I read in Geoff Emerick's book about him recording the Beatles way back in 1967 he used to do manual gain automation on the reverb and raise it just like after certain notes. And of course, the HP LP on the reverb is known as the "Abbey Road trick". Dude's were way ahead of the curve back then.
Dude, sidechaining the reverb? This tip is absolutely PRICELESS!! I'm gonna be doing nothing with my weekend off work except watching all your videos and soaking up every last tip!! Thanks a million!!
No joke man i watch our videos now since about half a year and i think u made me at least twice as good as before!! Keep on doing this please! The combination of the remake videos and mixing tutorials like this one is just perfect honestly!! Thanks man
I checked out your older "cleaning up reverb" video and was gonna say "just use a bus instead", but your pinned comment put me here where you indeed show that way of doing it instead :) I use this all the time to send lead vocals to a bus that sidechains into a trackspacer to control instruments and allow a lower mixed vocal to still sit well in a mix. The only thing I would add is that you don't actually need the aux channel at all. So instead of setting it to "no output" you could just delete it. The bus is still there doing it's thing. Logic just creates an aux for every new bus you enable by default since you most likely will need it, but yeah in this case you don't. Would be a great place to explain to newer Logic users that buses and auxes are very much two separate things.
Great tips there z, i have been doing the side chain thing a while now but still those transients messed up my reverb, not anymore, transient shaper really does the trick. Thank you so much, great track, great tuts.
Really good, thank you! I like to put the EQ before the reverb, at least when doing shimmer, so that the muddy frequencies don't mess with the reverb at all. I find that this often work even better :)
One of the best video tips for reverbs I've seen. Very to the point. Thanks for sharing! First time here, but I'm gonna check out your channel, because if the content is all like this I'm going to subscribe it! ;)
It's really strange that all these DAWs force you to do tons of actions to get a simple side chain happening... It's a one click thing in Reaper... Awesome video btw 🤘🤘❤️
Big Z, mind blowing channel and music you’ve created here! Questions: is 4:38 TransX similar to using the predelay knob on one of the Space Designer reverbs? And regarding the milliseconds chosen, there are formulas I’ve seen, even a calculator (where 60,000 is divided by BPM) How do you pick your milliseconds? And for the calculator (online) how would I know to pick 8th, 16th or other amounts that the predelay milliseconds would be synced?
Could use an Expander instead of wasting time to draw Gain automation. But either method will work. Same thing goes for TransX, using the PreDelay setting of a reverb will get you the same result. Either way, using both methods is cool as well.. ‘Sounded so nice I decided to do it twice’ 😅
Predelay won't give you the same result. You will only delay the attack sound on the reverb but you will still hear it. It could possibly be even more confusing.
@Radu sure, nothing wrong in either choice. Just wanted to point out that the two techniques won't give the same result. Up to you then to see what works the best.
Great video man as usual, I’m confused, side chaining reverb. Could we not have created a lead group and sent the group to the reverb bus with compressor side chained to the group? Thanks
good tutorial , but.....you did so.much effort for the reverb to sidechain to the leads and made a gain automation for the reverb fill the gap between the lead melod. here s the prob: if you shift the attack of your reverb (not a bad thing) you should make shure to shif a tiny bit also on your master ch , because i cant hear the tail of the reverb in your mix the way it was sounding in solo mode was nice ....but in mix it dissapeared. ....fix it with multiband en shift attack bit on master , nice tuts. keep up the good vibe , grtz
hola bro una pregunta, me podrias explicar en conclusion que hiciste con el compresor pro c? le diste side chain a la reverb del lead? con el trigger del mismo lead? gracias por la respuesta, muy interesante los tutos
Question: couldnt you skip the EQ by changing the reverb's tone function, and skip the transient shaper by increasing the reverb's delay function? Maybe that's somehow a noob question but i'd think it'd clean up the signal chain/CPU strain
I would answer probably yes for the tone control. However in your regular EQ plugin you might have more control and be able to shape more your sound. As for the predelay, the result won't be the same. You will only make the attack sound play later but you won't reduce it's impact as the transient shaper will do.
What if there's other instrument in between the reverb that comes in? Then you would eq the reverb according to the other stuff playing at the same time?
I read in Geoff Emerick's book about him recording the Beatles way back in 1967 he used to do manual gain automation on the reverb and raise it just like after certain notes. And of course, the HP LP on the reverb is known as the "Abbey Road trick". Dude's were way ahead of the curve back then.
