UFC proved this wrong 20 years ago against a wide variety of striking arts. There are legitimate takedown defenses, if you want to defend a takedown you need to learn and practice them
Dwight Childress ts easier for some people than others, For example Jose Aldo has amazing takedown defense cause hes so explosive and bounces right back up, Im also like that but i have problems in other places
In a real fight outside the controlled MMA environment. A strike to the back of the head or the lungs (back) will neutralized most grapplers take down attempts... Still this video is not that best technic to counter an advanced grappler... I see that the BJJ and wrestlers give their back too much in the MMA fights...
All this time I've been doing my double-leg takedowns wrong. I didn't realize I was supposed to collapse into a heap just before making contact with my opponent. Thanks for the tip!
***** Sorry, but you NEVER lean over when you do a Jiu Jitsu take down. You keep posture - straight back, neck and head... That's just the first point... Can't take this seriously when the takedown is completely wrong!
Strange that in all my years in the marines, after submission grappling, as well as takedowns (wrestling, judo, etc) was incorporated due to the proven effectiveness in actual combat, they never thought to include this... which has made everything I've learned completely useless. I've also apparently been wasting my time training outside the military at all these BS MMA, BJJ, and Sambo schools. Thank you for opening my eyes.
Non practitioner here, I was however raised in a rough area. I can say that in all my years I have never seen anyone charge for the hips. In an actual fight a trained bjj guy would pop your head off.
Yes, that's exactly how a double leg works... head down, drop to the ground, lose all your momentum, go limp. Yup, nothing wrong with any of these "takedowns".
No one goes directly for a TAKE-DOWN, first you have to distract your opponent. But if you don't distract your opponent something similar like this may really happen :D
first off, the attacker has terrible technique. Second if you don't sprawl during a double leg take down defense...you're gonna get put on your butt. And third, if you baby punched me in the ear 3 times, I'd only get mad and break something instead of putting you to sleep.
NEVER EVER put your head down during a double leg takedown. Seriously bad technique and if I got punched in the ear like that I would make sure to choke the person out even harder
Those fast "baby punches" are held back, they are actually the equivalent of a heavy jab. Those punches are not to necessarily to injure an opponent, but more to cause them to guard their head, so the body can be worked with heavier punches.
Douglas Hansen no! to be the equivalent of a HEAVY jab there would have to be bodyweight pushed into the punch, upperbody twist and rotation of the hand at the end. those freakin wc chainpunches are the equivalent of a very, very weak punch....this is basic physics ffs ^^
I'm a student of Wing Chun, I think it is great for dealing with certain types of attacks, and this would probably work fine against your typical angry frat boy douchebag or drunk, but not someone actually skilled in BJJ. This is a naive fantasy. I'm not saying WC does not have methods which could be used to counter this (most likely involving getting the fuck out of the way and not letting them get your legs to begin with), but this is a joke.
Good analysis. My trouble with Wing tsun was the that I felt I would have to commit a lot of time to bring something tangible or use able from each lesson. BJJ was awesome and clearly works in the ring or on one on one scenario's. My favourite for me has been Krav Maga. After each lesson I feel like I have learnt a skill useable skill. The military influence as means that it helps with a wide range of attacks. Definitely recommend trying KM out.
Every art has it's advantages and disadvantages, and I'm surprised this debate as to which skill is superior is still taking place. We live in a world where we can just learn and incorporate other arts to make ourselves better and more well rounded "artist". We are not bound by blind loyalty, distance, and mysticism any longer. Bruce Lee saw the limitations of WC and hence JKD was born. I'm sure Bruce saw the limitations of JKD and were he still be alive BJJ would undoubtedly be a part of JKD. It actually is in the JKD Concepts crowd. Why try to make WC or Karate or Boxing "better" than BJJ? Why not instead make your self better by learning BJJ?
Well put ***** Although I didn't say which was better I have done all three and Krav Maga was my personal fav although not so much an art. Very messy looking!
Absorb what is useful reject what is useless and made it your own. As what Doug Mcguff would say the human body like combat is always dynamic never static. Combat is like the human body.
I would like to see you try these 5 responses to BJJ with a true BJJ practitioner (any Gracie, or Drydale, etc). So you know, I trained Wing Chun for over 6 years (Lo Man Kam lineage), and I have studied Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over 2 years, and your 5 responses to BJJ WILL NOT work...unless being applied to someone who knows very little or absolutely nothing about BJJ. The only reason I chose to respond is... I don't want someone getting hurt because they believe these techniques will work. I mean no disrespect and I wish you the best of luck. Take care...
