Some call it a red devil. It's name is really a Midas Ciclid. I had one as a pet for 15 yrs. he would act just like this little guy. His name was Junior. I had him in a 100gal aquarium. He had a fine gravel bottom. Nothing else alive could go in there with him. But he had a golf ball that he would play with. He would follow me from inside his tank. Lol. I would take him for walks in a 10gal bucket. He loved it. I miss him. They make great pets.
I noticed he makes small flicks with his thumb at the water everytime the fish gets thrown, almost insinuating food falling onto the surface. Pretty smart way of catching the fish's attention.
I was thinking that too. But then the fish let's him hold him and pet his side and likes being tossed up it seems. So the fish isn't just about wanting food
I once had a mudskipper that would hop into my hand and I could walk around the house with it. It would also take food right from my fingers. I enjoyed the interaction very much, and wish they could breed in captivity. Until that happens, I won't have another one. They do make very engaging pets, but I don't wish to deplete the wild population.
Connection is both rewarding and devastating. I've brought several animals through a lifespan, and I'll always miss them but it was wonderful to have them.
To people who think this harms the fish, the fish's slime coating is unaffected when handled with wet hands, it is only when it is grabbed with dry hands that it harms it.
When you're fishing and you catch and release with dry hands, and partially wet hands like if you take it out with your fingers but you put it on your palm, you know. It fucks them up

Kimberly Patton The fish wasn't trusting a human. It was being tricked by insect-like motions the man was making with his hands. The fish was looking for a meal. If you think that I'm wrong, then ask yourself why the fish wasn't swimming up to the man's hand when he was only swishing it underwater. If it trusted the man so much and enjoyed the game so much then it would have swam back to the hand every time regardless of hand movements. It only did it when the bubbling motion was being used (imitating an insect on the water).
My first fish George, a goldfish, was much like this big old guy. I had him in a fishbowl and had to transfer him from one bowl, to another, when I had to clean his bowl. I had him for 3 years and over time, he got used to me grabbing onto him and he got to where he wanted me to play tag with him. I could even pick him up and kiss him on his head. He was the beginning of me training other fish to play with me. I have had about 7 fish, over the years, of different species, that would let me play with them. I think even fish get bored, just looking out of the glass and swimming in circles. My favorite play fish, besides my original goldfish, would be this red-tipped shark fish and one plecostomus. I had these two together and believe it, or not, these two even played, kind of, with each other. The two loved me playing and petting them gently. They didn't play tag, though, like George did. I have had a hard time convincing others that some of my fish like human contact and like to play with me, but, this video PROVES that some fish do love their humans. =)

LOL Bomb! Your plecostomus is possibly just a recluse and doesn't want any company or playmates. Most of mine are that way, too, unfortunately. I hardly ever use a net to catch my fish and use my hands most of the time, so maybe touching them often is the key to eventual friendship. Just a guess. Training fish is pretty easy and fun. I'm surprised this one likes being thrown but all fish are pretty playful and enjoy being social. Which for us, means petting them. You can train them to come meet you at the surface of water by tapping it or making some kind of disturbance like he did and then rewarding them with food. You can then get them used to your hands and manipulation, including petting and playing. Depending on the type of fish, it might bite you so be wary of that. Not to be mean, but because it's seeing if you're food or if you want to play, kinda like how a cat bats at things. (or also maybe to be mean. Some fish are mean) But you can do this with a goldfish in a bowl, no special fish type necessary.
It's a talent some people are born with, animal whisperer, horse whisperer, fish etc. Animals ADORE me I have no explanation for it. Vicious biting dogs start whining and wanting to be pet, insects alight on me, mice sit and chew next to me, birds talk to me, stray cats find me. It's just a gift some people have.

We had a large oscar a lot like this at an aquarium shop I used to work at. It would come to the surface, let us pick him up out of the water, and seemed to enjoy having his scales stroked. He would also chase sticks we'd run back and forth over the surface of the water. It was the only fish I'd seen do that until now.

If you think that I'm wrong, then ask yourself why the fish wasn't swimming up to the man's hand when he was only swishing it underwater. If it trusted the man so much and enjoyed the game so much then it would have swam back to the hand every time regardless of hand movements. It only did it when the bubbling motion was being used (imitating an insect on the water).

My first fish George, a goldfish, was much like this big old guy. I had him in a fishbowl and had to transfer him from one bowl, to another, when I had to clean his bowl. I had him for 3 years and over time, he got used to me grabbing onto him and he got to where he wanted me to play tag with him. I could even pick him up and kiss him on his head. He was the beginning of me training other fish to play with me. I have had about 7 fish, over the years, of different species, that would let me play with them. I think even fish get bored, just looking out of the glass and swimming in circles. My favorite play fish, besides my original goldfish, would be this red-tipped shark fish and one plecostomus. I had these two together and believe it, or not, these two even played, kind of, with each other. The two loved me playing and petting them gently. They didn't play tag, though, like George did. I have had a hard time convincing others that some of my fish like human contact and like to play with me, but, this video PROVES that some fish do love their humans. =)

LOL Bomb! Your plecostomus is possibly just a recluse and doesn't want any company or playmates. Most of mine are that way, too, unfortunately. I hardly ever use a net to catch my fish and use my hands most of the time, so maybe touching them often is the key to eventual friendship. Just a guess. Training fish is pretty easy and fun. I'm surprised this one likes being thrown but all fish are pretty playful and enjoy being social. Which for us, means petting them.
You can train them to come meet you at the surface of water by tapping it or making some kind of disturbance like he did and then rewarding them with food. You can then get them used to your hands and manipulation, including petting and playing.
Depending on the type of fish, it might bite you so be wary of that. Not to be mean, but because it's seeing if you're food or if you want to play, kinda like how a cat bats at things. (or also maybe to be mean. Some fish are mean)
But you can do this with a goldfish in a bowl, no special fish type necessary.

It's a talent some people are born with, animal whisperer, horse whisperer, fish etc. Animals ADORE me I have no explanation for it. Vicious biting dogs start whining and wanting to be pet, insects alight on me, mice sit and chew next to me, birds talk to me, stray cats find me. It's just a gift some people have.

We had a large oscar a lot like this at an aquarium shop I used to work at. It would come to the surface, let us pick him up out of the water, and seemed to enjoy having his scales stroked. He would also chase sticks we'd run back and forth over the surface of the water. It was the only fish I'd seen do that until now.
