I spent some years working in the railroad industry. Two fellows that I knew were, at different times, the Division Engineers in charge of track maintenance for this route in Colorado. Most train passengers have no clue about the engineering and hard work necessary to keep a mountain railroad running--those fellows lived it every day. They knew by heart every foot of track of the whole route. I also knew a number of the train crews that operated over that route on a daily basis. I'm retired from all of that and live elsewhere now, but I still keep in touch with some of those fellows. Mountain railroaders are a whole different breed.
I have been gorging myself watching all these train journey across, up and down America! Land I'm Obsessed! I live in the UK but mum in the USA. I'd LOVE to experienced this! All I've seen with her...so for now I'll dream and fantasize. She is 71 and still work harder than ever...Soooo Lottery please come true (through)😄😍
I'm an American who spent 3 months in the UK last year. Traveled from Cornwall tp Scotland (in stages) by train. Absolutely beautiful; don't undersell British scenery. Yet, I understand what you are saying. The distances, the diversity of scenery.
Don't leave out Via, the Canadian equivalent. Except for one thing: Via is a longer trip, over 3,000 miles from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. I'm an American, but I have an appreciation for things Canadian too.

I just accidentally came across your "Rockies to Red Rocks" video. I started watching it and it didn't take long before my husband says, "Honey that is the next trip we are doing." You see we have recently become empty nesters and are trying to figure out what trips to takes. This caught our eye as we had talked about doing something similar to this years ago, but kids, school, college, weddings, have kept us from doing so. Now our adventures begin as we are a table for two again.
I just cried when I watched this. I lived in Golden for 18 years and had a time-share in Winter Park. I miss it so much. The best thing about Glenwood Springs is the hot springs, I wouldn't miss it.
I did the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff in Gold Leaf several years ago & it was great. The food, the scenery, the history & the service were all superb. The hotel in Kamloops was modern & clean with the hotels in Vancouver & Banff were also very historic. I would highly recommend this iconic Canadian train trip to anyone.
The Rocky Mountain scenery never gets old...so true! I'm so grateful that the California Zephyr goes through the same scenery for a really economical price. I've been on it both directions four times (and 9 times driving back and forth since 1971) - living in Denver and visiting my children in Northern California. Just love the ride, the history, the trees, the mountains, rocks, peaks, mesas, and the Hoo Doos near and in Utah. Thanks for a GREAT video !

Rocky Mountaineer is a new train tour that I was unaware of. Looks like it's awesome other than waiting on the freight traffic even if was expected. Glad they brought the service to the US.
Hope they also expand somewhat more in USA also… SilverLeaf +Plus+ Service level on this route seems adequate, where as GoldLeaf Service on The Canadian Routes thru The Rockies for the higher viewing points & end of carriage viewing points is well worth the extra fare…
Reminds me of the American Orient Express that ran 30+ years ago. Had a friend who was a porter on that train. He had a huge mustache, which inspired the bosses to dress him in 1880's British railway uniforms. He was a very pleasant guy, got very nice tips!
Did you travel on the American Orient Express? If so, how was it? Many years ago-around 2007 I think-I purchased tickets on that train for my husband and me. Cost us over $20K, but we knew it would be a trip of a lifetime. We were so stoked about going! But just THREE DAYS before departure, we got an email saying the company had gone bankrupt and our trip was cancelled! And they were non-committal about a refund! CRUSHING BLOW! Thankfully our credit card company refunded all our money with no hassle. (Yay, Chase!) But we’re still sick about just missing our “trip of a lifetime”.
Put in a request with them to get placed in the car with Mike as the car attendant if he is working your trip. He us a rail fanatic and grew up in Denver and has been all over Colorado. Also make sure you do the route beginning in Denver. The Moab departure leaves in the afternoon and can sometimes get into Glenwood Springs after 9pm depending on other rail traffic. We watched both your videos. Thank both of you for making these. We had to compare to the California Zephyr videos. We think the California Zephyr is a better option. Cosy private roomette or larger. The food on the Zephyr looked healthier and better. Those busses following the train sounds silly and a waste of fuel. What is the point of staying in a hotel when there is a big chance there is no time to explore Glenwood springs. Should be a destination itself and then catch another train two days later.
My grandson and I were fortunate enough to be on the inaugural run of this trip. I had Rocky Mountaineer on my bucket list for at least 12 years. When I couldn’t travel into Canada last year, and this trip popped up…had to do it. We were not disappointed. You really did a great job of getting the adventure on video.
@@jbob1548 yes there is definitely a Canadian trip. It was Co-d that prevented me that year. I would still like to do a trip there. But Scotland/Ireland are calling this year.

