This was a welcome, refreshing video format from a big game's news outlet. Had the Gamespot logo not been anywhere I would have assumed this was a well edited and directed video from an up and coming RUclipsr. Well done.
This was a really well made video! From the writing to the direction and editing, it had such a warm, welcoming and cozy feel to it. Loved this video and I'm absolutely going to check out more of Kurt's work
That's so awesome! Thanks for that, Reezlebob. Knowing you took the time to give it a watch, comment, and even feel cozy and welcomed is more than I could have asked for. Thanks!
@@KurtIndovina sweet. Thanks for the heads up. By the way, any chance that you have more videos about retro gaming on CRTs in the pipeline? I feel like that is a good enough topic to get its on video at some point.
Physical for life. I’m a collector so need my games as physical copies. Being able to lend my games , borrow , resell is a must. Relying on one digital store means you’re the mercy of their prices and usually physicals are cheaper even without being pre owned.
@@craigl458 PC really has the best sales overall as games reached $2 compared to $15+ on consoles but I guess I have to pay the price with my digital Xbox lol
get a PC kids. you can play anything on it. even ps exclusives are coming to it. it's backward compatible to dawn of PCs. don't forget you can pirate an old game if in case it's missing some files. buy the latest version to pay them. let me not start about mods. some games just become completely different from og after mods
My 2 cents, here in Brazil post-2015 is kinda expensive/difficult to buy physical games, PS4/PS5 not so much but xbox/Nintendo games are a pain to get, going digital was the easiest and, sometimes, cheapest way to buy games here. Today, as a Series S owner who use it everyday, I prefer to buy a 8GB external HDD and use it as a '8000 games-in-one cartridge', than buy a physical game and having Its case sitting on my shelf collecting dust. To give an example, Metroid Dread was released here on the Switch digital store for R$ 300, something like 54 dollars. The physical edition was not officialy released here, so if I want to buy it I need use stores which imports them. And they are selling it for R$ 450, something like 80 dollars.
Yeah, I'm brazillian also and in Brazil I go full digital just because the pricing is impossible. However, I lived in France for 2 years recently and there I got almost full physical (with the exception of ACNH because it launched during the lockdown), physical copies were overall cheaper there (thank you, Amazon). At the end of the day, for the Switch I 100% prefeer physical, I can resell it if I need to and I love to have the cartridges (and the games don't ocupy space in the memory), but for my Series X, unless there is emotional attachment to the series, I prefer digital, with gamepass almost everything I play is digital so every time I have to get up to change games is kinda of a chore.
I'm Brazilian as well and I agree with you. Actually I've gone all digital since the Xbox 360. Last gen I got a PS4 and I own only three physical games. Now I have a Series S, so I won't buy any physical games for obvious reasons.
Tbh i think it’s overrated. Ps5 digital is only 100$ more and has more storage and way more power. This is from a pc gamer who bought one for dont exclusives.
@@tylermiavlogs5441 yea but Gamepass blows PlayStation out the water. It’s about the games, and Sony just isn’t like how they were back on the PS4. Too pretentious with the 70 dollar up charge
It's always been hard to understand the choice between a Digital Only console and a console that does both. They're the same, except one has more options whether you use them or not.
Not really, game installs are a bit faster with a disc, but you still have to download a chunk of the game and patches. You'll never buy a physical game on PS or Xbox that doesn't require internet and patches.
@@TheHomieShawn I hear the argument, but as someone gaming exclusively digitally because of the price of physical games where I live, I don't want to take the extra time and care needed to sell/trade my games.
@@TcherryTHOREST I see your point. I live in the US and collect games, but before I started collecting, I would beat a game the few days after I got it, usually a new release. Then, I would take it to GameStop, they usually gave me 30 bucks or around that for new releases and I’d just put it towards something else, saved a lot of money doing that even though I could’ve saved more selling on eBay or Facebook Marketplace.
I was originally going to buy the digital ps5 but was only able to get my hands on a regular ps5 & I'm glad I did I've saved a lot of money buying pre-owned games
Short term spend for a long term pay off. Not really funny. Pretty smart considering these ps5 games stay between £50-£80 digitally but can drop to under £30 on sale or pre-owned.
@@fightnight14 By spending less, which is beneficial in the long term. On the digital PS5 you have to pay full price for games or wait for a sale whenever that happens.
I never leave comments on videos, but I do feel like this was excellent games journalism, so just wanted to leave that sentiment here. It’s so heartening to listen to a conversation about gaming that doesn’t have to do with a company doing something wrong or a review but actually about the thing itself. Bravo!
Same lol. I know a lot of people disagree, but I thoroughly enjoy the library of games that gamepass offers and it’s really exciting to know that brand new Xbox games will be added day one. There’s tons of games I missed out on that I’m heavily enjoying, also that emulation :0 I’ll have to dust off my ps5 for that new horizon game though.. can’t miss that!
I low key regret going all digital, so many games I could grab cheap on disc but I'm at the mercy of PlayStation store prices. Be cool if MS, Sony/All publishers competed with retail and pre-owned prices more. Not a massive deal because most of the gaming market nowadays bores tf outta me and I dont game as much, but still miss being able to grab a game on the cheap.
The PS store has sales all the time. I haven’t paid full price for a game in the entirety of the time I’ve had my PS4. Patience is the name of the game
@@hobojoe9717 yeah if you don't care about getting games on day 1, you can find most games on sale digitally. PS Store is even have a pretty good Black Friday sale rn.
