a row. In 2000 it looked like they have managed to get their act together. Solid engine, new title sponsor, good drivers and no new debts made...But back to their problems they went in 01, designing a car with a fundamental flaw of too small gas tank, which prevented them from getting results because they needed to pit for fuel more often. Also Walkingshaw losing in court against Diniz and needing to pay off a settlement really helped to the downfall of the team. In comes 2002, new lead driver - Frentzen which was good, but probably not cheap. The team ran on fumes at that time, and we all know that went.... BTW, the car was just beautiful. When we cross the line it is obvious that the team could have been alive for quite some time, if Tom would be satisfied with their Midfiled status and take a more cautionary route, by being strong midfielders with hopes of getting something better in the future. Manufacturers were knocking on the door at that time, and perhaps he should persue a Honda or some other engine manufacturer in a hope to strike a factory deal. On the other hand they would probably been sold off somewhere in 2005, like Minardi and Jordan got, since small privateers were going extinct very fast at that point.

Seems to me, that Yamaha just wasn't good enough on rour wheels. They are strong and succesfull in motorbikes, but never couldn't do it in Formula1. Zakspeed, Jordan, Tyrrell, Arrows used Yamaha and had trouble with it.

    • @Myrvold

I think they could've had some success if they had kept financing it. The Yamaha engines was basically Judd engines with Yamaha financing and some tech.help.
The 97 engine was a bit to unreliably, but wasn't even 30HP off Renault and approx 15kg lighter with a very low center of gravity. Too bad they stopped financing it at the end of 97.