If you guys can make ANY of those "defences" work, I'd like to know. I would like to see one of you guys at a BJJ Academy - any academy, really - taking the Gracie Challenge. Really. And put it on tape.
Money talks, bullsheet walks. Put it up in the cage for money and test your skills in the real world. If you use the excuse that we don't fight for money, no problem, fight for free. I am close to 100% certain even an average amateur MMA fighter will spank you.
Those were all very weak wrestling double leg attempts. I think Joe Rogan put it best when he said something along the lines of "...it's hard for people from traditional martial arts to accept they spent years and years of their lives learning an art that is useless." Not an exact quote, but you get the point. Dan Inosanto himself told Erik Paulson, for example, "Go train with the Brazilians.", because he was humble enough to know they were on to something. This "sifu" should start training, as a white belt, at a good BJJ school, and learn an art that really works. But his ego would never let him, obviously.
I agree. The problem is that any really good ma don't feel the need to prove which is better in stupid contests like this. BJJ has its place just like many other forms of martial arts. Not all of the. Are for competitive fighting. Some are paradoxically more for ones mental fortitude.
Totally agree, if he wants to prove something there are a lot of championships where he can do this, prove as Royce Gracie did instead of saying , do it.
ok, humor aside. I would like to look at this without being mean to either side. first, I've been in Bjj and MMA and I've seen white belts shoot in better than that. Now I'm not judging, my shoot sucked so I'm not tossing stones here, just a observation. that rolling slappy thing could maybe work if applied for real and not just a tappy tappy thing like he was doing. With the right amount of force and intent a half dozen punches in a mere moment would make for a bad day. Plus you have to look at this as if the shoot is done by someone who doesn't know how to shoot (not hard to do there) I mean how many punks in the street really have a clue of how to do that sort of stuff. Yes, to some this is funny, to others it is embarrassing and to even others it may look legit. The real key to any comment on martial arts is we all need to stop downing others and accept there are other ways of doing things than our own particular chosen ways. Of course we all think our way is best but there really isn't a "best" way for us all. maybe, just maybe that works for him weather it would for the rest of us is just opinion, until we are faced with it, for real.
Everything - even absolute shit - looks effective when you are using a compliant partner. If you really think this would stop a takedown from an uncooperative opponent, I think there's a great way for you to put your beliefs to the test if you really wanted to test yourself.
The title should be "Wing Tsun: 5 responses to street toughs who use MMA take downs" BJJ isn't known for it's take downs, unless you are talking about guys from the old Carlson Gracie team who used them in Vale Tudo matches. BJJ today isn't about Vale Tudo, or MMA, it's about sport matches where they often don't worry about take downs, they just pull guard. Now, I've seen videos of tough guys trying these tactics, probably because they saw them on the UFC. Those are who this would work on. Don't advertise fighting against another art, unless you regularly train with them. You don't really know.
Sprawl THEN strike. All you need to to defend a double leg is a sprawl, cow catcher and strong whizzer. Now that we've cleared that up, you can start on the single leg, drop seoi nage, hip toss, inside trip, outside trip, osoto gari, uchi mata, harai goshi, suplex, lateral drop, fireman throw, ankle pick and foot sweeps.
why all these guys don't step in the cage to prove their points against a trained and non cooperative opponent. Go against a decent amateur wrestler or MMA an demonstrate that he can't take you down. Just once, for the sake of argument, no need to start to compete. All those are just cheap scripted advertising, proving exactly zero. Bad attempts of takedown anyway and bad techniques against to.
Ummmm yea, I guess these shinanigans would work if the attacker does the takedown completely wrong, from 5 feet away, with improper leg head and hand positioning, and then just stops when he reaches the guys legs instead of following through lol lol. Always hilarious when "Wing Tsun" clowns think they have an answer to an attack, yet its impossible because they clearly have no clue how the attack is even done correctly.
Okay, well, that's nice if the dill doing the BJJ is a wing chun guy. That's not a BJJ/wrestling takedown, that's a Wing Chun takedown trying to look like one. Why not get a wrestler or BJJ guy to do it? You will NOT stop the shot like this against ANYONE who knows how to do it. Everything is wrong in this one! This kind of thing is so stupid.