I have one year with the xbox series S (with game pass of course) and I loove it. I am 40 years old and I have played my whole life (since Atari). I've had nintendos, xboxs and playstations and this last year has been my best year as a gamer. If you are thinking of buying a series S (or an X) you will not regret it. Its really great.
I love having the OPTION to go digital as it allows me to play some games that I would not have access to otherwise (like some dreamcast and neo geo games currently available on steam) BUT.... I don't like the idea of media distribution in general going digital ONLY... that just doesn't feel right.. I'm actually chasing down my favorite movies on Blu-ray or even dvd for that very reason.
This generation, it's worth spending that little extra for the physical editions. Even if you plan on buying majority digital games. Those occasional physical-only games, or games that are cheaper physical because a shop is trying to clear stock or you're buying used, ect. They justify the extra price, especially on the PS5 where the price difference between the digital and disc systems is tiny.
You think you're going to get enough sale discounts for physical disc to justify spending a 100 dollars more? What about the digital store which usually has discounts on older games all the time as well as publisher discounts(on Xbox, idk about PS) and Christmas discounts and bundle discounts, included in game credit offers, and discounts for trying the game in a certain period and other discounts through the year... I'm just saying that the specific reason you provided isn't good enough to justify spending 100 more since there many more discount opportunities in the digital store Imo.
@@lilmario0 it’s just 100 dollars so seems like a good bet over the 7+ years you’ll own the console 🤷♂️ especially considering borrowing physical games from family/friends
@@jmoney1139 Im speaking specifically about spending an extra 100 to take advantage of physical game sales like the OP mentioned. I agree with you that borrowing games is a great reason to buy the PS5 with a disc tray.
@@lilmario0 You're gonna spend that $100 in a few months buying digital games vs buying physical. With digital you pay for the convenience. There's plenty of games right now that are $20-30 cheaper than buying digital right now with the holidays sales.
I went all digital last year as well with the PS5 and Series X. It helped me go digital for retro as well. Everdrives and optical drive emulators make the games I never had now playable (and much more affordable), and the retrotink 5x scaler makes them playable on an HDTV. I sold a bulk of my game collection, keeping the games I care about, and the consolidation never felt so good.
Extremely well made video, this guy always nails the vibe. Make a weekly series or something, I would be up listening for random topics of gaming like this, and I am sure others also feel the same way. About the digital vs physical topic, honestly I am totally on the digital side. I have a gaming laptop which does not have a disc drive, and it never really bothers me. Plus I got gamepass for like, 1 euro, and then spent points to extend it till 6 months. Its working like a charm. So no, I never bother about the physical copies.
What you said in the end is why I kept my SEGA genesis, n64, ps2 with ps1 backcompat and Wii with component cables for gamecube. I’m pretty digital for the future, I only have one switch game physical and the rest I have on a big sd card. I will probably get the Xbox series s or ps5 digital. I recognize the problems with digital but when many games are essentially shipping physically as 100 mb launchers or having only half the game on the disc/cartridge, it’s just whatever to me at that point and like just clicking a new game from a menu vs getting up and popping it out to not even be read off the disc or cartridge anyway. Plus I’m someone who when a console isn’t supported anymore, and it isn’t too much trouble, I find a way to mod or jailbreak it for the main reason of being able to preserve and back up games that may be hard to find or save data that I have put way too much time into. But for the ps2/gc generation and backwards, idk, there’s just something about the game cases, the controllers, having a memory card, the variety, finding a cheap steal or a hidden gem or a game that’s so bad it’s actually good. Idk a lot of older games took risks, and I appreciate that. To this day, there really isn’t a game that feels like the jak and daxter trilogy, or the first sly cooper, prince of Persia sands of time, splashdown rides gone wild, the first warioware, the first few ddrs on ps2, the gamecube Mario parties (the best ones I don’t care what you think n64 purists, I started there too), the laughably yet endearing licensed games of the early 00s. Obviously I have a soft spot for the ps2/gc library but that was such a cool time in gaming that’s just hard to describe. The 3ds (2ds) is kind of my new console to fall in love with and I think part of the reason is the games on there really have a feel that is similar to that generation, there’s just a warm fuzzy feeling I get when I see those slightly blurry pixels.
I’m a physical disk person. Being able to resell, borrow, feel, display and glance on the artwork of the games are amazing. Although it can be messy sometimes when not on a shelf, it does make it more unique in some way. Not only that, you can also get physical games way more cheaper than digital games. While, if you buy digital games, you can lend to a friend, can’t display them, can’t resell them ect. Also, I’m pretty sure, if you lose your psn/Xbox acount, then you’ll lose all your games. So that’s why I like buying physical games instead.
Just got my 5yr son his own Xbox series S and four 3month game pass cards for $24.99 each vs the normal $44.99 each so that now just $100 for an entire year and that’s less than buying two games individually So next time we need to buy more, it will be Black Friday sales time again
Digital is more expensive and you don't have the options you do with physical like selling the game or lending the game to friends. When you hear the media saying digital has become more popular that's just a narrative they use so they can make more money and make you feel like you are behind in the world. Physical will always remain the best option
