I love how Alfred helped bring out Bruce’s warmer side in the original series. Whenever Alfred would make one of his classic sarcastic jabs, Bruce would usually follow with a wry smile and a light remark of his own. Something I missed in TNBA with the more stoic version of Bruce
@@SerumLake Ironic, considering Alfred's warmhearted concern for Bruce was what stopped Mr. Freeze in his first appearance. That thermos of chicken soup Batman defeated him with
I like to think that Alfred's excellent portrayal in BTAS boosts the show's appeal to young children. Many kid's cartoons, especially around that era either had parents be absent/dead, parents be cartoonishly evil, completely incompetent, or have the show mindlessly tell kids to listen to their parents without ever showing the actual parent-child relationship. BTAS doesn't fully escape this, since Bruce's parents dying is baked into his backstory as Batman, but as a remedy to this, Alfred's portrayal as a kind, loving parent, combined Bruce's reliance and trust in him shows a good relationship between parent and child. He may be a bit idealized, and sadly not every child can say they have someone like Alfred by their side, but I'm still glad that Alfred is presented the way he is. He shows kids a kind, paternal figure to look up to and feel comfortable around
@@gavinboyer4634Alfred inspired me to do just that, as I watched this growing up. He taught me that I can be proper and still a little sarcastic and fun in good measure.
For me the definitive Alfred moment in the entire DCAU will always be him comforting Shayera in Justice League after she is confronted with having to wait to learn if she will remain a member of the Justice League after her betrayal, telling her "In my eyes, you'll always be a hero".
My personal favorite version of Alfred is The Batman (2004) version, but the Btas version is a close second. I especially love in the episode Nothing to Fear, where he says Bruce's father would be proud of him because he's proud of him it shows perfectly that Alfred is more than just Bruce's butler but also his father figure.
Fun fact! A Batman in military terms is a supportive role, a person that serves and tends to serve the needs of an officer so they can better fulfill their duties. In a lot of ways, Alfred is the Batman’s Batman.
We all need an Alfred in our lives. Glad to see you bring up the Eternal Youth episode where he finds someone other than Bruce to be with. The BTAS version is of course the definitive iteration but I also like the sterner Gotham version played by Sean Pertwee.
Alfred will always be the most quintessential element of Batman's mythos who truly raised Bruce to be the man he is today and help be his guiding light like any good father would do
Some of the words that spoke most to me in the series were from Alfred’s last appearance, and ultimately the last role Efrem Zimbalist Jr ever played. “If I may, I am neither a soldier nor a superhero, so I am unqualified to judge your actions by those standards. But what I do know is that without the difficult choices you’ve made, we wouldn’t be here to share this nice cup of tea. In my eyes, you’ll always be a hero.” How fitting that even in his last moments on screen, this version of Alfred spent his time comforting and guiding the lost, the hurt and the weary. People talk about how Superman Wonder Woman and Batman are the three pillars of DC. But never forget that Alfred is the bedrock that one of those pillars rests on.
No matter what adaption, Alfred is always present and acts as Bruce's guidance, assistance and above all else, his father. I like how in BTAS, he's always spouting these charming sarcastic quips that manage to keep Bruce grounded, while also being able to have moments that show Alfred's genuine care for the billionaire he considers his son. Some of my favourite moments from him are in Mask of the Phantasm, particularly that scene where Alfred comforts Bruce after his final confrontation with Andrea. *"I don't think she wanted to be saved sir. Vengeance blackens the soul Bruce. I always feared that you would become that which you fought against. You walk the abyss of that every night, but you haven't fallen in and I thank heaven for that. But Andrea fell into that pit years ago, and no one not even you could've pulled her back."*
_ Raising Bruce wasn't easy, he was an angry child due to his parents violent death. If I remember correctly, in Gotham Academy comic it was revealed that Bruce got kicked out of the academy for constantly picking fights with bullies(no, they didn't bully Bruce, he was defending other kids) even severely injured them _ Also in Gotham Academy Damian was very likable. He got kicked out for taking the fall when he & his friend(the main cast) were poking around the academy hidden past. He did this because he knew he can rebound form this while his friends would suffer dearly from being kicked out & having a black mark on their permanent record. One or 2 of them is there thanks to scholarship & would have lost everything if they got kicked out. Ironically, one of the 2 scholarships is sponsored Wayne Enterprise(but she doesn't know Bruce's Batman & thus was afraid he would take it back, if she cause trouble while investigating the school. In reality Batman would approve of such an inquisitive mind)
Spot-on with this one. Batman can work without a Robin or Batgirl to assist and learn from him, or a Nightwing or Red Hood to push closer to the lines he won't cross. He doesn't _need_ a Justice League to function, or a group of Outsiders to back him when he's unable to count on the League. But a parent, someone to keep him human, to cure what ails him, remind him of where he can improve, and lift him up when he's at his lowest point? Everyone needs that, and that's who Alfred is to Batman.
