In 1987 I was a t-shirt security guard at the Texas Jam festival (and a guitar player in my own life). Adrian was with Whitesnake and one of my favorite guitarist. I was in the pit in front of the stage during Whitesnake playing to 80,000. It was awesome. Then after the set Adrian came up to me only to ask how he could get something to eat with his meal ticket he was given. I showed him where to go. It was surreal. He is such a gentle soul and talented.
He is indeed, he never walked beside his shoes as we say in Dutch, which means he never became arrogant eventhough he was so successful.
This channel really does get great interviews, and the guests really get to relax and speak uninterrupted. Love your channel. Mysterious interviewer dude.
Thank you for listening, Dennis!
Full in Bloom has connected with some great musicians ..
Excellent ..✌️
Thank you, Scott!
Eddie was 7 and Alex was 9 when they moved to USA
You are correct sir.
Hands down the best eighties rock content available Fantastic interview style as always. Now to get Jake….
VERY much appreciated! I agree, send Jake my way...
Vandenberg took the moral high road and accepted the demotion in Whitesnake for Slip of the Tongue once Vai was brought aboard to put his signature flair into the albums songs. Yes Vai was great and exuberant in his rendition of Vandenberg's arrangements. I often wonder what the real bluesy sound on that album would have sounded like instead.
Vai came along because that record was in serious trouble. They were so desperate for material that they were going to re-record Burning Heart.
Im a HUGE Vai guy but I agree the album was such a departure from 87’- I would liked Vandenbergs style explored more than Vai.
@jayteesgear the problem with that was that Vandy didn't write '87 - Sykes did.
Wasn't this the time Adrian suffered a severe Wrist injury ? Because I remember years ago Adrian Vandenberg broke his wrist on his right arm and had needed surgery
So he claimed.
Back in 2008, Adrian Vandenberg congratulated me on the birth of my Daughter( now 16) and spoke to him on Facebook messenger about guitar influences and some gear talk.
Adrian Vandenberg is criminally overlooked, can stand shoulder to shoulder with any Rock Virtuoso.
Great player and a true Gentleman.
I tell ya,I have known about Adrian's work for 40 years, but never really was too interested in him until i heard this clip from the interview. Thanks for this, and the pics are a great touch! 🤟
he's just a guy, with a JOB, not a Creative, just a Sideman, with all his Sideman Stories that all start: I was standing next to.... We were playing at.........
these guys need to go work at Staples
His first album was pretty damn good.
Michael Schenker truly is the Mozart of rock guitarists, a kid prodigy first and an incredible teen and young adult professional player later, he's been playing guitar his whole life always with the same enthusiasm and creativity, once in a lifetime player and composer.
Yup, I love M.S. Truly a special player and very unique. Nobody has his phrasing and vibrato
Vandenburg isn’t in the same universe with Michael Schenker.
@@vbassone Adrien is a great guitarist, he's had a fantastic career but he's not as influencial as Michael of course. Schenker is top ten best ever.
@@lifeisnice23 Pretty much exactly what I said.
Bloom, you always seem to put these masterpieces out when its Coffee time here in the Pacific time zone 😛☕️
I don’t think Eddie was that old when he moved to the states. Eddie’s style was more American than European.
The point he was stressing was that Eddie and Alex grew up speaking Dutch and their family was Dutch. He did not mean musical style or personality.
Eddie was 7 when he moved to California. If he stayed in Holland, he'd be making cheese and not tunes.
@@MTCUploads1and playing Bavarian cheese whistle instead of guitar
@@jimmycampbell78 Right. Point taken. As a kid who moved far away when I was 11 yrs old I can tell you there's a big difference between 7 vs 14 yrs old in adapting to a new culture. I think Alex was probably around 10 or 11 yrs old. I guess I was thinking out loud based on my personal experience. If Ed had moved to the U.S. at 14 yrs old I question if he would've had enough time to adapt to the American culture and be the player he was with the same style when VH started.
You're wrong on both accounts. And who would know better, this guy who knew them and was in the scene with them or what? Hamm
Jake and Adrian are two of my favorite players and both are extremely underrated.
Eddie was seven when his family moved to the United States.
I'm surprised he wasn't corrected in the interview.
Regardless the point he was making was that Eddie and Alex grew up speaking Dutch with their family.
