I seen a great idea for boat fenders on a home built fiberglass houseboat on my trip to Louisiana last winter to pick up my boat. They used wide rear ATV tires and put inter tubes in the tires. They drilled holes by the bead to run the rope though. You can add air to keep them from collapsing. I talked to the owner because it was really a nice looking build and They lived on that houseboat on the Bayou full time and some little town along the Bayous have a dock. Some docks has light poles on the docks. He was having the same issue as you. The poles was hitting his roof line. The tubes in the ATV tires solved his problem. Just put air in the tubes. Any ATV shop has a pile of old tires they give away. But you may have to buy the tubes. Just a cool idea I remembered that could help with your lock issue. Some ATV tires are 12-15 inches wide when aired up. I know those big fenders are expensive. Free tires are cheap, and tubes don’t cost much. Just something to think about. I know some locks make you tie off here on the Ohio anyway. Safe travels 🇺🇸⚓️
Thanks for the video Brenton ! I probably catch more than my share of fish but I also spend a heck of lot of time waiting for them to bite. Best wishes and good luck !

Just happened onto your channel this past weekend, really digging your content and thanks for sharing your journey(s). I live in a small town in Missouri about an hour and some change west of St Louis, 30 mins from the Mississippi and 20 mins from the Missouri river in Hermann Mo. A native of Texas who came here for work almost 8 years ago, been drawn to the water and river life...I've often wondered what it'd be like to travel the Mississippi as you are now. Yall are living one of my dreams!
Our crappie magic is a 1- 3/4" (scrub). For bass a floating jig head with a rubber worm simulated to have fallen from the sky out of an Eagles claw ~ Fish ON!
On the river, the majority of fish that you see jumping...you don't want anyway. If you are lucky they are hybrid stripers. Most of the time they are carp or skipjack. If you fish with worms, fish on the bottom. You will probably get a catfish, if the drum don't get to your bait first.
Great channel I was only shown in the last month. I am 34, wanted to do the great loop since i went to school at 20 living on the icw, have a beagle and have had beagles for decades, live in new england and just bought a runabout boat to do the great loop in pieces, while boat camping along the way ,to work towards a six pack license. Went to school for mechanics on japanese motorcycles so the scooter vids are also good to me. This channel is great. Though I have a different pov about the country and where it is or is going, I think I am more optimistic, I enjoy your videos very much
@backwatersandbackroads coastal NH, but if I was going to move somewhere it would be on the VT NY border to be on the great loop, on champlain or Hudson River lock system that connects the lake to Erie canal or st lawrence river ca or Hudson River to long Island sound or NY harbor .Maine is great , Bar Harbor is one of my favorite places on earth, but separated off from everything unless you've got an offshore boat.
@backwatersandbackroads looking forward to it, here's a free ideafor you. I've always wanted to visit all the deactivated coastal fortresses on the eastern seaboard I've been to a few so far
You are in our favorite areas when we RV in the summer. If you have not passed Cassville yet they have one of best little groceries and the nicest people. Loving your videos.
We did pass Cassville, almost stopped. Sounded like we should have. Having to pick and choose to keep some resemblance of a schedule ahead of winter. Leaving Burlington, Iowa now. Stay tuned;)
For, say, $30-$40 you could buy a nice cover for your scooter. Rain water gets into the switches and wiring connections. That alone causes problems. It hastens the demise of the machinery for no good reason. Just a thought. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
Long ago when making canoe trips down the Mattaponi river in VA we would come across bankings at least 20' high filled with seashells, and sharks teeth. What's interesting is where this was it was at least 30 miles from the ocean.
Hi just came across your channel. What a wonderful way to travel. I follow a gentleman, Sam Holmes, who sails all over the world.. when he anchors He has an app for his navigation iPad that he draws a area and if his boat position goes out of the area it alarms.. I've seen him use it quite often and has saved him a few times from crashing his sailboat onto the rocks. You may already have this, but thought worth mentioning. GREAT channel; I'm hooked now. Getting ready to retire in a couple of years and have been watching Sam's channel for ideas, but now you have my mind churning. Thanks and GOOD LUCK.
Wonderful! Yes, I watch his channel too. I will "sail away" eventually. Have you ever watched "Wind Hippy"? She's really good too. I stay away from the bikini channels. App: I'm looking into that and others. There seems to be one for everything:) thanks for finding us
I love itchy boots, the season 7 episode with all the trucks stuck in the mud was insane. Burned her clutch but she pulled it off with great storytelling.
