Pulling the clutch in downhill doesn't equal to "no gas needed" since the engine has to idle with gas, just put highest gear with no throttle and that will be "no gas needed" since the rear wheel will spin the engine without gas needed. You're still adding drag to the drivetrain with the motor slowing the bike down over time, yes it's "idling" but you'll have to get back on the gas sooner due to it slowing faster.
Due to the low weight of bikes bs cars, the engine braking of the bike will slow it dramatically if you go no throttle downhill. Clutch in and kill the motor, using the kill switch, not the key. When it's time to go, turn the kill switch back on, and restart. Well. I mean. My MT-03 made it from Harking Heights, Texas to Amarillo, Texas getting 53.1 MPG. And, we have crazy winds here. So. It wasn't bad. 460 miles and 53.1 MPG. Manufacturer states 54 MPG. So, pretty good. I got caught in a thunderstorm in Abilene, Texas. Which sucked. (This was on April 1, 2022 at 10 PM.) I got pelted with heavy rain and some hail. Bike took zero damage and handles the wet roads well. (Although, it needs a serious bath now.) Stayed at a rest stop overnight due to the storms. Almoat had rhe bike stolen while I was asleep on a bench. (I got really tired as I had left at 3 AM on April 1, 2022 to go get the bike. Left the rest stop April 2, 2022. I hit two birds. One was a killdeer and the other was a buzzard. Took the buzzard to the left hand (thank the heavens for golves) and it almost knocked the bike unstable at 55 MPH. The killdeer ate my knee. I hate riding pants and just wore jeans. 😒 So, my knee is bruised. I hit the killdeer at 94 MPH. Ouch! Barely missed a dead deer in the road between Clarendon, Texas and Amarillo, Texas on 287. That was fun. Nearly wrecked in Paducah, Texas due to a jackass that likes to brake check. Froze my ass off at night. It was quite the adventure. I enjoyed it. 😉
Throttle closed, in gear, rolling down a slope: injectors shut off. Throttle closed, clutch engaged (engine disengaged from transmission), rolling with the engine idling: injectors not off. Guess which is more efficient? Also tucking in behind the windshield makes a dramatic difference in efficiency at highway speed.
OC: As far as whether chase cheated depends on if you call it a test or a challenge. If the challenge was to go to culvers and back with a set amount of fuel I would say he wins. If the test was to see if normal riding met MPG claims........yeah he cheated. (Also I don't pay attention to fuel mileage on my bike, Turbo FZ-07 is all about Smiles Per Gallon).
Beau didn't think about highway mpg which is way better than city riding. If chase went eco mode on the highway he would see that mpg claim hold true. Beau you can't expect to hit mpg claims if your breaking the law, like all of us do 😆 now make beau do the same run in his cruiser of choice

Hi... Thanks for the video. How about run the bike for a week, performing day to day tasks as normal and filling up the car with no restrictions and see how much gas you use, economy and cost. Do the same for the production vehicle which l am guessing is some sort of Nissan (Sunny/Sentra/Sylphy) which may have a fuel capacity of 2L or slightly less or more depending on the version and then see how they all do and noting differences and trying to allow for differences such as weight and passenger and carry capacity. There was a journalist who did this comparison in South Africa some years ago. If l remember correctly, he said he liked the fact that he was saving about 45 minutes a day in traffic, fuel was much cheaper but there were other issues like if you have kids and when the weather turns foul. Overall he said a bike is still worth running despite some negatives. Of course there is the bonus of just riding a bike and seeing others stranded as you lane split between them, always brings smiles to my face. l have feeling bikes are not as efficient as the cars, especially the bigger capacity bikes but as a bike rider l would be happy to see bikes prevail.
Clutch in, neutral coasting does not work unless your bike is carbed. Fuel injection once you're up to cruising and letting throttle off downhill then you will use no petrol, if you're coasting then you use it to maintain idle.
Challenge: Full tank, normal driving (IE no hoonigan, just commuting) and see Fuel economy and test against a crusier, like a M8 lowrider/fatbob etc and see who wins. I'd argue its pretty close with the MT-10 and the M8 HD. Not range but MPG.
Channeling some of your inner fort9 with this production style. Still VERY unique still. I do wish you would've measured your gas at the end so we could see what your gas mileage was but it's okay.