I heard on a podcast there used to be multiple people doing automations like that during recording.
Hey Big Z, your videos are really awesome. I decided to watch everyday one or two of your videos and remake all the stuff in my daw.
I have been struggling with properly controlling reverb in my mixes. This is the single best breakdown I have seen on the topic. An amazing video!
Best producer content on RUclips. No clickbait, just effective, to the point solid technical advice. Cheers!
you are welcome brother
The most reliable producer on RUclips. Would be amazing to show the bus routing trick in FL
Man, so glad i have found this channel. The tutorials are just great. Thanks for sharing.
Dude, sidechaining the reverb? This tip is absolutely PRICELESS!! I'm gonna be doing nothing with my weekend off work except watching all your videos and soaking up every last tip!! Thanks a million!!
Dude. This is a HUGE game changer for me. Amazing tips, man!! Thank you! 🙏🏻
Bruh... I've been battling with that reverb click for like 2 years. You're the boss! Keep up the good work!
No joke man i watch our videos now since about half a year and i think u made me at least twice as good as before!! Keep on doing this please! The combination of the remake videos and mixing tutorials like this one is just perfect honestly!! Thanks man

Great tips here. Well explained and easily laid out. Gonna be adding this shit to my own productions!
Thanks! I especially like the tip about controlling the transient before reverb for sounds with a sharp attack.
Never thought of putting an envelope shaper in front of my reverb. Same for automating the gain of the reverb signal. Amazing tips man!
Big love for Big Z. Good fella
Great tips there z, i have been doing the side chain thing a while now but still those transients messed up my reverb, not anymore, transient shaper really does the trick. Thank you so much, great track, great tuts.
Thanks for the high value content delivered in a very humble way. Amazing.
Really nice! I didn't knew the "pre fader" step. Thanks!!
You're very underrated 🔥👊🏽
Great videos
Thank you bro this is so well explained even tho i use fl studio the way you explain everything makes it easy to translate it over to fl
Really good, thank you! I like to put the EQ before the reverb, at least when doing shimmer, so that the muddy frequencies don't mess with the reverb at all. I find that this often work even better :)
Love your tutorials as much as love your music. ♥️
Damn, Bro! even today there is still someone like me is searching for answer that you shared in your video! Thank you Z!
BIG Z THE GOAT
super helpful! you're the best one putting out production tutorial now
Thanks a lot!
Great video!!!
thats cool what u did 2 the gain. im a FL guy but after watching 2 of ur videos i already feel like i understand logic way more now lol
Sick! The reverb gain automation trick is really sick, and the song is great
Great content man! Can't wait for more!
Great tip on transient shaper, thanks man!
I struggled the last weeks so much with my reverb so this one is right on time! Thanks🙏💪

Hey bro I’m watching your videos multiple times and taking notes so this shit sticks!! Great job. You in philly? I’m in Bethlehem. PA boys 💯
Omg that transient designer trick works like magic
Big Z, mind blowing channel and music you’ve created here! Questions: is 4:38 TransX similar to using the predelay knob on one of the Space Designer reverbs? These vids are awesome man, thank you!
Thanks a lot. Very helpful tips!
YOU'RE ROCKING MAN 👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥 ❤❤
thanks for your tips
❤from india
Thank you very much man. you are the first person to convince me to use buses :D
Thanks for your lesson! Very useful !!!
Your really Great at what you do! Thanks for sharing! :)
Same train of thought as me, phew, thought i was crazy for a sec
Predelay won't give you the same result. You will only delay the attack sound on the reverb but you will still hear it. It could possibly be even more confusing.
Cool @LeKing. There’s no right or wrong as far as I see it here. Just a different approach / technique.
@Radu sure, nothing wrong in either choice. Just wanted to point out that the two techniques won't give the same result. Up to you then to see what works the best.
almost 100 subs Z!
Great video, thanks! I have one question, Why did you leave the bus 24 Aux? If you delete it it would be the same result?
You’ve got a new fan right now ❤️😉
Great video. Can you do a similar type of video on other effects such as delays, saturation/distortion, etc? Really helpful info and great music.
Yo!! Z can you make a video on stereo imaging and layering sounds?
Love youre videos!😊
Great Tutorial , thanks
Awesome video!!
BEST CHANNEL EVER I SEE
WoW it’s really helpfull specially the sidechain part!
why am I just finding you, thanks for your videos
big z you are such a fuckn boss thanks for the info man
Mega mate nice one
Great info thank you !
