i recently did something like this, but with the top 1000 fics; the most commom fandoms were harry potter, marvel, teen wolf and my hero academia (if i remember correctly)
When looking for fanfic I find if you’re just browsing fewer tags are better. Select fandom, filter for 1 ship (maybe 2 if you’re picky and it’s a big fandom) and 1-3 tags including filtering in/out AU, exclude crossovers or filter out any fandoms you don’t want crossovers for, sort by kudos and go to page 3/4. That is where you will find the best fic.
@@shriya9925 because the first couple of pages are usually good, but pretty bland in comparison. You can absolutely start from 1, they’ll usually still be excellent fics, but if you want something that will absolutely blow your mind I tend to find you need to go a few pages deep.

the amount of shots you would have to take for every time coley read “i am groot” (in the fic) would be 436, so you would have alcohol poisoning 21 times over
I should tell my friend that we're going to listen to someone read a really popular fanfic and ever time she says I am Groot we have too take a shot I can't just imagine the look he'd give me
Honestly when looking for the "best" fic of a fandom, go by bookmarks (especially for multiple chapters, anyway). Because: 1) Hits isn't reliable because, if it's multi-chapters, a lot of those hits are from people re-reading/reading multiple chapters. Or checking on the fic. (And no, hits don't count the author's views. I think it's because of how the draft system works. Like, whenever I'm doing something in a draft chapter rather than what's published, I can imagine it would confuse the fck out of AO3 if it tried counting that. Lol. Ergo, it's easier to just exclude the author's views on a fic entirely.) 2) Kudos tends to be a thumbs-up, but a lot of people may give a fic kudos from the first chapter, but not end up following the fic all the way through with updates, so the quality may have dropped. 3) Comments are a mixed bag. They indicate passion, but that doesn't mean good passion all the time. A fic with low stats but a high number of comments may have people arguing about the fic. Lol. That, and, AO3 counts each comment in a thread, so if there's 30-comment long discussion, that's not going to be as "popular" as a fic with 30 individual comments. Bookmarks are reliable because that is a) someone is bookmarking to read later, and b) the bookmark number isn't even accurate. The number you see on a fic isn't the total bookmarks, it's the total *public* bookmarks. (I know this, since I write lol, and when I'm looking at the stats page, the number of bookmarks is different because the stats page also count private bookmarks. The public bookmarks tend to be ~1/4 or 1/2 of the total. Also applies to comments; the stats count comment *threads* not total comments.) Anyway. What this means is that the fics that people have bookmarked on their profile that is there to promote it, in a sense. So another good way to find good fics is actually through other people's profiles and going through their bookmarks, especially if they tag and/or add a comment within them. And bookmarks tend to be things that people will re-read as well. Obviously, this doesn't mean that the other stats aren't important. Because of course they are. Any stat above 1,000 (except for hits; I'd go more 10,000 with that) is a "popular" fic. But, of course, it also depends on the fandom (so, like, some fandoms will consider 1,000 hits a lot, and others won't consider 10,000 to be a lot), how old the fic is, etc. But that's my piece of advice. Bookmarks are more reliable because, frankly, not everyone bookmarks everything they read, and if they do, it's not common for people to make every bookmark public.
@@ardentsamael1011 Yup yup. That’s kinda what I meant by discussion, but I’ve also seen fics where most of it isn’t the author. Lol. bUT yeah. Not every author answers, and some answer a lot.
@@mackennnna1234 But here's the thing: people with accounts can add kudos by either switching if they have multiple accounts, or just signing off. So even then it's not reliable. That, and there's that kudos is one of those things you can't undo, so if you give kudos at the beginning, but then a fic takes a turn you don't like, like quality or subject matter, that kudos doesn't go, but bookmarks can be undone. Hence another reason why I like bookmarks. Now, kudos is not a bad way to do it. I think it's good, especially for one-shots or otherwise shorter stories.