OC: its like chase didn't learn anything from the Zero vlog with Motonosity and Dan lol also these "Shifted" videos are amazing Side note: the "How ridiculous" guys would be jealous of that sticker
pulling in the clutch when going downhill does NOT save fuel compared to engine braking clutch in the engine has to inject fuel to maintain idle whereas regular closed throttle downhill uses engine braking to turn the engine and should not need to inject any fuel to maintain the engine turning
OC - Yo I did a real world test for each bike last summer, on the '08 Ducati M695(stalk tank 3.7gal) I got 40.3 mpg and on the my 1988 (kick start only, stalk tank 3.4gal) Suzuki DR200 I got 86 mpg... no joke, was on reserve for almost an hour. I did carry a 1 liter spare fuel bottle.
Good video, but that is brutal mileage. I’ve never gotten any less than 40mpg on any of my bikes (except for track days). I typically see upwards of 60mpg when going on a bike trip. Heck, I even get close to 40mpg on my modded Volkswagen GTI (still over 30 when hard on the throttle).
My 1983 Suzuki GR650 Tempter is factory rated at 66 mpg, but my 40 year old bike only gets 45.6 mpg in city driving. That could be my inexperience, that nasty Portland traffic, the old age of the bike - but its probably because in 1983 they used real gas not 10% ethanol. That 17% reduction in fuel energy makes a big difference in my little twin. You can't run the carbs as lean as they had them set by the factory back 40 years ago.
You guys are pretty awesome. Keep it up. I’d challenge you to do a decent road trip on a bike people say you can tour on but you don’t think is tour worthy. Suffering, or not suffering. That is the question
Averaging right at 56mpg. 2011 Suzuki VStrom 650A. Almost all commuting through suburbia to work and back, just me, no wheelies ;-) . I have not seen the 'blinky bar'. I usually fill up after 200 miles. My previous bike, a 1984 Honda V65 Sabre would get right at 40mpg.
OC my 2016 fjr1300 es only gets 44 mpg and I mostly ride it not much above the speed limit either. O well its still a amazing and fun bike. Comfortable fast and handles well.
this video was so insanely interesting. please more videos like these. also my r1m w a full ti sc project that smells like raw gas dumping out the exhaust claims a 30 mpg on the dash
Okay so with this from mavis in Roswell which I’ve seen in the videos is near the shop, it’s about 9.2 miles for the Culver’s near wood stock (assuming that’s tue Culver’s you went to) so total round trip is about 18.4 and it gets 30 estimated mpg with a full 4.5 gal tank, with taking that into account they gave you .53 gal, or roughly 15.9 miles since it was roughly half a gallon. That means in reserves you’d have to have .012th of a tank left to get to where you’re going.
OC: I'm kinda the same way on my FZ-09. There's days where I couldn't care less about MPG, it's about SPG (smiles per gallon). Then I have days where I know I need to take the shittier highway with more traffic because it's 3 miles shorter and forces me to do the speed limit or only slightly over. I've got like a 3.5gal tank and I can do about 120 miles to the tank on a normal day, 100 or less if I'm hooning it. I'm sure I could get more but I just have too much fun on it lol.
OC: CBR650R ~4-5L/100km on highways, I was told I would get 5 at the dealership when I bought it. It gets ~8-9L/100km if you leave it in a low gear all the time though.
OC: I found a source that says my '06 R1200RT should get 44.7 MPG. I bought mine in 2018 and after the first 10 months I rode 5791 miles using 131.7 gallons for ... 43.7 MPG. Depending on the routes I took I stretched it out to the low 50s or dropped it to the low 40s. My car was mid 20s and my van (Chevy Express) well, mileage was age, it wouldn't have a learners permit. Yes, I love a spreadsheet and playing with numbers. All that said, I don't watch the gauge when riding, until I get down to 25-30 miles to empty. At that point, the range drops about 2 miles for every one driven. At least the couple of times I've done it. I'd be interested to see how much fuel you can pack in the tank. The same source I got the mileage from says the tank hold 7.1 gallons (which sounds about the same as the manual) Even running it bone dry (under 10 miles range left) I have never been able to get more than 5.6 gallons to the top. Did it twice. I'd like to see a few months of "normal" riding mileage, for everyone, and then compare those average to the number from the manufactures. See who gets the better percentages.
Harley specs says my StreetBob is good for 35/44mpg. What I have always ridden, is 42/49mpg. Granted, I did add a Stage 1 intake at the time of purchase, but did no MAP changes or other tuning.
