Guys, Guy Ritchie's "Revolver". You won't regret it. It's a little-known movie, but it's deep and gorgeous, and you'll see actor Jason Statham in an unusual dramatic role.
They both lost because they both forgot to account for the actions of outside forces. The same reason why in the first slowdown scene it doesn't go as planned.
One of my favorite shots in all of cinema is when Moriarty and Holmes are falling and Moriarty is screaming in absolute fury and terror while Holmes is utterly serene. It is such a powerful visual to me
Fun fact: There are several videos on RUclips that actually play out their full chess match when they stop moving the pieces. It actually does result in a checkmate. I thought that was a great detail that showed they took great care in that scene and it’s definitely one of the best scenes in the movie.
Couple things I remember because of those YT videos, but not with enough detail. It's actually based on a real game that was played between masters, but with a different final endgame. Also, there were one or two spoken moves that seemingly accidentally got cut out, but if you account for those, yup, it's a perfectly played game, exactly as they say it.
I’ll believe it when I see it. Actors say that all the time about shows and movies. The industry will just make another Fast and Furious movie or something instead…. 🤨
same thing was said by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, they will do 5th season of BBC Sherlock if their schedule allows it. and the season 4 is in 2017
I truly wonder how much input Gavin had, cuz a lot of HOW they filmed it is very like, signature style, of Gavin, but he was a phantom operator, so not sure how much say he had or if he was able to be like, 'well, what if we did it this way?'
The little subversion of expectation from the Cossack fight - Simza preempting Sherlock's planning by reacting spontaneously - comes back twice in the finale: first when Watson drops the glasses, and second when Sherlock stuns Moriarty with the pipe. Sometimes the only way to defeat an opponent that can anticipate your every move is to do the last thing they'd expect.
Fighting and drug addiction is cannon to the original Sherlock Holmes so it's pretty consistent in most remakes and yes, many many people think Sherlock is on the Spectrum and this is even mentioned in the BBC version, episode The Hond of Baskerville
In the original release of the first movie there is a different voice for Moriarty as he hadn't been cast yet for the second movie, but Harries was later dubbed into the digital version and later dvd/Blu-ray releases. So if you have a very very early dvd version you might have a different Moriaty voice.
That scene always made me laugh. Something about Watson saying "my NEW wife" as if that made his throwing her off the train so much worse. Just so funny.
Thankfully, "Where are you going, Stanley?!" was kept in. I saw this movie in theatres and that line still rattles around my brain. I'm so glad these guys appreciated it.
LET'S GOOOOO. This is one of those movies that definitely surpasses its predecessor. I'm glad you guys decided to watch it immediately after the first one.
These movies introduced me to the fictional world of Sherlock Holmes, which my school showed me at the auditorium at a young age. I had never heard of him before, and he is my favourite fictional character of all time. Please watch the BC series with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, they really modernised all the Sherlock Holmes short stories and novels by Arthur Conan Doyle. You can check out an anime called Moriarty the Patriot, focusing more on Moriarty, it is quite an amazing retelling and character study of the quote-unquote villain/antagonist.
The final fight scene taking place almost entirely in their minds is such a cool choice. They both knew how it'd end if both fought to win, the only choice Sherlock had was to force a draw - to make the selfless sacrifice: something Moriarty could never consider. It's very well done, a textbook example of a conflict with the "Dark Mirror" antagonist trope.
Yesss, so happy to see this one out so quickly! I loved these films. Btw, I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but two things: 1) Sherlock being a skilled fighter isn't actually a new take, that comes straight from the books. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle mentioned multiple times throughout the series that Sherlock was an expert fencer, pugilist (boxer), and baritsu artist (a kind of martial arts for the Victorian upper class where they fought with their cloaks, canes, and other fancy implements). 2) Jared Harris (Moriarty) is the son of THE Richard Harris, who you probably know best as the first Dumbledore.
That fall IS, as they say, "canon". It is how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle "rid" himself of the burden, as he had come to view it, of having to CONSTANTLY feed the voracious public appetite for tales of his most famous and infamous character. The public backlash to the duel/dual death plunge over the Reichenbach Falls, which BTW is real but sadly that "castle" is entirely CGI, with the publication of "The Final Problem" in 1893 resulted in the offices of The Strand magazine being inundated with HATE mail and TWENTY THOUSAND cancelled subscriptions😅 Ten years later Sir Arthur was working on another project and to his horror and dismay realized that the story he was writing wasn't working and the only man who could make the story come together and make sense was Sherlock Holmes😂😂😂 who then has to explain in the dialogue that he had faked his death. Guy Ritchie's version of the death of Sherlock Holmes and Professor James Moriarty is as visually stunning as the location but IMHO the lead up, set up and execution in the BBC's "The Reichenbach Fall" episode of the Cumberbatch-Freeman Sherlock series set would have been entirely satisfying to Sir Arthur.