I'd only do one of these expensive train trips if you got to stay at the checkpoints for a longer time. Obviously it's beautiful but it would just feel rushed and I wouldn't get to be outside so my other senses could experience and enjoy it. With that said, the second day after the sun came out...wow. Beautiful.

Took this train in April from moab to denver. Just as beautiful but interestingly no delays for other Trains! Amazing journey! Absolutely top notch food and service.

I did this route on Amtrak from Denver to San Franciso, absolutely beautiful. Be prepared for the constant mooning by the families and people from the campsites. It's equally my favorite along with the Starlight from LA to Seattle scenic route.

There is also a Rocky Mountaineer in Canada between Vancouver with a day stop in Kamloops in a Hotel and the next day from Kamloops to Banff. I was on this train in 2018 between Banff and Vancouver. It was incredible. Never forget!
@@j3lny425 I came with the Canadian Express from Toronto via Winnipeg to Edmonton and Jasper. Then there was a bus transfer on the Icefields Parkway to Banff. The next day we ride the Rocky Mountaineer from Banff to Vancouver with a day stopover in Kamloops. Great experience. Never forget!

If a private railroad is building infrastructure, buying equipment, or even just paying Amtrak for the use of their facilities, that's still more passenger rail than we would otherwise have had. I agree that passenger rail should, generally, be run as a service through some level of government, but if a private company (ex. Brightline) can get something built out and operating, so long as it's not egregiously expensive to use I'm fine letting someone other than the government cover part of the development cost. As far as sightseeing trips go, if the rails and stations have excess capacity, why not let a tourist or heritage railroad run some excursions?
New cars make it all especially cleanness. Lucky you! It’s awesome to go by train. And into my bucket list it goes. Nothing can be compared with the beautiful breathtaking scenery of America! It has it all. Hopefully people appreciate it with gratitude not entitlement to preserve the beauty.

The best view of the Grand Mesa is when you just arrive in the Mesa valley, opposite of Mount Garfield. You look to the left and enjoy the awe of the size of this mountain. I loved being on the south side of a car when I entered valley because I loved gazing at the mountain as we passed by. A real treat. I always called it "my baby" because my childhood bedroom window always faced in every home I lived in. I woke up to it every day. How could you miss this majestic mountain? You must not have been on the south side of the train when you passed it and you must not have seen it until you were close to the border of Utah. The fact that you could see it still that far away tells you how big this mountain is.
Man every time I see one of these tourist trains I get sticker shock when the price comes up. Hard to justify the expense when you're travelling with a kid like us. Thanks for doing these videos so I can get jealous.

Hi Jerome! I actually work on Rocky Mountaineer’s Denver team so I can answer this question :) The trip is fully ADA accessible with lifts onto both the motor-coaches and the train. We also provide ADA accessible transport to and from hotels in Glenwood Springs. It is also possible to remain in your wheelchair or scooter on the train without transferring into your seat (as long as it fits on board.)
@@gablepatterson647 thank you, however, i am not wheelchair bound. i had spine surgery in 1996. left me disabled. having a proper chair with no back movement is best for me. i look to learn more about this fun trip.
This Canadian train has operated for many years in Canada’s Rockies primarily between Calgary and Vancouver via Jasper and Banff. Although it’s pricey, it’s a beautiful trip and well worth the cost.
I know you guys have this "Travel Channel" vibe going on, but that shot in the observation car showing the length of the observation car and more importantly the view outside was AWESOME!!!! more of those please!
45 degrees, raining, night time. Absolutely perfect conditions and timing for Glenwood Canyon pool. Honestly. The temp of the water makes those conditions delightful.
You guys were fun and did a great job, especially playing off each other, it gave some dimension. Yes I caught v/t, I do a lot of road trips and generally have to do it in my head using multiples of 60mph. eg I have 180 miles to drive and 60 times 3 hours equals 180 miles, I always hated word problems but always had to do them in real life. I fell in love with train travel in AK. I've revised most every one who's asked me about AK with "just take the train, fly in to Fairbanks and train down to your cruise ship". Most efficient and gorgeous trip you'll take. Also learned not to lean out too far while approaching bridges. A harrowing experience where I almost lost a DSLR and useful parts of my anatomy. Safe and wonderful travels!
These are the same coaches used between Vancouver Pacific Central to Jasper/Banf. Kudos to the engineers and builders who created this marvel of a route
When I was a little kid I was able to take a B&O RR train from Camden Station Baltimore through indescribably scenic mountains to Cumberland MD to visit grandparents in Frostburg and I wish it could be restored through to Morgantown WV as a tourist vacation train.

