That was super powerful for me too. It's what I say to myself before every performance and it just reminds me that the story and my honesty is the most important thing to stay connected to.
Singing is like acting. A song is a way to express a story, like a play or a movie. It's not just HOW you render the lyrics, it's your understanding of what the author wanted to say and your way to adapt it to you. You could be the best vocalist ever, and be mediocre on stage. That's why some artists will never be stars even if they have a better voice than the next singer. Stage presence is the key. A song is an emotion delivered through music and lyrics. If you can't show in your attitude what the song is all about, then you'll just SING a song, not INTERPRET it.
I am a soprano vocalist, and I just discovered your videos. I really needed to watch this, and I truly appreciate it. I understand every word you're saying, but my hope is that I can actually apply these tips. I am the most self-critical, type A, perfectionist out there. On the other side of the coin, though, I feel music more deeply and am more passionate about music than anyone I know. The problem is, my perfectionism and self-critical nature tends to overcome my passion when I am performing. There have been a handful of great performances I've had when I can honestly say that I've been "in the moment". I'm not sure how I did it. Most of the time, I'm busy worrying about every aspect of the piece... every note... every breath.... how I'll sound... how I'll be perceived... if I'll mess up and fail. All I want to do is sing, but... the fear I have of not being perfect causes me to have so much anxiety leading up to any performance. It's awful. Surprisingly, despite all of my anxiety, I've never choked or crashed and burned in a performance. I usually do really well... kind of a "fake it until you make it" thing. I want to free myself of this. Thanks for your videos.
+Kelly We can easily get caught in that "perfection paralysis" and feel that when we get everything exactly the way we want it, then we will express it. And it's totally ok to have those kinds of standards for yourself. But be open to riding that emotional wave that happens when we just connect with what we are saying, and allow that to move us. All the preparation work is done when we take the stage, and you can trust that whatever happens...it's ok. You can trust yourself. That tiny step into surrender will move mountains! And people will be able to truly be there with you. It's hard to make the choice to no longer spend all our performance energy worrying about all the "how's" How do I sound?" "How are people perceiving me?" "How will I recover if I mess up?" etc. All of those thoughts rob you of your beautiful presence...So the next time you take the stage, bring all your energy into the present and notice how all the how's fade away. I can't wait to hear you sing! Lots of love to you!
Excellent advice! I need to stop comparing myself to other singers and listen to this video a few more times, so these words get locked in. Thank you Madeleine.
So refreshing to hear this perspective...expresses some things I could not put into words for many years...this might actually be the best singing instruction video on youtube.
wow i never comment on videos but this was so deep and moving, i really heard you. and i love that you didn't give physical tips it was just about how being centered, full of raw emotion, vulnerable and just i could go on and on, but yeah just thank you so much!!!
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ONE!!!!! I think this will be a game changer for overthinky McGee! I think this was the affirmation that my Emotion and Energy is more important than making sure my technique is Perfect.
Hi Madeleine, I'm also a singer and singing coach in Argentina and it pleases me big time to be at the exact same page as you are on how to feel the energy and connect with songs. I couldn't agree more with you and every thing you say is exactly the same concept I pass on to my students. It's always nice to encounter people who work and think the same way as you. I'll be checking your lessons more often! Thank you for transmiting and sharing with the world!! Mery Zeta
This is true! I have been singing for a very long time and feeling the music and putting emotion into your song completely brings it too another level!
Im so grateful that there is someone like you on youtube.. a human being who can teach and convey a beautiful message in such an effective way. Thank you so much Madeleine
I love these videos and "the audience really needs to believe that you can do anything the way that you feel from the inside and out of your heart to your compassion for the love for music " that calls being so empowered
I love your videos! I sing at my church and struggled with my confidence and I am really excited to see what my voice can do once I connect to myself more! Thank you so much!
I actually followed the tips and Madeleine help me so much not only I made to the finals but I got highest score and people approached me and appreciated my song .. I sing “ my way “ .. Madeleine your are awesome :) I’ll update u this grand finale :)
one of my favourite things about singers is that they're usually great at public speaking, too! y'all have confidence in your speech and tone, and i love it.
You know what you're talking about and you express yourself with such clarity and charisma. I have a total talent crush haha. Your lessons are fantastic and I can't wait to put them into practice.
So much wisodom in these words, just what I needed today. Thank you. And I do feel you as a singer even when you just tell us what it means to express music through singing.
You are the best voice teacher I’ve ever had. Thank you for your honesty. Wish I had not wasted my money on the lousy voice lessons I’ve had. You are Amazing!
Wow ! Powerful words ! Best Tips on the web about singing. It's about connecting with yourself and with others trough energy.... really the essential truth about how to sing to be unforgettable ! Now I see 'singing' in a different way.... a powerful way ! Thanks for sharing !
I love to sing songs that touch me, tell me a story, inspire me or that I just flat out love for no reason that I can fathom. Those are the songs where I can forget myself (almost) and just let it go and flow out of me. Those are the songs that touch others the most. Thank you so much for your instructions on youtube and your website. You are such an adorable sweet thing and yet you have such an amazing strong presence and passion for what you do that fires up and inspires others. Thank you.
I’m so glad I found you also looks like you have similar spiritual beliefs to me what you are saying brings my back to why I want/wanted to start singing I felt alive and this sort of weird energy and I didn’t want people to hear me or the attention of others I just wanted to sing and just hear myself and feel myself idk if that’s creepy sry.
This is the secret of a real artist: to be authentic. All of us are authentic, and only a bundle of stupid thoughts separate us from who we really are.... What you are talking about here is Meditation. I love you Madeleine.
Man I was at a plateau and this video just brought me back. I was so focused on my sound and so frustrated and this always brings me back to why I sing. Thank you so much.
Just having performed for the first time with a band, this is just what I needed to hear! The singers that i love the most are the most connected to the song and in the moment.
Thank you so much for this, it really helped because I was so focused on how I sounded and it made singing tedious and stressful for me. I’m now trying really hard to be more connected to the music and I’m starting to love singing again, like I used to:)
I really love your advice in these videos. I am a worship singer and struggle with confidence to be free and let go on stage. My insecurities get to me. Will they like me? If I let go will I look like a fool? Will it be to much or not enough? My greatest wish is to be free to be me. Your videos have given me a starting point. Thank you!
I love this. I have confidence issue i hope you will be able to enlighten me how to believe myself and my vocal capabilities on stage. N stop being over critical
Totally awesome young lady. You've taught an old man a new "trick". I have cut off the flow at times trying to sing like I think people wanna hear it. I write songs and play the guitar. But I really need to concentrate on my singing. Your advise is much appreciated. Thank-you. 🎸
Oh my gosh, Madeleine, that was beyond great! You are a great coach in many aspects and it's so kind of you to share your wonderful gifts and skills with the Universe. I'm so glad I found your channel! (ha! solar plexus.. "Ram")
I have just discovered your channel and I am so glad I. I have sang for years and although I get many compliments after a performance I have only ever come 1st in a singing competition once, every other time I don't make it passed the auditions. Watching this video makes me wonder if I am cold when I sing, I mean I really feel it whilst I am performing but perhaps that doesn't translate in my voice.
You have an amazing channel and a lot of information that makes sense to a total casual singer like me. Hope I would become a good professional singer by following your techniques and advise 😊
Welcome to my musical family!!! If you have professional goals, keep exploring your awesome voice! You'll be amazed at the amazing places your voice can take you! Good luck!
this is exactlyyyy what i aim for. every single time i do perform. it is a hard place to %1000 get. But once you do.. yeah... you're like.. not quit alive anymore. it's like you go into some black hole somewhere else.
I've been binge watching your videos, because I have such an important gig coming up this sunday that might bring me into TV! And your videos are helping me so much! After I "destroyed" my voice in 2013 I didn't sing for such a long time until a few months back and kept on pushing and straining. After watching a ton of your videos throughout the past few days I feel like I've stopped doing this, because I am no longer in pain when I sing and I sound better! Okay this turned into a quick speech, but I'm really thankful for your videos! I was scared to go to the audition. I won't lie and say I'm not nervous anymore, but your tips give me more confidence
Wow. I really do appreciate your videos, they inspire me to always try my hardest and be confident and passionate in what I’m doing without being overly critical on myself when I’m singing. I love you girl! Your amazing! Hugs from New Zealand xx
i appreciate what you are saying. but when u said to let go of how you want to sound. that really got to me. to be honest i still want to perfect my own sound just sounding however sounds really bad.

