The Slow Mo Guys use this effect all the time, of course they have cameras that go far beyond the 60fps limit most end-user cameras have. About the bitrate, I have more than 8 years researching and using open source encoders and knowing how they work, X264 and FFmpeg for instance. Every camera out there use a hardware encoder, not a software encoder, this is for performance, mainly to reduce battery consumption and to have a predictable result, thus, having a fixed constant bitrate to allocate all the video data, GoPro HERO 4 Black and DJI Phantom 3 Pro use a 60Mbps bitrate no matter which setting you choose, the decision behind this is the flash card bandwidth and energy consumption, so, if you choose a smaller frame size or frame rate, it would have better image quality, but there is another factor with higher frame rates, the amount of light captured and the sensor sensibility. Casey Neistat tried to use 60fps some time ago and the results were bad, here is what happened... If you use a higher frame rate you make the shutter speed faster letting less light to reach the sensor, this introduces noise on less sensible sensors, that would not be a huge problem if you had a raw encoder, but H.264 compress video by losing extra information, one of the steeps of reduction of the encoder is to create a grid to look for areas that can be replaced by a single color square (macroblocks) and when it finds that there is some detail, it brake this block into smaller blocks in a recursive way until it finds it cannot longer replace that area with a big block, this is why video with a lot of noise consume more bandwidth and looks like a pixelated mess, look at H.264 video when it contains confetti falling, it is just a mess. Same happens with higher frame rate video that has a lot of noise. So, the trick to have a nice looking higher frame rate video is to have a lot of light and slow movements, this reduces the amount of information that has to be encoded, also notice that if you want to record someone jumping in slowmo, not moving the camera would help a lot because then the encoder would only store the deltaframes containing only the information of the subject moving trough the frame and not having to reencode the whole image. Another amazing video Frederick! So glad you talked about the 100mbps trade off when going from 30 to 60fps! A lot of people don't realize this and just assume 60fps is just that much better. A lot of people didn't like shooting 4k on the basic P4 and P3 because of the slower 60mbps, and recommended 2.7k. Do you think 100 is sufficient enough now with the P4P to warrant quality 4k footage at 24 or 30?
Awesome Fred. Do you know what the equivalent to the "interpret footage" operation would be in FCPX? Also, time ramping in FCPX is a whole lot easier IMHO. Thanks!
You seem to forget that 4k DCI is over four times the amount of data of 1080p. 1080p@120fps is about the same datarate as 4k@25fps though, so you're not actually "stressing" the codec particularly, especially since 100mbit H.265 is about the same as 200mbit H.264. You should be more worried about pushing for usable latitude, as the log modes can't accommodate for that DR. You have the range, but not the latitude, and the colours will break up immediately you try anything more than moderate HSL-processing. 120fps will look good if you push for making everything look as good as possible while recording, even tho it requires more experience and experimentation with settings for any given environment and lightning. Btw, the Phantom 4 had to crop on the sensor to film120fps, the P4P does not.

I'm a relatively new owner of a P4P+ and have found your videos to be an excellent source for someone like myself - more into photography and video than a remote control enthusiast - although they're a lot of fun to fly! My question is around time-lapse - which I think this video touches on but am wondering if you've had any luck with the interval photo setting vs. taking extended video that could later be sped or ramped up for capturing things like sunsets, etc. without to much jerkiness? I know wind obviously plays a factor and then post production stabilization options using FCPX or Adobe Premiere Pro CC are also important - curious about using a drone for this type of shoot - maybe even an idea for a future tutorial? Thanks for the kind words. No, once the footage is shot in 30fps the only way to get it (at 100% speed) in 24fps is to re-render the entire clip converting it from 30 to 24.

