Ironically, the company calls itself Netherealm Studios, yet cares the least about the characters from the Netherealm in Mortal Kombat. On top of misusing characters like Scorpion, Quan Chi, and Shinnok, Sareena gets only a brief cameo in MKX, and Ashrah is never seen or mentioned in the reboot timeline.
MK4, MKDA & MKD the newer characters never really were that good, that’s why they only put like 1 or 2 characters from those games in future releases. Tanya, fujin, kenshi, Qun Chi, Frost & Bo Rai Cho are the only characters to be put in future games (MKA doesn’t count). They only put sareena in MKA because he model was already made for MKDA so it really wasn’t that hard to put it into MKA. I think she would be a really cool character to add to the main series I just think they know what fans want & not a lot of people remember MKMSZ & she’s & they don’t explain her at all in MKA so tbh people probably thought she was a new character added for that game
She was spared by Bi Han and then allied herself with Kuai Liang and also worked under Quan Chi like Scorpion. Her story is intertwined with so many fan favorites its honestly baffling on how little they used her.
Sareena is the bee's knees. Which makes it even more annoying how underutilized she is in both timelines, especially considering you showed us just how easy it is to use her in the story
At this point, I think that if you are apart of the writing staff for the next MK game, we can usher in a new era of fighting perfection.

So out of all the people Sareena had connection with like with Bi-Han and Kuai Liang, she ends up with Kabal in MK11 Arcade ending, despite the fact she never had interaction with this man. What the hell, Netherrealm Studios?! Either way, you really nailed it with this video.

Apparently one of the ideas MIDWAY had tossed around back then but never got around to doing was that Frost was going to eventual be revealed to be the daughter of Bi-Han and Sareena. Also Frost was supposedly going to slowly become a more heroic individual after Armageddon. Sadly this was all thrown out when they decided to completely reboot the entire franchise once WB started getting involved.

Sareena deserves better. She’s either reviled by the silly fan girls who hate her relationship with Bi Han or she’s lumped in and shat on by the 3D era hateboner crowd. It’s nice to see the love for this underutilized character. How awesome could she be with a new design and move set. Wasted potential indeed.

I always find it disheartening when a character in any kind of media like Sareena; who has an intriguing backstory; a cool design to boot and a sizable fan base who care about them, only to be shoved to the side to make way for other story decisions. It's sad really, and the fact that she hasn't been a playable character since who knows how long is doing a disservice to people who care about minor characters like her.
I know Sareena is not the only victim to this (trust me she is far from the last), but even then all characters should be given a role to play; no matter how minor those actions are and even then small actions can create larger consequences. I love details like that. Hell even the dynamic you laid out between Bi-Han/Sub-Zero/Sareena is almost in line with a stage tragedy. The very idea of a person helping you stray the path of evil to that of good, only from them to... take that same path they helped you leave is heartbreaking. If that doesn't get anyone in the feels, then I'm not sure what does anymore.
Also I have a soft spot for demons taking the road to redemption and helping the heroes succeed, so take that as what you will.
Geez and I thought NRS Jade got the shaft. Sareena was always an interesting character to me (minus her Armageddon face rivaling that of the Phantom Menace) and I was upset and confused of how she got downgraded from a cameo with small impact to just random image in the NRS game. Just let my girl do one thing that shows character merit
I fully agree. I was excited to see more of her in MKX but got nothing. Sareena deserves better treatment. What also pisses me off is her suddenly ending up with Kabal out of nowhere. She never even met Kabal in the past. She had more connection with Bi-Han and his younger brother. As if I didn't have enough reason to hate MK11 more than I already do.
The only character that didn't get grossly mishandled by NRS is Johnny Cage.

