@LocaliLLocano piston guns tend to be front-heavy. I'd prefer the shorter barrel in the video (especially if it still has the accuracy claim) to save on weight once attaching a suppressor.
@@MarkyMan316 I’m aware of that setup with piston guns. I use the sig 716 which is already front heavy for my 762 nato precision shooting setup. Part of me is just thinking maybe I should go back to AR10 DI at 20 inches.

Yes .005" over bullet diameter. The .22-250 was similarly accurate. I won my first IPSC rifle match with the AUG. People don't give Steyr the credit they deserve. Their rotary hammer-forged barrels are the best. Frequently outshooting purpose made benchrest units.
Always great to see you in the Germany Austria Italy region, James! Would an on range comparison video between this and the HK G28 be possible ? Would be spectacular !
As a former 11b I love this rifle it has everything I've always wanted in a 308 ar all bitches and gripes are gone love the folding stock love the charging handle. Great purpose built rifle
I love the smaller footprint. I have a few Ar10 's with Gibbz uppers and Phase 5 bolt release. Carbon barrel keeps the weight down. But the smaller footprint is something that I haven't been able to solve without a law tactical adapter.
Piston operated rifles are not losing much in accuracy department anymore. I have czech made ar with short stroke and i would claim it to be sub to moa shooter in any given day.
4:51 I find the AUG safety superior to the AR safety for one reason. I can turn the safety on and off with less trigger hand movement. Switching to fire can be done by pressing the safety with your palm while your finger is on the trigger. It’s perfect 👌
..you can literally flip the ar safety with your thumb while squeezing the trigger. Unless you lost your thumb then yeah probably but that's a pretty important distinction.
in all honesty it would be REALLY useful to see an AUG with a new bolt, barrel ( with heavy options) and modified lower designed to take 300 win mag ammo as a DMR. The AUG is quite accurate to begin with so in a 300 win mag set up with a 20 inch barrel in a bullpup would be ideal
Steyr to Sig Spear: move on over, we're taking over. Don't need any allegedly " hookers and blow," for this. Just James in his short shorts. And no funky rear charging handle combo. Sheesh come on Sig.

Add .7" to the current barrel and pin and weld a specific muzzle break on it to make it 16" overall but still at least get close to the original 13" barrel length? Pull the stock off and import it as a pistol with the current 13" barrel? Or maybe gun owners can stop being lazy and we can start a REAL push to remove suppressors and barrel length restrictions from the NFA since the conditions for actually achieving that are probably as good as they will ever be come Jan 20th.
Import 13 and 16 inch models as pistols. Then we get all the austrian goodness. Owners can add a brace or stock themselves and worry with registration if it still applies. Or add a Steyr designed brace with a cheek piece .

Interesting but that lip on the mag well is a possible problem. I like to use the Magpul drum magazine for the .308 and so far, any lower with a non-standard design around the magwell, does not work.
It is how square the barrel flange is to the upper that helps accuracy..It is the how well the bolt is lapped to the locking lugs, crown, gas block/muzzle device is attached to the barrel and the barrel quality that effects the AR accuracy..Not hard to make an AR accurate. Oh yea, one more thing, stick with the internal piston if accuracy is the main objective..
@hairydogstail im not experienced with piston driven platforms but seeing that most dmrs are trending that way, i assume that its the way to go. From building my own rifles it seems obvious to me that the standard ar barrel extension/barrel nut assembly is the weak link. As far as lapping the barrel to mount flush with the reciever, i am starting to think that machining out either the lip of the barrel extension or the face of the receiver extension to essentially make a tripod would be the best way to go. Think a 3 legged stool vs sitting on a round barrel, the stool will be more stable. I haven't tried it yet, so its just a theory, i really just waiting for someone to make a steel upper that threads onto the barrel like a bolt action, that will solve the problem easily, at the expense of weight and modularity, but its a dmr, who cares.

@hairydogstail yea, i dont know about the piston driven system. Lapping does ok for accuracy but what im getting at is that theres too much play between the barrel and receiver and therefor your barrel and optic. It may feel secure in your hand but with the shock of recoil and abuse its just no consistent enough. Most standard ar barrel nuts leave to much to be desired as far as creating a repeatable platform shot after shot, and the anti rotation tab introduces torque to the gas tube->gas block->barrel. Its just a poor design. Some manufacturers have redesigned ther barrel nut and that has helped a lot. Jp for instance, although they essentially glue it down with red locktite. This rifle has redesigned the barrel /receiver junction, though not truly monolithic, he says the barrel is not quick change like most ars, and i assume that is where their improved accuracy is coming from.