I’m a huge fan of the bat family, because Batman might want to be a loner not involving anyone in his war in injustice, a war he expects one day to kill him but he’s too optimistic and with too big a heart to actually turn away the Dick Graysons, the Jason Todds, the Stephanie Browns and that all starts with Alfred

@SerumLake it's RUclips it's been doing it since 2021. Even without curse words or insults, they still block your comments so I have to make sure it was posted.
I think we're the best moments for Alfred. That describes this relationship with bruce is what happened after batman dies, in the comics after Darkseid killed him, there's just this week. All week in the backcave , they're all morning is lost , they noticed that of all the justice league members, he prepared a precautions for everyone except himself, at the same time alfred comes out bearing tea trying to lighten the mood, they didn't ask him.Are you okay offered but offered replies? No i'm not, my is dead, that line is powerful and cold.Start telling everyone how serious the situation is, even Dick grayson nightwing alfred's other son also has struggle dealing with his emotions, the 2 men who know Bruce the most sit there together and morning his loss as a family.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how Alfred was specifically targeted by Mr. Freeze because he was Bruce's surrogate father. Your views on Alfred's response to the costume in Mask of the Phantasm is interesting. I always thought his reaction was a bit extreme and chalked it up to him, perhaps, never seeing it all together before. Excellent video. See you next week, and Happy New Year.
One of my favorite Alfred moments was in the episode where Bruce gets scooped as Matches Malone and thrown in the box, Alfred makes a daring rescue attempt in the bat plane even though he's terrified, everyone needs a homie in their life like Alfred.❤
Alfred is one of the most important and best characters in the Batman mythos , he is more than just a butler, he is Batman's father, he raised him and is always there for him.
I'm certain BTAS Alfred was the inspiration for the butler Norman from the anime Big O; another posh, silver fox gentleman helping a bachelor billionaire (Roger the Negotiator) save his city.
Eternal Youth and the last laugh is the only time where Bruce wears his costume in the house. And what do you know he only did that because he was concerned about Alfred well-being.
Regarding your statement about people preferring either the extended bat family or preferring Batman as a lone vigilante, I actually like both, because it shows Batman’s growth as a character. He starts off thinking his crusade is a solo mission, but starting from when he adopted Dick Grayson he eventually begins to trust and let more people in again, and while he’ll never be normal, at least this brings him one step closer to normalcy.
Alfred was certainly not Bruce's sole parent figure. I believe Dr. Katherine Pulaski; I mean Dr. Leslie Thompkins played a considerable role in his upbringing too. 😇
Hope you can do a video on Dr. Leslie thompkins as she’s a character I’d really like to see appear more in Batman media. She’s been underused post Batman TAS. She was in Gotham but done really different.
I never understood why people dislike the bat family. Do they want Bruce to be alone forever? I know Alfred was there for Bruce from the beginning. However, the point of the bat family was to see the growth of Bruce and how he becomes less isolated. A good example was The Batman version of the family but that's a discussion for another day. Alfred has always been a great father figure to Bruce and will always be there to comfort him. I remember the scene the two shared near the end of phantasm, where Alfred comforts Bruce. He doesn't call him "Master" Bruce, but just Bruce. That moment shows how much Alfred cares for his son and still warms my heart. I like to think that Efrem acted like a surrogate father to Kevin during the time working in BTAS. When you consider the tragic Life Kevin endured, it makes any scene between Batman and Alfred more poignant and heartwarming.
