I live in CA and am in the gun shop 1 or 2 times a week, and literally every single time I'm in there, someone is buying the Gen3 Glock. We have very few alternatives to the G19. If Ruger sold this in CA, it would definitely sell.
Ruger has always been a solid company and always made great products for the price. It's only the young newbies that think ruger has little credibility. In my opinion NOBODY under 25 has any credibility.
GEISLER DEFENCE looks way better and cheaper and you can just pick your own slide for 200 and buy a 30 dollar flat trigger and trigger bar etc. all for $280
$499 MSRP means it'll be $399 within a year unless something crazy happens. Ruger stuff tends to get pretty cheap when the hype wears off. Heck you can often get an LCP Max for $250 and the MSRP for that was $449. And that was easily the best pocket pistol on the market until the Bodyguard 2.0 came out.
I went to Ruger's website and did a deep dive into this pistol and found it to be exceptionally well specd out. Usually, Ruger polymer pistols are not rated as +P compatible, which was one of the concerns I had first viewing this pistol. I am happy to report that this collaboration has rendered a pistol that is NATO, US, SAAMI, and CIP capable to include factory manufactured +P ammunition. It does state that +P+ is off the table as it could result in damage, injury, and voiding of the warranty. The other thing that I was curious about was if grip modules were already in swing and if so how much were they. You can get them from magpul directly for under 40 bucks and are said to ship with 2 magazines and already loaded up with magazine release and springs. If that was not a typo it has to be one of the best bargains going for a grip module package ever. I am thoroughly impressed by what I have seen in the few review videos and by what I have been able to research on my own in the past two hours. One review demonstrated the trigger pull weight with a Lyman digital scale at consistent 3.5 lb. pulls which is a significant improvement over any stock Glock trigger and even some aftermarket upgraded models. For this I say good show Ruger. What I found to be even more amazing is that even with this being a Fire Control Insert chassis system, Glock gen 3 fire group components and aftermarket components are still compatible. That makes fine tuning the fire arm to your liking very accessible with already existing components on the market; again, big kudos to Magpul and Ruger for not making these Fire Control Inserts out of proprietary componentry. Now, if Magpul makes a 19x sizes grip frame for this system then the RXM will literally meet all the specifications that Glock did not meet for the military trials. I personally like the Glock 19x format and own a Tisas Gen 3 Duty because it is built on that format of the G19 4" barrel with the full G17 size grip. I just cannot get used to the Glock grip angle and this RXM fixes that issue. Now it may just be me but I have seen thousands of shooting videos of the Glock 19 models over the years and I would almost argue that the RXM shoots a bit flatter than a Glock. From the shooting videos I have seen it looks as though the RXM produces more of a push back recoil than a muzzle rise recoil impulse. If this is not a misperception it would be a very welcomed advancement to an already relatively flat shooting platform. Furthermore if that is the case then I hope that Ruger and Magpul will offer up different caliber configurations in the future such as 10mm, 40 s&w, and 45 acp. Maybe not so much 40 s&w as it is not a very hot commodity anymore, but 10mm and 45 acp are still popular. If this series of pistols grabs traction and works out it may very well be the epitome of the perfect Glock, as it is everything that a current Glock pistol should be innovatively. Wonder if there will be backstrap and side grip panel modularity in the future? If any American manufacturer can pull off such a feat and keep it affordable Magpul and Ruger could. Great to see more options coming to market and from well established and trusted manufacturers.