Is it the same reverb for all instruments in you track ? or do you adjust eq settings ?
Hi Big Z, at 0:22 you mentioned "Gray". Who you are referring to? Thanks!
Yes, I´m spending xmas seeing producing tips hahha nice video by the way, thanks. cheers from Brasil
You should always eq before the reverb
Great video man as usual, I’m confused, side chaining reverb. Could we not have created a lead group and sent the group to the reverb bus with compressor side chained to the group? Thanks
Yes you can do that but you still need to trigger the side chain compression with something, that’s where the additional bus comes in
great stuff you're doing, man!
_I am FL user. But I love your videos_ 😋
Amazing tutorial !!!
How are you making the lead sound ride into each note like that, almost like a small reverse. Is that like a wave file reversed for each note ?
Thanks! 🙏
hey z! should
this be done at composition stage or mastering stage? 😮
good tutorial , but.....you did so.much effort for the reverb to sidechain to the leads and made a gain automation for the reverb fill the gap between the lead melod. here s the prob: if you shift the attack of your reverb (not a bad thing) you should make shure to shif a tiny bit also on your master ch , because i cant hear the tail of the reverb in your mix the way it was sounding in solo mode was nice ....but in mix it dissapeared. ....fix it with multiband en shift attack bit on master , nice tuts. keep up the good vibe , grtz
CASINO TV CASINO TV shifting the attack of the reverb is called PreDelay. He didn’t have to use TransX , but it’s not wrong to use both either.
OMG, really useful tip! Respect you:) THX!
Thanks for watching 👍🏼
How did you make your leads like rising at every first hit? Also can you explain post and pre fader? It’s confusing 🤔
Thank you Big Z!! Anybody knows how to do this in Cubase 10?
Why use a transient shaper if you are sidechaining the reverb to the lead?
hola bro una pregunta, me podrias explicar en conclusion que hiciste con el compresor pro c? le diste side chain a la reverb del lead? con el trigger del mismo lead? gracias por la respuesta, muy interesante los tutos
Yes, the same lead will trigger the side chained compressor on the reverb bus. Si, el mismo lead activará el side chain.
how do you make the start of the melody sweepy?????????
About 3 minutes in you discuss putting an EQ right after the reverb. Is that EQ added right onto the reverb Bus channel then?
Yes it is.
Wait is this considered a reverb bus or a send? I'm not using logic and i got confused a bit
Power tutorial!💪
Nice one Z
Hi! Anyone can tell me the artist he named at 0'20''? Thanks!
one question, should we add room reverb to everything (eg. so they belong in the same "room")? Including bass/sub?
perfect! thanks man
Not my kind of music but great info dude. Thanks. I'm trying to guess what colour the Tele is. 😆
How is this done in ableton? There are no buses, on aux/return tracks.
Would u shape the transient on vocals?
How do you get that "reverse leads" sound?
Nice video, thanks
Which transient shaper plugin is known for good results?
Can anyone tell me if when I create the return channel in ableton it should be in ''master''? I can't find ''no output''
Amazing content 🙏🏻🎉👌🏻🏆
Thanks man 🙏🙏🙏
Big Z, What if you have a lead that 8th notes and 16th notes mixed continuous for 4 bars. Can this be applied as well. What would you do?
What artist are you talking about tho? (Graze)?
Make A tutorial On Delay As Well Bro....
Question: couldnt you skip the EQ by changing the reverb's tone function, and skip the transient shaper by increasing the reverb's delay function? Maybe that's somehow a noob question but i'd think it'd clean up the signal chain/CPU strain

As for the predelay, the result won't be the same. You will only make the attack sound play later but you won't reduce it's impact as the transient shaper will do.
Why can;t you just use a side chain compressor on the bus that you have the reverb on. Why do you need the pre fader no output bus
Thats cool. I reckon you might of went too much automation with the gain in the end. Thats just my opinion though. Overall good producing tips!
OMG this is really helpful,thx!
Great Video!Could you remake Garmani - Barraca ;)
Thanks 🙏 king 👑
What if there's other instrument in between the reverb that comes in? Then you would eq the reverb according to the other stuff playing at the same time?
Yeah if there’s other stuff then you don’t want to make it too crowded with too much reverb
Hi! Love your tutorials and remakes
It will be cool if you remake track R3HAB - BAD!