Man you had to be in the theatre for that final fight. Everybody was roaring like it was a Marvel movie when Sherlock started to narrate the final fight, until Moriarty started speaking too... Guy Ritchie was a master at setting up amd subverting expectation in this movie. Removing the narration from the first movie for Sherlock's easy fights, adding it back in for fights where he needs full concentration (but making it more playful with the breakfast analogy), setting up that his thought fighting can actually be interrupted. So when he gets to the final fight, you can tell he's serious because he's narrating the same way he did in the first movie, and then you know it's dire because for the first time someone else is narrating too. But then he brings it back around to the fact the brain fights can be interrupted, and uses that to do a classic Columbo "one more thing" mystery moment, but for a fistfight. Doyle wrote the story and Moriarty as a way to kill Sherlock Holmes because he never expected that was the only writing people wanted from him, he had other novel ideas that were getting paid less attention to. So he respected him to have him die against his greatest foe, and one of the most iconic villains in literary/cultural history. The stories are written from Watson's perspective, and the final lines of the book were the final lines Watson wrote here. Public pressure made Doyle resurrect Sherlock a good chunk of time later, originally he outright beat Moriarty in the fistfight which occurred after their tumble. The sniper here was introduced after the resurrection, seeking revenge for Moriarty. Oh yeah and apparently Guy Rutchie brought on several chess consultants so the each act from Moriarty and Holmes corresponded with real chess moves, the plot resembling a game.
Oh, and Oak, to your point, there has been lots of discourse about Sherlock Holmes being autistic. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle likely didn’t intend it that way given the time that he wrote the books and how little we knew about autism at the time, but a lot of people believe that Sherlock would have been somewhere on the spectrum. Some interpretations have taken it to a different extreme of portraying him as a sociopath, which is nothing like the character in the books, but autism is pretty consistent across all iterations.
I'm biased to that opening scene. It was filmed in Strasbourg, France in front of the Cathedral. Its foundations are over a thousand years old. As far as I know this is the only box office movie filmed in Strasbourg. Waiting for Sherlock Holmes 3!
I have been wanting a third movie since this one came out, but at this point, I don't think we're getting one. They've been saying they're working on it for years, and honestly, the rumor is that Guy Ritchie isn't even involved at this point. If that's the case, just leave it at 2 movies. I love them both, and I can just keep watching those. I don't want a third just for the sake of saying they made a third installment. Side note: Answer, you just became my favorite for bringing up Psych. I adore that show. 😁
The Strasbourg cathedral at the start is actually so old, its first stone was put down more than a millennium ago. My dad got to be an extra during that explosion too, and yes, it was real
Every trick in guy richie’s play book is here. These are his two most financially successful films so it’s strange that everyone wants to make the third, yet we’re still waiting
Those of us who were huge fans of these movies have been wanting a third for so long, we've waited patiently as it got set back a lot. But I heard its finally underway. I am so glad you guys enjoyed this! These 2 movies hold my heart. I heard recently that Jude Law and RDJ are actually good friends, whether before or after these movies I dont know, but the chemistry is so good. As for Oak's question, I have seen many discussons on Sherlock being on the spectrum. I am one of those that fully thinks he is. Apart form all his intelligence stuff and observations, he also has other traits. He is sensitive to overstimulation at times. He hyperfixates on stuff to distract. He struggles with social issues and relationships. He is near codependent on Watson and loves him dearly. He has a general disregard for things that dont hold his interest. SO many more details but this just adds to the idea he is.
I love that you guys are honest about what you’ve seen, I know going into this it’s still going to be a fun ride. Keep up the good work, I’ll keep watching!☺️🤘
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did indeed end his book with Sherlock pulling Moriarty off the waterfall. However, he didn't reveal Sherlock's return until 2 years later. But he didn't return until 10 years after his believed death. And a third movie keeps getting delayed.
I was going to comment this, glad I checked to see if someone beat me to it. I think it's kind of funny Doyle did intend for Sherlock to actually die in "The Final Problem," but he got so much pressure from his publisher and fans (and he needed money) that he brought Sherlock back.