Living in Eastern Colorado, I could see taking my wife on a train like this. We have done the Zephyr from Fort Morgan to Glenwood, but still have never been to Moab and this looks like a comfortable way to go. Thanks Jeb for the amazing video as always!
THIS is the kind of train I have been waiting for in the United States. I'd love to take a train like this from Los Angeles to the Coachella Valley or to Las Vegas (maybe not) or San Francisco. All should have been bullet train projects, but I wouldn't mind the slower pace for that kind of experience.
USA newest Train is like 30 years old train in CHINA. don't get me wrong but USA has talent to do all the tech stuff, but as for as trains they are like 30-40 years behind

Traveled by steam train from Chattanooga to Crossville TN once with my dad and step mom. It was a day trip to shop there and return that evening. Really glad my dad took me. I was about 13 then and will have it as a memory forever. Such a much more beautiful view out your windows than the normal old plane ones :)

I just watched this on TV, but you can't comment there. The food on this trip looked delicious. I went to Canyonlands and Arches many years ago, and they were the most spectacular scenery I had ever seen, until I saw the Grand Canyon three years ago. I actually cried the first time I saw the Grand Canyon. The video was great and really showed what the trip was like. Thank you.
Jeb, the area you point to and are calling The Grand Mesa is actually the Northern end of the Uncompahgre Plateau, and part of the Colorado National Monument. The Grand Mesa is actually at the East end of the Grand Valley, just Outside Palisade. As you came into Palisade, around the curve, it was on your left hand side. I only correct you because I lived in Grand Junction for 27 years, and explored the area extensively. I’m glad you found a hidden part of America, normally Flyover Country.
Grand Mesa is actually quite large and I am surprised you could'nt find it. Also, in addition to growing wine grapes (which is a relatively recent thing) the Grand Valley has been an area which has produced fruit for over 100 years. Peaches, pears, cherries and other fruit irrigateed with water from the Colorado River. The town just west of Grand Junction is named Fruita.
I lived in Grand Junction for a while. What you thought was the Grand Mesa was actually Monument Canyon. Mount Garfield is on the North side of town and Grand Mesa is to the east of Palisade. It's a beautiful area that has great weather!
and you called the book cliffs which are in utah not colorado--we always thought of all the area around grand junction as the grand mesa--did a lot of oil field work there years ago

I lived in Oregon for 8yrs, but this video showed some of the most stunning scenery and landscaped country I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing your experience on the Rocky Mountaineer.
Grand Junction, CO native here, I hate to break it to you but the Grand Mesa is the mountain to the east of GJ, what you showed there around 23:40ish is the Colorado National Monument. Still, gorgeous. Definitely try some GJ wine, Two Rivers winery is absolutely fantastic if you ever find a bottle!

