Thanks TM for the awesome tutorial as well as the scripts! :) Just one issue which has already been noted by other commenters is that newer models aren't being imported with their textures on right. Instead, the textures are all in little clumps like plaid all over the model. I'm going to try and solve this myself. REALLY want a better look at that Genn model!
+chriskoking I'm workin on somthing to fix this easely, still manually cause I'm not finding the "flag" that tells me what drives this change in size :/ I know it is a byte cause the values are, 1, 8, 16, 32 ( for now ) but they are depending on the submesh, but I'm not seeing it...
Thanks man! I used this with a newer version of 3Ds. It gave loads of errors and most things did not work, but it allowed me to get the geometry (which is all I needed before doing some major reconstruction in Maya). I'm still struggling in regards to finding an older version of 3Ds. Great work, thanks again! /j

I was wondering how I might access the different animations without the art tools? Oh, it is a MacroScript, it means you need to select the query and add it as a menu button, or place the script in the scrip startup folder, than add it to a button in max, so it pops up the animation property window, it should look like this: media-elerium.cursecdn.com/attachments/151/556/AnimProps.png Google it to find out how to do this, there are a lot of video's about this.

Hey hey, there's a new issue with SC2: Legacy of the Void, and newer HotS models. They don't import with UV's and the textures just repeat all over it. An example is Artanis' Purifier Skin and Mastery Skin in HotS, and Amon's model in SC2. Any chance we can get an update?
+LordGrodus I know this issue exists in HotS, now I know it exists for LotV On topic, for now my priority is to be able to import particle effects, not to correct this issue. The uv mapping is off, but it is still applied, so you can fix this quickly by using the uv unwrap modifier in max and position/scale the uv map to the texture map Hope this helps for now T.
I'm terrible at manipulating UV's, also the ones I'm trying to figure out are kind of complex and overlapping and such. I've not been able to figure out how to align them properly, so the only hope for successful extraction lies in the hopefully future update of this script.

I've got a collection project going on for these models, and need the newer ones for an animation project. I hope you can update the UV issue soon enough, this is very frustrating.
Not planning on a new update actually, the issue is that the size of the uv has changed, so in Max you can easely resize the uv mapping to the correct size. I have been looking into this, but not found a solid solution :/
No, the rigging is done by reverse engineering the rig available in the file, else I would use some IK solvers and animation helpers, like you would find in the additional provided samples from Blizzard. I believe you can move the rig, but since it is animated and bind to a skinpose in max, it is difficult. T.

Thats because there aren't, the death animation are in a separate file, but it is use ragdoll for death animations, so there can be a force applied to the model and it looks different in every death animation. The only thing that changes in that "death animation" file is the alpha strength together with a dissolve texture, so it looks like it dissolves slowly after being killed.
The death animations are stored in a seperate file, but it has no actual animation, it is purely based on a death raggdoll, meaning that the physics engine takes over and the forces applied to it make it look deadly cool. Now, my script does not support this kind of reverse engineering. T.

I believe it is due to the fact that the material type does not exist, you will need to do that manually, or you imported a model that has multilayered uv mapping and the script does not support that, Although the last version I tested my script with was 2017 and not 2018, yet
What do you mean "dig" the texture manually, if you mean "alter" it, than it is pretty straight forward, open the Material editor, click on the diffuse map, and than right click and select "open in explorer" and change accordingly, If you mean find it when not using Max 2011, I believe I drop the path required in the output window of the Max Script (F11) Hope this helps ?
it should be a straightforward process if you know 3DS Max, there could be a tutorial out there from Max, also check one of my other tutorials, I believe there is one on materials & textures

Please download it again, I misuploaded the first one, it should open a popup window with the list of animations in it. You could also open the Dope Sheet, check that the Note Track is available and there you will find the names of the animations T.
Quick question: if you know how to do that and you already have done this, why don't you create some sort of database of 3ds max files with all the animations and stuff so other people could get them instead of wasting time on import-export part. I mean you can do that not for free for example somewhere on your website.

