The pilot was a Duke University professor...he unfortunately did not survive. Condolences to his family and friends.

I'm curious how the instructor was giving proficiency test in an unfamiliar airplane

CFII was rating proficiency for instrument rating for pilot. He wasn't giving the guy a type rating.

he was doing an IPC - instrument proficiency check. The pilot is qualified to fly his aircraft and the instructor/check airman is evaluating his ability to fly the instrument procedures. this is quite common as check airmen will fly all different types of aircraft regularly
