- This rich, chocolatey, flavorful bit of cake will melt in your mouth when you take your first bite. Whether you have made this before or have just eaten it before, I think you will enjoy seeing how easy it is to make. It freezes well so you have half it and have some later on. 2 cups all purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1/4 tsp salt
4 Tbsp cocoa, heaping
2 sticks butter, melted
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
Icing
1/2 cup chopped pecans, optional
1 3/4 sticks butter, melted
4 Tbsp cocoa, heaping
6 Tbsp whole milk
1 tsp vanilla
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Spray with baking spray a 13X18 sheet pan
In mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar salt.
In sauce pan, melt butter. Add cocoa. Stir together. Add boiling water, allow to boil for 30 seconds. Turn heat off. Pour over flour mixture, stir lightly to cool.
In measuring cup, pour buttermilk, add beaten eggs, baking soda, and vanilla. Stir into butter/chocolate mixture. Pour into sheet pan. Bake 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, make icing. Chop pecans finely, if using. Melt butter in saucepan. Add cocoa, stir, turn off heat. Add milk, vanilla, and powdered sugar. Stir together. Add pecans. Pour over warm cake.

Looks yummy Karen! My Mama's recipe for Texas sheet cake had cinnamon in the cake batter I believe. That's what set it apart from other chocolate cakes. I recall it was really sweet and rich!

That looks delicious! Gosh, I haven’t had this in YEARS! But I’m going to make it soon now that I watched your recipe.:) I remember that thin frosting, and my favorite part was that little bit of a crust that the icing gets when it sets up. Of course, I’d be watching this when I can’t sleep and can’t eat cake. Haha I was thinking that I might try the marshmallows in the Summertime for my Grandloves too. I thought maybe I’ll ice it first, then marshmallows, then torch the marshmallows just slightly, and sprinkle just a tiny bit of graham cracker crumbs on top too, for S’mores Chocolate Sheet Cake. My mother-in-law used to make this, but we’ve never found the recipe and she now has dementia and can’t tell me how to make it. I can’t wait to make this and take her a piece! Sometimes when I cook something and share it with her it triggers a memory. Thank you for this.

Your cake looks delicious. Love chocolate cake and the addition of mini marshmallows and pecans sound delicious in the frosting. Would definitely melt the marshmallows in with butter and chocolate.

Thank you. I'm sorry you have Crohns. I have diverticulosis so I have to be extra careful. When I eat any nut, which is rarely, I pulverize it chewing. I know it's risky though. Take care of you. Leave the nuts out and enjoy a slice if chocolate cake.

Yes, it must be fresh or it will not do its job. If you want, substitute self rising flour. It has all the levening in it. 😉❤️

Hi Karen Rhonda here again I wanted to ask you if I could try something with your icing for your shhet cake. I wanted to try the pecans crushed pretzels and carmel sauce instead of peanut butter I think it would be like stephanie's turtles on top of the cake guilding the lily maybe but I think it good for christmas. My granddaughters love the turtles.