I'm usually a physical collector, however due to poor spending habits (this is on me) I used to end up getting games just to store on the shelf and would never get around to playing them. Or I'd see something on sale digitally for very cheap, but then want them physically on the shelf, so i'd buy the same games multiple times. For me, going all digital is a way to discourage me from buying games just to fill a shelf, and they will usually be always available to me to download, as I've traded in some games before, only to buy them back when I'm better off. I respect people who have self control and can collect comfortably, but my impulsiveness ends up being the thing that cripples me. I have made an exception for the Switch, which is bizarre as that would probably be best as an all digital due to portability, however I enjoy the fluid case design as nearly all switch game cases follow the same formula. I'm just weird, but if anyone else is like this please let me know so I don't feel alone :')
I somehow agree with you. When I love some music from a movie or Spotify I don't hesitate to get its physical copy as a form of appreciation, and I like that you basically said " that's just the way I like it" I've got a friend who's chosen to go all digital but everytime he tells me about his decisions I feel Like he feels superior and tries to convince me that's that's THE way to go, and I as a person who just enjoys stacks of games by my tv I just say ok, I prefer my stuff
It all comes down to what YOU find value in. That’s it. I couldn’t care less about how someone else chooses to collect and play games. But I still love hearing different perspectives. In the end, you do you. And he’ll yeah to getting that sweet music we love physically, and games too! Especially the old ones like Tekken 3 and D2.
I bought my Series S second hand, for £120 and I mainly bought it to be an emulation beast and I haven't been disappointed. Playing the new games is the cherry on top, but playing new games isnt really interesting for me personally.
I wish I had gone digital the last couple of generations. I'd almost rebuy an old game digitally at this point rather than venture through stored games in the garage to find the one I want. Seeing all my old, early Xbox Live Arcade games populate makes me wonder how cool it would be to have my whole collection so easily accessible.
I buy all my games digitally, but have a disk PS5 so that people can then buy me games as gifts. But then when the same game goes on sale digitally for a similar amount to how much I can sell the physical game, I buy it and sell the physical version. Best of both worlds.
i was always the kid who went into the 2nd hand game store so theres something about disks which make me feel somewhat nostalgic so sometimes i treat myself to a physical game
I never leave comments but wow this video was great! Would love to see more content like this from Gamespot. The editing/direction/writing/delivery was so good, like a little documentary. Enjoyed it so much, keep it up!
I really dig your videos Kurt, they’re always really well put together and interesting. I’ve been interested in getting a CRT tv to play my Dreamcast through for awhile and you’ve inspired me to do it! I love the comparison between playing vinyl records and playing older games on PS1 and Dreamcast.
Ah Robin, that means a lot to me. Thanks for showing up and enjoying it. As for CRTs, it can tea be a rabbit hole, but I kind of deliberately got a regular ol vcr combo opposed to the higher end Sony ones a lot of retro enthusiasts go for. I just wanted to play it as close as to how I would have experienced it back then.
It happens pretty often that I’m looking to buy a game that released within a year and the physical is always cheaper. You save 100 bucks upfront for the digital console but may end up spending more in building your game library
I’ve been all digital on steam since 2014 (with the exception of a few switch games) and I don’t regret it at all. Physical media is a nuisance. I don’t need physical space to store my games, or worry about damage. Plus, my games are available on any computer instantly. Download times and storage are not an issue, I have fast internet and can easily add more hard drives to my computer. I am glad that digital games are the future.
This is an excellent video. You (Kurt) addressed so many different facets of going all digital... or not to in some cases... That inevitably the all digital future is here whether we like it or not. The next step is cloud gaming... Again, whether gamers like it or not. I am part of Gen X, and we literally grew up along side the video game industry as it bloomed into the multibillion dollar industry of today. A big part of me is concerned with game preservation (physical or digital presentation) because the industry is only less than 40something years old at this point even if it seems longer. Digital is convenient, but we need people who are focused on game preservation to make sure we are preserving our digital past as we move to an all-digital future.
Your time and attention means so much. Glad you watched it and enjoyed it. And I really appreciate your viewpoint, especially as someone who’s growing with the industry in this way. We’re in a real weird awkward growing phase for the inevitable digital future, while grappling with legacy and preservation. I want to believe it’ll eventually balance out, or, at least, plant good foundation going forward for current games.
I've got the PS5 Digital Edition, and my friends abuse me about it every day, but it was perfect for me. The only things I miss are owning beautiful steelbooks and giving games to my friends that I have finished and think they'll enjoy
@@Battleneter at least on pc we have a lot more choices where we buy our digital games from, drm free versions of many games if we want it and good refund policies.
When Xbox said the XB1 was going to have digital licenses, at first I was mad, but then I realized that it was really more or less the same as PC games and I've had those digitally for like 17 years now with no issues. I still bought discs, but with this latest generation where it's clear that the discs are little more than installation media and license keys, I figured it was finally time to go all digital. I still got the models with disc drives for backward compatibility, but all new games have been bought digitally. The only real downside has been price; physical games tend to get better sales, which is a little dumb. I think the biggest issue moving forward isn't having digital games or even that some games might no longer be available for sale, it's that there isn't a consistent store front for them. With Steam, games I bought 17 years ago are still there; with PlayStation or Nintendo, each console generation has its own store, so they shut down the previous ones after a while, so you not only lose the ability to purchase those games, you can't even go download them again. But that does seem to be changing as the PS4 and PS5 stores seem to be the same and the Xbox marketplace hasn't really changed since the 360 era (I mean look at the product pages for 360 games online, they literally haven't changed), so maybe they are learning.
