Just suggesting an alternative. Not saying counting threads is wrong. But an easier way for me is counting the turns of the outer tie rod to remove. Well done editing.

Will I need to take it in for an alignment after doing this, if I were to do it myself ?

So if there is a tinging noise while driving could it be the tie rods

Why did you have to replace the inner one? Was it making any noises?

It has play in it … which is causing tire wear and also in longer run play gets bigger and bigger it can come of breaking off

Actually counting treads never works for me. I tried every single time I change inner and and outer.