Funny. I would like to see him really demonstrate some Wing Chun as i'm a big fan of traditional arts but this has to be joke right. Its amazing how he kept a str8 face the whole time. Keep them coming
Man...too bad there isn't a group of people, or maybe even an entire family, that would be willing to put their reputations on the line to see whether or not this crazy Jiu Jitsu stuff really works in a live no holds barred scenario.
That is the poorest excuse for a shot that I've ever seen. No decent grappler would ever shoot bent over with their head down let alone seven feet away. This is a ridiculous display of a takedown by someone who obviously knows nothing about jiu jitsu. Why must this wing tsun instructor insult BJJ to elevate his own martial art? Can it be a lack of confidence?
well... i think those wing tsun punches are very short movement.. so, if the guy he is fighting has more resitance, i do not think he will fall so easily... just if wing tsun hit on right places on face, head or neck.
Ingenuo: Te crees que un luchador de BJJ va a entregarse atado de manos como aparece en este video? Me encantaria saber que harias si te tocara luchar como un luchados como Toquinho?
This is why any grappler who is worth a damn is taught to explode through a take down or switch to another technique or create distance to restart. Not make contact and stop to hug their opponent's legs.
Hey guys this is for demonstration only, kind of like Aikido. That stuff only works if the guy is as strong as a 60 year old drunk dude and is so helpless but to get thrown around like a 5 year old child. A sleepy 5 year old child. So don't let this upset you. You guys should be making jokes about this because there is no way you should take this serious.
The above video illustrates clearly the problem with Wing Chun and many other traditional martial arts. The demo uses really poor interpretations of the double leg take down in all three versions of the defense. The feedback, while high speed is very limited in terms providing any real stimulus to learn any better technique. If a guy doesn't know how to perform a double leg he probably won't come in this way and if he does then the given responses will get you dumped because your center of gravity remains unbalanced near the shoulders of the aggressor. It's ridiculous.
These are not takedowns. The attacker is simply reaching for the defender's legs having practically no momentum. I urge this same Wing Tsun guy to try the same defenses at any high school wrestling room. The kids will tear him up. He has no idea of what a real wrestling/bjj takedown looks like.
Seriously Wing Tsun? Hahhaaaaaa! That is ridiculous! The only grappler that shoots in like that is someone that knows nothing at all. Get real and stop trying to give your art more credit than it deserves. I am sure your art is good for certain situations but takedown defense should be left to BJJ and wrestling.
In a "street" setting it becomes deadly for the wing chun practicioner. It's simply not distinguishable from other simpler arts or even just self defense once you go into generic pressure point attacking and shit once you find that your main base has failed. A proper and direct takedown would be the end of a wing chun practicioner taught to punch fast all the time.
In real life take downs are not safe to go for unless you see a serious opening for it. I thought I paralyzed the last guy that tried to take me down n it took less energy than any of this. Elbow to the spine. Quick, easy, ends fight instantly.
I've never seen anyone in MMA or UFC utilize Wing Chun specifically in their fights. Usually, it's some type of stand up combined with Juijitsu on the ground. The common denominator in all of MMA is that every fighter must have at the very minimum some juijitsu to compete at just about any level. I'm not knocking Wing Chun, as it seems this video is trying to knock Juijitsu...but the title is more aptly against wrestling take-downs. If they wanted to make it against juijitsu they would've started on the ground.
That's it!. I'm quitting BJJ and going to WC. I've been doing it all wrong. Let's let this guy fight a blue belt, a purple belt, or someone that actually does BJJ and try that chain punch crap...u can't chain punch when ur on ur back trying not to get armbar'd or put to sleep. :)
I can't belive that myself and the thousands of people that have fought or trained MMA have yet to add these techniques to our toolboxes. UFC 1-5 alone dispels this.
not a single BJJ takedown was attempted that day
+mrcain Does not even look like a football tackle
agree
"Absolutely. Charging into someone and rolling over is not a takedown."
UFC proved this wrong 20 years ago against a wide variety of striking arts. There are legitimate takedown defenses, if you want to defend a takedown you need to learn and practice them
Totally agree! i think defending from takedowns is one of the most difficult things in MMA/BJJ
It is always who can make it happen when the sit hits the fan regardless of the art or style, respect the enemy and be fearless.
Dwight Childress ts easier for some people than others, For example Jose Aldo has amazing takedown defense cause hes so explosive and bounces right back up, Im also like that but i have problems in other places
You have developed legit techniques be well.