Also think about it this way now. Those games and their data are actually connected to your account so they should be able to be redownloaded with no issues on the newest console.
Very cool video Kurt! I love digital libraries but I too have found myself collecting books, vinyl and other physical media that bring me good memories of the past.
I use to own a lot of books, boxes of comics, and a ton of movie cases. But now that I’ve let go of a lot it, I’m not opposed to owning stuff again, I’ve just become much more deliberate and mindful about it, which is why I think I love records, and old games. It demands my attention to engage with it. Anyway, really appreciate you watching and sharing your thoughts!
Really well done video. Starting doing the same with retro during the lockdowns. Personally, I'll always pick physical over digital purely for the resell option
Thanks, Dan. I think there's ton of value in buying physical for that very purpose of reselling -- totally get it. It's just something I haven't done in ages, and just naturally stopped somehow. But yeah, it appears a few of us started collecting older games over the past year, and I just find that fascinating.
To clarify, the game stays minimised so you can pick up where you left off. It'll load in just like a quick resume game rather than reloading the whole thing. Less convenient than digital quick resume, more convenient than loading from scratch
@@Marchelo1988 I don’t know what you’re doing to make it take so long but it is definitely quicker to just switch a disc and resume (and that’s with the assumption the game being switched from is also on disc) then to start the game normally. Either way the guy in the video is incorrect to say the feature doesn’t work on physical games because regardless of how whether it’s “quick” enough for you, it does work.
I prefer to have choice. Sure I get some people prefer digital. For me it is all about choice. I still play on my PS4, I do not own PS5 (availability issues or if available the price) but I got XSX, 10 months ago at MSRP. Yes Xbox Game Pass (including recent updates to xCloud) is my main way o playing games, but I bought Judgment and Lost Judgment physical editions. Game Pass allows me to try a lot of games I might have otherwise missed, and number of them were good or very good experiences. So at it right now we all have a choice. And this is great. The only sad thing is that the consoles availability is poor (to put it mildly). For me personally the old base PS4 is still a good piece of hardware - sure it is significantly louder than XSX, sure the loading times sometimes feels like a waste of time, but I can still play games on it and enjoy them. I get that for some people after trying new hardware is it really hard to go back to the previous one, but this is not the case for me. The only thing that counts is to enjoy gaming. It does not matter what hardware we play, it's all about the fun we have. Have a nice time gaming!
This guy makes entertaining videos. Kudos to Kurt for making another great one 👏 Also, I am having a blast with my Series S alongside the best thing ever happened in entertainment A.K.A the Game Pass 💚
it's simple, you paid 60euro for Vahalla and Phoenix Rising in the last sale, I paid 16euro each or 32 total. I can also sell them. physical > digital.
SImple answer is..Xbox is tailor made for streaming games, thus getting a Series S for new xbox gamers is a no brainer..but PS just isnt, so having discs is the way to go on PS5.
I’ve never borrowed a new game or traded an old one in my life. The worst thing about consoles is the paltry amount of HD space. Had to buy an 8TB western digital black just to store games. That’s more important that’s the physical copy. Also, why is the digital copy the same price as the physical version? What a rip.
Wonder if some day we'll look back on physical games with such nostalgia, that like records, they'll come back as a novelty version or more high end way to get them once more.
I want to predict so. The thing that I have a hard time wrapping my head around is how it'll work with this current gen (even last gen), however. Records are an analog medium, like film, even VHS), but games have always been a digital medium. I feel like the novelty will mostly stem from physical collectibles, like cases, statues, etc. It's a weird thing to think about, honestly.
The thing with physical media of the past is that a LOT of them, especially the ps1 and dreamcast games are so pricey that they are away from the reach of the normal person so in this I kinda love digital more, due to which I can buy any games that I want without paying the top dollars to the dust collectors who own them. Case and point, look at xbox. Games such as otogi, gunvalkyrie, most of the jrpgs of the 360, asuras wrath, are all available digitally for lower than half of what they go for. And for that I would love it. And won't mind if physical media goes away.
Really nice video! Early this year, I wanted to play Battlefield Bad Company (1) again. My PS3 was at my sister's place so she could use to watch movies, I was too lazy to get it. Looked online and saw BFBC is part of Game Pass, so I bought a Xbox Series S for 180 euros. Used one that is, but in very good condition, only missing the original box and info book that comes with it originally. And oh man, I was pleasantly surprised by the power of the Xbox. I've bought the PS5 last year, but I'm not really blown away at all, only really bought it to play R&C Rift Apart. But in the last few months, I've played a lot more on the Series S than on the PS5.
Great video, i did the same as Kurt digital PS5 & XBox SS. The way i balance is i buy a game on psn of its on sale then beat it play series s game pass till the games i want go on sale. I was soo close to pulling the trigger for Miles Morales ultimate edition. Oh and soon as my friend gets a ps5 we will game share so even better
I'm sorry you've missed me! There's a Skyrim video that went up last week I did (it's in the end card for this video actually), and I did another on Wii Sports a few weeks back too. I'm around, I promise. But again, sorry those videos haven't popped up for ya.
As soon as people get rid of that "Need and Greed" for physical and go with and embrace the digital, better for them!....Plus have you ever thought of saving games on an external then selling that for some resell value?.