Roger that. If DaVinci doesn't have a reinterpret footage settings. Leave the footage as is by slow it down on the timeline. Bottom line is that the footage shot is over-cranked at 60 or 120 fps. So... slowing down 60fps to around 40% speed should, in theory, provide the same effect. The last thing you want to do is try to slow down footage that's only shot at 24fps. 50% speed of this would result in 12 frames per second giving you that stutter look to the motion. Hope this makes sense.
Yep, makes total sense. I probably need to invest in a better drone before I can do this since the Mavic currently doesn't handle the faster fps very well from what I understand. To you point the camera on the Mavic has much less processing power than the P4P so it is not going to handle the higher FPS very well.
I was excited about the P4P doing 4K60P until I tried it. The result is a noticeably muddy picture as compared to 30P. I've since reserved 4K60P for slo mo-only.

Honestly...it's either or. 4K is much larger so it's going to use more Mb/s than 2.7K. 2.7K shoots a little lower bit-rate than 4K so it's a toss up. I prefer to use 2.7K for over cranked slow mo because it's physical smaller. I edit everything on a 1080 timeline so 2.7K footage on a 1080 timeline is much faster, better playback etc. than 4K on a 1080 timeline. Hope this helps.

How will the video perform if you shot it at 2.7 60 fps and you just placed it on a timeline that is set for 24 fps, but you don't interpret it, will it still be in slow motion or does it not play back? Great question. When you place say... footage shot at 60fps on a 24fps timeline the application assimilates the footage to the timeline setting of 24. It will play at normal speed just like the natural 24fps clips next to it. The application simply drops the "unneeded" frames as it plays back. (Over 50% of them.) The only issue is you may see strange small movement glitches in the motion. BTW: For some strange reason placing 30fps footage on a 24fps timeline is really noticeable. I'm assuming that's because 30 is so close to 24 the app has to randomly decide which 6 random frames to throw out in one second... giving the weird jump or stager in the motion.
No not really. You can swivel the camera 360º but it's the same camera as I understand it. The X5S? More impressive but not for higher frame rates. Shoot in Apple ProRes 5.2K: 5280×2160 - 23.976/24/25/29.97p, 422 HQ @1.3Gbps 4K: 3840×2160 - 23.976/24/25/29.97p, 422 HQ @900Mbps 1.3Gbps and 900Mbps is a staggering amount of bit rate coming in that cameras sensor for Non-RAW footage! BUT for ramping and slo-mo over-cranked footage, you'd have to go with the h.264 codec at only 100Mbps...just like the P4Pro.

So, what are your thoughts on 60fps in shooting in 4K? As good as 2k? I shoot a lot of video of our hiking trips in Tennessee, and love to shoot waterfalls in 60fps. I've always done it in 2K on the GoPro 4, but would like to start in 4K at 60 since the newest phantom offers that. Also...(this is really random)...I'm a huge fan of ambient music. What have you got playing during your editing demo at 6:10?

I'm watching again this video because i need to real accelerate a P3 video from 30 to 60 fps, but when creating a new sequence without importing directly a video into the timeline, i see many "default" settings like ARRI, RED or CANON... do you know wich of these settings fits better with my phantom .mov videos ? Hey Simone. Those are all just presets for size and frame rate. I'd use one of those to start with then alter the settings to your desired frame rate, output size, etc.
Yeah... me too...It's supposed to be able to...but it isn't yet. Premiere Pro can handle h.265 but for some reason it can't handle DJI's H.265 codec. I think the issue is with DJI's codec....not Premiere.
But does the p4p shoot 1080p 120fps at 100mbps? Have you checked it? I know the mavic shoots 4k at 60mbps but at 2,7k it drops to 40mbps, at 1080 60fps mavic shoots horribly at 20mbps
Great point. I looked into this when to my eyes the 2.7K 60fps "looked" better than the 4K 60fps. 2.7K 60 shoots at 100Mb/s on the P4Pro. 4K 60 also shoots at 100Mb/s. BUT... 2.7K looks better, renders and processes better....literally because of the smaller physical frame size utillizing the SAME 100Mb/s of allocated processing power! 2720×1530 pixels getting 100Mb/s of processing power will produce higher quality video than a roughly 26% larger (3840×2160) pixel area with the same 100Mb/s of processing power. Hope this makes sense...gave me a headache trying to type this where it made sense! LOL.
Frederick Hagan thnx, oh yes makes sense here :) i know how things work :) like on the mavic people keep saying 2.7k 24fps is the way to go but at 45mb/s its acually more compressed than 4k 24fps, at 2.7k 24 you only get about 1800kb per frame but at 4k 24fps you get about 2500kb per frame, i always thought 4k looked better compressed on the mavic (oh i also i never changed from art si ive always used art) and dji added art back now with the latest ios update :)
Hi Fredrick, Using FCP 10.3 I'm trying to find the equivalent of Interpret footage/assume frame rate but seem to be failing. To test a FCP feature I've reduced some footage at 30fps to 25% speed and yes it was so choppy it's unusable. I used Video quality/optical flow which took a fair time to process but I have to say that the result was super smooth. Problem being if I my project on a 30fps timeline and drop a 60fps clip onto it for slowing down, the 60fps clip will get degraded when dropped on the 30fps timeline, so this feature isn't really helping that much unless the entire project is at 60fps. Have you any thoughts although I know you do favour Prem Pro. Many thanks again for your help as it is most appreciated. this this Drone is a win for Dji..I sure was thinking bout getting the inspire 2 with the X4S cam is there really a big difference in the two????