Just about without fail, unless I am looking for a specific tag, like, really specific, I find an author I like, go through their bookmarks, and go from there. I almost never use the actual search feature unless I have something specific to look for.
I have over 200 book marks, but only 30 subscriptions. For some reason I feel the need to sace every fic I read and I use to do that by bookmarking. I've gotten over it now though. Also its all private bookmarks, but still. Some people do bookmark everything.
All joking aside a piece of work like this really shows how art in general works. Because it conveys a meaning (be it vague and up to interpretation) even though the words themselves have little to no meaning on their own. There is clearly something happening in that fic even thought we as readers are left to wonder what that something is. And on a fundamental level, this fic shows how we consume books because we are able to recognize an internal struggle when it is presented in the story (by bolder words and the crossed out words) or see when a character is making a mental list of facts and observations. TLDR: even though the words themselves have no meaning the structure of the text itself hints at a storyline and I think that is absolutely genius!
I am literally in tears, I Am Groot is the most emotional thing I have ever read. I read it first when I was 12 years old, and it really inspired me to take up writing. Whenever I'm feeling sad, all I need to do is re-read it just to feel better. New York bestseller could never. 11/10 😩
The first minute hit me like a train because “Maybe a fanfic got blown up on social media” forced me to remember “The Albedo x Reader” fanfic era of Genshin tiktok. In which, I read it. Thanks for making me remember a dark time for a whole fandom.
just listening this is making me cry. i don’t cry often, especially not for fanfics so this seriously meant a lot and just the raw emotion in here is quite beautiful.
A legendary fic I'd only ever heard of in passing. Thank you, Coley, for blessing my ears. I can't believe I waited so long to find this one, but I'm so grateful for your beautiful and heartwrenching reading of it. Truly a masterpiece of literature that may someday grow to be mentioned in the same sentence as classics such ad The Illiad and Les Miserables.
I swear, I was just reading a fic on ao3 and the EXACT moment I clicked on the next chapter, I got the notification Coley uploaded. It was like I pressed the automatic "BamThereGoesAnotherAo3ColeyVideo" button.
Honestly I was like one paragraph in when I finally realized what I was hearing. I thought that was the emotional starting of an actual sad story, I. Thought. This. Was. Real.
I first discovered this fanfic searching for some guardians of the galaxy stuff when I stumble upon it. I thought it would be a funny little fic but I wasn’t prepared for the sheer magnificent of this fic. Like the author I had to take a break half way through from the sheer amount of emotion I felt. Groot going through so much yet staying so happy and finally learning who he is in the most magnificent way, accepting and being proud and it was just- **chef’s kiss**
thank you.for reading this transcendental masterpiece with a straight face, I burst into sobbing tears, especially at the part where he said "I am Groot"
The storytelling and how you brought the story to life through your voice was so powerful! I've never heard a more moving story in all my life. I usually don't enjoy listening to audio recordings of stories, but you really sold this! The writing is a masterpiece and read out loud, it becomes even more beautiful. I was sobbing by the time the story ended. Never have a fanfic moved me in such a way. Masterful! Deserves to be put on the curriculum for all higher education schools around the world! I could definitely spend hours analyzing the story and find meaning behind each "I am Groot" 100/10.
@Lace S. Two, fandoms. A crossover. Two works of Studio trigger, a certain, really horni japanese anime studio, that also somehow makes the best shit on the market. I love them, because they don't shy away from sexual themes, in fact they do the opposite throwing them at you like some baseball game. This is demonstrated perfectly in their two magnum opus. Kill la kill and darling in the franxx, the fandoms I'm writing for. They are two similar series, one day I stumbled upon a really bad, but at the same a fic which was the catalyst to me making the crossover. It was between the same fandoms, but didn't do anything. It was good, but increadibly superficial, pretty much no charecter development, besides rehashes of the plot line of one of the series. It's honestly about everything. From ideology, to beliefs, relationships and why they are important, masseges crancked up to the question of should you you keep going up and up and up, even if it makes the lives of your collegues a living hell. Hidden under layers upon layers of anime ecchi irony. Narritive elemts, involving charecters pusihng up to psycological horror level. PTSD. Dosisiative identity dissorder. Every fear under the book. Making fun of every single anime shounen under the sun, including itself. Having so many, yet so few, tropes, that in itself, it makes fun off, and also emeraces. But I'm bad at describing how charecters look. Sad.