I picked up a digital PS5 this summer. I easily prefer digital games because I *never* sell my games and I hate switching discs. However, I will say that I miss being able to play DVDs on my PlayStation and I might trade towards a disc edition for that reason.
Yeah, I really haven't missed it at all with the exception of maybe possible borrowing a game from someone. But even then, so far for the PS5 that's been very very rare.
I just finally switched form being an avid Steelbook collector to going all digital. It was the need to have the best quality for my movies and being faced with replacing most of my collection with new 4K disks or just using my digital copies like I already had been. Once it became clear it would cost way too much to upgrade what would probably need to be upgraded later. I was REALLY resistant to switching away from my physical collection that I’d been building for almost 13 years. Now I feel like I’m living in the future. Less clutter, I manage all my games from my phone and download my games from anywhere so they are ready when I get home. There are crazy deals on PSN and I just add whatever I want to my wishlist and get alerts when they are cheap so I pay way less per game. I’m sure it has its downsides but so far it’s been great and this coming from someone who was essentially physical only up until about a month ago.
i have the series S, my first x box ever and the PS5 with a disc....my PS5 has collected dust outside of far cry 6 with all the games on game pass...i love that little machine
This is basically my same situation. Aside from Demon's Souls, and Resident Evil Village, I just basically don't turn mine on. BUT... that admittedly could change in a year or two -- who knows.
Really well done video. I ended up getting a Series S because I couldn't find a Series X anywhere. At first I regretted it but videos like this have me optimistic. I'm upgrading from One S so very excited!
First, thanks for the kind words - really happy you enjoyed the video. Second, I was also kind of concerned I’d regret it to, but a year later, and I’m still amazed by this little beast. Also… with cloud gaming… depending where that goes in the next couple years, hardware power may not matter that much after all
If your cat demands your attention, you shall do so as commanded, Kurt. Bow to our feline overlords!! But, seriously! Cats are the best! On a more serious note, the one thing that worries me about all digital gaming is if one day I will no longer be able to red-ownload the stuff I purchased. That's my only real fear.
I love this video! It's honest about the pros and cons of an all-digital future, and how the cons affect the way Kurt plays games. I'd love to see more videos like this.
Kurt's content is the best content! He doesn't feel like so many other producers out there with a journalistic feel to them -not that there's anything wrong with it-, instead, he feels closer to our level, the average games enjoyer lever.
This was so well made, and explained. It really gives you a proper perspective from a practicality PoV of using a digital only console day-to-day. Thanks GameSpot for this brilliantly produced video.
Didn't realize I was watching a gamespot video. This was very well put together and didn't feel allll...... Like... The new IGN Machinima Watcmojo etc. bs videos. Very nice
I have been exclusively digital for 10 years now. I love being able to just go into a game without having to switch a disc and putting them back in their boxes. I never buy full priced games and the digital sales are great.
I'm the other way around. I love switching discs and having to put them back in their own boxes. I usually collected both physical and digital over the years and have been mainly physical the last two years. But there are some games like attack on titan final battle that make me want to buy the digital version. I'd rather spend $30 on a digital copy over $150-$200 on a physical.
Have you ever thought about how many games come out every year? How many of those games have physical copies? How many of those games have sold 100000 copies? 1 million copies. And the first 2 things these games have you do is install to the internal drive and download a 30gb patch to make the game playable. A game that comes on a disc in a plastic box is as close to a single use plastic as it can get. It's basically the equivalent of a straw. More so than music or movies. How many games come feature complete on a disc? No Online, Multiplayer, DLC, Day One Patch or Year 3 Patch? If you popped that PS5 game disc into a PS5 20 years from now. Would that game be 100% playable without trying to download content from a server that doesn't exist anymore? So what is the point of this physical media other than to pacify peoples need to physically own things.
Did you watch the whole video? Gaming history preservation and all that? Pacifying people's need to own physical things is definitely NOT the only reason
The biggest reason I stayed physical: sales. I buy digital when I can, but so many games go on sale physically and not digitally, it’s hard to pass up. I just bought Riders Republic for $25 - it’s on sale for $40 digitally. I bought Hotwheels Unleashed for $30 - still $50 digitally.
Jay! Hey, I do have my own channel, but it's become a bit dormant since I've started at GameSpot... so I apologize for that. But, I do have a playlist of my GameSpot work that I'm always updating. Maybe ONE day I'll crawl back into my own channel... one day. Thanks for watching and commenting, Jay!
I love my series s it's a great console but I'm really itching to get a 4k console, I have a 4ktv so a 4k console makes sense, I'll eventually get a series x or ps5 for now I'm really impressed with the series s.
I'm an avid Dreamcast, GameCube, PS1 collector but I went all digital with an Xbox One S and haven't had any regrets. The odd downside of digital hasn't kicked me anywhere close to scalpers and degrading discs has for physical.
Great video! I picked up a Series S about a month ago through XBox All Access (which includes two years of Game Pass), and I love it. It's a tiny beast of a machine. I own zero 4K screens, and I've been getting sick of physical media piling up all over my house. The way I see it, the Series S has everything I want and nothing I don't...for $200 cheaper. Win-win-win.
I want to get a disc-PS5 but I've also been thinking about getting a used XBONE just for Game Pass I've also recently bought a PS3 and have been hunting down all the games I missed on that and having a blast