OC: I don't know what you are on about when you say "bikes are not for fuel economy". My 01 600 hornet gets about 6l/100km or 43 mpg and my last bike (a yzfr 125) got 3l/100km or 78mpg
MT bikes are well known to have bad mpg. I do care about mpg but also tank size. A lot of bikes need to be refuled around 120 miles. That gets annoying if you do a lot of trips or just don't want to go to the pump all of the time. I often check out the mpg in fuelly and find out the tank size to see how far the bike can go.
Low to mid 50’s with my Moto Guzzi, doesn’t change much city or highway, Low 40’s to mid 50’s with the K1200GT, city versus highway does have a big impact. And for me mpg does matter to plan gas stops when touring
I was super surprised with my z125 that riding essentially full throttle everywhere, it still gets roughly 90mpg. If I was really really conservative on the throttle and I didn't live in an area that is all hills, I bet that I could get 110 but 90 is perfect. Fill it up every 100 miles and I keep track of my odometer really easily that way for maintenance purposes.
I find fuel economy an important item in my bikes abilities. With a 3.6 gallon tank and riding in some rural areas that can present 200 mile plus distances after hours. I really need to know exactly how far I can go on a tank under normal conditions. My 2022 MT09 will give 60 mpg if I am careful. When going normal without economic operation a consideration the MT09 as a rule delivers around 48 mpg.
You pushed the bike through the humberger joint😄😆😆👍the test was on gas not the tyres how much milage on mine? I do small bikes so I don't get to worry about milage but on my last 200cC I did 112 Miles on about 2.8 Gal, oh boy I really hope that my conversions are right. Basically on that bike about 1.32 G was all I needed every week for my commutes.
I average 54mpg on my 21 Ninja 400 and I don’t ride super economical. I know others are getting higher on the same bike but it’s still good for me. It seems that tank size is determined by fuel economy because almost all bikes (modern) will get roughly the same overall range per tank.
Most bikes these days get 100 miles per tank, which is more than enough for most riders. I find most drawbacks come when your doing long trips with a small tank.
Yeah I have a CBR650R and on my normal 'city" riding (I live on LI so I do hit a decent amount of traffic, plus I have a short commute) I get like 32mpg, but when I travel long distances I average about 43mpg so it really depends on the situation lmfao
Averaging 31 on my mt10 over 10k miles, had as high as 37 touring on a motorway (freeway) between service stations and as low as 23 riding with friends.
my official EPA fuel rating of my XB12SS is 50 MPG, which I can only get if I'm crusing on a 55 mph high way at the speed limit for hours at a time, normally back and forth to work I get about 30 MPG, yeah, I'm a hooligan like chase with a motorcycle
FYI, clutching in or coasting on neutral actually uses more gas than just coasting in gear, as the engine has to burn fuel to idle whereas it burns no fuel while coasting in gear. Just one of those hypermiling misconceptions.
Thats not correct either. its still burning fuel no matter what gear it may be in bcus the engine is running, and if youre tach is reading anything over idle rpm then obviously its burning more fuel than neutral... the only ACTUAL way to stop burning gas while coasting is to turn the engine off
@@CaffeineFreak13 Why dont people actually research stuff before pouring diarrhea out of their mouths? Does Shifting Into Neutral Really Help Fuel Economy? - Popular Mechanics
Guess everyone better start switching to ceramic bearings, pulling their rear brake system off and one of the front rotors to save on rolling resistance 😆😅🥴. Might not be much fun to push it but might improve mpg....lol.

OC: You should just ride like normal on one gallon (with spare fuel in the saddle bags) and see how many miles you can make it just to see what the "average" rider would get MPG wise. Besides, would love to see a video of Chase just ripping the throttle and wheelieing all over the place.
Lol fuel in the saddle bags? What happens during a drop and slide.
@@Whomecouldntb3 Worst situation, your username will come true
OC: I have a Suzuki GSX-S 125 that they claim does 122mpg, I'm getting about 98mpg. I'd like to see Beau do the same challenge on his bike and see if he makes it on the manufacturer claimed mileage.