I’ve never been a big fan of Ruger’s centerfire pistols. The American series, SR series and P series never really impressed me. I’m glad Ruger is doing something different by doing something plain.
My American compact seems indestructible, but it's a 3" barrel and 12 round default capacity and still manages to weigh 7 ounces more than my P99. It feels fine in the hand, balance is nice, grip shape and master grip interface are nice, the fat, blocky shape calls up associations with my USP, but I'm not a fan of the position of the safety. The slide lock does not reliably engage, and will not engage at all with two of my four magazines. When I got the gun, there was drill kerf inside the striker channel causing intermittent light strikes. Like one out of three rounds or worse just wouldn't fire. I fixed that by disassembling the slide and cleaning it by flushing it with contact cleaner and then compressed air. I attempted to fix the slide lock issue by disassembling the frame to remove the slide lock lever for adjustment, but to my dismay, Ruger says it requires special tools not available to the consumer for reassembly. THey helpfully offered to fix it and then have a look at the slide lock issue. They said they were unable to duplicate the problem though. Still, cost me nothing. Like the USP, it's overweight, under capacity, probably indestructible, but suffering weight penalties as a result. I've been trying to re-sell it to buy more mags and a proper tritium sight set for my P99, but nobody seems to want to buy it.
I have a real love/hate thing with Ruger's pistols. My P89 is something I had always wanted to own, it's fun to shoot. It's also like carrying an ingot of lead on my belt. Security-9 is a nice gun to shoot and carry, but the slide finish is sub par and it just feels a bit cheap. Ruger has done a good job of positioning itself as the common man's, Ford F-150 type, gun maker. But almost too good a job-- they're leaning a little too much into the lower end, in my opinion, and risk coming off as cheap brand-- which I do not want to see happen. I own many Rugers. I'm a Ruger fan-boy. I love my Blackhawk, Mini-14 (stainless), Redhawk (stainless), SR-1911 (stainless) and, of course, 10/22 (stainless-- notice a trend?). Give me this pistol with it's stainless internals, add a matte stainless slide, option for a manual safety, the ability and factory training materials to detail strip it (which Ruger is loathe to do), AND if I can shoot it well, it would happily replace my Glocks.
@@My-Name-Isnt-Important my thoughts exactly, dude. I think Ruger would sell way more rifles if it took stanag mags. If Ruger doesn’t wanna put the engineering/development investment in to make that work, I’d accept mini-14 PMAG’s as an viable substitute…assuming they’d cost less than the ridiculous $42/ea that Ruger sells their mags for.
Ruger stuff tends to get pretty cheap over time. You can find an LCP Max for $250 rather frequently and that's a $449 MSRP. Give it a year and I'm sure it will be getting into that ballpark.
@@NoodleMcGee yeah true. Drop shippers like Dahlonega will likely get into the ballpark at least, probably before too long though. They tend to be fine making a few bucks ($20-30) per sale and just doing large volume.
@NoodleMcGee That's right out the gates. As they pay off tooling and continue mass producing I bet it goes down. LCP Max was $449 MSRP and I somewhat regularly see the stainless model hitting $250
Yeah that's why I got the stainless version of the LCP Max. That has been great though. I have sweated all over that gun and have had it subjected to a lot of less than ideal conditions. I clean it probably twice a year and it basically looks like it did the day I bought it. I'm probably trading it in for a bodyguard 2.0 soon, but that's purely for the huge upgrade with ergonomics. The Max has been a great little gun.
@melissasmess2773 I got to mess with one in my LGS the other day and it's just a matter of scraping the cash together at this point. It's SO much better feeling in the hand.