Physical for life. I’m a collector so need my games as physical copies. Being able to lend my games , borrow , resell is a must. Relying on one digital store means you’re the mercy of their prices and usually physicals are cheaper even without being pre owned.
Digital prices for black friday were legit 2x more expensive than the disc versions 😳
@@wrestlingtalks1019 the fact they still sell games that have been released for years for full price os enough for me to never go digital.

I personally cannot afford physical copies, so gamepass is a great way for me, a student, to be able to game!
Many choices versus 1 source for price. I have disc PS5 and already saved the difference in price to digital in 8 months.
I’ve got the disc PS5 and the series S. It’s a perfect combo for me.
Series X and digital PS5 for me! It's a great combo agreed
Ps5 digital and Ps5 Physical for me as, its perfect for spending extra money for no good reason
PS5, switch & PC for me, best combo. still waiting for steam deck

let me not start about mods. some games just become completely different from og after mods
Can’t get my hands on a series s because scalpers are taking them too fast. Before I can even get my money onto a card.
Here in the UK physical games are cheaper to buy than digital
Interesting. It's definitely the opposite here.
With the uses game market, physical is the way to go if you can stand to wait.
I live in South Africa and we have access to all the major title’s physical copies, but it is cheaper to purchase the games digitally.
I'm Brazilian as well and I agree with you. Actually I've gone all digital since the Xbox 360. Last gen I got a PS4 and I own only three physical games. Now I have a Series S, so I won't buy any physical games for obvious reasons.
The series s is seriously an underrated device.
True
It’s A Rip Off
Tbh i think it’s overrated.