Jeb, thank you so much for mentioning the light when you were leaving Glenwood Springs. I think far too many people take things like the lighting for granted and miss out on some of the most spectacular things in life. The lighting is where the magic begins.
You need to take the train from Bratislava to Košice in Slovakia, during the day. It's my favorite train trip, takes around 5 hours and showcases all of the various landscapes of Slovakia. It goes by extremely quickly because there is just so much scenery to take in.
I went on a Rocky Mountineer trip thru Canada and it was amazing. 5 star! Everything was perfect. On board was comfortable and every need was taken care of. The food was amazing. I would recommend highly.
Great video! As a local in the western part of Colorado I would like to clarify that on minute 23:32 is not the Grand Mesa. It is actually the Colorado National Monument. On minute 23:47 you can see the Grand Mesa in the background.
I wondered why you appeared to have whole coaches to yourselves. At $1500 a pop, I think I know. Also know why the bar is so tempting., Now try Washington and Oregon…we may not beat Colorado on mountains…but wine…now you’re talking…
My favorite part of that train ride from Denver to Moab Utah is going through those big pretty tall Rocky Mountain in the rookies in Colorado because they have a lot to tunnels that the train goes through!
We did this trip. The first year they offered it out of Covid. They had to do something as Canada reminded closed for so long. It was a great first experience. Very comfortable and food was wonderful. We spend a few days in Salt Lake City. Transport to Moab. Stayed there a few days. Then took the train back to Denver. Spent a few days in that area. It was a great vacation.

I used to live in Denver and many other CO counties. And I seriously want to take this trip. I love a good road trip but I can't imagine anything more relaxing than this. I would love to go through Moffat tunnel. The business with the train cars filled with concrete I thought was really interesting. And the wind does get pretty insane
I lived in Pueblo, Arvada, and a very small town no one's ever heard of. Lol. I still love Colorado. Would enjoy the train trip also, have never gone through the Moffatt tunnel. My last trip on a train in Peru I learned that I need to face forward because I got sick. Never been car sick but did on train.
As a kid growing up in Boulder we would ride our bikes south of town about five miles and catch the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Winter Park Ski Train that stopped there. The train went through the Moffat Tunnel both ways. It was so cool. Kind of creepy because it was so dark and long. We also biked to the east opening of the tunnel to watch the giant door open and the trains come through. Way cool.
This is a sightseeing bonanza! - all the wonderful views of the California Zephyr but at a slower pace to totally enjoy the scenery - wish I could afford it!!!
Mr Brooks, Many many special greetings. I am originally from Washington DC and have been living in Southern California since 1961. About 30 years ago I was semi retired and decided to take a leisurely trip east. So the entire trip was by railroad. The Desert Wind was still running. Since I was living in Anaheim CA I Boarded in Fullerton. I had saved up for the trip and was thus able to use a roomette. From Chicago I met the friendliest group of people and though we had never met before and would never meet again for that while we were the most important people in each others lives. One of the ladies was coming from Montana to visit he daughter and her first grand child who was less than one month old. When we arrived in DC her daughter and the baby were waiting there. You can't imagine how touched we all were. There were quite a few happy tears shed. After visiting relatives and old friends in DC I came home by way of New Orleans then the southern route back to Orange county. Needless to say I am sold on train travel. Since then I have made many train trips. I have traveled cross country at least 30 times with at least one thirty day visit to the Chesapeake Bay every fall. From here to Chicago I have traveled every route. Not only from LA but also from Seattle and Emeryville as well as the route through New Orleans.

I hadn't heard of this train or this route. Imagine my surprise when I saw the picture of scenery from the area I grew up, and see a train on what I thought to be an abandoned or rarely used track. Growing up in Moab, I never would have dreamed it would be a tourist train destination.
From Moab also and this was news to me. It looks incredible. I've lived all through these areas Utah/Colorado over the years but seeing it by rail would be a trip to remember