@Fwuffycodbunny The chapter dedicated to Scorpion and Sub-Zero's alliance was the game's biggest highlight. It didn't last long. After Scorpion dies by D'vorah(who cares) we don't see Kuai Liang react that his newly formed Ally and friend just died. Seriously they could have had scene with Past Scorpion and Sub-Zero where he mourns Hanzo's death and tells Scorpion about the events behind the rivalry between two clans orchestrated by Quan Chi, but no. Sub-Zero had barely anything to do with the story and it feels so wasteful because they easily could have had emotional or significant confrontation with his brother and Frost but no. Such wasted potential!
Interesting idea on Serena because I like her character and I think she’s really interesting

I am a big Kuai Liang X Sareena shipper myself, but I can understand why people ship her with Bi-han, but those are the only guys that she has a positive relationship to in the games. Everyone else is either professional, like the special forces, or antagonistic, like Quan Chi. They were better off having her marry a new character or not at all than what they did.

A woman, who was motivated to save Bi-han's soul, who saved her life and she helped his younger brother to restore his older brother. If anything, i'd rather see her with either Bi-han or Kuai Liang because it would make sense and not with Kabal. Screw you, NetherRealm Studios!

sereena is actually one of the minor characters i did like. ther is so much potential with her and bi-han....and it would be awesome if she had stayed with kuai liang and joined the lin kuei
I thought Sareena and Li Mei would have been DLC in MKX they the most popular female characters from the post MK4 era.
Unfortunately, NRS seems to hate the 3D era Kharacters and try to undermine them every chance they get.

Sareena was in MK:Mythologies which came out before MK4, which should count her as a 2D-era character. Instead they decide to keep Tanya and Dvorah and filling in space with new characters like Jacqui and Cassie. We even got Frost of all female characters in MK11.

Another layer to this is that in Ashrah's Deception bio she specifically refers to the other Brotherhood demons as her sisters, who Quan Chi sent to kill her. So Ashrah taking Sareena's advice could lead to her having to choose between killing her sisters or staying trapped in the Netherrealm and bound to Quan Chi. I think that would make for some great drama.

Glad im not the only one who was confused with sub zero's eye color
Sareena was the character I was looking forward to most in MK11. I seriously thought she was going to be part of the main cast, especially since Noob and Sub Zero were both in this, would've been awesome to have her interact with Noob and see what hes become. But alas, she got the always the bridesmaid never the bride shaft again.
On a side note, there was a leak prior to the game coming out that had all the DLC that was gonna come out, which included Sareena. But as the DLC was officially revealed, turns out the leak was correct with the only exception being Sareena deconfirmed for being 11 (even though the leak got Nightwolf, Sindel, Spawn, etc correct). I'm still holding onto hope she'll be part of KP2, but I seriously doubt it.
One of the things that I became aware of was that MKX and MK11 were written by completely different people, which is why NONE of the plot threads of MKX were followed on for MK11 and we went straight into a timeline fuckup so they could hit a big reset button and do whatever they wanted with the next game.
Sareena would have been an excellent keystone telling why Bi-Han is corrupt in the first place; that he spent his life being a hardass and when he finally came across someone who helped him out of the goodness of her heart, she was seemingly killed for it. Hell, that would have been a perfect mark in Kuai's ending telling why Bi-Han remained in the darkness by choice.
I also agree, fucking ANYONE would have been better than Jacqui. I still won't forgive them for having her hijack Kotal's trailer for MK11.
She definitely deserves a cool Netherrealm story ark also involving more of those denizens like Ashrah and even the Oni creatures therein.
I kinda hope that in the new timeline that her and Bi Han escaped together and possibly had a child with each other. And maybe later on when Kuai Liang gets cyberized, we can keep him in that form and have his nephew take on the mantle of Sub Zero, keeping with tradition where the previous Sub Zero gets transformed into something else and the title of Sub Zero passes down to the next in the family.

Midway/NRS really squander all the potential of world building when it comes to the Netherrealm. They keep the status quo of the most popular two - Scorpion & Noob - and everything else is either forgotten or swept under the rug. The Oni, the Demons, Ashrah *and* Sareena. There is a lot to explore and mine from a plot standpoint, when it comes to this universes equivalent of Hell. But no, we get lame cookie cutter Revenants and generic Doom monsters as the main body of the realm's inhabitants in the new timeline... *_SIGH_*
Plus, before you write him off completely. I do recall reading a particular Khronicle that even managed to give Meat an interesting and engaging story...