When trying to import it tells me this: "Type error: Call needs function or class, got: undefined" and marks row 754 in the script editor. Row 754 is "ReadBytes stream 4". If you know what it could be, I'd be happy to know. I'm using 3dsMax 2015 by the way. I'll try it with 2011.

Fluffy Natorr Yeah that is because you do not have the Starcraft Art Tools installed :/ they only work with MAX 2011 that I know of Keep on eye out on my blog : taylormousegamedev.blogspot.be/ I am currently updating the script to work without the SC2 Art Tools, but it also means that you need another way to import the models into SC2. What you can do in the meantime, open the script in the script editor and remove all reference to the starTool object, they all start with SC2xxx, like SC2HotSpot, SC2AttachPt, SC2Standard_Material etc... remove them and you should be able to import the models but without the Materials :/ T.

No I don't, although, the script should work for any Max version when you remove the StarCraft 2 features from the script I haven't come around that to do that I have been working on it again to get some more correct UV mapping for the new models, but not really a nice result ...

Whenever I import m3's from Heroes, I'm getting an incomplete model: tinypic.com/r/dg1ks2/9 MAXscript listener doesn't spit out any errors that I can see. Any ideas what might be going on? (This also happens to me in max 2009, don't have anything in between to test on at the moment)

This video is heavily outdated, you can't even get the Art Tools anymore, and 3ds Max 2011 is so obsolete that finding it without getting a virus is extremely unlikely.

Did you do the current rig the model has when i import it or was it default? cause i cant move the bones as their own they are stuck together

Taylor Mouse Alright. Thanks. The materials are no problem. 3dsMax is just the middle man for me. I'm using Blender.. and since there's no (working) m3 script for Blender out there, I had to use 3ds Max. Maybe I'll learn 3ds Max some day.
Does CASC viewer still work with actual version of Heroes of the Storm?

Because when I try open Diablo 3 it works, but when I try Heroes of the Storm, it says "failed to open storage C:\..."

+PaInGFX Interesting question, initially you cannot anymore, since the last change I did only supports the ArtTools for Max 2011, since this is no longer available as a educational donwload, you will need to remove all references to the ArtTools in the script, not an easy way but it is the only way :/
Been trying to reverse engineer the ArtTOols, but no luck so far.

The Problem is the 2011 Version Render my Png Seq with Alpha but without the pig,,,

With 3d max 2015 works it Perfect and all Render Images with Alpha
but when i import the HotS Files are these without Texture :/
All HotS Models are with black Textures,any Idea what is the Problem?

I don't know, you should not use more than 24 bits per pixel for Png, because it only supports 32 bit png (24 bit + 8 bit alpha channel )

I have found the Problem,the SC2 Art Tools has a Bug!
I must remove the hook for the tool when i import the Files,it works :D

No I don't, although, the script should work for any Max version when you remove the StarCraft 2 features from the script
I haven't come around that to do that
I have been working on it again to get some more correct UV mapping for the new models, but not really a nice result ...

Download Max, use import script, export to FBX and import into Maya ? Other than that, I have no idea

Hey Taylor Mouse, I'm using your latest version of the m3 importer in MAX 2017. Whenever I import m3's from Heroes, I'm getting an incomplete model: tinypic.com/r/dg1ks2/9
MAXscript listener doesn't spit out any errors that I can see. Any ideas what might be going on? (This also happens to me in max 2009, don't have anything in between to test on at the moment)
Also there doesn't appear to be any hidden geometry or objects to unhide

This video is heavily outdated, you can't even get the Art Tools anymore, and 3ds Max 2011 is so obsolete that finding it without getting a virus is extremely unlikely.

I dont see much competition to where some cocksmooch can complain about a petty issue on a free video with the sole purpose of helping others out.