Good morning! Looks like you are making great progress. Keeps getting a little colder and a little snowier each day. So many cool things along the way I’d have a hard time making it anywhere. Lol. Hope the warmer weather finds you guys soon. We are due for a warm up next week. Maybe I can get the rest of my fall honey-do list done. Stay safe!
Howdy Chris :) we have been so blessed so far on weather. To really stop at every little river town, you'd have to leave in September. Leaving Burlington Iowa this morning. Winter is nipping at heels
You have relaxation down pat my friend. it’s Helter skelter when I do a two week vacation on our boat trying to make as many miles a day as possible. when I turn on one of your videos my shoulders drop about 3 inches and I sit back and relax. Thank you. If you like blue crab you might want to think about picking up a couple crab traps when you get further south.
Oh yeah. We had crab pots last year on the Vagabond. I plan on getting another when I get ti Florida. Check out the video from last winter with "Old Couple Outdoors" ;)
I was watching the rain and thinking how we actually enjoy bad weather because we can cook up the wood stove and make the boat snug! A heat sorce is great to have! Which are you relying on more, the propane or the desel?
If your ever get to Clifton Tn marina you gotta check it out I grew up running trot lines and riding the old ferry back in the 70s great days for a kid
I'll look it up. Love Tennessee and look forward to getting there on this adventure. I won't be hurrying through the Kentucky lakes I'll tell you that.
Brenton get you a little jar of one inch gulp minnows and some 1 1/32 or 1 1/16 oz tiny jig head. Use some 6 pound test line and no split shots. That will catch a ton of crappie or bluegills(even a bass or two). Love the channel. Hope this helps brother. God bless. 🙏
I'll try it. We've been catching catfish on stink bait too. You have a Cdory? Great boats. I've had several over the years. They went and got popular and expensive. I'd love to have a CD25
@@backwatersandbackroads Yes sir. We love our Dory. Have had her a few months now. The 25 cruisers are great boats. Ours is a 22. We wanna be like you when we grow up brother. 😂 Safe travels my friend. 🙏
Thanks again for letting us tagalong on your amazing adventure. Made me remember some extended family, camping trips when my uncle would wake us up to pancakes and perch. Any chance, dragging a spitter as you go, would produce anything? No matter like you said much better fishing is in the future. Safe travels my friend …. And always try to peg out your Fun-O-Meter.
Thanks for that awesome comment brother. I've thought about trolling with a spinner, but 5 or 6 mph is too fast and it would also snag stuff. Lots of fish coming up....;)
I would rot some cheap chicken and get me some catfish, put a couple lines out while doing evening chores, try to put the bait off into deeper holes and listen for the drag
It's going to happen soon. Right now I'm running from winter. It doesn't look like it, but it's nipping at us. We're blessed not to be in it yet. 2 days if snow so far, 70 today
For fishing in shallow, light wind and current areas throughout the loop you might want to rig up some type of stake pole system for quickly moving and anchoring without dealing with the actual anchor. I am looking forward to you reaching those tidal waters and maybe getting into some reds, trout and sheepshead.
I totally relate to your abundance of caution n not try to sleep close to that dam!!! How many times would you get up that night to double-check 😃 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻
Btw,, I am really enjoying your adventure. I thought of ole Wayne last yr rolling down the Mississippi on a 17 ft open boat freezing while sleeping in it sure looked rough. I believe his channel would have taken off his he would have kept that sailboat and filmed his adventure. People like watching something they can relate to, like what your doing but running the miss on a 17 ft boat freezing your ass off isn’t one of em. Wish him success in the schoolie!
Best way to catch crappie is either bee moth or white jig grub with a green or pink jig head hook and place a green light in the water at night, you will definitely catch them that way, pretty much anywhere especially once you hit the Tennessee river. They do like to hangout around bridge pillars or brush piles.
Hello fellow scooter rider :) we have a 5 gallon tote that I refill at Walmarts and such. Or gallon jugs if we can't find one. 5 gallons of drinking water lasts over a week.
Lordy… your better than me on fishing … I live right beside a big pond that I built back in the 80’s … never wet a hook in it… but I allow a few to fish it… largest bass was 10.2 lbs there’s fish in it … but now they need learn how walk… just been so dry here in sw Mississippi for 4 months
Haa! so funny, the little rabbit hound..3 hours later 😂! I had a weenie dog and I would stack pretzel sticks on her nose..so much fun! She would hold them for most of a minute before I allowed her to eat her mini-cord of her favorite snack 😋
That's okay Brenton, at some point in the trip you will have fish jumping in your boat. I remember when Wayne took the shanty boat down the Mississippi, somewhere around Lock 19 he had Asian Carp jumping everywhere, no fishing pole needed. He actually fillet several out and put them on the grill. Are you keeping a daily or weekly log of your expenses? For people planning on doing this trip maybe you can talk about your budget for the whole trip......