@@The4thSnake Nearly halfway through them. Encouraging to hear they might be continuing. It is the most I've been impressed by MK stories since 2002, with Deadly Alliance.
In MIDWAY's defense, they at least featured a lot of those characters and concepts in prominent and even playable forms. Plus they were the ones who came up with all of that stuff in the first place. Netherrealm doesn't even try. They kill off all of the less popular characters and ignore the richer parts of their lore and universe because dipshits like little Frankie over at the misinformation foundry that is fightersgeneration didn't like them.
Still waiting on Kochal - god of chaos who is worshiped by the Oni, to actually show up besides a small side quest in Deception that is more a tease of something awesome than it is an actual quest.
Or Baphomet to join the canon, or The Evil Ones, considering their concept art and potential world building they could provide would be worth it.
Or hell, let's bring back Lucifer so Shinnok has something to do other than being a little bitch.

Ikr. He isn't even mentioned in the story and the only time we hear a character say is name is bi-han in a random pre-fight dialogue with his brother. Not even Kuai Liang talks about Smoke, his best friend who was in a near depression over Kuai Liang's cyberization.
sareena’s design (especially her mkx design) alone made her one of my absolute favorites, she has SO MUCH potential and can be really interesting, hope they do more with her someday
I bet you if Sareena was to be released as mk11 dlc, they will design her with full metal suit of hard steel armor covering up everywhere for their agenda smfh.

It was nice that someone was thoughtful enough to fill in the blank and actually explain what happened to Sareena for anyone that might’ve wondered.
I wish someone could’ve done that for Smoke, Reptile, Kung Jin, Takeda, Jade or any number of characters that just disappeared for whatever reason between 9, X and 11.
Sareena met Bi - Han in the Netherworld where she was a servant of Quan - Chi and gets killed by Shinnok. This happened in Mortal Kombat Mythologies Sub - Zero.
And there's a very odd easter egg in the game regarding Sareena. When Noob defeats Skarlet in the first round he's saying to her: "You're like Sareena". Personally i think that it is a referance by developers that shows that they were choosing between Skarlet and Sareena. Sadly i don't think that Sareena will make it to mk11.

I play mostly as Noob. When he defeats Scorpion in first round he seldom says: "Hasashi..." or "THIS is my vengeance". When he defeats Kuai Liang it's: "Die, brother".

Every time I think of what NRS MK could have being considering it's pedigree, I just get pissed off. This is a franchise with so much potential; the awesome characters, the different factions, the different realms, and the different interesting stories that could have been told. Such a shame.

Sareena is a victim of being a footnote Character, she had not too much of an impact of the story and is just simple forgotten by many or simply an Easter egg. MK X was mostly about establishing the new heroes, so her being there meant she has to give them more screen time than her, like with Sub Zero and The revenants.

Thank you for this! I've been waiting for Sareena a LONG time! One of my favourite ever characters in MK and shes been seriously underutilised all these years. I genuinely dont understand how she hasn't made it into a proper game outside of Armageddon and how her interesting lore hasn't been capitalised/expanded upon. Maybe if NRS focused on the organisations/clans other than the boring Special Forces...

You know for a story like mortal kombat, its a lot more complex then it actually is. Even though story mode in games is longer than movies, it's still not long enough to explain key details of other things. Thats why this series would have to be written in a book, because books have no limits to what they're writing. Of course not just one, but many books. Idk how many

Unfortunately the Red Dragon seems like a concept that'll never get another chance. Netherrealm studio just flat out ignored the Armageddon story in this new timeline despite several factors of it still being very much in place. Considering that the Red Dragon's very existence is completely tied to Argus, Blaze and the battle of Armageddon, that's a major blow against their chances of returning. On top of that many people will likely never give Movado and Hsu Hao a chance no matter how well written or improved they become because of stupid overblown internet hate memes.