It's always so sweet that Alfred is more than just Batman/Bruce Wayne's Butler, he's also his only family ever since his parents are gone. Alfred definitely makes a great father figure to Batman.😊💕
One dynamic I find interesting is the dynamic between Alfred and Damian Wayne Starting off as Damian seeing Alfred as just another servant like the servants he had access to whilst he was growing up, whilst Alfred is still his sarcastic self, already tired of Damian’s ego but still willing to provide care. And as Damian develops as a person, he soon has two distinct relationships between Alfred and Bruce, Bruce is someone Damian wants to make proud through his actions, but Damian knows that Bruce likes to put up walls and shut down certain types conversations, so Alfred becomes someone that Damian can talk to about stuff he feels that Bruce would rather try to avoid. Or at least that’s how I interpret how their relationship has developed.
Alfred was the best part of BTAS in my opinion (and there is a *lot* to love about the series). His performance actually inspired me to be more upright and proper, as he showed me that one can indeed be both proper and sarcastic in good balance.
I've read a book called Honor Harrington, and she's part of a space navy. Her version of Alfred is a steward named MacGuiness. While he doesn't play a very prominent role, he is there for Honor throughout almost all the books.
Honestly BTAS Alfred is the ultimate incarnation of the character for me. He is the parent Bruce needed when he lost his parents, his rock in the road of life, his confidant in his crusade against crimes. Above all, he's the father Bruce needs to ensure his soul never fully gives into the abyss that is being Batman.
Alfred had a heart breaking comic in the dcau. In an xmas issue of jlu run, we see how one Xmas alfred went all out and gave Bruce mountain of gifts under a gorgeous tree. Bruce (already training to be batman) thanks Alfred but states hes not interested. Alfred quietly cries over the gifts. It really showed how deeply Alfred cares for bruce and how he views Bruce as his own
BTAS' Alfred is not only my go to mental image of Alfred but of most butlers in most fiction since I was a kid, Also I will say that while I like the cartoons that have a small cast of sidekicks/just Alfred more...the webtoon comic Wayne Family Adventures is the best in getting the ENTIRE Bat Family involved and actually comunicating rather than butting heads...recent arc of that not-withstanding but there was a good in story reason for that And there, Alfred is close to his BTAS self. He loves the Bat Family and is loved in kind, They try to do right by him. And the old Brit would happily say they do indeed.
Honestly, I like the Robins because I always hoped one of them would succeed Bruce someday and let the man have a retirement. Since they axed Wally West Flash in favor of bringing Barry back that's become a pie in the sky dream, But I do hope Damion or Tim or even Signal someday step up to the mantel cause Bruce deserves to be the man in the chair for a while.
Sassiest Alfred moment in all media: Bruce is in a rush to go out as Batman and he tells him the generous portion of Nothing he made for him will go to waste. Then proceeds to throw Nothing away in the trash.
Everyone's talking Mask of the Phantasm up, and while I've not seen it, I do agree it's got some great lines, we can't forget one of the best lines in the original BTAS episode Nothing to Fear. "Nonsense, your father would be proud of you. I know, because I'm proud of you." That's the best line and it's one Bruce needed to really hear while still under the fear toxin.
One of the reasons why I love Alfred is that he reminds me of my grandparents and that he is always brings light in to Batman life and it sad that he is not alive in Batman beyond and that is one of the reasons why I think that Bruce is so cynical in the future.
Alfred is Bruce's rock and the one person who prevents him from going over the edge completely and becoming that which he seeks to prevent from happening!
Alfred was at the core of Batman in BTAS in a way that TNBA failed to capture. I will however highlight his depiction in "Over The Edge." When the Gotham PD raid Wayne Manor and Commissioner Gordon has Batman lined up in the sights of his pistol, it's Alfred who tackles him and saves Bruce's life. Bruce even pauses to acknowledge Alfred's sacrifice as he's arrested so the remaining Bat Family members can escape. Knowing what we know about that episode doesn't take away the impact of this totally in-character moment for Alfred: he'd take a bullet for Bruce, that's just who he is.
3:47 “The formal title Master, meaning male under eighteen.” This is so important and so lost on English speakers across the pond. Alfred still sees Bruce as that boy who relies on him.