I initially though this was the Canadian version of the Rocky Mountaineer (which I've seen a video of on another RUclips channel). This US version is news to me, and it's great that one can enjoy the mountain scenery on a luxury train without having to cross the Canadian border!
The scenery in Canada is more spectacular, especially the 3 day on the train from Jasper to Vancouver late in the season. It’s the best of the 3 routes! Fred
It's owned by the same Canadian company that runs the Rocky mountaineer in Canada. They started the US service in 2021, hopefully it works out for them.
COVID reintroduced me to RUclips. Nice Trane ride. I'm writing this mainly because I appreciated your comments of all the engineering and hard work involved in the conversation of the rail line. Such beautiful and productive people, places, and things should not be taken for granted.
It's really interesting to see a train ride that really is just so focused on the journey and not commutes; I'm from the Netherlands, so every time there was a stop due to a train passing or similar and you guys were stuck waiting and when Suzanne said ''This is just classic train travel, you just kinda sit and enjoy the journey'' it awakened such a Fear in me going ''No WHY are we stopping!!'' haha! The same with a lot of the slow driving of the train throughout the video, I'm so used to sitting in the train every day to and from school proper dreading every time my train slows down or, heaven forbid, stops entirely! I bet I'd be much more thankful for the slower pace if I was cruising through that beautiful scenery myself though! Ample time to get nice photos!
the rail experience you're used to only really exists in cities as the metro. theres a few longer commuter rail options out there but they arent nearly as dominant as they are in the EU and UK
In the USA, long distance trains all run on freight rails, single track except for the sidings. Freight is more profitable, so freight trains get the right of way. This is changing, but very, very slowly. And sometimes politics gets in the way.
That's one of the things about the Gold Leaf cars, they max out the loading gauge on the North American rail network. From what I can see they are like the Gold Star cars in the Alaska Railroad.

I just cried when I watched this. I lived in Golden for 18 years and had a time-share in Winter Park. I miss it so much. The best thing about Glenwood Springs is the hot springs, I wouldn't miss it.

I did the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Banff in Gold Leaf several years ago & it was great. The food, the scenery, the history & the service were all superb. The hotel in Kamloops was modern & clean with the hotels in Vancouver & Banff were also very historic. I would highly recommend this iconic Canadian train trip to anyone.

The Rocky Mountain scenery never gets old...so true! I'm so grateful that the California Zephyr goes through the same scenery for a really economical price. I've been on it both directions four times (and 9 times driving back and forth since 1971) - living in Denver and visiting my children in Northern California. Just love the ride, the history, the trees, the mountains, rocks, peaks, mesas, and the Hoo Doos near and in Utah. Thanks for a GREAT video !

Rocky Mountaineer is a new train tour that I was unaware of. Looks like it's awesome other than waiting on the freight traffic even if was expected. Glad they brought the service to the US.
Hope they also expand somewhat more in USA also… SilverLeaf +Plus+ Service level on this route seems adequate, where as GoldLeaf Service on The Canadian Routes thru The Rockies for the higher viewing points & end of carriage viewing points is well worth the extra fare…
I actually think the delays on this trip might be the first time I'd not only be okay with a delay, I might actually welcome them!

Reminds me of the American Orient Express that ran 30+ years ago. Had a friend who was a porter on that train. He had a huge mustache, which inspired the bosses to dress him in 1880's British railway uniforms. He was a very pleasant guy, got very nice tips!
Did you travel on the American Orient Express? If so, how was it? Many years ago-around 2007 I think-I purchased tickets on that train for my husband and me. Cost us over $20K, but we knew it would be a trip of a lifetime. We were so stoked about going! But just THREE DAYS before departure, we got an email saying the company had gone bankrupt and our trip was cancelled! And they were non-committal about a refund! CRUSHING BLOW! Thankfully our credit card company refunded all our money with no hassle. (Yay, Chase!) But we’re still sick about just missing our “trip of a lifetime”.

Put in a request with them to get placed in the car with Mike as the car attendant if he is working your trip. He us a rail fanatic and grew up in Denver and has been all over Colorado. Also make sure you do the route beginning in Denver. The Moab departure leaves in the afternoon and can sometimes get into Glenwood Springs after 9pm depending on other rail traffic. Love the videos from both of you. Keep 'em coming

We had to compare to the California Zephyr videos. We think the California Zephyr is a better option. Cosy private roomette or larger. The food on the Zephyr looked healthier and better. Those busses following the train sounds silly and a waste of fuel. What is the point of staying in a hotel when there is a big chance there is no time to explore Glenwood springs. Should be a destination itself and then catch another train two days later.

My grandson and I were fortunate enough to be on the inaugural run of this trip. I had Rocky Mountaineer on my bucket list for at least 12 years. When I couldn’t travel into Canada last year, and this trip popped up…had to do it. We were not disappointed.

I'd only do one of these expensive train trips if you got to stay at the checkpoints for a longer time. Obviously it's beautiful but it would just feel rushed and I wouldn't get to be outside so my other senses could experience and enjoy it. With that said, the second day after the sun came out...wow. Beautiful.