Why would they? During the world wars pretty much every firearm company made 1911’s for the military. Some of the most popular are rare ones made by sewing machine companies and others that never produced firearms before too.
@@KennethReed-j8r "Why would they?" Because if a 1911-type pistol isn't a Colt it's a clone, obviously. "During the world wars pretty much every firearm company made 1911’s for the military." So? Those clones were authorized by Colt as part of the agreement Colt made with the US military. Colt retained exclusive rights to manufacture the commercial version (the Colt Government Model) while authorizing other companies to make them under military contract. Colt held all the patents (which have long since expired of course). Also, other than Colt, the only two gun companies that made (and delivered) USGI M1911s or M1911A1s were Ithaca and Remington UMC. Everyone else was either not a gun company or not a company at all. That's not exactly "pretty much every firearm company," is it? "Some of the most popular are rare ones made by sewing machine companies and others that never produced firearms before too." Only one sewing machine company made them (Singer; 500 of them).
Never heard of this gun before today when I got an email from Bud's with this gun on sale for $399. Saw the frame was Magpul (love my Magpul 1911 grip panels) and had to learn more. Looks like a great alternative to a G-19.

It makes a lot of sense for big names to offer cheaper glocks with good triggers. Even if there isnt other options for grips, buying two or three spare grips and painting some, or stippling one or cutting one down to a smaller size or doing any sort of DIY gives you options as well.
Agree. Big boys like Ruger, Smith or so on they might need to consider bringing back some of their iconic firearms and modernize them. These days EVERYBODY is just clone/copying each other ever since Glock Gen 3 patent expired.
I don't think they could do it without undercutting Beretta 92s and CZ75s. If a P series isn't any cheaper whats the point when da/sas with more prestigeous Military Service history exist for the same money.
This will be a success, might be a bit pricy for a gen 3-like but it’s got lots of name brand recognition. And the only thing you can’t completely change on a Glock is the polymer grip, but imagine getting a steel or aluminum and the only way to do that is this. For the optic you can always get a plate or swap the slide completely
"I doubt PSA is going to suffer much selling their Glock clones… after all there are 43,000 housing communities in the United States, so PSA has a very wide customer base that has never seen $500 in one place at the same time." Ow, what a burn, I felt that.

I've been a fan of Ruger products since the mid-1990s when my dad bought me my first 10/22. I've not been a fan of some of the choices Ruger has made. But I'm excited to see them come out with this. The chassis system might not really make any sense. However, I've never liked the idea of a piece of plastic being my frame even though I've never had a Glock break on me. It's definitely an attractive feature that if I did break the frame somehow I can swap it out. And using the Glock magazines is a given at this point.
Thank you for an excellent video James. Leave it to Ruger and Magpul to make a better Glock than Glock. Glock hasn't been very innovative for many years
Years ago, I took the position that Glock was the AK of handguns. Today, I realized that I was wrong. It's the AR of handguns. Everybody and their dog are making Glocks and Glock parts. And if you're not making Glocks and Glock parts, what are you even doing with your life?
It's an amalgamation of the last 25 years of striker fired pistols with Magpul support right from the start. Seems well thought out. With the right execution they could take a nice chunk of the Glock clone market and maybe Sig as well.
This looks like a lot of features for the price point as long as it has gen 3 Glock reliability. I particularly like the fact that the slide is direct milled and the grip angle and texture looks nice. I’m seeing them for 4 hundo currently.
Two manufacturers now using the Strike industries optics mounting system for optics. Even the slide on this one is simular. Purchased my Strike Ind. Slide around six years ago. They were ahead of the curve. This Ruger is a no brainer to be a purchase. They always are top notch for quality and price points.
The Ruglock will sell well in the budget tier, and there are interesting opportunities with the serialized trigger frame. It's so much better than the American pistol.
Just bought a blem PSA Dagger frame for $39.99 plus tax and shipping ($51 total) so it's going to be tough to beat that deal. We'll see how good the trigger is.
@ cool you found one I can go and find negative reviews about Glock, kimber, dog etc. fact is I have had and still own Glock and daggers and it’s a great gun one I enjoy more than Glock. It’s ok if there are other guns out there besides Glock.
I see a lot of comments talking about a pdw chassis for this pistol. I'm going in a different direction and I'm going to ask Ruger/Magpul to please consider developing a subcompact version of this gun for everyday carry, CCW license holders! Yes, I am well aware that there is already a plethora of options out there. But the idea of an affordable, American made gun that operates like a Glock, but with an improved trigger, that gets me very excited!
@@brentmansfield1289 I did product testing for PSA, I've got a Dagger with about 13k rounds through it on my workbench. It's got all Glock OEM internals but the stock slide and frame, most of the PSA parts failed by 10k rounds. For the same price you can get a used glock 19 and not worry about the barrel rifling stripping out or striker tips breaking within 1000rds
@@SuspiciousGanymede I’ve always been hesitant to buy any used gun (unless it’s from someone I know) because how do I know that 10k rounds hasn’t already been shot through it? I see your point though and I have seen videos where the striker is prone to failing after a couple thousand rounds. I’ll buy Glock oem parts when/if they fail. Both are just range toys anyway
@@SuspiciousGanymedeidk someone telling me the parts on a 300 dollar gun lasted 10k rounds sounds pretty good. Toss in the fact that Glock oem parts are cheap and plentiful kinda helps too. I have owned Glocks and daggers and, while the Glock was nicer, particularly the barrel, I’ve never fallen in love with the design; it works but I feel it is overpriced given other reliable options.
First review of the gun I've seen for the record. I have one of the original style Ruger P95 polymer framed guns, pre stippling on the frame. I like the gun a lot and didn't pay a whole lot for it new in 1997. I've always thought about getting a Glock, but I might go for one of these instead.
To date, I haven't seen a Gen 3 clone that's got my attention like this one. I started my "carry life" with a (then) brand new Ruger P95 & I've owned other excellent Rugers like my 2" Security Six, so I know they're stuff is quality. And then the fact that Magpul's involved... Very cool!

