Thank you thank you thank you! This video is awesome! I have been devastated for 14 years by a huge community of gophers! It has driven me to tears many times! I have tried everything I could think of. Finally, I talked my husband into building me very expressive screened bottom raised garden beds so we could harvest our food. That hasn't fixed the massive holes ALL over though, so I'm off to your next video to learn how to use your favorite trap. Thank you!

So glad you found this, then, Toni - you sound just like us. Hope this works for you, too! (PS- we had to line our beds with hardware cloth in our last house to keep out voles - field mice - if it's not one, it's another, lol)

Thanks for the laughs. Great video and I’ve had these same experiences with most all the products you’ve shown. They did not work. Just hired a professional gopher capture company who work the farms here in my county and are very successful in catching gophers. You know what they use? The DK trap. One thing the professionals told me is how SMART these varmints are. Go figure.

I tried the road flare the first time I had gopher signs in my front lawn. I sealed off all the holes except the one I put the lit flare in then covered that hole. Within 10 minutes I saw movement at one of the holes and I nailed it with a garden fork used for loosening soil.
    This method worked for me.

What ever happened to the ol' gopher snare idea made with binder twine? Once you snared one, you could do what ever you wanted to do with them.
My favorite pass time growing up on the farm was snaring gophers. I used even go out before church Sunday morning and snare 5 to 10 of them in no time.
I just tied a snare at the end of the binder twine, then looped it around the gopher hole, then i laid flat in the the grass maybe 4 or 5 feet away from the hole, and waited, and when the gopher poked his head out the hole, one quick pull, and i had it snared.
    I loved your video!

Thanks for the laugh, I've been trying all these things also and it is frustrating but after seeing you in the same boat feeling it I feel better now. I'm using everything at once, hitting them form all angles and there will be no peace for these demon gophers until all evidence of them is erased.

I had many successes with the air rifle. Only works when you see a new earth mound coming up, and the digging only lasts about 30 minutes. It won't work if the mound is hours old. Clear the mound to open the tunnel, then wait with the barrel down the tunnel. Usually I only need to wait 10 or 15 minutes, and you need to be quick on the trigger. The pest will dart in the tunnel or throw dirt at the opening. The problem is you don't often see a mound actively coming up. Tried gopher hawk with no success so far.

I enjoyed this video very much because I know your pain! I watched gophers slowly destroy my lawn for 2 years and I tried much of what you tried. I did get rid of them finally, in a way that you wouldn’t believe, but it depended on me being there when the gopher popped up and started eating. What I learned about the gophers in my lawn was (for unknown reasons) they fed at pretty predictable hours in the day. Since I could see them from the house window, I learned what those hours were. So I too bought a pellet gun and feel I could get them next time that way, but that’s not how I killed them at first. If they come back (and I’m sure they will) I’ll use the pellet gun. I learned also what you said about baiting them with peanut butter / seeds/ carrots/ potatoes and was quite surprised they didn’t touch any of it. They seemed not interested in the least. My gophers were feeding on grass and that seemed all they were interested in. Another thing I learned was that they would zip out of their hole, eat grass, and zip (backwards) back in. That means that if I snuck up behind them on their blind side, they didn’t see me! Of course you still had to be very stealthy. This is manually intensive though and wouldn’t work over a large area. But I got the whole colony in my 1/4 acre yard that way. In the future that would be with the pellet gun assist. 😊 I think a lot of the mis-information out on the web exists because there are many varieties of pocket gopher out there and their behavior and sizes are all different.

David Parker Yep, Gopher Hawk has been successful for me. Take a bit of practice and understanding to target “freshies”...fresh mounds. In a 1ac field I got 17 in one month. GH is quick and effective way to kill them. The cost more than most of these other methods/traps but work for me.

I’ve used the black boxes and also only caught one. So, I just resolved to try to coexist with the gophers because it is this hilarious emotional struggle that just takes too much out of you. However, if you care enough about your yard and garden, they will piss you off enough to pull you in. It’s comforting to know we’re all in this struggle together and the good old DK1 is still the best way. I used those when I was a kid when the County gave us $2.50 for gopher feet.

I got 1 a month ago but the coyotes got to it before I did and ran off with the trap and varmint so I lost my only older black box trap. I did borrow one from my neighbor today as I saw 3 new mounds and lo and behold I got one within 2 hours! Loved the rush of that kill, I am embarrassed to say, and set another trap for tonight. We shall see what happens.

  • @mjmoreton

Gopher gassers work as do many other products, but the key is DONT get complacent after you gas, drown or poison them… you have to go around and fill in all their holes with small gravel and tunnel fill and pack them down as deep as you can. Any sign that the gophers left even the old old old holes with spider webs in them, fill them as full as possible and pack it down. After you do all that, you need to inspect your yard for any hints that more have migrated over from your neighbors yard or mama gopher just gave birth to 14 brand new babies because guess what, chances are it’s her 10th litter in only about 7 months.
You gotta stay vigilant in other words and start planting a garden, because you will now have faith in whatever you plant and be proactive not reactive because you fully understand now how these monsters can and will take over again.

    • @AnOregonCottage
      @AnOregonCottage  2 года назад

That's a great tip, Misty! Sadly we have 100s of holes and not enough time to do that, which is probably why we have such a problem, lol. Maybe if we at least do the newer holes - will definitely try this. Thanks!

You’re putting your traps in the wrong places in those early days. You need to find the freshest mound that’ll be one that is dark and moist that means it just happened in the last day or so. You essentially want to try to set the trap right on top of where the Gopher is.
Gophers are vegetarians so they won’t eat sunflower seeds and you don’t need to bait a gopher trap if you set it correctly. The gophers eat roots and green plants. You bought a gun and you’re gonna sit in the yard oh my gosh dude you are in trouble you are desperate. Congratulations you finally figured it out. You’re finding the tunnels and you’re setting the trap correctly. One thing you didn’t mention so in case you’re not doing this you need to level out Gopher mounds so that you will notice when a new one comes up and then you go to that one and set your traps it also will allow you to get a better idea of how many Gopher you actually have. Don’t waste your time on old mounds that are dried out because that Gopher is not there anymore you have to find the new mounds. The dirt will be darker and moist for a day or two.

When you shot the one by the house did you leave his dead body in the tunnel? Leave a message for the others. The hardest thing about shooting them is you need to get them to come up, sometimes opening the hole will make them come, if its a tunnel they are using then crushing it down might drive them up, its probably the most fun way, but least effective if you have lots and lots.
