So when Lunge and Tenma finally have their long conversation (blood loss kind of cut this one short) how exactly do you think it's going to go? As always our mods will pass on any comments they feel we should see :D
Let me just say that yes the show has rewatchability. Many of us are rewatching it with you and enjoying it just as much. Right now we're in a bit of a slow area so it can lead to you wondering if you would ever rewatch a series like this, but stick with it guys, you are doing a great job.
Also, I would say that Monster IS a thriller series, however it's ALSO a methodical psychological series as well. A story of this length couldn't maintain the pace on a normal thriller all the time. So, instead, it slows down at points, gives you a chance to breath and think before picking back up again. For example, this episode alone had some really thrilling and even scary moments, especially when I first saw it. But, we've been having some slow episodes as well. It's going to be picking up soon again, it just takes patience.
4195phoenix Great thing you guys caught the parallels with Lunge and Inspector Javert haha! Also Lunge’s relentlessness, like the Joker “I think you and I are destined to do this forever.” And “You complete me”
Maaaan I love Lunge, it's just hard to accept you're wrong when you've pretty much never been... May I add, his reasoning is perfectly correct, he's a computer trying to solve a puzzle, he reasons on facts and probably is the most down to earth man ever which just illustrates how unfathomable of an evil johan can be, it can only be fantasy right :) ?
It's like a computer trying to finish a jigsaw puzzle, it matches all holes and finishes... but the image on top doesn't match. It's like Lunge wasn't given the right pieces and this is what came out of it
Ah, I'm glad you are beginning to catch on Caleb about the "reveal" of Johan having a split personality. It's not as easy as all that and that's what Dr. Gillen was trying to point out in his episode a few episodes ago. You really need to pay attention to what he said about psychopaths like Johan being extrremely good liars and how they can manipulate any situation to make it seem like truth even if it is a complete and utter lie. This will be something you have to remember from here on out.
I'm rewatching this with you guys (previous time was a while back) and it's still enjoyable. TBH I don't find that the non-Johan episodes are filler; to me they would only be filler if they don't add to the main storyline or themes. Like you guys said, Monster is very much a theme-focused show, and these eps add a lot of layers to the storytelling. Calling these fillers would be like saying that anything non-sponge in a cake is filler. Yes, strictly speaking, stuff like the buttercream/frosting/ganache aren't "cake" material, but they add so much to the experience that removing them would make the cake a very different product. When they make that much of an impact, it's kinda unfair to call them fillers, isn't it?
There's no much to explain, really; I personally like the characters, their evolution, and every little detail that comes in place little by little. You surely miss a lot the first time.
And honestly, there are some scenes that are worth to rewatch so much. Especially in the second half of the story. I understand not everyone would rewatch a series of 74 episodes, but it's really worth it every once in a while.
I've certainly rewatched this show. The first time I watched it was with my sister since she is a huge fan of Urasawa's work. Then I rewatched it when we recommended it to our mother, and now I'm rewatching it with you, guys. So yeah, it's a work to be rewatch, specially since it's pretty complex, at least for me, so watching it more than one time helped me to comprehend and understand it better.
A great episode, I'm glad you too made the connection between Lunge and Javert. I too thought of that Les Miz character when I first met the guy. The part about Lunge having to never believe that he is wrong will come up later.
Watching this much later, so this is a bit late, but I have revisited Monster several times, in manga and anime format. It lends itself really well to repeat viewings/readings, with how packed with great themes and matetial it is.
Just answering the question you posed at the end. Yes I've rewatched the series and I'm rewatching it with you right now. However I watched the series when I was young and its been so long that I can barely remember what happened. I just remember the series being a good one and the (exsuse my French) mindfuck of an ending. Basically its like I'm watching the series all over again but from a different perspective (there are a lot of details that I never noticed the first time I watched monster. Its...almost like a different show.) They do say that the brain doesn't really remember experiences but the emotions of that experience so it could have something to do with that..... Either way I'm glad you've decided to react to this series. It really is underrated.
Lunge could 100% solve the Kira case. The whole riding a hunch till the end thing, yeah he'd get Light narrowed down in like a week, would probably nail the complex too. Shame this isn't the Kira case
Lunge is really really interesting character 🤪 At first I kinda dont know about him much but now he's my favorite character 😊😊😊 Now whenever he show up I got excited !!!
I ship the Lunge/Eva alliance. I'm rewatching with you guys for the character development and theories but I don't think I could rewatch such a long series otherwise.
Kurt Rustle "geh" would actually be a long "eh" I think. Closer would probably be Lung-guh or something. Speak "luhng" as in "baloon" with an attached g and then "eh" pronounced like a regular "the" without th. Not a long eh like "hay" or "Meh." So (loon)"luhng"(the)"eh"-"luhnge". That's the closest you will get without actually pronouncing it the German way. And other than the lunge/runge difference, it's also the same vowel pronunciation as the Japanese ルンゲ (Lunge)
Lunge has now started to manipulate people for his personal gain. I think his character is meant to be similar to Tenmas ex on purpose. Whom also manipulated people. Introducing these characters who have manipulated people so that we can compare them to Johan and why we think he's a monster. If you don't think Lunge and Tenmas ex are monsters then Johan can't be one because of his manipulation of people. If you don't think the Soldier, the Hitman, or Mueller are monsters for killing then Johan is a monster for something different.
So when Lunge and Tenma finally have their long conversation (blood loss kind of cut this one short) how exactly do you think it's going to go? As always our mods will pass on any comments they feel we should see :D

4195phoenix is monster in the best 10 or 20 animes you guys have ever watched? if it isnt dont worry it will be

Lunge be like "Notice me tenma senpai" 😂

Yeah but in last episode even that detective with some other investigation managed to...
"When you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes back into you "
Lunge is an amazing character, he will develop his personality a lot more during the series, one of my favorite characters in Monster for sure.
Matheus Pimentel lunge and our special spy pal :)
and dont forget about the magnificient steiner
The magnificent steiner is actually my favorite one haha, can't wait for him to show up
Lunge is my favourite cop in all of anime.

What you said about Lunge in these scenes being like Darth Vader is so true. A very awesome way to think about this.
I watched Monster by myself then I rewatched it with 3 different reactors and I'm rewatching it now with you guys ^^ THAT'S HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS SHOW
from wich reactors did you watch it.

Guys, you aren't even halfway through the story; it's difficult to explain why you would rewatch the show now, but you'll understand soon.
Vladimira I have finished Monster, what is the reason for rewatch?
Vladimira Explain yourself
Condor Like?...

few episodes away from "Would you like a drink?"

Trust me when the thriller aspects do resurface again, you'll not be prepared....

I rewatched this show for around 5 times now. It's a good watch especially while working on stuffs.

Wow Jacob....
jacob's shirt is amazing!

Guys, please read this. Lunge's name is pronounced "Loon-gay".
Does it really matter ?
Redouane Sama Red nope
They're calling him "Lung" when that's not his name. It's like calling Princess Leia "Lee-ah".
if loons could be gay that is
Kurt Rustle "geh" would actually be a long "eh" I think. Closer would probably be Lung-guh or something.

love your reactions but it triggers me your pronunciation of Lunge
It's "Luung-ay" not "lung"
Comment ;P
I'm the only one who hates Lunge?
Giovanne Fell You'll love him later
No really, I finished monster years ago...
Giovanne Fell Why?
Giovanne Fell in the final episodes I was cheering for Lunge so hard. I can't understand how you could finish and dislike him.