Smart to collaborate with Magpul. Ruger has a good rep, but Magpul gives it some “professional user” cred I imagine
Ruger has always been a solid company and always made great products for the price. It's only the young newbies that think ruger has little credibility. In my opinion NOBODY under 25 has any credibility.

$399 and maybe it would have my interest
GEISLER DEFENCE looks way better and cheaper and you can just pick your own slide for 200 and buy a 30 dollar flat trigger and trigger bar etc. all for $280
That's the price at Rural King today
yes $500 is too much
$499 MSRP means it'll be $399 within a year unless something crazy happens.
Ruger stuff tends to get pretty cheap when the hype wears off. Heck you can often get an LCP Max for $250 and the MSRP for that was $449. And that was easily the best pocket pistol on the market until the Bodyguard 2.0 came out.
MSRP.
It’ll be $350-$375. That should still be inexpensive enough for everyone.
You forgot the Ruger SR1911. I have a couple of them and they are very nice and work well.
P series is chunky and a leaves a little to be desired in terms of trigger...but they are tanks that shoot well forever
The mark 4 standard bro thats a really nice ass .22lr frankly. Its really like one of the .22lr of all time.
Sure, Magpul will do this but they wont make PMAGs for the mini-14…
Agreed!!!! Probably a ruger issue though. Either way, make it happen for us.
A Magpul 'TAPCO gen 2'!!!
Ruger should change the Mini-14, and allow it to accept stanag mags. It's ridiculous that they keep it proprietary.
43,000 "mobile homes" 🤣🤣🤣 If these street price at $300-$350ish I'm down for one.
Ruger stuff tends to get pretty cheap over time. You can find an LCP Max for $250 rather frequently and that's a $449 MSRP.
Give it a year and I'm sure it will be getting into that ballpark.
It’s dropping at $399 street price so it’ll probably drop into that range before too long.
I've heard from a dealer that the wholesale price is $340 at the moment, so it'll probably be a minute before the street price drops
S&B range ammo is a personal favorite. Great review and spot on with the critique on color options.
You are the first (and only so far) person to review this pistol. Good job being first to the table. 👍👍
Actually guntalk same day
I just pray the finish on the slide is much better than all of Ruger pistols
Yeah that's why I got the stainless version of the LCP Max. That has been great though. I have sweated all over that gun and have had it subjected to a lot of less than ideal conditions. I clean it probably twice a year and it basically looks like it did the day I bought it.
I'm probably trading it in for a bodyguard 2.0 soon, but that's purely for the huge upgrade with ergonomics. The Max has been a great little gun.
@@TheDarksideFNothing you'll never carry the LCP again after you buy the new Smith and Wesson 🤤

@KennethReed-j8r just kidding. I guess, for you, I should have said ARs.
@@KennethReed-j8r "Why would they?"
Because if a 1911-type pistol isn't a Colt it's a clone, obviously.
"During the world wars pretty much every firearm company made 1911’s for the military."
So? Those clones were authorized by Colt as part of the agreement Colt made with the US military. Colt retained exclusive rights to manufacture the commercial version (the Colt Government Model) while authorizing other companies to make them under military contract. Colt held all the patents (which have long since expired of course).
Also, other than Colt, the only two gun companies that made (and delivered) USGI M1911s or M1911A1s were Ithaca and Remington UMC. Everyone else was either not a gun company or not a company at all. That's not exactly "pretty much every firearm company," is it?
"Some of the most popular are rare ones made by sewing machine companies and others that never produced firearms before too."
Only one sewing machine company made them (Singer; 500 of them).

It makes a lot of sense for big names to offer cheaper glocks with good triggers. Even if there isnt other options for grips, buying two or three spare grips and painting some, or stippling one or cutting one down to a smaller size or doing any sort of DIY gives you options as well.
I'll pass. Ruger needs to bring back a much thinner and improve P- series of P- 90 and 95 hammered fired pistols.
don't forget the P97
I have a P-89 that works quite well. I love it.
A modern P89 would be cool
