  • New York Hot Tracks is a syndicated music television series which aired from 1983 to 1989, and achieved the number one music variety show spot in the United States. Hot Tracks was Executive Produced and Syndicated by M.K. Thomas & Company of Chicago in association with WABC-TV, New York. The sixty-minute weekly series was distributed to more than 110 markets across the country. The show debuted on July 22, 1983, a full week before NBC's Friday Night Videos. The original host was WKTU disc jockey Carlos DeJesus who would introduce the videos from various locations in and around New York City; usually dance nightclubs.
Everybody who was anybody in the music world would venture to New York and, when they did, Hot Tracks was on their "A" list of places to visit. Many music stars actually co-hosted the show when they were in New York. The list included: Tina Turner, Madonna, Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, Anita Baker, David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, Janet Jackson, and many more. This attracted attention of many national sponsors who loyally supported the show. Executive Producers were Michelle K. Thomas, CEO of M. K. Thomas& Company, along with Brooke Johnson, V.P. Programming at WABC-TV, and was deftly Line Produced weekly by David Novarro and Vincent Rubino.

I hear that some people in the hip hop community thought of the Fat Boys as sellouts because they had their own movie, their own marketing company, they made records with The Beach Boys, they had a song featuring Freddy Krueger etc. don’t they know that what the Fat Boys were doing was pushing hip hop into the international market? I guess some wanted to keep it in the hood. They helped popularize hip hop and helped in making it mainstream. They were a global success not just local and they flew the flag for hip hop at a time when it was hardest to do so, the 80s. In doing so they made hip hop what it is today and for that, everyone in hip hop should be grateful to these guys.

We didn't have instant and usually free on-demand access to every song and video ever created. We typically had to wait for our favorite songs to play on the radio or, if you were lucky, try to find them and play them from your cassette tapes (before CDs). Today's generations are absolutely spoiled rotten with access and availability to old gems exactly like this video, so they take them for granted and dismiss them out of hand. These guys no doubt influenced Beastie Boys, Run DMC, MC Hammer, etc. They were pioneers. They took chances. Gotta give them _some_ respect.