A person not having a big house with an even bigger mortgage is a blessing, not a curse. I live in a motorhome on a small acreage in the country. I hope to live on water someday.
Brenton, when our CG rivertender subbed for the USCGC Wyaconda's area of responsibility north of Clinton IA to the Twin Cities; I made it a point to 1. Bring my homebuilt plywood and epoxy skiff (the design of that rowboat is called Whisp by designer Steve Redmond)....2. My Mountain Bike and 3. My ultralight fishing pole & spinning reel and all of my lures that I used in my home waters back in NJ. I fished from the banks, after our work was complete on the river. Places I fished were Fountain City, Lansing and Prescott, Wisconsin. A few others as well, but they do not come to mind right now. I did not fish with any bait, just my trusty Mepps #1 and #2 Aglia spinners. Even the Mepps Comet. No #3's or higher, I figure the Musky boys would use those bigger spinners. Brenton, remembering back some 30 years now, I still recall the great success I had with those spinners, catching both bass and crappie. That backwater slough you and Wavey were anchored in looked like prime bass and crappy waters. Enjoy this upper miss fishing cause once you get down to Clinton or the Quad Cities (and all the way to the bottom, I guess), the river takes on the appearance of coffee with cream and the sports fishiing goes out the window. Catfish and Gar. And I never caught either one! And yes, Lansing Iowa is about the prettiest small town you've shown us, so far. Safe travels!
We are in Burlington, Iowa now. The river is definitely getting muddy. I talked to a fella on the shore today fishing. He said he catches bass, carp and catfish. I think it's going to be a lot of catfish until Florida. Lansing is a beauty ;) so glad you found us and following along
enjoying your videos fan of huck, tom , jim and of course Harland Hubbard shantyboat. interesting if it was in B&W we would think of you as Harland in depression era America with all the homeless American's and whatever what anyone thinks if i was homeless i'd be right there along the Mississippi maybe make a shantyboat out of barrels and pallets lol . the other plus i love the water but i especially love small town America .
Idea I wanted to try was anchor the shanty in the current at nite .let the current drive paddle wheel generator ..then use electric to drive the board ..used fork lift motor ?? Now the whole time your moving the paddle wheel is still producing power ...EVERY ACTION Creates Opposite AND EQUAL REACTION !!! Mmm was Newton lying to us ?
That sounds like an idea for sure. A small wind generator would be nice too. Solar is just so easy and works. I've had no problems with power with 780 watts on the roof so far. Having a cold fridge is such a convenience
Thanks for another awesome video. I love the small towns, but they do seem like they never have any facilities and docking for travelers on the river. And if I ever do the loop, those homeless camps would make me nervous if I had to Anchor nearby for the night, since I'm just a woman traveling alone. I've seen too many Dateline episodes. LOL
Howdy, your concerns are valid. If you're anchored out, chances are you'd be fine. Those folks (hate to say it) tend to be lazy. Rowing out to victimize you probably wouldn't happen. Keep the doors locked and your personal defense of choice handy. A dog helps too. I hope you do the loop. Keep us posted. In the meantime, come along with us ;)
Howdy Brian, we passed through Smithland. They blew up the oil railroad bridge at the mouth 2 hours before we got there. Got to see a lot more of Smithland than planned for ;)
You can never be too safe. Two anchors is better than one. How much scope on the anchor line are you running? And do you happen to have any binoculars with ya? That'd help see them lock lights when it gets foggy. Take care !
@backwatersandbackroads awesome man, does your monocuar have the range reader option? Ive been looking for a good one, but kind of iffy on the Amazon offerings. If 3:1 works, don't fix it 😂. Not trying to step on your toes. Lol😂 . I was thinking 3 - 5 per foot of water depth. You're not anchor in the atlantic hahaha. But keep doing you!
