Brian, as my Dad use to say, "A drop of oil makes the world go around!" Always feels good getting rid of the old and putting in the new. Hoping that bike takes you to great places for a long while. Thanks for Sharing!
Good Deal. 20K between changes huh? I do mine every other oil change. 6 to 8k miles. ( I also dont run synIII or red line) 85-140 Mobile One in my trans and primary has been doing better for me in the desert heat. Anyway, Hope you two get to ride soon. Mine's off getting new tires put on so.... Stay Safe, Stay Warm You Two.
I'm with you on the redline gear oil. I have an 07 FLSTC with 37k on it. I did the three hole service at 35k because I didn't know when the last service was. Went with the syn and the trans was noisy! After researching the redline seems to be one of the top choices so I changed to it after about 500 miles and the trans noise almost went away. Redline synthetic for the win. Love your channel, keep up the good work!
Good video, keep it simple. I run Amsoil in my transmission, but each to their own.I think the main point is to use quality oil and change at regular intervals.
Does the oring on the drain plug need to be changed every time the oils changed. I don't think ever replaced a oring on my harley transmission drain plug
@@roadking681 I've stuck with the Harley formula + and honestly really like it. At one point I was going to switch to redline since it's a bit easier for me to get but since the formula + has been working well, I decided not to rock the boat.
Only thing you missed for newbies you told them what to use to take fill plug out but NOT which socket to use to remove under motor...I think it;s a 5/8?
I checked the tranny fluid on a 08 Streetglide i bought. After putting maybe 2k miles on i checked it and i could barely see it it was so clear. It registered but it was like it was brand new. Guy said he changed it before i bought it, but it literally looks brand new. I was expecting some color. Im guessing he maybe used syn 3.
Hard to say. Syn3 is just motor oil so it has the typical amber color but it is slightly more clear. That’s another reason I like the redline, I know it’s there lol
my owners manual and factory service manual both say do not screw in dip stick and check on the jiffy stand. 2007 electra with a 96ci. So who's correct ?
Always trust your owners manual over some random person on RUclips. 😀 I'm definitely no professional but this has worked for me for 50,000 miles without issue. I typically don't have a helper available when I'm doing this sort of stuff so you just have to do what works best in your situation. For me, that's checking it on the stand and rolling with it.
I've stuck with the formula stuff for primary so far. I was going to switch but I read a lot of reviews about the clutch slipping a bit with it. Maybe I'll try it eventually.
@@hookdog8640 The bolt has threads missing for breather my guess a proper shim after oring will give it no where to squish out. FLH cop bikes here replaced that bolt as washer was lost in changes.
Gear oil in a gear box makes since to me, I'm gonna give the vtwin formula a try.....finding neutral is a bitch! And I'm ready for Tran anyway ....good video
I have a 2011 SG 103. TSB says only add 28oz and check it on the side stand, screwed in, just touching the o-ring at ambient temp… e.g. room temp. That’s the correct reading. The 2011 manual is not correct as it says do not screw it in and add 32 oz. The TSB was because oil was leaking out of the shift shaft seal so they cut it down to 28oz and screwed in at room temp to put the level right between the arrows on the dip stick. It puts it right between the arrows on the dip stick every time on mine. All bikes, even the same exact year, are slightly different. Check the dip stick. I use Belray 80W-90 Hypoid Gearsaver specifically made for motorcycles. Quiet and shifts nice. History at the dealer shows 2X or more the life of the trans on customer bikes that ride the hell out of them 40-50K miles a year. Just an observation. Buy a torque wrench. $35 on Amazon. While your at it buy liquid Teflon for pipe thread and clean the bolt good with brake clean, add it, used a new o-ring and oil the o-ring a drop to keep it from tearing on torque. Set between the arrows on the dip stick. No higher or lower at room temp. I use 17ft lbs on all drain plugs. Never had an issue.

Good Video! just picked up a super low mileage 2011 Electra Glide Classic. I'm no mechanic at all and the video shows me I can do it!
Great to see you working on the bike-it will be riding season soon!

Good job Brian
I agree transmissions need gear oil not engine oil!!
quick and easy, i have heard nothing but good about the redline transmission oil
Good informative video guys!! Thanks
Hello,
Great video, Thanks. I have questions tho. as for the dip stick do you check that while on the side stand or bike level on lift? Thanks
I've been using nothing but Redline. Great oil.

No. You’re “supposed” to but don’t really need to. Eventually it will get hard and brittle from the heat cycles though.
That Red Line tomato sauce is good stuff!!!
Great video !! Keep it up
Looking good guys be safe out there your buddy from Oxford
Very nice!
Thanks for the video bro
@@jamesflurry4316 yes sir! Hope it helped!
Did u not stand bike upright to get all the oil?
What kind/brand of oil do u use in your primary?? please respond?? thank you

The dipstick needs a shim washer to stop shearing in the partial thread slot on bolt.
i have a 2017 limited touring, i do my oil sometimes and my transmission. the transmission is more easier. do u have a oil change for the harley?
I do! ruclips.net/video/rvccTd9snxg/видео.htmlsi=NNWv_r1tIqiTH_hi
Your timer cover is pretty kick ass man.
Tribodyn makes some damn good oil as well. The gear oil is really good. Check it out man.
Thanks! I have a matching derby cover, it adds a nice touch. I'll check that stuff out thanks!
You make it simple for me to change it on my 1999 Electra glide thanks 👍🏽

You got it!
My transmission drain plug is on the left side, pointed downward. 2017 harley touring limited.
Yeah there will be some variations between your M8 and my twin cam. Always follow your owners manual for capacities and any other specifics as well.

How many miles do you put on primary oil. Is it redline also?

@@LifeontheBlacktop My experience, stay with formula . Tech thought I wanted Red Line. Clutch slipped immediately.
I always use a liquid thread sealant. Mine tears as well.

I’m a Amsoil fan. They had engine oil, primary oil, and Transmission oil. I haven’t seen anything negative Amsoil. Check out Amsoil on RUclips
How dar you not run engine oil in transportation transmission! You keel that motycyle. 😅
Anyone best price will buy in bulk or whatever thanks
Well done. Thanks for a good video.
You dont screw at the end to ckeck the level, must be unscrew.
Service manual says to screw in up to the o ring, I'm sat reading it right now.
Harley manual for my my 2006 flhti says check with bike level and dipstick resting on threads