Thank you so much Atigre! ( I try to keep the babble to a minimum....But it's really hard!!) ; )
For real I love her videos so......much

Madeleine Harvey what does it mean though?
My name is laci
"The second its no longer honest, Im no longer interested." YES. If only we all lived by that motto!!!
It's so hard....but I do so try!

@Kelly- what would Maria Callas do? To me she was so expressive her “ flaws” never mattered.
Excellent advice! I need to stop comparing myself to other singers and listen to this video a few more times, so these words get locked in. Thank you Madeleine.
So refreshing to hear this perspective...expresses some things I could not put into words for many years...this might actually be the best singing instruction video on youtube.

So much wisodom in these words, just what I needed today. Thank you. And I do feel you as a singer even when you just tell us what it means to express music through singing.
Youre kind of a hero, especially in regards to the "keeping it REAL" part!! So true!! That is TOPS!!! You nailed it. Thanks again!

AWESOME!!!!!!! ONE OF THE BEST MOST IMPORTANT VIDEOS!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! WILL LISTEN TO THIS GREAT FOCALIZING MESSAGE REGULARLY!!! :) Comment: I have seen Linda Eder several times in concert. She has an amazing "Perfect" voice, with perfect clarity, roundness, she can hold notes longer than anyone. Vocally perfect...BUT there is something missing....as a singer, I am in awe of her ability and I would see her again, but it leaves me kinda of flat....
This is great singing advice! Thanks Madeleine!

im 12 and my parents like for me to sing in front of them I always get scared what do I do?
I am a soprano vocalist. Been many many yrs since i sang and now that i wanna pick it up, it's like a lot has changed. I cant hit the high notes i usually hit effortlessly. i struggle with keeping a tone, i have horrible breathing control which i think is my biggest issue and most likely the reason why i cant hit high notes so easily. Its like my voice is "out of shape"
I also get super nervous when infront of an audience. My voice starts to shake and i even forget the lyrics. Its like i cant just breathe and relax. My heart races like crazy.... i mean all these things didnt happen to me before and im like omg what is wrong with me! I know i can do it but i have been over powered by some kind of fear. Maybe the fear of what people will say or think if i dont sound good. Cuz when u r up there, all eyes and ears are on u. They wanna see what you can do and in my efford to impress i dont do as well as i wish. So i been on youtube looking for videos and tips that could help me improve and overcome all these obstacles so that my full potencial can be released. I found ur channel and i was very impressed at how helpful all ur videos and tips are. Its been helping me alot lately and i just wanted you to know that i am so grateful and blessed to have found youuuu!! Greetings from Aruba.😉