Never heard "Master" as strictly about being under 18, but about being a bachelor. Since Bruce has not yet married, he is in a formal sense still a boy and not a "Mister". It still fits.
Surprised you didn’t mention Over the Edge. Alfred willingly tackles an Officer wielding a Rocket Launcher and tries to fight them off just so Batman can escape and not be harmed.
I love the joke Alfred made in the classic April Fools Day episode with the Joker, where he said to Bruce that he drew him a bath but showed him a drawn picture of a bath. LOL! 😂😂
I think the comics show how much Bruce is Alfred's son when we meet Thomas Wayne as Batman. Bruce does look up to his late father, but his morals are all Alfred's

Frequent, quality uploads. Keep up the good work!
Thank you, Sean!
Alfred is always been family bc his servitude as a butler will always go beyond that.
This feels like a Father's Day video.
I always liked the moments when Alfred talks about his friendship with Thomas Wayne.
I guess RUclips didn't post my comment.
I really enjoyed Alfred in the DCAU. He was the corner stone of support, confidence and love for Bruce from Mask if the phantasm until Justice League. He loved Bruce and all of his grand kids, Rich, Barbara and Tim.
He enjoyed being around the Justice League, having respect for Superman and Hawkgirl.
I honestly wish we got Alfred one more time in unlimited or see his final moments in Batman Beyond.
I have always enjoyed Alfred and his live action appearances have always been great.
You’re not the first person to say their comment didn’t come through. Very strange!
@SerumLake it's RUclips it's been doing it since 2021.
Even without curse words or insults, they still block your comments so I have to make sure it was posted.
Who's Rich? Did you mean Dick Grayson?
@@The_Phantasm read my comment again and you will see why I said that
@@mandalorianhunter1 I'm guessing because you said RUclips didn't show your comment, but if that's the case then why did mine show up just fine?
Alfred is the most affable Conquistador we know. He claims this land in the name of Spain.
Fun fact in every batman show Alfred is only using one percent of his power
Alfred was one of my favorite characters on BTAS.
8:32 Batman: You think you know everything about me don't you?
Alfred: I diapered your bottom. I bloody well ought to SIR.
I have always thought that Thomas Wayne was Bruce's father, but Alfred Pennyworth was his dad.
For he shall take this land... for Spain!
I wish we'd gotten the story of him passing away from old age in-between JLU and Beyond.
Heart strings would be bent hard indeed.
Yeah, I consider Alfred to be half the reason why Bruce doesn’t end up like Rorschach
I've been reading the Wayne Family Manor comic and Alfred is just as good there. It might be as subtle as a brick but it's still a fun read.
Do not interrupt Alfred's tea break!
Alfred is one of the most important and best characters in the Batman mythos , he is more than just a butler, he is Batman's father, he raised him and is always there for him.
0:03 "Those that adore Batman and the wider Bat-Family."
Bullock: Guess I'm included too then.
He's the creepy uncle that no one likes
I'm certain BTAS Alfred was the inspiration for the butler Norman from the anime Big O; another posh, silver fox gentleman helping a bachelor billionaire (Roger the Negotiator) save his city.
Without Alfred to care for him, I feel Bruce/Batman wouldn’t be as compassionate in BTAS and the rest of the DCAU. He would be cold and alone.
He starts off thinking his crusade is a solo mission, but starting from when he adopted Dick Grayson he eventually begins to trust and let more people in again, and while he’ll never be normal, at least this brings him one step closer to normalcy.
without Alfred Bruce might've become someone on par with the Punisher.
Great review
Alfred was certainly not Bruce's sole parent figure. I believe Dr. Katherine Pulaski;
I mean Dr. Leslie Thompkins played a considerable role in his upbringing too. 😇
I have been missing the advent videos the last couple of days.
Nice video on Alfred, btw.
It has been strange not having to film them every morning…
Hope you can do a video on Dr. Leslie thompkins as she’s a character I’d really like to see appear more in Batman media. She’s been underused post Batman TAS. She was in Gotham but done really different.
There’s not a lot to say about her, to be honest. But what I may do is a video about Appointment In Crime Alley and talk about her then
I never understood why people dislike the bat family.
Originally Alfred was similar to Hercule Poirot.