Took this train in April from moab to denver. Just as beautiful but interestingly no delays for other Trains! Amazing journey! Absolutely top notch food and service.

I did this route on Amtrak from Denver to San Franciso, absolutely beautiful. Be prepared for the constant mooning by the families and people from the campsites. It's equally my favorite along with the Starlight from LA to Seattle scenic route.

There is also a Rocky Mountaineer in Canada between Vancouver with a day stop in Kamloops in a Hotel and the next day from Kamloops to Banff. I was on this train in 2018 between Banff and Vancouver. It was incredible. Never forget!
This Rocky mountaineer train in the US is also owned by the same Canadian company that you were on.
I took it all the way to Calgary.
@@j3lny425 I came with the Canadian Express from Toronto via Winnipeg to Edmonton and Jasper. Then there was a bus transfer on the Icefields Parkway to Banff. The next day we ride the Rocky Mountaineer from Banff to Vancouver with a day stopover in Kamloops. Great experience. Never forget!

@@davidhutchinson5233 I want more development, period. If a private railroad is building infrastructure, buying equipment, or even just paying Amtrak for the use of their facilities, that's still more passenger rail than we would otherwise have had.
I agree that passenger rail should, generally, be run as a service through some level of government, but if a private company (ex. Brightline) can get something built out and operating, so long as it's not egregiously expensive to use I'm fine letting someone other than the government cover part of the development cost.
As far as sightseeing trips go, if the rails and stations have excess capacity, why not let a tourist or heritage railroad run some excursions?
Please remember the trip is the train ride itself. "Delays" are a treat that prolong a wonderful experience. ❤️

The best view of the Grand Mesa is when you just arrive in the Mesa valley, opposite of Mount Garfield. You look to the left and enjoy the awe of the size of this mountain. I loved being on the south side of a car when I entered valley because I loved gazing at the mountain as we passed by. A real treat. I always called it "my baby" because my childhood bedroom window always faced in every home I lived in. I woke up to it every day. How could you miss this majestic mountain? You must not have been on the south side of the train when you passed it and you must not have seen it until you were close to the border of Utah. The fact that you could see it still that far away tells you how big this mountain is.
Good food/beautiful mountain scenery in remote quiet areas is a great vacation and de-stresser

Man every time I see one of these tourist trains I get sticker shock when the price comes up. Hard to justify the expense when you're travelling with a kid like us. Thanks for doing these videos so I can get jealous.

Hi Jerome! I actually work on Rocky Mountaineer’s Denver team so I can answer this question :) The trip is fully ADA accessible with lifts onto both the motor-coaches and the train. We also provide ADA accessible transport to and from hotels in Glenwood Springs. It is also possible to remain in your wheelchair or scooter on the train without transferring into your seat (as long as it fits on board.)

This Canadian train has operated for many years in Canada’s Rockies primarily between Calgary and Vancouver via Jasper and Banff. Although it’s pricey, it’s a beautiful trip and well worth the cost.

You guys were fun and did a great job, especially playing off each other, it gave some dimension. Yes I caught v/t, I do a lot of road trips and generally have to do it in my head using multiples of 60mph. eg I have 180 miles to drive and 60 times 3 hours equals 180 miles, I always hated word problems but always had to do them in real life. I fell in love with train travel in AK. I've revised most every one who's asked me about AK with "just take the train, fly in to Fairbanks and train down to your cruise ship". Most efficient and gorgeous trip you'll take. Also learned not to lean out too far while approaching bridges. A harrowing experience where I almost lost a DSLR and useful parts of my anatomy. Safe and wonderful travels!

When I was a little kid I was able to take a B&O RR train from Camden Station Baltimore through indescribably scenic mountains to Cumberland MD to visit grandparents in Frostburg and I wish it could be restored through to Morgantown WV as a tourist vacation train.

Living in Eastern Colorado, I could see taking my wife on a train like this. We have done the Zephyr from Fort Morgan to Glenwood, but still have never been to Moab and this looks like a comfortable way to go. Thanks Jeb for the amazing video as always!