All this time I've been doing my double-leg takedowns wrong. I didn't realize I was supposed to collapse into a heap just before making contact with my opponent. Thanks for the tip!
This is an embarrassment. I mean, really in this day and age people are still deluded as in the 80's and 90's?
Agreed
THAT WAS ONLY THREE RESPONSES! I want my money back.
How to defend yourself against someone who runs across the room, trips, and grabs your legs for support...
still waiting for a bjj takedown..
I want one of them chain-punch massages...
Si recibes golpes en el oído no necesitan ser muy fuertes para dejar fuera de combate a alguien
***** Sorry, but you NEVER lean over when you do a Jiu Jitsu take down. You keep posture - straight back, neck and head... That's just the first point... Can't take this seriously when the takedown is completely wrong!

Sarcasm? LOL.

Yoshi Vu made my day haha
MCMAP is useless.
What about Dim mak? ;)
Can we do this video again but with me attempting the takedowns?

Hm... so... why did wing tsun never win a gracie challenge ?
Looks like he is giving him a head and shoulders massage
It is NOT a take down. It is just a man running and other punching him. It is a shame.
Reminds me of the time when Napoleon Dynamite took martial arts lessons
Geeeeeze
looked like a boxer's takedown. find someone that actually trains using takedowns.

Who shoots in like that? LOL
Bjj guys.
People that shouldn't be fighting in the first place.
GBDazzler I think you meant bj guys. . . cos that was a guy shoot
DNinja1986 Bjj guys. I've seen plenty with wrestling on that level.

Slappy hands with frosted hair/prison jump suit wins every time BETTER RUN GRACIE CLAN!
I like both Wing Chun and Jij-Jitsu and this video makes both styles look bad lol

I don't think it would take anyone "skilled" in grappling to blow through this "defence".
LOL. Wow. I want some of that kool aid
They should do this again but with my white belt arse doing the double legs.
ok, humor aside. I would like to look at this without being mean to either side. first, I've been in Bjj and MMA and I've seen white belts shoot in better than that. Cute. If the guy in black knew Jujutsu, it would actually be worth watching this clickbait
Now...let's see you do that against Jordan Burroughs or any of the Gracies. Yeah your ass would be on the ground in a heartbeat
fuck that lets see him do that against a high school wrestler
bahahaha so true
Nugmaster224 EXACTLY
or any decent or below average bjj practitioner.
Fuck, now I gotta throw away my belt
Rofl, seems like he's giving him a neck massage rather than punches :D
So funny. He should have his own comedy show.
Everything - even absolute shit - looks effective when you are using a compliant partner. If you really think this would stop a takedown from an uncooperative opponent, I think there's a great way for you to put your beliefs to the test if you really wanted to test yourself.
Kind of amazing that people are still putting stuff like this up.

do you have any sort of defense when he actually gets you down or do you pretty much just give up at that point?
Sprawl THEN strike. All you need to to defend a double leg is a sprawl, cow catcher and strong whizzer.
Now that we've cleared that up, you can start on the single leg, drop seoi nage, hip toss, inside trip, outside trip, osoto gari, uchi mata, harai goshi, suplex, lateral drop, fireman throw, ankle pick and foot sweeps.
I wouldnt trust anyone with hair like that
Does anyone know where I can by the Red/Orange costume that the guy is wearing? Is he wearing Ninja style shoes also?
hilarious! Also impossible. You want to stop a takedown? Then learn to sprawl and get your underhooks in.
why all these guys don't step in the cage to prove their points against a trained and non cooperative opponent. Go against a decent amateur wrestler or MMA an demonstrate that he can't take you down. In the first take down, what is he playing Pati-cake?
please repeat this with a 3 stripes blue belt of BJJ (or higher)...i cant see any BJJ technique