@@emmae2520 Just an year. It's only a mil words, with my buffer chapters, which in themselves. Are 300k words. I'm saving them in case I break my chin or somthin and I can't update for a long, long time.

Ok I think we all know this fic is a masterpiece, but the reading of it was absolutely stunning. I shed tears, which wouldn't have happened without Coleys absolutely stunning voice

Also, comments can be unreliable if the author answers them, as it counts in the total number of comments
Some people do bookmark everything.
you will never be able to hear the phrase "I am groot" the same ever again.
I can't think of a single fanfic more deserving of a dramatic recitation than this one. Sheer art. 😂
I bet I am Groot is the world’s most spicy smut. It’s just written in Groot’s language
I am literally in tears, I Am Groot is the most emotional thing I have ever read. I read it first when I was 12 years old, and it really inspired me to take up writing. Whenever I'm feeling sad, all I need to do is re-read it just to feel better. New York bestseller could never. 11/10 😩
Who knew "I am Groot" can carry so many emotions and meanings in this fanfiction?
The first minute hit me like a train because “Maybe a fanfic got blown up on social media” forced me to remember “The Albedo x Reader” fanfic era of Genshin tiktok. In which, I read it. Thanks for making me remember a dark time for a whole fandom.
name pls :D
I don’t even like x reader fics but I’m kinda curious now
I don't know if I should be intrigued or scared
THAT SCARRED ME OMG
@@neferpitou2687 can you tell me the name I’m really curious
just listening this is making me cry. i don’t cry often, especially not for fanfics so this seriously meant a lot and just the raw emotion in here is quite beautiful.
A legendary fic I'd only ever heard of in passing. Thank you, Coley, for blessing my ears. I can't believe I waited so long to find this one, but I'm so grateful for your beautiful and heartwrenching reading of it. Truly a masterpiece of literature that may someday grow to be mentioned in the same sentence as classics such ad The Illiad and Les Miserables.
coley saying "i am groot" over and over again for 8 minutes is not something i thought i would see today but i am grateful nonetheless
The beautiful and lively feeling writing and your reading is just *chefs kiss*
"I am Groot" no longer sounds like words to me
Yknow, as someone who has never read this, you actually fooled me with saying this was a literary masterpiece 😂
It is a masterpiece though, the raw emotion and detail in the fic is amazing.
Same lol
huge thanks to coley for taking the time and effort to go through this heartbreaking masterpiece truly a soldier
That fic was such a masterpiece tho I gotta say my favorite part was "I am Groot"
I swear, I was just reading a fic on ao3 and the EXACT moment I clicked on the next chapter, I got the notification Coley uploaded. It was like I pressed the automatic "BamThereGoesAnotherAo3ColeyVideo" button.
at some point it stops sounding like actual words
Honestly I was like one paragraph in when I finally realized what I was hearing. I thought that was the emotional starting of an actual sad story, I. Thought. This. Was. Real.
Absolutely hysterical. Already knowing the punchline made it even better somehow 😂
Ooohh let’s see which fanfic it is
Edit 6 months later: I have no memory of this comment or this video.
I am -
Terrified.
This fanfic made me cry so hard, props to the person that made this.
WOOOO I GOT HERE EARLY!
I love ur video's Coley!! They're super entertaining!❤❤❤
Edit: how did u say the SAME phrase THAT many times IN A ROW
@its Time What y
No because I really didn't see this coming lmfao
I agree that the emotional component here is intense. I had a full on existential crisis reading this.
