It’s so cool seeing a big melee community figure talk about sumo, since I got interested in both around the same time! I hope one day I can bring more exposure to sumo since it really is such a hype watching experience (like melee)
It really would be cool if we had titles for melee in the same vein as GM or IM in chess. A title that doesn't go away with the player's current ranking, but is an indication of having been a top-level player at some point in the game's history.
My shihan spends a lot of time in Japan and he loves sumo, and if he teaches a class at my dojo sometimes he'll have us do sumo. Very fun and quite different from the grappling I was used to. I won one of our "tournaments" and as a prize I got a sumo autograph, which is basically a big piece of paper with the wrestler's hand print. His hand is the size of my head LOL (the wrestler in particular is Goeido Gotaro, he retired a few years ago and peaked at the Ozeki rank)
Sanctuary on netflix is about sumo wrestling and how the stables treat their wrestlers as well as the process of training to make it big in sumo. 12 episodes long and extremely worth the time
YES YES YES. Fighting games and combat sports are a two way street. They can give and take from one another. I learned so much about strategy and prioritizing safety in my approaches and moves in wrestling from fighting games. I learned how to condition my opponents better because of it, and also FGs taught me how to not be afraid to get hit. That last one is a bit weird, as you have to get over getting hit first, but then once you realize how much the fear of getting hit holds back your offense in fighting games you learn you need to discard it. And I'd say I've avoided a lot of brain damage in Muay Thai thanks to Fgs lol
@@powerowl2120 it even got to the point where I was one of the scariest at my dojo LOL almost nobody else was thinking about how to control space, bait, or condition.
Toph it’s been a while since you talked about wobbling in a video and I was wondering your current thoughts on it. I’m an ics main and I think it should stay banned personally.
i was so irritated seeing the word sumo in my recommended but makes total sense hearing you talk about it. such a cool sport and feels absolutely in character for you to tell us about it, that’s some ancient Japanese FGC shit
Definitely check out some vods, this channel called natto sumo uploads all the tournament day vods. Makouchi is the top division so that's what I'd suggest following mostly, the lower divisions (especially juryo) can be a bit more dull do to the fear of losing rank and salary which is unfortunate
were you in Tiburon CA recently? I swear the person in the white shirt in the background here looks just like you: ruclips.net/video/J0dE6QpnFy4/видео.html It would be cool if it happened to be you :o I must know now that it's on my mind
No idea you had gotten married! Congrats Toph!!

A natural discussion for a figure who gained popularity in a Japanese game with the win condition of a ring out
congrats on the marriage my dude!
congratulations on getting married!!! glad to be this early and also to watch a video about sumo, so far out of left field but i'm so down to see it

Wasnt sumo wrestling part of what inspired Sakurai to think of smashbros?

I find E. Honda and Ganryu super fun. I just love seeing a huge, rotund guy just super slapping the shit out of their enemies.
Honda is a blast to play, but it gets really hard around Platinum; since by then people have his gimmicks pretty well solved.
Didn’t know you got married Toph, CONGRATS!!!
Congrats on the marriage Toph :)
Idk how to play a honda, i only know how to drive one...

I think the ranking system for Melee should be just like sumo wrestling cuz, in a nutshell, Smash is a sumo wrestling game.
YES IT IS

Calling Mang0 the GOAT is like calling Tamawashi the GOAT because he is still competing while Hakuho is retired lol.
