  • First start of the year for the 5HP Briggs and Stratton MTD Garden Tiller. Its MTD Model # 212-390-000. Had this for a quite a while an overkill for this little garden but it has been used to completely redo the yard, flower beds and use as an aerator during the fall grass seeding. Does a really nice job, got tomatoes to plant, cucumbers and squash will come next.

I've had this about four months and have found it to be an aggressive and powerful rig. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxjo0FLo5z3Y_qUcT3vSlOqpMaMdFjvsXa I've used several others in the past and the Sun Joe surpasses these, easily. I note that several people have commented that it bounces on rocky and compacted soil. I believe that would be the case with all tillers - the ground does need to be "broken", either with a larger tractor type unit or with a shovel, and rocks need to be removed. I'm living on a Pike silt loam here in the midwest and the Sun Joe turns my garden to bug dust in two quick passes. I use a technique where I do a short 2 foot run then pull it back and let it go over it again.

Hi Alan thanks very much that's pretty good for a 40 year old Tiller. Must be one of those gear driven ones that will last forever as well. Take care now!

Just seen this video having just got back into gardening after a lot of years and intend getting a new rotavator. Its been 40 years since I used a petrol rotavator but if I remember the rear wheels should be taken off a front Tyne rotavator prior to use and the drag bar used for cutting depth and speed of cut, as fenderstratguy says the drag bar is upside down. but an educational video. thanks.

I’ve been seeing tillers a lot these days much like this on Facebook for like $50 and 100$ that sometimes ran and sometimes didn’t maybe I should get one

Hello Zinn oh yes that is a great deal if you get one these with this type of horizontal shaft Briggs and Stratton are just bullet proof. They sit a lot so the not running issue probably carburetor problems, its chain drive so if that tiller or tines appear to be jambed up then may be more expensive and not be worthwhile. Just about never seen any like these for sale here in need of repair mostly rusted out junk.

Got one at a garage sale for $40 bucks. Put a new carb on it for another $40 bucks and it runs like a dream.

Great vid. Do you know how to change the oil in it? Also what is the max amount of oil that can be used? I have the exact same tiller, but I don't have the instructions for it. Thanks.

There should be a small screw at the front and back down low on the engine block both are drain bolts at least on my briggs and strattons and honda small engines like this, I just fill it till the oil level is at the bottom of the oil plug thread which I would guess would be between 0.8 to 1.2 quarts of oil but really it depends on how big the engine is, so just buy 2 quarts just in case, if it says 10w30 use 10w30 and so on do not try to run diesel oil it won't work.

I just got a used tiller that look just like yours, also w/a 5HP Briggs and Stratton motor - with the exception of the name-brand label on the front. On mine, where "MTD" appears on the front of yours, at the beginning of the video, are the words POWER TILLER, to the left of which no words appear. As well, the model # label info on mine has COMPLETELY faded away and is longer visible . . . so I'm a bit frustrated. Do you know of any way to otherwise discern what model # my tiller is? I'm assuming maybe it's an "MTD" as well, cause as I said, it looks just like yours . . . but don't see the "MTD" name on it anywhere or model #. Very frustrating.

I have model 213 390 000 it's a 93, This year the carb cleaner didn't work so I am thinking of replacing the carb. It will fire but not stay running. It's like it's not getting fuel. I also replaced the belts and now the tines won't turn. Any idea's? they turned before I replaced the belt.

Must be the wrong belt and the carb is probably stopped up try and put it on half chock to see if it will run also. Check and make sure the air cleaner is clean good luck hope this helps