He was not written as a character that had autism because Autism wasn’t a known/named condition in Arthur Conan Doyle’s time, his character has been analysed by psychologists and the consensus is that he exhibits signs of ASD but there isn’t enough to go on to definitively say he is, he could just be presenting traits that are on a broad spectrum of eccentric genius or personality quirks and so labelling him as Autistic could be doing his character a disservice. Funnily enough, the tv series Sherlock, which I highly recommended you guys should watch and in my opinion is better than the Guy Ritchie Films, they make Sherlock’s character align more closely with Autism and conditions like Asperger’s Syndrome, which I know is no longer a PC term but that has always been the term I grew up with and I am not a fan of erasing history so as to not offend some easily offended person looking for something to be offended by because they haven’t got anything to actually complain about. Erasing history only dooms us to repeat it.
If you want to see a different kind of Sherlock Holmes film I recommend watching Without A Clue. Holmes is played by Michael Caine. Ben Kingsley is Watson.
That one quote makes me want to name my male dog Stanley when I get him. But it will probably be a big ass American Bulldog or Pitbull named Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt doesn’t like strangers 😂. Just a badass name lol. Theodore Roosevelt don’t fuck around. Can’t hold Theodore Roosevelt on a leash. 😂.
The music in the scene riding the mule Its a great and sweet homage to Ennio Morricone score in “Two mules for sister Sarah” with Clint Eastwood back in the day. Its the same tune. 🙌🙂
Please consider watching the Benedict Cumberbatch show Sherlock! It's a great modern day Sherlock, and only 12 episodes with one or two specials, so its not a huge commitment
I’m going out of town this weekend to a place where I won’t have any Internet service, so I downloaded this video and saving it for my off-the-grid weekend. I know y’all are gonna love it.
i love both of these films, they are so good. If you like sherlock stuff, i would suggest the bbc sherlock series and elementary with johnny lee miller playing holmes, 2 great shows.
That sort of cheeky music the plays when Sherlock rides on the donkey. That then has the choir female vocal part is the musical score for the Clint Eastwood western movie Two Mules for Sister Sarah
The castle is not real, but in the book the waterfall is where Sherlock Holmes beat Professor Moriarty. There's a plaque at the location that tourists love to visit that references the date from the story.
Strasbourg Cathedral was built in between 1176 and 1439. So it was already old in the 1800s. The knowledge of creating buildings like this is older than you think.
I love this movie, I probably quote it at least twice a month even now and I originally watched it in the cinema 😅 Horses are dangerous on both ends and crafty in the middle is probably one of my favourite movie lines ever 😅 Accompanied by Why would I want something with a mind of its own bobbing between my legs?, of course 😅😅😅
Yes I agree and with Martin Freeman as Doctor Watson it can really deliver. (Great duo in Hobbit as well in my opinion) It's set in modern (~2010 ish) times. 4 seasons (4x3) with episodes usually 1h30 long. Some of the stories have elements from the original stories which is just great.
@@marcusmcgill4423 yes! I liked Watson women, I liked american setting bc it was different from most, I liked this version of Sherlock, this very in face, rude, modern, but still with charm. All the cases where fun, interesting, and you feld the work they put into them, it wasen't simply Sherlock analazing something fast in head, still He did see more then most prople but it was also hard work, experience and research. And younseevit especially when he teach Watson. Hmm i'm iffy about ending but then again it is always hard to end good series....
I love the fact that Holmes and Moriarty just start playing that chess game in their head while homes talk about his money and Moriarty just keep playing to see where this is going since its already a Check Mate an he didnt knew it. Its just so good for me.
Jared Harris (Professor James Moriarty) is one of my favourite character actors, first noticed him in one of my favourite syfy shows Fringe. The fact that he is the great Richard Harris's son (you know him as the 1st Dumbledore) shouldn't surprise
In the books, Holmes considers his brother Mycroft to be even more intelligent and deductive than he is, except for the simple fact that Mycroft is unbelievably lazy and can't be bothered to put his genius to much good use. Both Sherlock and the British Government go to Mycroft when they have a problem they can't figure out. He is considered "the most indispensable man in the country" by the Crown, but even with his vast knowledge and powers of reasoning he doesn't care to do much with it. "...Mycroft has no ambition and no energy. He will not even go out of his way to verify his own solutions, and would rather be considered wrong than take the trouble to prove himself right. Again and again I have taken a problem to him, and have received an explanation which has afterwards proved to be the correct one. And yet he was absolutely incapable of working out the practical points.."