I WAS ACTUALLY DEADASS EXPECTING FOR AN ACTUAL WELL-WRITTEN STORY ⚠️😨
I'm literally crying 😭😭😭 the raw emotion in this fic is immeasurable... I. Am. Groot.
We All Are Groot
@@DLCS-2 and so no one is Groot.
i like the part where groot said "its grootin' time" and grooted all over the place, definitely one of the fanfictions of all time
Yo can't wait to finish this video tomorrow
A literary masterpiece read with such emotion. Amazing, I kudos this video
I...honestly don't know what else I was expecting.
How could they say that? the tone and emotion in that "i am groot" left me in tears!
I'm writing a fic that is 1 mil words.
Very good.
For real?
@@emmae2520 yes
How long have you been updating it?
@Lace S. Two, fandoms. A crossover.
This is the first video I've ever seen from this channel and I am extremely confused. Subscription earned nonetheless.
When the fic went 'I am Groot' I felt that.
i thought this was about all the young dudes and got really excited for a second lslalaskskkskskska
ha same
Wonderful. Amazing. Transcendent. Show-stopping. Fantastic. Truly the best thing to grace this universe.
As soon as I heard the title i went "oh no" lmao
this fic was literally so emotionally impactful that i had to pause the video and get tissues bc i couldn’t see through the tears any longer. by the end of it my chest hurt so bad because of the amount of sympathy i had over this character. when they said “I am Groot” i felt that, i took that personally, it truly changed my mindset on life because at the end of the day…i AM Groot.
I am in tears , that fic is so emotional... I definitely need to bookmark it
Ok I think we all know this fic is a masterpiece, but the reading of it was absolutely stunning. I shed tears, which wouldn't have happened without Coleys absolutely stunning voice
I... I don't know what I was expecting.... But it wasn't that.
Jokes aside, thus would make a really good breakdown after an amnesiac figures out their true identity (and doesnt like it). Just replace Groot with the persons name
ur right!
NOTHING in all my dumbass logophile pondering has ever measured up to the exponential quality of this. I am in tears
I can't stop the tears
that one part ("I am Groot") really captivated me, the author must be going through something serious rn
I feel like they wrote an actual fanfic, and then replaced all of it with “I am Groot.”
I love this fic so much
The shear dedication to read all those I am groots is unimaginable. You have a better work ethic than fanfiction writers
you should do a video on passerine!! ik its a bit longer but its so gorgeous and i really think youd like it :)
it’s a masterpiece i cried so much reading it
I’m scared: is it actually good? Or is it something completely scarring or simply a troll?
@@axoltheartist it's actually good lol, pretty sad but still very well written and very enjoyable :)
@@xxsmriti oh, ok thank god.
@@axoltheartist it’s really good
Okay this was beautiful!~
Coley I feel you are factually and contractually obligated to do the pod fic for this fic, your narration just adds so much raw, real ness to the already amazingly emotional and turmotiolous story. Truly I can’t imagine any other voice for the characters, you are truly amazing at this
NOT THE I AM GROOT FIC NOOOOOOOOO SKFJSJD
I cannot believe you actually read this whole thing lmaooo it's a masterpiece
The way that I immediately knew which fic this was about
The way this story just ascend beyond everything is amazing. Each word that Coley says is like listening to the holy word. The emotion in her voice is phenomenal
The ending brought me to tears...
THEY DID NOT. How could someone write this masterpiece? I want to be this good someday. I'm not crying, nah.
Can’t believe you actually read the whole thing out loud! By paragraph two Groot didn’t sound like a word to me
Meanwhile all the authors who do doctorate like research to make sure their fics are as historically accurate as possible and only get 3 kudos: 👁️👄👁️
sounds like groot is going through an identity crisis. I can relate to that.
I'll never not love this fic. It got so popular so fast that I commented on it the day after it was posted and my comment doesn't appear until page six. And your reading is EXQUISITE.
The straight-faced buildup to this is honestly better than the fic itself
im scared
