The tree is beautiful but the shape is more like that of a Pin Oak (Quercus palustris) or a Northern Red Oak (Q. rubra). American Elms were once the most planted tree in the eastern US because of the way that they grow, it is what is called a vase shape. The trees would grow absolutely straight with no branches for the first 12-16 feet and then branch heavily at acute angles to the trunk, making them ideal to plant along streets to give an arched canopy over the roadway. The next town over from where I grew up in Ohio once had over 1000 American Elms, they were planted in the tree lawns of every street in town.
Michael McCarthy you are right about the shape of this tree. Unlike any American elm. Unfortunately most bonsai practitioners shape deciduous trees the same way as pines. They do not look at all like their species. The American elm is distinctive with its beautiful vase shape.
What a beautiful tree! Although it looks nothing like a natural American Elm...nor does the more quintessential deciduous tree with the rounded shape in the picture at the end. Most Elms I have seen have no lateral branching at all, only vertical branching very high up on the trunk, with elegant, flowing and twisty secondary and tertiary branching that forms a very high canopy which is relatively narrow for the height of the tree.
Jerome, thanks for all your very instructive videos. My question is about resetting the angle of the lower branches. You used wiring and the angles are stil towards the ground. With normal sized trees we sometimes use wood or metal braces to lift weak branches to a more upright position. Is that an option with this elm by using the rims of the pot to support the wood bracing? Most elm trees have angles between 30 till 75 degrees. First use an angle off 90-80 degrees and progress after 6-9 months until the required angle is reached.
Hey Martin! thank you very much for your kind words! I agree with you, the lower branches need to come up a bit especially on the left side I am planning on lifting that branch in spring when I repot the tree and do some root rafts.
This is a beautiful and healthy looking tree. I'm wondering why you still styled it like a pine tree? Especially when you show the picture if the tree at the end that is your inspiration. Just look at the branch structure on that tree which is very different from your tree. Great work anyway!
Hey Rene, thank you for the compliment. The tree looks a lot less piny then it did before i let the canopy grow out. It still looks a little pine shaped because this will take many years to correct. I could cut off all the branches and start over but I don't think that's right. Therefor, I will soften the look over time and make it look more deciduous.
Jerome, very helpful as usual, new to phoenix area and adenium horticulture. The sun is brutal in the summer, and you always refer to full sun, but after four hours, I am getting burnt leaves. any suggestions??
Hi Maier! You are right, it doesn't look much like a deciduous aside from the leaves, lol. The reason is because this tree came into may care 25 years after it was created, so all the branches were already in place and this is how people used to style Deciduous trees, just like conifers. The only way to fix this now is to remove all the branches and start over.
Martin Cigánik hey Martin, it’s the other way around. I made a conifer look like a deciduous tree. Look at the end of the video, where I show what the tree will look like in 5 years time.
@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Well if you mean the photo at 15:42 you cant make it from your tree. Look at the branches, almost all of them are growing upwards-just like decidious trees do. This makes that nice rounded shape of crown. You´ve got really nice Elm bonsai, but it won´t ever look like naturalistic tree. But, as we both know, there are many diferent ways of doing bonsai:-) Thanks for answer.
Bro you need to invest on some good mic. That's the only thing holding back your channel to grow more. I hate that I need to concentrate so much listening to you.
Beautiful bonsai and inspiring. Goodluck 👍
This is going to be a gorgeous American Elm Tree!!! I love your plan for it...just hope I'm still around to see it in about 5 years!!!
I like your bonsai watching coming from phillipines...and I learn for your discuss...

magnifique
Can I grow this tree safely in south Florida? I am in zone 10b.
Please make a video of root grafting 👍💙
Jerome! Hello from Utah.
Show us how you root graft the elm?
i like the end result but it looks like a spruce ore some conifer tree

Beautiful tree. What’s the age?
Hey Ericko, the tree is around 30 years old
bagus banget
dibio depaint thank you 😊
The photo is a tree original grown by Mike Jones, but now belonged to John Trott, Mendip Bonsai,
Tim Back thank you Tim, that is one gorgeous tree
Why do you make from decidious tree a conifer tree looklike?

Martin Cigánik it won’t look exactly the same, true but I can make it look less triangle and more rounded over time and that’s what I was going for.
good luck, you are fighting the original design
Wish he had trained it to look like an American elm's broom-like growth form and not in a pine tree form!
If you need pumice..I unload it by the ship full
