What happens to the inhabitants of a small town when a playful wind blows through, randomly taking away every object in its path? This book of simple rhyming verse and bright illustrations takes children on a whirlwind trip that shows how the forces of nature impact the lives of ordinary people.
The wind blows, and off goes Mr. White's umbrella. Lost is Priscilla's broom. The scarves worn by two twins are pulled away. The town judge is embarrassed when his toupee is lifted up into the sky! But readers will be surprised to find that just when the wind is about to take its collection of odd objects to the depths of the deep blue sea, it suddenly decides to follow a different course.....taking curious readers along with it.
Vocabulary (to highlight during reading or in follow-up discussions):
Umbrella, balloon, kite, handkerchief (hanky), wig; laundry, clothesline, postman, judge, twins; snatched,
plucked, tossed, whirled, fluttering. There are lots of interesting words here: be selective!
Discussion (after reading or during child retelling or extension activities):
“Why did the wind blow away some things, but not others?” [E.g., the postman and guard
did not lose their hats; nobody’s coat blew away.] Some children may understand that
this has to do with weight; others might notice that some items are fastened on. Encourage
children’s creative thinking and accept a range of answers. “If that big wind blew when we were outside on the playground, what do you think would blow away?”