Alfred is the GOAT! Tho I think this video would have been more appropriate for Father’s Day
Bat-Mite did appear in the DCAU, And he has a big role in the comics.
Even though her appearance(s?) were sparce, I would argue Bruce had an aunt or grandmother figure in Dr. leslie Thopmkins.
I love when I starts with just Alfred and then grows as Bruce grows or even loses himself.
One dynamic I find interesting is the dynamic between Alfred and Damian Wayne
Starting off as Damian seeing Alfred as just another servant like the servants he had access to whilst he was growing up, whilst Alfred is still his sarcastic self, already tired of Damian’s ego but still willing to provide care.
It would certainly be an odd fellow who would prefer their Batman without even Alfred, whatever they feel about the rest of the Bat Family.
I've read a book called Honor Harrington, and she's part of a space navy. Her version of Alfred is a steward named MacGuiness. While he doesn't play a very prominent role, he is there for Honor throughout almost all the books.
Without Alfred, there’s no Batman
Honestly BTAS Alfred is the ultimate incarnation of the character for me. He is the parent Bruce needed when he lost his parents, his rock in the road of life, his confidant in his crusade against crimes. Above all, he's the father Bruce needs to ensure his soul never fully gives into the abyss that is being Batman.
I think 04 Alfred was just as peak
Alfred had a heart breaking comic in the dcau. In an xmas issue of jlu run, we see how one Xmas alfred went all out and gave Bruce mountain of gifts under a gorgeous tree. Bruce (already training to be batman) thanks Alfred but states hes not interested. Alfred quietly cries over the gifts. It really showed how deeply Alfred cares for bruce and how he views Bruce as his own
BTAS' Alfred is not only my go to mental image of Alfred but of most butlers in most fiction since I was a kid,
Also I will say that while I like the cartoons that have a small cast of sidekicks/just Alfred more...the webtoon comic Wayne Family Adventures is the best in getting the ENTIRE Bat Family involved and actually comunicating rather than butting heads...recent arc of that not-withstanding but there was a good in story reason for that
And there, Alfred is close to his BTAS self.
I really like how both Batman's and Bruce's humor clearly takes after Alfred's.
I don't care what anyone says, Alfred is my favorite member of the bat family.
"what do you know about being a surrogate father figure?" - Lego Batman
Let's never forget that Alfred put diapers on a baby Bruce - he knows EVERYTHING about Batman
Alfred is Bruce's rock and the one person who prevents him from going over the edge completely and becoming that which he seeks to prevent from happening!
The legacy of Alfred's character development makes me eager to see how it progresses in season two of _Batman: Caped Crusder._
10:11 Hor hor hor hor hor
Alfred’s arc in MOTP is just him realizing it really isn’t just a phase… dad
They're the only family Batman has, I'd figure he would do anything to keep them together.
I honestly feel without Alfred, Bruce would've turned out just like the villains.
Never heard "Master" as strictly about being under 18, but about being a bachelor. Since Bruce has not yet married, he is in a formal sense still a boy and not a "Mister". It still fits.
If Jor-El & Lara are Thomas & Martha Wayne. Pa & Ma Kent are Alfred.
Surprised you didn’t mention Over the Edge. Alfred willingly tackles an Officer wielding a Rocket Launcher and tries to fight them off just so Batman can escape and not be harmed.
That’s The New Batman Adventures and a hallucination (I am SUCH a pedant… 😂)
That's Barbara having a hallucination via Scarecrow.
I love the joke Alfred made in the classic April Fools Day episode with the Joker, where he said to Bruce that he drew him a bath but showed him a drawn picture of a bath. LOL! 😂😂
Honestly, while I visually think of this Alfred, every line I can remember comes from The Batman's Alfred, who is just hilarious.
I think the comics show how much Bruce is Alfred's son when we meet Thomas Wayne as Batman. Bruce does look up to his late father, but his morals are all Alfred's
Wonderful video
Thank you for watching it
@SerumLake your welcome happy to view your videos about batman and companions and villains.
Alfred has always been one of my favorite characters. Let’s face it, Alfred is probably the one thing keeping Batman sane against everything else.
I love Michal Caine but I also really liked the Alfred in Gotham and Jeremy Irons in the DCEU.
