Great upload! The BPM value is absolutely key in resolving values for a wide range of effects, such as chorus as its a delay/time based effect. You showed the compressor plugin during your commentary and it would be interesting to have your thoughts on that and how BPM could possibly be used to determine/resolve compression values. Obviously you've given a lot of thought to the maths as in your spreadsheet which is a great help! I've been using the delay charts from AIR studios in London for some years now after getting so frustrated trying to work out bpm/rev-delay times by ear! This information was a closely guarded secret up until the mid 90's and so were MIDI CC (control change) parameter numbers!

Hi! Further to the above I would set a compressor like this: Scan the target file for its peak dB amplitude & use that as the threshold value. Adjust ratio to taste. Use bpm / 60,.000 to resolve attack & release m/s values. Make-up gain is the mirror of the negative threshold value. That's the scientific approach so worth trying as a 'go to' place to start,,then adjust to taste. Knee setting is probably math resolveable as well. Any sound we perceive is related to maths & time i.e, speed of sound. I don't know why we use pan pots when we could use Haas panning. Its far more natural in how we perceive sounds in the real world. Caveat; It only works up to130 m/s though, after which its heard by our ears as an echo.

Sadly I'm doing a lot orchestral music lately and there it will be hard, because there you have no "fixed pre-delays" in relation to the bpm. It's a great tool for digital reverb, but for convolution reverb there will be some issues I guess :'(

But with that, from a user experience viewpoint, could I request that you don't use that RGB separation style screen transition, as it's quite unpleasant on the eye and adds an unnecessary visual noise which distracts from your excellent teaching content. PLEASE HELP ME!!! And even though this is lengthy, please hear me out! I honestly can't describe how useful your attached BPM Reverb Timings Spreadsheet has been, thank you so much! However, it is lacking two things that have caused me to still constantly refer to my calculator. Most importantly, and specifically when referring to the milliseconds column, I really wish that the numbers rounded to the third decimal place (ex. 5,818.182) rather than to the closest whole number. This would be beneficial when it came to making crucial decisions on things such as reverb pre delay timing. Secondly, I wish that the spreadsheet column info contained answers ranging from 8 bars to a 1/1,024 note rather than from 8 bars to a 1/128 note. I know that may sound excessive, yet when producing a song at a very slow BPM it would be a life saver! Having said this I was wondering if you could possibly edit the original spreadsheet to include these two crucial missing puzzle pieces. If not, or if possible for me to do so myself, please inform me as to how, if you could pretty please, PLEASE, it would literally make this the most amazing musical resource ever! If you by some miracle are able to make the spreadsheet for me, just know that I won't be able to stop myself from telling every single musician I know and meet about this video, your spreadsheet, and your youtube channel!!! 100%. Most of the time I see people using reverb, they just throw it on an tweak the decay time. The pre-delay is super essential to set up, depending on your goal and desired effect with the reverb. Cheers!
I love how simple and easy to understand you make it. I would find it fantastic if you could make the .numbers spreadsheet also available as a .pdf document. I do have a Mac but not numbers at the moment. However, on second thought one can not change the variables in a .pdf smh.. Okay any who, I shared my dilemma :D Love your work brother :)))
Hey hey. Yeah, you can't run calculations in a PDF. We've made an Excel version available and you can load that into Google Sheets for free if you don't have Excel. It's in the download now.
Great idea. And yes, you certainly can. This technique can be used for any time-based effect. Compressors are very interesting to experiment with in this respect.
DJ Vespers I just usb CMD + 1, 2, or 3 to change the grid size to what I need. Or if I figure out a 1/4 note then I can easily half it or double it. No need to leave Ableton and can stay in the flow.

Good idea and it kinda makes sense in most parts. The other ableton vids which use device on/off automation to end a reverb tail to me seem more logical though given an RT60 isn't a complete fade out of reverb, it's just a convention ;)

This is a great tutorial, and I have to ask why a reverb? It was really hard to notice any difference felt like a reverb was really not the best example, the delay in the beginning was perfect and I understood completely why this is useful. I am now lost on why this is useful, if the calculations I make are on time with a bpm of say 128, how can I use the ms I get from your spreadsheet to sync my devices like a saturator or another device that has no pre-delay. Again I understand this is a reverb tutorial, and I just felt lost at the end of your video. Felt like I downloaded somethind I won't need. Normally I am onboard with all of your video's you're fantastic and prolific artist! I have all your warp academy courses, they are siiiick! :D Though felt really lost on this one. Anyone with an easy, succinct answer to that would be fooling you. Reverb treatments can vary hugely depending on the genre and feel you're going for, as well as BPM of your song. I mean, there are some standard things you can do, but nothing that can be universally applied with good results. One thing I will say, that can point you in the right direction, is to use pre-delay on a lead vocal. A lead vocal should be intimate and up front, therefore having some separation between the dry and wet signal is advantageous. Also, be very careful not to overmix the reverb. I go for the "invisible reverb" effect, typically, where I nudge up the wet signal until it becomes noticeable, then back it off. The perfect setting (for me) is to miss it when I deactivate the reverb, but not to overtly notice it when it's in. That is the essence of the "invisible reverb".
Drews the man. Love it! but for sum reason when i open up numbers i can't change the bpm timing or do anything to it for that matter. It just stays at 70. Any tips
Hey Stephen. You may need to update your Numbers program. Or, you can easily load the Excel version into Google Sheets for free, online and use the calculator. Cheers!

you can also just drag and select an amount of time in arrangement view and it shows the time in the bottom bar.

You'd have to figure out what sounds good to you on each sound and customize a reverb to each different one if you want.

In my Reverb plugin there's no Decay time in milliseconds but percentage instead what to do in that case bro?
Get a new reverb plugin. That's silly to make a parameter in %. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
