I was clueless about how blender worked not to long ago so it feels so nice being able to comment this, but here are some things I learned to make making portals somewhat faster.
1. You can see how many triangles are on your portal by clicking on the two circles in the corner of your workspace then clicking statistics
2. Instead of using the decimate modifier, I find it easter to go into edit mode, select the entire part, click mesh in the upper menu, then go down to "clean up" and "decimate geometry".