My peace sports 150cc claims I think 75mpg buts it's a 1.2 gallon tank
This isn't a fuel mileage test when you're not riding the bike normally! It's entertaining though 😂
I agree you definitely dq'd yourself by clutch coasting and pushing
I purchased a used 2008 Piaggio mp3 250 IE it had 3,008 miles on it because I like working on it and upgrades it too! 💯
OC - Think to do this challenge fairly, they would have to do this without him knowing it was going on. That way is real riding style would show what his true millage on that bike is.
As always Chase has one of the best motorcycle videos on RUclips ❤️
Love from India 🇮🇳❤️
I did 21 on my MT10. It gets about 26 mpg. Nice not cheating. OC
Well.
Fantastic,well made video.
OC they get better all the time😀😀
8:21 "We'll hope for gravity" lol Yes, it's very attractive!
O.C. : I Personally loved the video and how it kept me leaned in my seat waiting on the outcome.👀 These tests would make a great series! I've gone 28 miles on my "blinking reserve bar" before on my 2015 FZ07. I have not ran out of gas before with it yet. I used to ride on backroads on my old RM125 and had to push it around 5 miles back home a couple times lol
What mpg are you getting? On my flashed 15 fz07 I can get 46 on the hwy or 31mpg avg ripping twisties
@@steedu46gt I'll check it out next ride as I honestly have my display showing the engine temp pretty much 98% of the time. Your numbers don't sound bad. My bike isn't tuned yet so this has me interested in finding out
@@steedu46gt Update: I topped the 3.7 gallon tank this morning and rode a total of 142 miles today. I topped my tank back off when I got back home and ended up burning a total of 2.9 gallons. I was getting between 50-55 mpg's on the laid back county road/highway miles and about 35-38 mpg's in the twisty's/ highway top speed runs. My bike's ECU is not flashed, but I have quite a bit of mods done to it and just under 33k miles on the odometer.
@@chadderboxmoto Thanks for the update. Ya I think my bike was around 50mpg before the flash. The ecu flash kills mileage but man that bike needs it more than anything else I have ever owned
@@steedu46gt Your welcome, I am definitely going to get mine flashed in the near future. I've ridden it for 20k miles in last few years of ownership and want to feel its unlocked power potential. lol I've heard it makes quite a difference.
You getting called out in the end was gold lol
Clutch in, neutral coasting does not work unless your bike is carbed. Fuel injection once you're up to cruising and letting throttle off downhill then you will use no petrol, if you're coasting then you use it to maintain idle.
Challenge: Full tank, normal driving (IE no hoonigan, just commuting) and see Fuel economy and test against a crusier, like a M8 lowrider/fatbob etc and see who wins. I'd argue its pretty close with the MT-10 and the M8 HD. Not range but MPG.
OC: 52mpg on my '21 MT-07. I put an acro exhaust on it and I coast more on my commutes to avoid the 5-0 and be kind to other road users.
Dirt bros challenge!…same challenge but with ADV Bikes. All dirt roads from Point A to B 😂
Loving this series! 🥳🥳
I have cb500x. It got average 67MPG. With full tank I can do 300+ miles. I laugh at every gas station now :D
Channeling some of your inner fort9 with this production style. Still VERY unique still. I do wish you would've measured your gas at the end so we could see what your gas mileage was but it's okay.
OC: its like chase didn't learn anything from the Zero vlog with Motonosity and Dan lol also these "Shifted" videos are amazing
Side note: the "How ridiculous" guys would be jealous of that sticker
pulling in the clutch when going downhill does NOT save fuel compared to engine braking
clutch in the engine has to inject fuel to maintain idle
whereas regular closed throttle downhill uses engine braking to turn the engine and should not need to inject any fuel to maintain the engine turning
Now if you have a bike that has a carb that's a different story. And a few new bikes still are
So what mpg did you in the end have? How much fuel was left in the tank after arrival to the shop?
seriously. if you're going to eff up the challenge by cheating, at the very least let us know what mileage you were able to eke out of it.
How much fuel did it use? What was the milage in the end? Fuel left in the tank?
OC - Yo I did a real world test for each bike last summer, on the '08 Ducati M695(stalk tank 3.7gal) I got 40.3 mpg and on the my 1988 (kick start only, stalk tank 3.4gal) Suzuki DR200 I got 86 mpg... no joke, was on reserve for almost an hour.
I did carry a 1 liter spare fuel bottle.