What an absolutely treat to get this follow up so soon! You guys have spoiled us with this! I love this sequel so much, because I felt like it really played on the emotions of Holmes and Watson's complicated relationship. It's subtle, but powerful how Holmes is highly motivated to stop Moriarty, not just for his own ego, or doing the right thing, but to protect Watson. Wastson being oblivious, to an extent, to how far Holmes is going to keep him safe, but then still, that moment on the train when he has to lose his best friend... They care so much, but I dont think they truly understand how much the other cares about them. And that scene with them on the boat, with Adler's handkerchief too. I know a lot of comments are mentioning the BBC Sherlock. It's not for everyone, (though I absolutely loved it), but I honestly believe you lot would really enjoy it if you havent seen it yet. The dry humor, the clever banter, the fun takes on classic characters. Please do consider reacting to it 🙏
My very first introduction to Sherlock Holmes was the complete works of Sherlock Holmes from Conan Doyle. It the very first novel series I ever read as a kid and it's officially my favorite classic book series of works. Sherlock Holmes is my favorite fictional detective character. I loved this movie series and it's portrayal, but like others have said, I enjoyed the Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson is definitely my favorite of all the modern interpretations of the characters. If you guys do take the time to react to the tv series, it would def be awesome!
One of the rare times in Hollywood when I'm really annoyed we haven't had a sequel. I love the Guy Ritchie style & acting of these Sherlock films. Every few years they mention they're working on it, getting a script, sorting acting schedules etc. But that's been the line for 10yrs now.
(Sherlock reveals himself while still in disguise as a woman, prompting a "what the hell" look out of Watson): I agree, it's not my best disguise. Me: Yeah, no kidding. There are men who can pass themselves off perfectly as women, you're not one of them. 😂🤣
Fantastic watchalong with this one and you three! Apparently Downey signed off and approved on the third film script and had a window between shooting Infinity Wars and Endgame, but reshoots closed off that window and it's been a wait ever since.
In the books Reichenbach Falls is where Sherlock in fact does die by falling into the waterfall with Moriarty those who read the books could see it coming but then the end of the movie subverted expectations in the best of ways =)
I'm glad you guys enjoyed this one! I agree on your general consensus, while the first one was great, I've got a soft spot for this one as well, and tend to lean towards it out of the two :)
They are thinking about doing the 3rd very seriously in the last few months (Or so I read). Rachel McAdams was notified that she will be in it, if it gets done.
It's always a pleasure watching you guys. Always makes my day. Have either of you watched the British Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch? It's absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend it!
I absolutely love this film more than the first. Simply because of Jared Harris' performance as Moriarty and his juxtaposition to Sherlock is so strong. It was also such a fun ride from place to place with the stakes rising even more. Solid flick for me!
Agreed Moriarty was always supposed to be the dark mirror of Holmes. The man Sherlock would have been had he not been a good person. And they played that brilliantly in this movie. Holmes is smug condescending and arrogant but he's loyal, playful and fun. While the professor cares for no one and nothing but himself.
I'm still waiting for part 3. They keep saying it's being made but nothing yet!! I'm re-watching the tv show Elementary that is yet another take on Sherlock with Jonny Lee Miller playing him and the fabulous Lucy Liu playing Watson. That part that Answer brought up about Sherlock seeing "everything" is also something they bring up in Elementary.
Jared Harris is a name in his own right...Dude was in Mad Men, Lincoln, Chernobyl, The Expanse, Foundation, The Crown, and on and on...Richard Harris is his father's name.

Moriarty lost his mental duel because he assumed Sherlock would fight to win. Sacrificing himself never crossed his mind!

I was going to comment this, glad I checked to see if someone beat me to it. I think it's kind of funny Doyle did intend for Sherlock to actually die in "The Final Problem," but he got so much pressure from his publisher and fans (and he needed money) that he brought Sherlock back.
I really like this one, Jared Harris is such a good actor
Woo, I've been looking forward to this! Just finished binging your LotR reactions.
When you all mentioned hidden rooms you reminded me of a movie I haven't thought of in years called Panic Room.
That forest scene is so good, till this day one of my favorite action scenes
RDJ is such a terrific actor! He can play in any kind of role!!
For that slow-motion wood scene, they had the RUclips channel The SlowMo Guys on set to help with those shots. I hope we eventually get a 3rd movie.