Never got all the hate for the red dragon characters Mavado was one of my favorites in Deadly Alliance and Hsu Hao was fun to play as so why do people hate them? as for Chaosrealm Havik is one of the most heavily requested characters yet gets constantly ignored by NRS the last time I recall him being even mentioned was Noob's MK9 ending, Seido aka Orderrealm has also been all but completely ignored outside of an MK9 ending too what's up with that?!
Dude, we could get a character with a fucking demon install in an MK game. Someone on the team needs to get fired for not doing this

Sareena is my favorite woman character in the Mortal Kombat series, Ed Boon gave her no justice In the entire series, she only appeared in Mythologies Sub-Zero, the second half of Deadly Alliance, and in Mortal Kombat Armageddon, she only appeared in the new time line in MK X section of the Netherealm, we don't see her again in the rest of the series, like I said before no justice for Sareena screw you Ed Boon ☠️

Thank you for adding these various issues that continue in NRS as they did in Midway. Sareena and Quan chi both retain the midway era design, regardless the timeline differentiation. It is a possibility that Ashra is a different take on Sareena and some of her story elements, but like Sareena they were never explored past one or two games. As for the konquest mode it doesn't state who is the author, Alex berentine was mkda's original author and an author in mka, Midway's own version of tekken tag 1. I find it odd that the other sub bosses alongside Sareena were not explored as well. The final years of the Tobias and Vogel era gave us many interesting concepts on paper that manifested on character swap levels with unique designs (Sareena, Kai, Tanya, Reiko), all of which suffer from similar points which you've made, i.e: Characters that are swaps rather than complete and unique characters (Tekken used this only a handful of times, like Christie instead of Eddy in T4),.
Thanks to your video I see that continuity and consistency in writing began to suffer ever since mk tournament edition for Sareena (Goro and Shao Khan were connecting their plot to their games. Khan with mkda and Goro with mkte). I hope we'll be able to see more consistency from the team, as some members of that team that gave us firstly the complex characters and their rebooted varients at times.
Noob Saibot's MK Deception ending was actually canon except Sareena saved Kuai Liang before Bi-Han & Smoke could kill him.
I like Sareena as a character they should use her more often
With any sequels to MK1, I hope we can get a more coherent storyline for her. Since, in Ashrah’s ending, we see her break from Quran Chi (and we can likely assume every ending in MK1 is canon, as implied with many of the intro dialogues), so there may be a point in the future where she helps Scorpion and Smoke defeat the Lin Kuei and possibly even redeem Bi-Han.
Actually Sareena’s bio for Armageddon says that Quan Chi found her and convinces her join his side as one of his warriors again after she loses her human form again after fighting off Noob Saibot and Smoke and the sorcerer promises to give her a permanent human appearance in return. She also thinks that Kuai Liang was better off without her because of the spell Quan Chi put on her. She didn’t want Sub Zero to see her demon form because she was ashamed of it.

Speaking to the hair inconsistencies.. You do know hair can be combed over from left to right lol. All she has to do is part her hair further to the left of her scalp, and the streak will move to the other side of her face when combed over lol. I agree with everything else, but that part just made me giggle lol.

You know what would be interesting if frost failed rebellion actually injured Serena enough to channel her demon form and she nearly killed frost with it and the younger sub zero not realizing that she's in her demon form retaliates and freezes frost thus he doesn't know of her betrayal! Instead uses it like a super healing technique!

Great video. I honestly wish her and Ashrah were playable in MK11. Ashrah I miss the most but I don't know if I'll ever see her playable in a future installment sadly.
Honestly the writing & misuse of interesting characters like this one in MK10 & MK11 has me disinterested with the franchise lately & I've played since MK1

The writers at mortal kombat need to sit down and look at the lore. I’m actually not a fan of them forcing another reboot. Characters like kotal Kahn and takeada were cool and I don’t see any chance of them ever being brought back.
