I bought a Merry Tiller in 1979 that looked like that. I put it in car trunk to make gardens for friends. Back then they were made in Marysville WA with Sheffield steel tynes from GB.
Great little machine they are. I still have mine. It originally had 6 tines on it and good hefty ones too , not like the flimsy little ones you see today 😢. I lost the two outside ones so now only have 4. The little briggs 3hp engine was well able for the 6 which you never see now, but unfortunately it gave up, so i put a Honda clone on it. A 5hp one. It goes great but its harder on juice.
Cheers vegging out. managed to get it going with easy start and it’s done what I needed it to do. Pulled the plug out and there’s lots of rubbish in there to. Something to look at one spare afternoon. Good bot of kit though Cheers
Thank IVE have a merry mine had a 3 hp I installed a 6.75 hp on it do you know of the year mine is just like yours I put tube tires on the back I never know about running it with out the tires. Less drag I see it now thank so much
I remember my uncle back in the late 1950s working a large veg garden with one of these machines it came new with loads of attachments one of them being a set of mini tractor wheels the rotors were removed the wheels were put on along with the jockey wheels a small trailer hitched on and away.
Maureen Phillip , The amount of attachments for these is unreal. They made these to last for all different jobs. I'd like to get some wheels for this one.
I’ve got a 5hp Merry Tiller 50s. My tiller tends to over heat even with new oil. Maybe I need to clean my air filter soaking in petrol or replace it but haven’t seen one like mine. I know there is winter and summer oil differences too. I would wear ear muffs myself as they really are off the scale to cause damage. I love mine though been running it for years. You’re right they really did build these to last. I’d like to add some tractor wheels and a cart to lug heavier weights around. Awesome
Thanks for the video. I’ve picked one of these up (model:714394) and it’ll start with a dose of easy start but struggles without it. Also when it is running: it’s down on power...it’s not running at regular fast speed. Do you think mine needs the points servicing? Or would you try something else first? Thanks
Probably the carb needs a good clean, the pipe the sucks the fuel up has a mesh filter on the end that maybe a bit clogged up. Next, I’d check spark plug (replace if needed) & points, you’ll need to get the fly wheel off though. If it’s still not good, take head off give a good clean, check the cylinder is not too badly scored, reseat the valves using valve paste, the check the valve gaps. Saying that, carbs given a good clean/service will probably help.

I've finally got round to looking at it today and I thought I'd replace the drive belt but I forgot to take a picture of the routing of the belt before it disintegrated and fell apart in my hands. I've got a replacement belt from motor factors but can anyone give me an idea of how the belt should be routed over the driveshaft, pulley and to the larger crank please? Any links to diagrams etc would be gratefully received.
Got one of these it’s desperately in need of a carb service and rebuild though. Any idea what the model of these Briggs and Stratton 3hp engines is called?
Daniel Dooling Hi, the one in this video is model number 80202 Briggs and Stratton. Although many different model engines were used. You should be able to find the model number stamped on the side of the metal shroud of the pull cord / on the fuel tank side. Check out my other videos, there is one showing the model number of a newer version but on the top of the shroud.
This is the only video I have seen with the correct method to control the rotovator.
When you get it right it’s so much easier.

Good vid, but you may want to remove your hand from the spark plug cap, when starting it up, if it shorts out, it'll give you a good jolt ! Lol.

SAE 30 oil in chain case and engine.

I work on all small engines Amazon has the carb for them and all small engines and much more I'm working on one now
Better to replace the whole thing with a Honda. They're interchangeable.