How is it that Bob Ross still is an icon this late in historical reference! Ha... "There are no mistakes just happy accidents 😜!...what a pretty tree..." DBL ha
Keep this type of content coming. We (Me) want more!!!!!!! About Fishing-I've caught more fish on nightcrawlers than all other bait combined (natural and artificial). In an unknown area, I always start with a single worm hooked several times on a hook that is a little big for bluegill and a little small for channel cats (my 2 preferred eaters). If the first fish is a cat, stay with a single crawler with a better size hook. If it's a bluegill, used 1/3-1/4 of a worm. I generally do better with no bobber, accepting more snags, but experiment both ways. And experiment with weight, on the bottom, I like egg-shaped slip sinkers that will let the bait move a little. But will also use split-shot (bluegills) and try to use just enough weight. Really like fishing with just a hook and worm if wind and current will allow. The stick bobbers with lead are something new to me and I really like them. If legal, you could also try limb-lines (single hook) tied off to the railing with chicken livers or worms). Keep trying and don't be afraid to try different set-ups.
You got it ;) Thanks for the fishing advice. I like fishing with worms and a Bobber also. Simple but exciting. Watching the bobber go down is fun fishing. More to come....;)

I really dont understand river towns without municipal docks. It is like they are saying, "keep going, we dont want your money."
Exactly!!!
I don't think people traveling on the river is even on their radar. I've always thought it would be cool of we had a canal system like England does with the narrow boats
The little revenue that they would get won't pay for the dock.

@@stevey_z I'm going to do the ultimate Maine lighthouse series soon. All 168 of them ;)
@backwatersandbackroads looking forward to it, here's a free ideafor you. I've always wanted to visit all the deactivated coastal fortresses on the eastern seaboard I've been to a few so far
@@stevey_z what are those?? Sounds right up my alley ;)
Your videos are fantastic. I’ve been thinking of doing the same thing that you’ve been doing. Along with a 100 lbs lab. Thanks for your work.
@@TheCaninist thank you. Welcome. It's a great lifestyle out there. Dogs absolutely love it ;)
You are in our favorite areas when we RV in the summer.
Love it...another great video. Thanks
Thanks buddy ;) you've been here for a long time and appreciate you putting up with us.
Beautiful scenery! Thanks for letting us tag along 👍🏼
Thanks for coming along
As always, I enjoy watching...thanks much.
Thank you. I'll keep making them. Shooting for 2 a week.
Might have to sell the mustang and get an early start to our 2024/2025 Loop trip!. Glad you are doing well brother. Keep up the fun.
For, say, $30-$40 you could buy a nice cover for your scooter. Rain water gets into the switches and wiring connections. That alone causes problems. It hastens the demise of the machinery for no good reason.
Just a thought.

Oh yes. That would be smart;) it's a 500 dollar scoot bought just for this adventure. WD40 takes care of all that ;)
It is pretty 😊
Thank you again Brent. I enjoy the video . enjoy and be safe 😊
Thanks for being here. We're just getting started:)
Long ago when making canoe trips down the Mattaponi river in VA we would come across bankings at least 20' high filled with seashells, and sharks teeth.
What's interesting is where this was it was at least 30 miles from the ocean.
I wonder how that happened. I can see shells. A friend is collecting sharks teeth right now in St. Augustine.
There seems to be one for everything:) thanks for finding us
Yes I watch Wind Hippy too. She has come a long way in her abilities and is so adventurous@@backwatersandbackroads
You ..and itchy boots ..two of the best,, travel vids .
She's great;) Bald and Bankrupt is the GOAT in my opinion
I love itchy boots, the season 7 episode with all the trucks stuck in the mud was insane. Burned her clutch but she pulled it off with great storytelling.

we have a Genoa here in Nebraska...and we pronounce our little town...Ju-noaha.
I had a beer at the bar in Lansing, where you docked your boat. That was way back when I did my downstream adventure.
Cute bartender in there ;)
You have relaxation down pat my friend. it’s Helter skelter when I do a two week vacation on our boat trying to make as many miles a day as possible. when I turn on one of your videos my shoulders drop about 3 inches and I sit back and relax. Thank you. If you like blue crab you might want to think about picking up a couple crab traps when you get further south.
Oh yeah. We had crab pots last year on the Vagabond. I plan on getting another when I get ti Florida. Check out the video from last winter with "Old Couple Outdoors" ;)
@@backwatersandbackroads I will! I am familiar with the old couple
Wow so very Beautiful I cant wait till its my Time ..
You mentioned, you were heading "Home"! And it is a very cozy home at that!!! BestRoy
It is home! ;) I know you understand Roy
I was watching the rain and thinking how we actually enjoy bad weather because we can cook up the wood stove and make the boat snug! A heat sorce is great to have! Which are you relying on more, the propane or the desel?
