Could you possibly make a video series on finding the source of air bubbles in the return jets? I don't have any suction leaks going off of your informational videos.
Another great video. A small question please. If the pressure breach in the pipework is near the pool house and the pipe is above the water line in the pool you test will not work? It will only leak when the pump is much water under pressure to these outlet jets? Doe this sound sensible?
@@laapulsford If you have a pressure leak the pool will leak more when the pump is running. If you turn off the pump you can plug the returns and mark the water level in the pool. If the water level is holding 24 hrs later, then you more than likely have a leak in the return line. Thanks for watching.
Hello Mark, thanks for the leak video series! This is what I needed to get started narrowing down what happens to the water in my below ground pool. Regarding the products you mention, any special concerns for a salt water pool?
Mark, Great videos! I have water leaking out of the backwash, but I don’t have a multi port valve as described in your video. Can it look different or maybe called something else?
Thank you for the educational videos. I have a return on the pool with a loose housing. If I attempt to turn the eyeball fitting to remove it makes the entire housing move. So to remove it I had to use a tool to grip the housing while turning the fitting. There are no screws holding the housing in so I believe it is a pressure fit line. Can this be a potential cause of a leak? I have had this pool for 7 years and this is the first time I ran into this problem while opening the pool.
It sounds like it is broke, you may want to get a pool professional to take a look. They may be able to seal it but they will probably have to replace the whole fitting.
Appreciate these videos. Thanks. I am a first time pool owner, trying to rescue my in-ground. Just installed a new sand filter and pump. Issue I'm having is I can fill my pool level to the skimmer line , and it stays there with the system off. But once I run the pump / filter the level drops below the skimmer. Definitely thinking I have a return line leak . I don't have any slides or waterfalls or anything. Just a in and out line.
Sounds like a return leak. Turn off the system and plug your returns, mark the water level and check in 24 hrs. to confirm. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Hi, As new pool owner i would like to thankyou for your informational videos. My pool set up is bit different than what you have in your videos. There is only one incoming pipe feeding into the motor unlike yours where there are 2 pipes , one from Schimmer & other from drain. The motor is connected to filter & is in turn connect to heater. There is a pipe coming out of heater & splitting into 2 pipes with valvels for each. Not sure why there are 2 valves/pipes for outbound/pressure pipes. Please advise...
The line going back to the pool is a pressure line (return). More than likely the other line that tees off the return is a water feature like deck jets or you have jets in your steps. If you have any questions feel free to contact me I will be glad to help.
Great video's. I let my water level get below the skimmer box to see if the skimmer or drain might be the cause of my leak. Lose an inch a day. After the water level got below the skimmer box, no more leak. Looks like a crack on the bottom of the box. Now I can't find those schmear pellets you talk about......Do you sell them? Thanks..
I have a 66 litre pool and after a cyclone it’s not vacuuming strongly . One return jet is stronger than the other. Suction is low after a couple of minutes. Would this be my spider gasket problem?
I narrowed my swimming pool leak down to the spa. There are four return line jets in the spa. The return jet closest to the pump (thirty feet away) pours a little sand into the spa. The next jet pours a very small amount of sand into the spa. Very, very little. The next two pool return jets further from the pump do not put sand into the soa. I am thinking that a fitting on the return pool jet closest to the pump is cracked. Im thinking that this fitting is close to the spa wall. I want to cut the concrete deck by the first return to the pool to repair the pvc fitting just behind the wall myself. I am confident doing this as long as I know I am probably on the right track. Any thoughts? Do you think that i am on the right track?
I would recommend to watch part 1 of this series "How to find a leak like a pro". This should help, it is a process of elimination to determine the type of leak that you have (structural, suction or pressure). There are a lot of unanswered questions at this time and I need more information. If you would like to check out my patreon page I will be glad to help and go into more detail on this issue. Hello mark...I am at my wits end..help...my pool is leaking only when running..we did drain check...we did skimmer check...nothing... I plugged return line now ...no leak but the pool doesn't leak anyway when off so how can I tell if it is the return line..I live in a small town and can't find anybody to check it..what now??
@@HallmarkPoolSuppliesI have the exact same issue. My pool doesn't lose any water (except evaporation) when the system is not running. But here 0:57 you're saying pressure leaks are leaks in pools that happen to leak more when they're ON as opposed to when they're OFF. And you suggest capping return jets and checking after 24 hours if it's gonna lose water!.. How could this make sense, I can't understand!? Bcs, the water level doesn't drop down already during the system is off, so even if the returns are disabled or not, it's not gonna lose water in either situation So, how can this way help us to come up with a decision?.. I've watched tons of videos regarding pool leaks but couldn't find one giving a reasonable logic especially for running pool leaks. You're the best one explaining all details professionally but there is something tricky regarding running pool leaks you forgot to mention I guess. Thanks for your time!..
Update: I've found that one of the likely pressure leaks is the backwash turn valve leak, which may have been caused by a worn-out or improperly placed spider gasket. In other words, before I changed the spider gasket (which I discovered after wasting hours figuring out other potential causes), I noted a loss of around 1/2 inch via the backwash line. Then it came to an abrupt halt. A small note of clarification.
Hi, Mark. Using the bucket test, I am 100% sure the pool has stopped leaking. The current water level is about 4 inches below the skimmer line. The pool only loses water if the pump runs. According to your videos, I have a pressure leak. There is no sense plugging up the return lines because there is no loss of water if the pump doesn't run. I started digging near one of the skimmers where the grass is green and luscious. The ground in that particular area is extremely moist. I am in Arlington, Texas where the temperature has been 100 degrees almost everyday for the past month. The ground is hard and dry everywhere. I stopped digging after about 14 inches down because I don't know how deep the pipes are buried. Can you give me some insight on how far down the pressure lines might be?
I have a leak, and we shut down our pool and blew out lines and plugged every return. I have lost 10 inches of water in 8 days, but the leakage stopped when it hit my pool sweep return, although it is plugged from when we shut down the pool. Could there be a crack in the pipe at the pool sweep return? I need help!
It is possible, what type of pool do you have? (Concrete, vinyl, or fiberglass) I have several questions if you would like to contact me I will be glad to help. You can contact me by phone or through my patreon page.
Hi Mark - I can't quite wrap my head around the determination of a pressure leak. My pool definitely leaks when the pump is running. When the pool is off, I lose zero water. Now, what exactly does capping the return lines do for me? I already know the pool doesn't leak when the pool is off and I obviously can't turn the pool on when the returns are capped.
It sounds like you have a pressure leak, when the pool is off you would still leak, but a lot less. When plugging the returns your system would be off, and now we can isolate the returns from the pool. You want to mark the water level and check in 24 hrs, by doing this it will help confirm if you have a pressure leak. If you have any questions feel free to contact me I will be glad to help.
I have the same question. I don’t understand how plugging the return with the pool off helps find the issue if I already know there is little to no loss with the pool off. Please help?
I have separate Jandy valves for each of the skimmers, the drain line, the return lines, and the spa return. Why can't I just use these valves to isolate the leak rather than go to the trouble of using the 1.5" plugs? Assuming the Jandy valves aren't leaking, that is.
If you close off the drain, return or skimmer lines by use of the valve and you have a leak in any of these lines you will still lose water. Closing lines down by using your valves at the system will not stop a leak or determine which line is leaking, if you have a leak in one of these lines. Thanks for watching.