I'm watching again this video because i need to real accelerate a P3 video from 30 to 60 fps, but when creating a new sequence without importing directly a video into the timeline, i see many "default" settings like ARRI, RED or CANON... do you know wich of these settings fits better with my phantom .mov videos ? Thanks in advance !
Hey Simone. Those are all just presets for size and frame rate. I'd use one of those to start with then alter the settings to your desired frame rate, output size, etc.

H.265 is still tricky. Waiting for Adobe to do an update to Premiere Pro.

Yeah... me too...It's supposed to be able to...but it isn't yet. Premiere Pro can handle h.265 but for some reason it can't handle DJI's H.265 codec. I think the issue is with DJI's codec....not Premiere.

what if you are in PAL shooting at 50fps.. which value do you type in to slow it down? 25 instead of 29.97?

But does the p4p shoot 1080p 120fps at 100mbps? Have you checked it? I know the mavic shoots 4k at 60mbps but at 2,7k it drops to 40mbps, at 1080 60fps mavic shoots horribly at 20mbps
Great point. I looked into this when to my eyes the 2.7K 60fps "looked" better than the 4K 60fps. 2.7K 60 shoots at 100Mb/s on the P4Pro. 4K 60 also shoots at 100Mb/s. BUT... 2.7K looks better, renders and processes better....literally because of the smaller physical frame size utillizing the SAME 100Mb/s of allocated processing power! 2720×1530 pixels getting 100Mb/s of processing power will produce higher quality video than a roughly 26% larger (3840×2160) pixel area with the same 100Mb/s of processing power. Hope this makes sense...gave me a headache trying to type this where it made sense! LOL.
Frederick Hagan thnx, oh yes makes sense here :) i know how things work :) like on the mavic people keep saying 2.7k 24fps is the way to go but at 45mb/s its acually more compressed than 4k 24fps, at 2.7k 24 you only get about 1800kb per frame but at 4k 24fps you get about 2500kb per frame, i always thought 4k looked better compressed on the mavic (oh i also i never changed from art si ive always used art) and dji added art back now with the latest ios update :)

I think that in another video he said that a recent firmware update had fixed or helped the issue that kept him from pulling the trigger.
Hi Fredrick, Using FCP 10.3 I'm trying to find the equivalent of Interpret footage/assume frame rate but seem to be failing. To test a FCP feature I've reduced some footage at 30fps to 25% speed and yes it was so choppy it's unusable. I used Video quality/optical flow which took a fair time to process but I have to say that the result was super smooth. Problem being if I my project on a 30fps timeline and drop a 60fps clip onto it for slowing down, the 60fps clip will get degraded when dropped on the 30fps timeline, so this feature isn't really helping that much unless the entire project is at 60fps. Have you any thoughts although I know you do favour Prem Pro. Many thanks again for your help as it is most appreciated.
On another note I tried something totally different for the first time with the P4P. I think unusual is the word...