So far, just propane. I'll be installing a small wood stove in here. I wish I had before we left on this trip.
small jiggs are the ticket too crappie fishing, and they last forever in a tackle box.

@@Stingray-jo2lv okay! Love good pizza.

Of course! :)
The Naked Gun movies are some of my favorites! Try some little plastic grub lures next time. Have fun!
I love those movies too. Endless laughing. My kind of humor. They don't make movies like that anymore.
And always try to peg out your
Fun-O-Meter.
@@backwatersandbackroads Yeah we are having some nice weather for this time of year. some nice days coming yet..be safe
For fishing in shallow, light wind and current areas throughout the loop you might want to rig up some type of stake pole system for quickly moving and anchoring without dealing with the actual anchor. I am looking forward to you reaching those tidal waters and maybe getting into some reds, trout and sheepshead.
I've caught a sheepshead. They are tasty...and I'd never put my fingers anywhere near those teeth.
I totally relate to your abundance of caution n not try to sleep close to that dam!!! How many times would you get up that night to double-check 😃 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻
Often! Last night I was up from lock 18. There was an island between us and the dam a mile away
Another great video
Definitely going to be fishing once we hut Kentucky lakes. Q: can you explain the green light?
Fun trip so far!!! What have you been doing to re-supply your fresh water??? Thanks...
Hello fellow scooter rider :) we have a 5 gallon tote that I refill at Walmarts and such. Or gallon jugs if we can't find one. 5 gallons of drinking water lasts over a week.
I’m leaving a comment just to help with RUclips’s algorithm. I use a minnow trap to catch minnows or just use plastic jigs for those tasty crappie.
Thank you for helping with the algorithm;) we seem to have broken inside. We'll be catching fish soon. Trust me...
Best part of the Mississippi up there by La Crosse and Praire du Chien. Enjoy the views!
Hey Brenton, Love the channel! Keep em coming! Let me know when ur near Prairie du Chien, my beagle Rizzo and I would love to meet up. Thanks
Howdy! Welcome. We passed Prairie during Chein a bit ago. We're in Burlington, Iowa now. Running from the winter that seems to stalled for a minute;)
That's a monster bass.
get some artifical baits...mepps anglia for instance....beatlespins etc...they keep better than live bait enjoying the trip so far..
There should be an anchor alarm on your sonar unit.
Yes sir. I finally started trusting it ;)
Haa! so funny, the little rabbit hound..3 hours later 😂! I had a weenie dog and I would stack pretzel sticks on her nose..so much fun! She would hold them for most of a minute before I allowed her to eat her mini-cord of her favorite snack 😋
She will literally do anything for food ;) those treats are the McDonald's of dog food ;)
Enjoyed your travels. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you sir

Maybe try a small white spinner bait sometime when u see them hitting the top like that just steady reel
Okay. I'll try it. Thank you
Brenton, when our CG rivertender subbed for the USCGC Wyaconda's area of responsibility north of Clinton IA to the Twin Cities; I made it a point to 1.
Try pink and white jigs with waxies.
On it ;) and easier to keep alive than minnows
enjoying your videos fan of huck, tom , jim and of course Harland Hubbard shantyboat. interesting if it was in B&W we would think of you as Harland in depression era America with all the homeless American's and whatever what anyone thinks if i was homeless i'd be right there along the Mississippi maybe make a shantyboat out of barrels and pallets lol . the other plus i love the water but i especially love small town America .
I would find a way. Just sitting around in a tent...not trying very hard.
Having a cold fridge is such a convenience
thanks
You bet buddy,)
Hey brother! Im a crappie jig maker. I watch your content and love it!! Can I send you a few handtied jigs so you can try em out?
Yes! Please. :) crappie is my favorite fish to catch, except maybe king salmon.
every time the lock gates open i think of the doors opening on the Dyson sphere on star trek lol
Yes! And jurassic park ;)
In the meantime, come along with us ;)
@@backwatersandbackroadsabsolutely, great advice
stink bait or dough bait cat fish. winter isn't the pan fish time but they can be had with fly fishing with small poppers and flies
Good to know. I'm okay catching cat fish too ;)
Stickypads work good
So are you turning south at Paducah or Smithland? Thought about maybe slipping down and paying you a visit. Hope it isn't during our cruise.
Take care !
Howdy, I've been running 3to1 scope. Should I run more? I do have a monocular with me. It works great.
When you coming through STL? I can see if I can get down there and take some photos
6 mph ;) it will be a couple weeks or so I'm guessing