Well it’s $100-$200 cheaper so maybe that’s why
@@B36-x2v You’ll save more money buying games pre owned and selling/trading them in the long run
You save money by spending? 🤣
Buying preowned games saves you money for sure. But you dont support the devs and publishers in the process. Just saying.
Physical forever man. Digital is for some lazy people that are willing to wait longer for sales as physical games go on sale more often.
I never leave comments on videos, but I do feel like this was excellent games journalism, so just wanted to leave that sentiment here. It’s so heartening to listen to a conversation about gaming that doesn’t have to do with a company doing something wrong or a review but actually about the thing itself. Bravo!
Kurt's videos are always well written with super clean aesthetics and editing, and this one is no exception!
Great work!

Honestly this is the same thing I’m going through. I find myself turning on my series S a lot more than my PS5

If Kurt makes more videos, I would sub right away. Great format and a very good comparison and review of the things that matter (At least to me)!
Yeah hopefully next gen still has the option to work with physical media.
We’ve been doing it on PC for the past 20 years. Works great
This generation, it's worth spending that little extra for the physical editions.

I just discovered that i could rent PS4 games at my local library, and i found this quite neat!

@@KurtIndovina KURT :D xD
Specially all the videos made by Kurt...
Kurt's videos always have geat direction, editing and just incredible quality
I’m a physical disk person. Being able to resell, borrow, feel, display and glance on the artwork of the games are amazing. Although it can be messy sometimes when not on a shelf, it does make it more unique in some way. Not only that, you can also get physical games way more cheaper than digital games. While, if you buy digital games, you can lend to a friend, can’t display them, can’t resell them ect. Also, I’m pretty sure, if you lose your psn/Xbox acount, then you’ll lose all your games. So that’s why I like buying physical games instead.

So next time we need to buy more, it will be Black Friday sales time again
Digital is more expensive and you don't have the options you do with physical like selling the game or lending the game to friends. When you hear the media saying digital has become more popular that's just a narrative they use so they can make more money and make you feel like you are behind in the world.
Physical will always remain the best option
agreed, its why i love my ps5, ps4 games are so cheap on disc and i sell once i beat them.
I'm also a music collector and I totally get your point in the end of the video :)
First off, thanks for watching that far -- that means a lot. Glad you get where I'm coming from.
LOVE the editing of this video
I was thinking about this a lot actually, thanks for covering this
I wish I had gone digital the last couple of generations.

Hey, and thank YOU! And welcome to the new year!

Excellent review, thank you !!!

Thanks, Dan. I think there's ton of value in buying physical for that very purpose of reselling -- totally get it. It's just something I haven't done in ages, and just naturally stopped somehow. But yeah, it appears a few of us started collecting older games over the past year, and I just find that fascinating.
Massively underrated video, guess I'll stick around in this channel to see more this kind of contents in the future. Cheers.
Quick resume does work with physical games, albeit with the need to get up and swap a disc.
…which is not that quick to do
To clarify, the game stays minimised so you can pick up where you left off.

This video was so well done
This guy makes entertaining videos. Kudos to Kurt for making another great one 👏 Also, I am having a blast with my Series S alongside the best thing ever happened in entertainment A.K.A the Game Pass 💚
Great content GameSpot, I really enjoyed this. I also enjoyed the cat she was great.
it's simple, you paid 60euro for Vahalla and Phoenix Rising in the last sale, I paid 16euro each or 32 total. I can also sell them. physical > digital.
Dude. Kudos for the Sneak King highlight.
Legit one of two 360 games I own physically.
Well done video!