@@jimmycampbell787 is quite different from 14
Great interview and cool content. Yep really talented players.
I bought Vandenberg's 1st solo LP, (In my opinion their best.) because Kerrang! magazine said so much about him with the hint of Schenkeresque. So, if his playing got those accolades I think I'll take a chance and throw down the $. I wasn't disappointed. I'm surprised that Adrian and Michael are the same age. Adrian got his deserved success via Whitesnake. And Michael? He just keeps going despite his once being the Mad axe Man. Peace + Love Adrian. Thanks for your playing throughout the years.
That was cool. I my faves schenkmeister,Eddie and Adrian
When Adrian released his first album and saw all the people he was connected to? it was a slam dunk that he would be a breath of fresh air to the scene. Dude eats up the frets like a virtuoso~I still have the original cassette I bought when it came out. Thinking about that, I don't recall hearing any music on the rock/metal XM stations.
No, Ed and his family moved to the States when he was much younger and in the early 1960s
Wrong, Adrian. The Van Halens moved to the US from Holland when young Edward was 7 years old, not 14.
Not the only thing Adrian's memory was wrong about in the interview. I saw Vandenberg open for Ozzy on Ozzy's Speak Of The Devil tour in early 1983, and Ozzy's lineup was Jake E Lee, Tommy Aldridge, and Rudy Sarzo. Adrian says in this interview that he met Rudy later after Rudy had rejoined Quiet Riot.
My best friend bought a concert program from that Ozzy show, and the program still had Brad Gillis in it.
Regardless the point he was making was that Eddie and Alex grew up speaking Dutch.
@@sopwithsnoopy8779 Maybe the guy at the interview is an impostor.
@@sopwithsnoopy8779Rudy Sarzo never played with Jake E. Lee in Ozzy.
@@gabrielbrouwer According to wiki, Sarzo left Ozzy just after the concert(s) they recorded the Speak Of The Devil album for, in late 1982. They have listed as Ozzy's bassists in 1983 as Bob Daisley, Pete Way, or Don Costa. I will admit my memory may be failing me, but I'm positive it was neither Bob Daisley or Pete Way that I saw in early 1983, as I know and knew both of them. That leaves only Don Costa. But I am 'almost' positive it was Sarzo. I saw him with Ozzy in 1982 a month before Rhoads died. I was front row for the 1983 show, Battle Creek (yes, that show is not listed on the Ozzy concert history website, but he did indeed play a show in Battle Creek...February? Early March?) Anyways, I am pretty sure it was Sarzo, but my memory could be bad and you could very well be correct.
Love to see all the much deserved love for Full In Bloom here in the comments. These are some of the best interviews around.
Wow, thank you, John! You made my day.
@@fullinbloom thank you for having more journalistic integrity than any main stream network or journalist. it’s a true pleasure to hear someone conduct interviews with these guys that actually knows about how to engineer a record, gear, etc.
Always killer man u rule 🤘
There is no Van Halen without Diamond Dave.F Sammy.
Sammy made it Journey 2.0
about 15 yrs ago I tried a hot red Vandenberg guitar, sadly the floyd rose couldnt bend backwards for a good Dimebag squeal!
I have the original 1988 version. They didn't have Floyds. They had Kahlers (which were better)
It always surprised me that Eddie said he wasn't really influenced by Jimi Hendrix that he was more influenced by Eric Clapton WTF? he has WAY more incommon with Hendrix. Than overrated Clapton
Wow! Somebody who actually says it other than myself. I've always thought Clapton, is overrated.
@@thomaskinne2357 I've been play pretty much none stop since I was 5yrs old and I have always felt he was overrated as do several of the people I've been playing with my whole life. Even compared to his peers he's just a decent player. Slow Hand lol yeah because he's a one truck pony.
I mean. . . . . . . . . . . So he can play the pentatonic scale VERY well,
🤭
@@brianlittle9202 Yeah man. . . . . . . . . Me too.
Adrian Vandenberg is cool.
Cool.
Adrian always stayed true to the Dutch down to earth mentality, never acted like the arrogant rockstar.
Lots of comments here about Adrian misstating Eddie’s age when his family immigrated. How many people you knew briefly could tell us what you were doing at age 7 or 14?
I can
Nice
a spider web of legends for sure.
Eddie was 7 when he moved to the USA. He spoke Dutch with an accent. Cali boys the Van Halen brothers.
