And that you will be using some of what we talk about to change the world. So if you like this video, be sure to give it a thumbs up and click the subscribe button below for more singing tips and if you would like to take lessons with me, I would love to hear from you! So visit my website at MadeleineHarvey.com to get started.
    So what is the Ultimate secret to becoming an amazing singer? Well, it all boils down to this one essential thing…energy. The music business is a business of people. And what people want when they listen to, or go to see live music is the feeling that they are making a connection in a deep, real, meaningful way. They don’t want to just be sung at, they want to be moved, uplifted, excited, and alive. I know I have extremely high expectations with what I want my musical experience to be. And that is nothing short of spiritual. No matter what genre I am listening to, I want to be transported to a whole new level of existence! I will be so forgiving of a technical mistake, a missed note, a break here and there. But when a singer disconnects from the music by becoming overly critical, or attempting to over sing due to the need to impress. That’s it. I’m done. If it aint true…I’m through. Simple as that.
    I think that as a society, we have become a little too obsessed with sound. We lust after a quality of sound that may not necessarily be authentic, or shaped by our emotions…but hey it sounds just like Christina Aguilera! Isn’t that good enough? Not even close. You could have an amazing sound, but it don’t mean nothing if you don’t infuse that sound with every single bit of who you are.
    Singing in this way is what vulnerability and courage is all about. Making the choice to be present and alive in every moment. In order to get to this point, you must let go of the idea that your voice “should” sound a certain way. Surrender to the music. Allow your voice to reveal itself to you. Be a professional feeler!
    Here are three ways that you can tune into your energy while you sing
    1. Sing with Feeling - Practice feeling your song, by placing your hands on your solar plexus and just being there with the music. Listen to the instruments. Let all thought go…and really have the experience. Don’t mentalize what you think you are trying to say, don’t criticize your sound, just feel it. The best way to connect emotionally with the audience is to stay connected to yourself. Move us by being moved yourself. Don’t SHOW us an experience, just have one. We will be sharing that experience together. When you learn to operate from this kind of stillness, you will KNOW you did well. You will feel the authenticity of the expression, and you will no longer NEED to be validated.
    2. Sing to Yourself - Practice in front of a mirror. But don’t just pay attention to your voice, watch your eyes also. After all the eyes are the window to the soul. And just like your voice, your eyes should communicate the subtle impulses of thought and emotion. It’s not acting…it’s not trying to show anything…just be willing to actually have the experience with the music.
    3. Sing with Emotion - Allow your voice to be fragile. By that I mean, completely sensitive to what you are feeling. Entirely shaped by your experience. When you tell someone “I love you” do you notice your voice soften, or the quality change. You don’t say it like a robot on a pitch. So don’t sing it that way. Your shifting feelings will determine your approach to your voice. So just be honest. I’ve never trusted a perfect voice. I always thought it was like a musical mask. I LOVE it when someone’s voice is affected by the emotion that they are experiencing. Insta tears for me!

    "The audience wants to believe you." That's really powerful.

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice
      @MadeleineHarveyVoice  7 лет назад +53

      That was super powerful for me too. It's what I say to myself before every performance and it just reminds me that the story and my honesty is the most important thing to stay connected to.

    • @Slydertek
      @Slydertek 6 лет назад +6

      Singing is like acting. A song is a way to express a story, like a play or a movie. It's not just HOW you render the lyrics, it's your understanding of what the author wanted to say and your way to adapt it to you. You could be the best vocalist ever, and be mediocre on stage. That's why some artists will never be stars even if they have a better voice than the next singer. Stage presence is the key. A song is an emotion delivered through music and lyrics. If you can't show in your attitude what the song is all about, then you'll just SING a song, not INTERPRET it.

    I am a soprano vocalist, and I just discovered your videos. I really needed to watch this, and I truly appreciate it. I understand every word you're saying, but my hope is that I can actually apply these tips. I am the most self-critical, type A, perfectionist out there. On the other side of the coin, though, I feel music more deeply and am more passionate about music than anyone I know. The problem is, my perfectionism and self-critical nature tends to overcome my passion when I am performing. There have been a handful of great performances I've had when I can honestly say that I've been "in the moment". I'm not sure how I did it. Most of the time, I'm busy worrying about every aspect of the piece... every note... every breath.... how I'll sound... how I'll be perceived... if I'll mess up and fail. All I want to do is sing, but... the fear I have of not being perfect causes me to have so much anxiety leading up to any performance. It's awful. Surprisingly, despite all of my anxiety, I've never choked or crashed and burned in a performance. I usually do really well... kind of a "fake it until you make it" thing. I want to free myself of this. Thanks for your videos.

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice
      @MadeleineHarveyVoice  8 лет назад +30

      +Kelly We can easily get caught in that "perfection paralysis" and feel that when we get everything exactly the way we want it, then we will express it. And it's totally ok to have those kinds of standards for yourself. But be open to riding that emotional wave that happens when we just connect with what we are saying, and allow that to move us. All the preparation work is done when we take the stage, and you can trust that whatever happens...it's ok. You can trust yourself. That tiny step into surrender will move mountains! And people will be able to truly be there with you. It's hard to make the choice to no longer spend all our performance energy worrying about all the "how's" How do I sound?" "How are people perceiving me?" "How will I recover if I mess up?" etc. All of those thoughts rob you of your beautiful presence...So the next time you take the stage, bring all your energy into the present and notice how all the how's fade away. I can't wait to hear you sing! Lots of love to you!

    Sooo after watching your videos, a phenomenon I have experienced now makes sence. I normally freak out at auditions, am so in my head, out of body experience ect. I specifically remember the moment I was "in the moment" feeling the soulful connection rather than technicality. I got weird tingles down the side of my face and got goosebumps. Lol I have myself goosebumps. I always was like, WTF was that. Now it makes sence.

    I've been binge watching your videos, because I have such an important gig coming up this sunday that might bring me into TV! And your videos are helping me so much!
    After I "destroyed" my voice in 2013 I didn't sing for such a long time until a few months back and kept on pushing and straining. After watching a ton of your videos throughout the past few days I feel like I've stopped doing this, because I am no longer in pain when I sing and I sound better!
    Okay this turned into a quick speech, but I'm really thankful for your videos! I was scared to go to the audition. I won't lie and say I'm not nervous anymore, but your tips give me more confidence

    I’m so glad I found you also looks like you have similar spiritual beliefs to me what you are saying brings my back to why I want/wanted to start singing I felt alive and this sort of weird energy and I didn’t want people to hear me or the attention of others I just wanted to sing and just hear myself and feel myself idk if that’s creepy sry.

    couldn't agree more.
    Everything is so processed. DJs / EDM music.
    it has spoiled our ears. And we are often let down in real life.
    But the only thing that matters is the escape and OWNING iT

    Totally awesome young lady. You've taught an old man a new "trick". I have cut off the flow at times trying to sing like I think people wanna hear it. I write songs and play the guitar. But I really need to concentrate on my singing. Your advise is much appreciated. Thank-you. 🎸