Ooo yes! Great suggestion 😁
I think Guy Richie is an American Quentin Tarantino in his style of filming 😊
I’m going out of town this weekend to a place where I won’t have any Internet service, so I downloaded this video and saving it for my off-the-grid weekend. I know y’all are gonna love it.
I LOVE these movies! I have also reacted to them. Was hoping for a third one but who knows at this point if/when will it ever happen 🤔
The ending elevated this, would have loved to have seen a 3rd one.
It’s being made
End of 2025! Not gonna read into it because I like going into the theatre blind, but both RDJ and Jude Law are returning
i love both of these films, they are so good.
I love this movie, I probably quote it at least twice a month even now and I originally watched it in the cinema 😅 Horses are dangerous on both ends and crafty in the middle is probably one of my favourite movie lines ever 😅 Accompanied by Why would I want something with a mind of its own bobbing between my legs?, of course 😅😅😅
please watch the first bbc sherlock episode!! its like 1h 30 mins and perfect. its where benedict cumberbatch got his name
My favorite Sherlock Holmes series are
1. This movies
2. Elementary
3. Sherlock Holmes (BBC TV show)
People sleep on Elementary. Loved it.
Mason Quinn's "That's how smart guys fight" at 17:55 had me cracking up. My favorite comment from this reaction.
I love that you watch things with subtitles!! I love subtitles- and honestly the closed captioning that RUclips generates is… not great.
I've been to Reichenbach Falls on a motorbike tour..that's not it.
15:20 classic example of why having the Bachelor party the night before the wedding is a bad idea 😂😂😂
Jared Harris (Professor James Moriarty) is one of my favourite character actors, first noticed him in one of my favourite syfy shows Fringe. The fact that he is the great Richard Harris's son (you know him as the 1st Dumbledore) shouldn't surprise
The forest chase is still my favorite part of the movie, such a cool scene!
I didn't know there was a sequel
Ya'll need to watch the BBC Sherlock series with our very own Dr Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch in a modern retelling of Sherlock Holmes.
One day you guys need to watch this awesome movie that came out in the 80s, called Young Sherlock Holmes.😊👌
Yes! Sequel time! Thanks!
(watch Epic the Musical...)
This movie is one of my FAVOURITES! That chess game and fight at the end 🤯
19:45 the scene where they’re on the train and the gun backfires because Holmes sabotaged it was a callback to the first movie when the bad guy did it
I love the acting by the French resistance guy in the cellar. Him eating and drinking and talking is doing so much. He’s walking the line.
Ah, I love Moriarty in this film, mostly due to the acting of the great Jared Harris!
Yer legend Richard harris son
Seeing that Don Giovanni scene makes me want you guys to watch Amadeus. That song in particular is featured in that movie... 👊😎
Thanks for the upload boys appreciate it!!
We need sherlock holmes 3!!!
Johnny depp and rdj in a movie together would be amazing
Omg that’s crazy in a good way I’d love that how fantastic would that be
Thats Arthur Shelby in the beginning guys !!!
After this i HIGHLY recommend the BBC Sherlock show!
That’s rubbish
This is a wild sponsor 😂 congrats guys thats freaking cool
In the books Reichenbach Falls is where Sherlock in fact does die by falling into the waterfall with Moriarty those who read the books could see it coming but then the end of the movie subverted expectations in the best of ways =)
I'm glad you guys enjoyed this one! I agree on your general consensus, while the first one was great, I've got a soft spot for this one as well, and tend to lean towards it out of the two :)
robert played holmes to a perfection
And Moriarty is also Legasov in Chernobyl...you guy need to do Justified, maybe not all 6 seasons but the first anyway, it is is freaking good
They are thinking about doing the 3rd very seriously in the last few months (Or so I read). Rachel McAdams was notified that she will be in it, if it gets done.
It's always a pleasure watching you guys. Always makes my day.
Have either of you watched the British Sherlock series with Benedict Cumberbatch? It's absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend it!
AMAZING reaction ladsss
BBC Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman needs to be done!!!
you wouldnt want to miss it
I absolutely love this film more than the first.
Fun Fact: The actor playing Moriarty is the real life son of the first Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies.
Jared Harris is a name in his own right...Dude was in Mad Men, Lincoln, Chernobyl, The Expanse, Foundation, The Crown, and on and on...Richard Harris is his father's name.
Oh yeah, now that you mention it, he looks like Richard Harris. Cool, thanks for that little knowledge