I think you meant the Bark at the Moon Tour. Speak of the Devil was with Brad Gillis.
Jake E. Lee joined pre-Bark at the Moon and did the Speak of the Devil tour. I didn't realize that until I was putting the video together. Gillis quit Ozzy's band before Speak of the Devil was released.
Sammy always thought they were talking shit about him😂😂😂😂
Very interesting that Adrian claims he spoke Dutch w/Ed & Al in '94. I have the Downtown sessions which is something that Ed, Al & Dave did around the time they finished recording A Different Kind of Truth and both Ed & Al claim they only speak a few Dutch curse words and can't speak the actual language. If anyone is interested you can prob still look up the Downtown Sessions on RUclips and you can hear it for yourself.
Noel Monk said that on the first few tours Eddie and Alex spoke in Dutch to each other quite a bit. If they were arguing the always spoke in dutch.
@@MoreEqualAnimal than Ed & Al clearly lied on The Downstown Sessions because when I listened yesterday to what Adrian said I immediately believed him.
@@Lynchfan88 They were kind of known for clearly lying.
@@MoreEqualAnimal So I've unfortuanately known for over 20 years.
There are many interviews here on YT where both VH brothers speak Dutch almost fluently. Easy to find.
Eddie did not move to the US when he was 14. It was in 1962 and he was 7.
Edward Van Halen Was 7 When He Came To The USA......
Eddie was actually 7 when his family moved here
Eddie and family moved to the United States in 1962 when Eddie was 7 yrs old....facts
Al and Ed spoke Dutch whoever was around . They spoke Dutch often when Valerie was around . Scammy was just doing too much coke himself I guess .
It drove DLR crazy in the recording sessions. Both AVH and EVH at the sound board talking in Dutch, DLR also in the room not knowing what they were critiquing (him). Diamond wanted to be in on all the nuances of the bands decisions. The Halens were on a different destination.

Adrian is incredible, great tone! So tasteful!
More than a "trace" of Schenker in his playing.
Bark at the moon was Jake E Lee, Speak of the devil was Brad Gillis.
Jake E. Lee joined pre-Bark at the Moon and did the Speak of the Devil tour. Gillis quit Ozzy's band before the album was released.
Wasn't Ed a little kid when he came to LA? He's American, he's ours dude

Love your stuff, man. Keep if up.
Thanks for listening!
The Van Halen's moved to the states when Eddie was 7 or 8, not 14.
Schenker is God. Just sayin
We got a very short glimpse of him with the Scorpions. He was just wanted more in terms of an autonomous career, it was not personal it appears but who knows.
Schenker stated when the informed the Scorpions of his departure, they got very angry and his brother called him up on the phone crying trying to change his mind.
He's Indonesian as well ... Wth???!!!
And Jake E. Lee is half Japanese !
@@drewlsy 😃😃😃😃
Eddie was 25 and Alex 19 when they moved from the swamps of Germany. Trust me, I'm half corked.
Eddie was 8 when he moved to the US, not 14.
forget about sam
Sammy turned it into Journey 2.0
No way he was 14…. He was like 5
hey....where are all the bootlegs of EVH just "jammin with The Boys"....you know....FOR FUN?
.....THERE AREN'T ANY, because EVH and his brother were NO FUN
EVH played in a style that served ONLY HIM
there is NOTHING to "learn" from EVH that couldn't be learned from a better player than HE
As orville9223 already mentioned, Ed and Al were 7 and 9 when they moved to the states with mom and dad. They attended elementary school here.
His point was that their family was Dutch and the brothers still spoke Dutch with him.
They attended school in the US. Yet they were classified as "immigrant" and put in separate confines with the African American, Asian, and Hispanic kids by school district policy. Ed spoke on not how this was an insult by being segregated but a learning experience as a minority and understanding hardship. It drove him to want to make a difference in his life.
@@jimmycampbell78 You've repeated that throughout this thread many times. We know their native language is Dutch. He clearly said though that Ed was 14 when his family moved here and that is false. Ed and Al were 7 and 9. Huge difference.
Did you know Eddies mom is pure indonesian ..filipino looking.
Adrian is a brilliant player and songwriter.
Quality guy, Coverdale pretty much threw him in the backseat once Vai arrived for session work. Vai ended up staying and Vandenberg never badmouthed that situation.