My mt10 does. 90 miles per tank being hard on throttle, when trying to be economic it can do maybe 110 miles
No joke, my 1190rx gets about 45 on the highway

My 1983 Suzuki GR650 Tempter is factory rated at 66 mpg, but my 40 year old bike only gets 45.6 mpg in city driving. That could be my inexperience, that nasty Portland traffic, the old age of the bike - but its probably because in 1983 they used real gas not 10% ethanol. That 17% reduction in fuel energy makes a big difference in my little twin. You can't run the carbs as lean as they had them set by the factory back 40 years ago.
I figure the gas light comes on or I hit 100 miles and it's time to keep an eye out for my next stop.
Love the video. I know you have older videos on it chase but would love a video breaking down your go pro and mic set up currently
Totally in the plan. I'm currently building my new helmet setup now so I'll be making a video on it when I get it finished.
I feel like they would make a great food show
Okay so with this from mavis in Roswell which I’ve seen in the videos is near the shop, it’s about 9.2 miles for the Culver’s near wood stock (assuming that’s tue Culver’s you went to) so total round trip is about 18.4 and it gets 30 estimated mpg with a full 4.5 gal tank, with taking that into account they gave you .53 gal, or roughly 15.9 miles since it was roughly half a gallon.
Love this channel period
I made it to like 20 on my Monster 1100 EVO and thankfully it ran out of gas before I could even leave my Cul de sac one morning.
OC:
CBR650R ~4-5L/100km on highways, I was told I would get 5 at the dealership when I bought it.
Good video! And for the side bags do the turn signals on the fender eliminator get in the way at all?
OC: I don't know what you are on about when you say "bikes are not for fuel economy". My 01 600 hornet gets about 6l/100km or 43 mpg and my last bike (a yzfr 125) got 3l/100km or 78mpg
MT bikes are well known to have bad mpg. I do care about mpg but also tank size. A lot of bikes need to be refuled around 120 miles. That gets annoying if you do a lot of trips or just don't want to go to the pump all of the time. I often check out the mpg in fuelly and find out the tank size to see how far the bike can go.
Love the content as always, any word on the camera car? Did they end up totaling the jeep out?
Low to mid 50’s with my Moto Guzzi, doesn’t change much city or highway, Low 40’s to mid 50’s with the K1200GT, city versus highway does have a big impact. And for me mpg does matter to plan gas stops when touring
“OC” You cheated Lol!! Great review and it’s what everyone had thought about or fears and that’s why we all fill up at a certain mileage.
cheated or not, I liked the fun element you guys brought into this test ;)
I was super surprised with my z125 that riding essentially full throttle everywhere, it still gets roughly 90mpg. If I was really really conservative on the throttle and I didn't live in an area that is all hills, I bet that I could get 110 but 90 is perfect. Fill it up every 100 miles and I keep track of my odometer really easily that way for maintenance purposes.
What have you done to have both front bulbs on? Or are you running with the long beam on? Great vídeo
38 ave mpg on my FZ10, i ride pretty chill for the most part
I find fuel economy an important item in my bikes abilities. With a 3.6 gallon tank and riding in some rural areas that can present 200 mile plus distances after hours. I really need to know exactly how far I can go on a tank under normal conditions.
My 2022 MT09 will give 60 mpg if I am careful. When going normal without economic operation a consideration the MT09 as a rule delivers around 48 mpg.
OC: You didn’t cheat, you just adapted to the situation. Also to answer your question big cruisers have horrible mpg.
Unfortunately, I had to sell the MT-10. Couldn't afford it and the car anymore 😪
I miss her everyday, it's putting me in a state.
Culver’s off 124 is a nightmare to get in and out of haha
Most bikes these days get 100 miles per tank, which is more than enough for most riders. I find most drawbacks come when your doing long trips with a small tank.
Yeah I have a CBR650R and on my normal 'city" riding (I live on LI so I do hit a decent amount of traffic, plus I have a short commute) I get like 32mpg, but when I travel long distances I average about 43mpg so it really depends on the situation lmfao
I have a 2020 Cbr650 with a little over 4k miles...I'm just now up to 45mpg mostly commuting. I was expecting better
@@williamdavis4809 yeah same but it gets more than double the mileage of my truck so I can't complain

Guess everyone better start switching to ceramic bearings, pulling their rear brake system off and one of the front rotors to save on rolling resistance 😆😅🥴. Might not be much fun to push it but might improve mpg....lol.