How the fuck has this video got any likes?
Wing tsun practitioners.. Believe or not, there are some :D
I think Helio Gracie is loughing up there...
lmao def is
i dont know about wing tsun but it doesnt look like any of these people know bjj to me
Funny. I would like to see him really demonstrate some Wing Chun as i'm a big fan of traditional arts but this has to be joke right. Its amazing how he kept a str8 face the whole time. Keep them coming
Hey I needed a good laugh, thanks for making this really funny video Mr. Clown sir...Oss!
Man...too bad there isn't a group of people, or maybe even an entire family, that would be willing to put their reputations on the line to see whether or not this crazy Jiu Jitsu stuff really works in a live no holds barred scenario.

More like lack of students I bet. Less people swallowing the Wing Chun Kool-Aid.
Kodiak...love it!
Please, please go find a legit BJJ guy and post video of your fight with him
Please tell me where your gym is. Please.
video should be titled "5 responses to a day-1 white belt's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu takedown"
well... i think those wing tsun punches are very short movement.. so, if the guy he is fighting has more resitance, i do not think he will fall so easily... just if wing tsun hit on right places on face, head or neck.
wow those are some really hardcore moves brother

How does this fuckery still continue to this day??? lol
where are you located? can i come be your uke these vids?
Were any of those pittpatter punches supposed to hurt? Or merely scratch the back of his head?
Guy in black: "Well played, sir."
When nerds fight...
I wish opponents just stopped mid-takedown while trying to take me down too.
"how to beat up people who suck at fighting"
Hey guys this is for demonstration only, kind of like Aikido. It's easy to defend yourself when the attacker's not even trying. I took high school wrestling and I could have slammed this guy across the street.
agree
Is this a start of new comedy series? :D
It has to be right?
The attacker isn't even committed to takedown much less his form is way off. A terrible example.
The above video illustrates clearly the problem with Wing Chun and many other traditional martial arts. The demo uses really poor interpretations of the double leg take down in all three versions of the defense. The feedback, while high speed is very limited in terms providing any real stimulus to learn any better technique. It's ridiculous.
I see the theory, but I don't see him putting it into PRACTICE in a real match.
So basically the one is a wing chun practitioner, and the other guy knows how to fall to his knees and hug a leg... but can he do a takedown?
These are not takedowns. The attacker is simply reaching for the defender's legs having practically no momentum. I urge this same Wing Tsun guy to try the same defenses at any high school wrestling room. The kids will tear him up. He has no idea of what a real wrestling/bjj takedown looks like.
Hahaa. This is a joke. Haha.
Guy in Black: Be a good partner and take him down if you can.
Guy in red: Try that from on your ass.
This is the funniest thing I've seen all day!
This is the best thing I've seen in a long time!
The spirit of the 80s is alive in this one.
The dude's not even trying to take him down. This is bullshit.
I would have dumped this fool on his head. If the double leg doesn't work, switch to the single leg. Dudes a joke.
In real life take downs are not safe to go for unless you see a serious opening for it. I thought I paralyzed the last guy that tried to take me down n it took less energy than any of this. Elbow to the spine. Quick, easy, ends fight instantly.
the guy in black didn't do a proper takedown. This ain't Wing Chun's special defense, it's a guy not even doing the takedown properly.
What is in the guy in the red's hair?
quero ver fazer isso né uma briga com um lutador de Jiu Jitsu mesmo
Lucas Modesto jiu jitsu é luta de gay
Wait..............do we have to quit Jiu Jitsu now? Ahhhh man that sucks.
I can't belive that myself and the thousands of people that have fought or trained MMA have yet to add these techniques to our toolboxes. UFC 1-5 alone dispels this.
When you are in the middle of a fight and you get a massage!
I just jizzed in my pants at the effectiveness of these tecniques
You should just avoid comparing this stuff to real fighting systems. I would choke you and there's nothing you could do about it unless you train bjj.