THIS is the kind of train I have been waiting for in the United States. I'd love to take a train like this from Los Angeles to the Coachella Valley or to Las Vegas (maybe not) or San Francisco. All should have been bullet train projects, but I wouldn't mind the slower pace for that kind of experience.

Amtrak runs a train from Los Angeles along the California coastline to the Coachella/Salinas farm valleys. It’s a gorgeous train ride!

Traveled by steam train from Chattanooga to Crossville TN once with my dad and step mom. It was a day trip to shop there and return that evening. Really glad my dad took me. I was about 13 then and will have it as a memory forever. Such a much more beautiful view out your windows than the normal old plane ones :)

I just watched this on TV, but you can't comment there. The food on this trip looked delicious. I went to Canyonlands and Arches many years ago, and they were the most spectacular scenery I had ever seen, until I saw the Grand Canyon three years ago. I actually cried the first time I saw the Grand Canyon. The video was great and really showed what the trip was like. Thank you.
Jeb, the area you point to and are calling The Grand Mesa is actually the Northern end of the Uncompahgre Plateau, and part of the Colorado National Monument. The Grand Mesa is actually at the East end of the Grand Valley, just Outside Palisade. As you came into Palisade, around the curve, it was on your left hand side. I only correct you because I lived in Grand Junction for 27 years, and explored the area extensively. I’m glad you found a hidden part of America, normally Flyover Country.

Grand Mesa is actually quite large and I am surprised you could'nt find it. Also, in addition to growing wine grapes (which is a relatively recent thing) the Grand Valley has been an area which has produced fruit for over 100 years. Peaches, pears, cherries and other fruit irrigateed with water from the Colorado River. The town just west of Grand Junction is named Fruita.
I lived in Grand Junction for a while. What you thought was the Grand Mesa was actually Monument Canyon. Mount Garfield is on the North side of town and Grand Mesa is to the east of Palisade. It's a beautiful area that has great weather!
and you called the book cliffs which are in utah not colorado--we always thought of all the area around grand junction as the grand mesa--did a lot of oil field work there years ago

Grand Junction, CO native here, I hate to break it to you but the Grand Mesa is the mountain to the east of GJ, what you showed there around 23:40ish is the Colorado National Monument. Still, gorgeous. Definitely try some GJ wine, Two Rivers winery is absolutely fantastic if you ever find a bottle!

Jeb, thank you so much for mentioning the light when you were leaving Glenwood Springs. I think far too many people take things like the lighting for granted and miss out on some of the most spectacular things in life. The lighting is where the magic begins.
You need to take the train from Bratislava to Košice in Slovakia, during the day. It's my favorite train trip, takes around 5 hours and showcases all of the various landscapes of Slovakia. It goes by extremely quickly because there is just so much scenery to take in.

I went on a Rocky Mountineer trip thru Canada and it was amazing. 5 star! Everything was perfect. On board was comfortable and every need was taken care of. The food was amazing. I would recommend highly.
Great video! As a local in the western part of Colorado I would like to clarify that on minute 23:32 is not the Grand Mesa. It is actually the Colorado National Monument. On minute 23:47 you can see the Grand Mesa in the background.

My favorite part of that train ride from Denver to Moab Utah is going through those big pretty tall Rocky Mountain in the rookies in Colorado because they have a lot to tunnels that the train goes through!
We did this trip. The first year they offered it out of Covid. They had to do something as Canada reminded closed for so long. It was a great first experience. Very comfortable and food was wonderful. We spend a few days in Salt Lake City. Transport to Moab. Stayed there a few days. Then took the train back to Denver. Spent a few days in that area. It was a great vacation.
You and Susan need to get to Vancouver BC and take the Rocky Mountaineer in their Gold Leaf Service - it's absolutely fabulous!

I used to live in Denver and many other CO counties. And I seriously want to take this trip. I love a good road trip but I can't imagine anything more relaxing than this. I would love to go through Moffat tunnel. The business with the train cars filled with concrete I thought was really interesting. And the wind does get pretty insane
You can do this on the Zephyr for much cheaper.