Same here I don't care about Disc games but I use my PS5 as a Blu-ray Player.
Great job! You made a 14 minute video feel like 2 minutes
I still want discs its the best feeling seeing a dope gaming collection. When the internet dies I can still play single player games... wbu?
i have the series S, my first x box ever and the PS5 with a disc....my PS5 has collected dust outside of far cry 6 with all the games on game pass...i love that little machine
This is basically my same situation. Aside from Demon's Souls, and Resident Evil Village, I just basically don't turn mine on. BUT... that admittedly could change in a year or two -- who knows.
That was a great video. Well edited and produced. Fantastic work.
Andrew, that means a lot! Thanks for giving it a watch.
Also… with cloud gaming… depending where that goes in the next couple years, hardware power may not matter that much after all
Great Video and you really hit the nail on the head. NB I recently got back into CRTs and before you know it have a collection lol
That's awesome, Austin! I really appreciate you giving a watch and leaving a comment!
This guy is really easy to watch...... I like it
That means a lot! Thanks for that. Glad it easy to watch.
Kurt's content is the best content! He doesn't feel like so many other producers out there with a journalistic feel to them -not that there's anything wrong with it-, instead, he feels closer to our level, the average games enjoyer lever.
That's just incredible. Thank you so much for this. Thanks for watching, and really appreciate you taking the time to comment.

Series S for travel is just perfect
@2:17 strange quick resume seems to work with physical games though
This was so well made, and explained. It really gives you a proper perspective from a practicality PoV of using a digital only console day-to-day.
Thanks GameSpot for this brilliantly produced video.
Ah thank you, Ginmit. Means a lot. I personally went back and forth on making this one so that's really validating
Kurt thumbnail is a fast click for me!
Love your videos!
That means a lot to me, Giuseppe! So glad to have you back.
@@KurtIndovina Always top notch quality content! 👏👏👏
Can we have more videos like this! This was a nice refreshing take. And Kurt has made a phenomenal job at it.
100%
I'm the other way around. I love switching discs and having to put them back in their own boxes. I usually collected both physical and digital over the years and have been mainly physical the last two years. But there are some games like attack on titan final battle that make me want to buy the digital version. I'd rather spend $30 on a digital copy over $150-$200 on a physical.
I've saved so much money staying physical. digital sales need to get much better.
100% agree on the physical games and playing them from previous gen’s on intended hardware and discs. It has a therapeutic quality.
We're on the same wave length!
Agreed but you can still resell it witch a lot of people still do .
Did you watch the whole video? Gaming history preservation and all that? Pacifying people's need to own physical things is definitely NOT the only reason
That's not a "physical media" issue, that's entirely a "publishers purposely crippling physical media for their convenience" issue.
What are you preserving if the disc doesn't have the full game? And who is preserving Warzone, Halo infinite and other online only games?
@@batmangovno why do you need it to be physical?
The biggest reason I stayed physical: sales. I buy digital when I can, but so many games go on sale physically and not digitally, it’s hard to pass up. I just bought Riders Republic for $25 - it’s on sale for $40 digitally. I bought Hotwheels Unleashed for $30 - still $50 digitally.
It's odd that that's the norm. Digital games should be cheaper, but that's rarely the case.
I got a disc PS5 and series S. Literally the best possible option
Admittedly, I'm ever so slightly, just a little, envious.
This is hands down the first good gamespot video I've seen in awhile, does this chap have his own channel?
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the Series S support 4K output?
I'm an avid Dreamcast, GameCube, PS1 collector but I went all digital with an Xbox One S and haven't had any regrets. The odd downside of digital hasn't kicked me anywhere close to scalpers and degrading discs has for physical.
Man physical forever
Great video! I picked up a Series S about a month ago through XBox All Access (which includes two years of Game Pass), and I love it. It's a tiny beast of a machine. I own zero 4K screens, and I've been getting sick of physical media piling up all over my house. The way I see it, the Series S has everything I want and nothing I don't...for $200 cheaper. Win-win-win.
I want to get a disc-PS5 but I've also been thinking about getting a used XBONE just for Game Pass
I've also recently bought a PS3 and have been hunting down all the games I missed on that and having a blast
Didn't realize this was gamespot! This is excellent content.
Hey, appreciate that, Sean! Thank you