I lived in Pueblo, Arvada, and a very small town no one's ever heard of. Lol.
I still love Colorado. Would enjoy the train trip also, have never gone through the Moffatt tunnel. My last trip on a train in Peru I learned that I need to face forward because I got sick. Never been car sick but did on train.
As a kid growing up in Boulder we would ride our bikes south of town about five miles and catch the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Winter Park Ski Train that stopped there. The train went through the Moffat Tunnel both ways. It was so cool. Kind of creepy because it was so dark and long. We also biked to the east opening of the tunnel to watch the giant door open and the trains come through. Way cool.

Mr Brooks, Many many special greetings. I am originally from Washington DC and have been living in Southern California since 1961. About 30 years ago I was semi retired and decided to take a leisurely trip east. So the entire trip was by railroad. The Desert Wind was still running. Since I was living in Anaheim CA I Boarded in Fullerton. I had saved up for the trip and was thus able to use a roomette. From Chicago I met the friendliest group of people and though we had never met before and would never meet again for that while we were the most important people in each others lives. One of the ladies was coming from Montana to visit he daughter and her first grand child who was less than one month old. When we arrived in DC her daughter and the baby were waiting there. You can't imagine how touched we all were. There were quite a few happy tears shed. After visiting relatives and old friends in DC I came home by way of New Orleans then the southern route
back to Orange county. Needless to say I am sold on train travel. Since then I have made many train trips. I have traveled cross country at least 30 times with at least one thirty day visit to the Chesapeake Bay every fall. From here to Chicago I have traveled every route.
Not only from LA but also from Seattle and Emeryville as well as the route through New Orleans.
I ran out of space. Here is a short part 2. Because of the number of orbits the earth has made around the sun with me as a passenger (almost 90) I haven't made a trip in the last 3 years. I hadn't heard of this train or this route. Imagine my surprise when I saw the picture of scenery from the area I grew up, and see a train on what I thought to be an abandoned or rarely used track. Growing up in Moab, I never would have dreamed it would be a tourist train destination.
From Moab also and this was news to me. It looks incredible. I've lived all through these areas Utah/Colorado over the years but seeing it by rail would be a trip to remember

Jeb. Thank you for this wonderful post! I was aware of the Rocky Mountaineer train Vancouver to Banff and that is sort of on a bucket list. Now this additional train tour. Spectacular. Maybe you and Suzanne would do the Vancouver to Banff trip sometime.

I initially though this was the Canadian version of the Rocky Mountaineer (which I've seen a video of on another RUclips channel). This US version is news to me, and it's great that one can enjoy the mountain scenery on a luxury train without having to cross the Canadian border!
The scenery in Canada is more spectacular, especially the 3 day on the train from Jasper to Vancouver late in the season. It’s the best of the 3 routes! Fred

It's owned by the same Canadian company that runs the Rocky mountaineer in Canada. They started the US service in 2021, hopefully it works out for them.
COVID reintroduced me to RUclips. Nice Trane ride. I'm writing this mainly because I appreciated your comments of all the engineering and hard work involved in the conversation of the rail line. Such beautiful and productive people, places, and things should not be taken for granted.

It's really interesting to see a train ride that really is just so focused on the journey and not commutes; I'm from the Netherlands, so every time there was a stop due to a train passing or similar and you guys were stuck waiting and when Suzanne said ''This is just classic train travel, you just kinda sit and enjoy the journey'' it awakened such a Fear in me going ''No WHY are we stopping!!'' haha!
The same with a lot of the slow driving of the train throughout the video, I'm so used to sitting in the train every day to and from school proper dreading every time my train slows down or, heaven forbid, stops entirely!
I bet I'd be much more thankful for the slower pace if I was cruising through that beautiful scenery myself though! Ample time to get nice photos!
the rail experience you're used to only really exists in cities as the metro. theres a few longer commuter rail options out there but they arent nearly as dominant as they are in the EU and UK
In the USA, long distance trains all run on freight rails, single track except for the sidings. Freight is more profitable, so freight trains get the right of way.
This is changing, but very, very slowly. And sometimes politics gets in the way.
The American people NEED to support this and all train service! It’s really nice to ride and watch .

That's one of the things about the Gold Leaf cars, they max out the loading gauge on the North American rail network. From what I can see they are like the Gold Star cars in the Alaska Railroad.
